[edit] RE:User:Steve46814/Korea Gallery creation

Thank you for your consideration.

As you may have detected, no one has stepped up to offer me any assistance in learning to navigate the intricacies of the Wikimedia Commons. I may have found a book that will help me learn how to contribute to the Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons without making a mess of things. I don't have that book yet but I have hopes it will help me a lot.

This "Korea Gallery" looks like it should be so much easier to use. Would you consider explaining how to created gallery pages like this so I may add additional gallery pages for use with non-Korean content as well?

Thank you again for your assistance, patience and time.

(p.s. I would also appreciate knowing if this is the appropriate way to correspond with you)

Your guidance in creating gallery pages was great. I have accomplished that task and populated the new gallery with some photos. I have also figured out how to create sub categories with a little trial and error (OK, mistakes). Hopefully I have not created a mess that you or someone else will need to clean up as with my passed endeavors.

Thank you again for your help, patience and interest in assisting me.

[edit] Re: Pansori images

Thank you for your kind remarks about the Pansori images. These pictures were taken inside an auditorium with theatrical lighting, which helped. As you know, with the exception of the snap of the fan, there is little rapid movement in a Pansori performance. I was able to hold the camera steady enough, with the help of the "steady shot" feature of the camera, to get a couple of good shots. You'll notice the fan is closed in both pictures. The composition of the pictures would have been better with the fan open, but the pictures I took when the fan was open turned out to be too blurry to be any good.

The Korean culture is so rich, diverse and fascinating that we try to experience as much of the traditional and contemporary cultures as we can while traveling in Korea. So little of the Korean culture is well known or understood outside Korea, especially in the West - and particularly in the US, that I think it is important to promote understanding of these two (traditional and contemporary) great cultures. This seems like a good venue to do accomplish some of this.

I have added another picture but am not able to categorize it. Would you please have a look, at your leisure, and add a category for me? Image:Korea-Black mussels 6680-07.JPG

Thank you, I appreciate all your patient help and assistance.

[edit] Problem with a photo

Dear Caspian Blue,

I have a problem. I have asked the person in charge with the copyrights of multiple Carlos Kleiber's picture to allow me the permission to add a CD cover from Deutsche Gramophon label. After reading the FGDL, she simply refuses (when she is nobody, compared to the daughter of german conductor Hermann Scherchen who gave me full permission). She wants the photo (i.e: a CD cover !!!) under a license that prevent it from being copied or whatever... As for me, I give my biography to anybody who would find some information in it. I don't think that I am God. Apparently she thinks that her father WAS God. Do you have any solution for me ??? Thanks! User Talk: MenerbesMenerbes (talk) 18:08, 24 September 2008 (UTC)20:08

[edit] Carlos Kleiber again

Hey Caspian Blue: you wrote:

 • Hi, Menerbes. Good to see you again. I'm afraid I don' know hot to solve the problem because I've never done to ask a permission from famous people's family. He WAS god to me....too, so I understand his daughter's opinion. Is the photo that you want to get a permission from her for a purpose to use in Wikipedia or others? If your request is lied in the first case, we can use it as a fair use image since he was deceased. But as for the latter case, well, I don't know what solution might be. Sorry that I can't give you a helpful opinion. Best. --Caspian blue (talk) 21:29, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

 • Well, you misunderstood me. I am not talking about Kleiber's daughter, but about Siegried Lauterwasser's daughter. Lauterwasser was an official photographer for DG, and passed away in 2000. Alexandra is now in charge of the copyrights... And before readings the terms and conditions of the FGDL license, she only agreed for a CD cover where DG could be perhaps better seen than Kleiber himself. This is mean.... You know, Kleiber was also God for me, and I would respect his children viewpoints; but that is not the case. About celebrity families who don't want to give a photo, well, I had a very nice time with Hermann Scherchen's dautghter Myriam, who allowed me almost everything, because she was happy to see her father recognized.. I will find a way, you will see!!!

Thanks a lot. Good WE. User Talk: MenerbesMenerbes (talk) 18:57, 26 September 2008 (UTC)20:55

 • Pictogram voting comment.svg Comment There are so many categories on WikiCommons, that I lose track. Anyway, keep up the good work on renaming the images. Yes, I was the person who persuaded the flickr owner to license some of his images as 'cc by sa' as this shows. I did not know he would license his whole set of Gyeongju photos free...but he obviously didn't mind doing this. (I just mentioned only 3 photos...which I had not had deleted which is why I later had to file an undeletion request here) Personally, I think his images are unbelievable...taken at maximum resolution. Its a pity most people's images are of inferior quality. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 07:28, 16 July 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. As the guess, you contacted the photographer. I've been searching good images regarding Korea on Flickr, and many of his images are marked as "my favorites" because of the good quality. However, I delayed to contact him directly, but you did. I really appreciate your effort for Commons, so we have the quality images from the photographer. Thank you for the message, and kind words. Best regards--Caspian blue 17:37, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

The mask of Amenemope is my only valued quality image from a good friend at flickr. Most times the people I ask are willing to change the license...provided they are named in the image title itself. Regards from Metro Vancouver Canada, --Leoboudv (talk) 20:27, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Re:Pictures and Galleries

Thank you for you generous comments on my pictures and the time you spent on creating galleries. I have many pictures taken on our trips to Korea but find the picture uploading procedure slow and cumbersome so it takes me a long time to accomplish anything. Still working on adding more for Guinsa. If you know of a way to more easily upload pictures, other than using the "Upload file" link provided on the left side of the Commons screen, please advise. Thanks again for your help and interest.Steve46814 (talk) 23:38, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Thank you very much for the Barnstar. That was an unexpected and pleasant surprise. Your recommending the "Commonist" bulk photo uploader is also greatly appreciated. This should be a great tool with a few more refinements but it works fairly well now the way it is, and does save time once one figures out all the quirks. Thanks again for for your consideration.Steve46814 (talk) 03:41, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit] "[year] in [country]" categories

In principle, I agree with you 100%. It should be (for example) Category:Germany in 1964, rather than Category:1964 in Germany. Besides sounding more natural, the former is consistent with the "[country] in the [decade]" category tree. I also note that the "[country] in [year]" form is more inclusive (for example, something like this, which is so extremely relevant and iconic to the American experience in 1945, could be included in Category:United States in 1945 or a subcategory thereof, but arguably would be excluded from Category:1945 in the United States because it didn't occur in the U.S.).

However, the problem is that the current standard is "[year] in [country]" - the vast majority of the year/country categories (it appears only the South Korean categories are the exception) follow that format. I don't agree with it, but that's the standard. It needs to be changed across the board, so that all "[year] in [country]" categories are switched to "[country] in [year]", rather than having the occasional "[country] in [year]" cat. I personally do not have the energy at this time to make a recommendation at COM:CFD that we make this switch (my previous suggestion at COM:CFD seems to be ignored), but I would wholeheartedly support any proposal that you or someone else would make to do the switchover. I know that User:Foroa is also troubled by the "[year] in [country]" form, and would presumably support a proposal to change them all to "[country] in [year]".

In the meantime and until there is consensus at COM:CFD to do otherwise, however, the South Korean year cats need to be consistent with the rest of the "[year] in [country]" category tree, and that means (for example) Category:1964 in South Korea. If someone is prepared to raise the issue at CFD, I will hold off making the switchover of any South Korean year cats, but otherwise we need to be consistent within this one category tree. --skeezix1000 (talk) 17:31, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

The U.S. decade categories are in the "[country] in the [decade]" form (as is the case for all countries, as far as I know), but all of the U.S. year categories are in the "[year] in [country]" form. I don't know why the decade category tree follows a different form that the year category tree, but that's (sadly) the way it is. Consistency-wise, it makes more sense that the South Korean year categories follow the format of the year category tree, rather than looking to the decade category tree, and the year category tree is overwhelmingly in the "[year] in [country]" format. I think the only solution is to propose a widespread change through COM:CFD. --skeezix1000 (talk) 14:40, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
That's a good idea. If you make a proposal, let me know, and I will support it. If there is consensus for the change, someone will arrange for a bot to make the change. --skeezix1000 (talk) 17:38, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Hello Caspian blue!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Commons images are used by editors on many projects in many languages. Each image is put into categories. This helps other editors find them. Please add categories to each image you upload.

To add an image to a category, add the following code to the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbit of comets, add the following to the image description page:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories: Astronomy diagrams, Comets.

For further information on categories read Commons:Categories.

The CommonSense Tool often helps you find the best category for your image.

Here is a gallery of your images. Please check that each image has a category. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the help desk. Thank you.

[edit] Problems on Meta

I've not seen that behaviour before but it's likely a configuration or setting at your end. Try it with a different browser, perhaps. This happens on Meta but not anywhere else? The index.php is how everything gets done for example the link I'm using right now to edit this section is:

http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Caspian_blue&action=edit&section=new

... ++Lar: t/c 20:27, 30 August 2009 (UTC)

Yep, it only happens on Meta. I've sometimes run into that problems over the years since I registered my account on WikiProjects. That is why I stopped to care about editing on Meta because there are many Wikiproject I can contribute to, but well, that problem would not be ceased unless I would voice out. The link on "Commons" is working, but I'm not sure I can edit on Meta with the same method.--Caspian blue 22:39, 30 August 2009 (UTC)
I just tested the method, which worked, but I could not still edit or click the top tab, and can not bring the diff here because of the annoying pop-up.--Caspian blue 22:43, 30 August 2009 (UTC)
I changed the title to link the page on Meta.--Caspian blue 22:50, 30 August 2009 (UTC)

There was something I would like to say, please feel free to keep placing those kind of list on my talk page, you do very very good work and our duplicate category is very very backlogged so when you make a list like that you make it nice and easy for us administrators to handle it.

Really, I hope you make a lot of those list in the future and I will be happy to handle it for you, but did you ever think about running for administrator here on Commons?

Best regards, Huib talk 09:47, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for the kind words and visit here. I'm glad you agree with my assessment on such lists. I'm planning to make a list of images for renaming soon. Done. When I uploaded a bunch of images named "Jinseonmun", I forgot this request.--Caspian blue 22:02, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
Thanks, but by the way: renaming all files you want to "Korea-..." will not work. Thanks for paying attention to this important field of quality, but please dont ask for renames not covered by Commons:File renaming. --Martin H. (talk) 23:38, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
Well, I respectfully disagree. The questioned file clearly falls under the guideline because "interesting perspective" is a subjective expression and has no information about what gate would be, so I thought renaming with an accurate title like "Korea-Seoul-Changdeokgung-Jinnamun" (location info) is better for searching. I also expected "Betacommandbox" would rename it, so your visit for the matter puzzled me a bit.--Caspian blue 23:47, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
Moreover, I mostly request for renaming "incorrectly Romanizied titles", not just for adding the Korea- prefix".--Caspian blue 23:59, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
Your help is highly appreciated and your edits improve the quality in a significant way, see the renaming of "An interesting perspective...". But e.g. with File:Choksuk Pavillion-JinjuCastle.jpg I not see the reason for rename. After the file move function is activated the moves will be done manually (for the moment), that saves the reuplod by Betacommand, it will keep the uploads by the uploader and it will save administrators time to delete the files. --Martin H. (talk) 00:07, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
The second name is not only misspelled (not Pavillion) but also "incorrectly Romanizied" (there are a couple of Romanizations of Korean, but it should be at any of 진주-진주성-촉석루-01.jpg (in Korean), "Chinju Castle-Cho'ngsok Pavilion", "Jinju-Choksengnu", "Jinju-Chokseok Castle" ect). So there is no way to find the file with the current false name if somebody would search for images related to the subject. I appreciate your hard working, but my rename requests are solid and based on the valid ground (descriptive names, and fix incorrect Romanization), so if you do not like my renaming, please defer it to other admins. Thanks.--00:13, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
Ok, thank you. Please feel free to put the rename back on that image (and others from the category), but please fill in a short explanation with newname.ext --Martin H. (talk) 01:19, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

[edit] Images from Mireille Ampilhac's Flickr account

Okay, I'm right curious here. You uploaded File:Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart at the 2009 Deauville American Film Festival-01.jpg and tagged it as CC-SA-A. When I pull up the source image, I see it also has the NC tag present, which should disqualify it from Commons upload. Same thing goes for File:Director and actors of I'm not there at the 64th Venice Film Festival-01.jpg and others. So what gives here? Tabercil (talk) 16:46, 14 October 2009 (UTC)

I uploaded them via Flickrhelper, not by hand, so you can check the fact in looking into the Flickr bot's contribution history. I think the photographer changed the copyright setting "right after" I sent her an email for showing my gratitude to her releasing images under CC-BY-SA today. :-(. I think the photographer tries to revoke the images, but at that time I was uploading her images of actors, those were under CC-BY-SA. I have not received any reply from her yet, but I can send a copy of my email message with the time log to COM:OTRS. Moreover, according to Commons policy and Creative Commons policies, the images are not revoked, so I don't think those should be deleted.--Caspian blue 16:50, 14 October 2009 (UTC)
Okay, I know what you're talking about. I got one Flickr account who wanted to change the license back after I uploaded File:Keisha Castle-Hughes at TIFF 2009.jpg. They haven't yet gotten around to reverting back, but I reckon it's only a matter of time. Kicking the email along to OTRS might not be a bad idea, just to forestall the next user who asks the same question. Tabercil (talk) 16:59, 14 October 2009 (UTC)
Well, placing Flickr-change-of-license to the images would be good for other curious viewers? I can forward my email message to her to OTRS, but if she does not reply to me, I don't think those images could have the securing "orange OTRS permission" templates.--Caspian blue 17:06, 14 October 2009 (UTC)
Template ought to be good enough I think. Tabercil (talk) 17:15, 14 October 2009 (UTC)
I sent another email to explain about non-revocable CC-BY-SA and tagged all images with the template. I hope she replies to me..--Caspian blue 17:22, 14 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Re:National Museum Incense Burner Photo

Nominating image File:Korea - Seoul - National Museum - Incense Burner 0252-06a.jpg to WP:FPC had crossed my mind but felt that it was 1) not of enough general interest to generate the support needed for Feature Picture promotion, and 2) not of a high enough resolution to garner needed support. However since you have proposed nominating this picture I think I will give it a try. What is the worst that can happen - it gets rejected?;) Thank you for your support, I sincerely appreciate it. Steve46814 (talk) 23:37, 14 October 2009 (UTC)

HELP! Attempted to submit this nomination following the less than clear instruction and have generally screwed it up. Rather than trying to fix things and make it worse I'm asking for you to please bail me out and fix (or delete) this if you would. Here is what I did Wikipedia:Featured_picture_candidates/ and I know it is not right. Thank you for anything you can do. So Sorry, I should have known better than to attempt this. Steve46814 (talk) 01:30, 15 October 2009 (UTC)
Hi, all you gotta do right now is just to add at the top of http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Featured_picture_candidates&action=edit&section=1 Cheers.--Caspian blue 01:50, 15 October 2009 (UTC)
Thanks again. I wish I understood this barnstar stuff and how to do it because I certainly would like to issue one to you for putting up with me and my screw ups, fixing things, and then being so pleasant about it all. Sorry to be such a PIA. Think I'll ever be able to get on board with all this stuff and make myself usefull?? Thank you very much with apologies for creating extra things for you to do. Steve46814 (talk) 05:44, 15 October 2009 (UTC)
Sorry for my inappropriate changing of the Incense Burner image version. My thoughts were as the edit/version submitted by another editor contributing in the Feature Picture promotion discussion did seem to improve on my original photo, I thought it desirable to substitute this improved version. I was unaware that would be in conflict with the Quality Image promotion criteria/guidelines etc. Perhaps you could suggest to someone in the inner circle that a check be performed and block such inappropriate updates when a user attempts to update a Quality Image, or the like, when this activity is invalid. Thank you again for all your help and support in this endevor, you are the greatest. Steve46814 (talk) 18:37, 23 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Tip

This flickr owner here licenses his images freely and takes high resolution photos but since he gives minimal or no image descriptions, only 7 of his photos are on Commons. I think the pictures he's taking recently is in Korea (though he has been in Europe before) since he says in his profile that he's in Inchon right now. If there is any important image you recognise, feel free to upload it here. Its worth it considering the superhigh image resolution. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 05:29, 11 November 2009 (UTC)

Hi, Leoboudv. The flick site page indeed has useful Korean images, so I will upload some of them. Thank you for the tip.--Caspian blue 15:21, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
