Linking Photos

In the beginning you only had one category, the species category. Now you have the species category and the Family category. The Family is linked properly to Birds of India and the next higher category, but the species category is still a blank linked category. Someone actually deleted it because it was empty (red link) You must connect it to the Family Category. I just did the new uploads so take a look at what I mean. Oh, I am publishing a series of Postcards and would like to use some of your photos sometime i the future, I will credit you as the photographer and Wiki Commons and the appropriate License. If you like, I can send you some samples, e-mail me privately. WayneRay 13:04, 26 October 2007 (UTC)WayneRay

Kolkata

) indiantreepix there is a message from Calcutta gentleman who has a camera for sale, I am interested but it says to phone him in the city? Are you near there and I also need to know the same price in Canadian/US dollars, I don't know the Rupi? Thanks WayneRay 12:47, 31 October 2007 (UTC)WayneRay

He is around 1500 Km. away from me as he is in Delhi. You convert it into Us Dollars by dividing by 40 as one US Dollar is around 40 Rupees.J.M.Garg 08:36, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
Thanks, He is on his way to USA on a business trip for November so he will contact me and send it from there, all the best. WayneRay 13:51, 2 November 2007 (UTC)WayneRay

Image:Chir Pine at Bhandakthathaatch (8000 ft) I IMG 7363.jpg

Hi JMG - your photo Image:Chir Pine at Bhandakthathaatch (8000 ft) I IMG 7363.jpg is Pinus wallichiana, not P. roxburghii. I'd suggest re-uploading it Image:Pinus wallichiana at Bhandakthathaatch (2400 m) I IMG 7363.jpg (or similar); after renaming, I can delete the wrongly- named file - MPF 16:17, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. I have re-uploaded the image as Image:Blue Pine (Pinus wallichiana) at Bhandakthathaatch (8000 ft) I IMG 7363.jpg. Pl. delete the earlier one. J.M.Garg 12:13, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

category and sub-category

As far as I am aware, there is no need to put photos in both a category and a sub-category. I think that just the sub-category will suffice. So for birds, this means that the photos are put in the species category, and not in the genus category, and not in both categories. The species category is made a sub-category of the genus category. However; sometimes on the commons, when there are only a few photographs in a genus category, the category structure may be incomplete without a lower level of species categories. When there are several photographs the category structure tend to be more complete with a genus category and species sub-categories. In many cases you might need to make new species categories as sub-categories of the genus category for your images. Snowmanradio 14:10, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

Why not put the species category in both the genus category and the Birds of India category OR if you put the genera cat in the Birds of India cat the species subcategories will become available in the Birds of India cat as subcats without needing to link each image to the genus cat. I think that the duplication of putting the images in a cat and sub-cat is not needed and will potentially cause the genus cat to be too crowded, if all the other species are going to be added there too. The point of sub-cats is to ovoid over crowing and to be able to find what you are looking for. Actually, this is just how I have found the cats to work on the wiki, and I am not absolutely sure what the commons guidelines say. Your pictures are excellent, please continue to upload more and more, and we can sort out how to categorize them later. There should be a team here to help you with the work, a wonder if we get more volunteers. Have you got any more parrot photos? Snowmanradio 09:42, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
I have organised "Category:Psittacula" so that the species are in the "Bids of India" cat, the watermarks have been removed, and there is no duplication in cat and sub-cat. I am interested in parrots and would work on parrot pages, just so that they listed and can be easily viewed. Snowmanradio 17:50, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
Your photographs are highly appreciated. We are lucky to have such a treasure of photographs. Snowmanradio 15:00, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

Licience tag

I think that you accidentally forgot to put the license tag on image:Pioneer (Anaphaeis aurota) I IMG 0407.jpg. I hope that you can add one soon. Snowmanradio 23:18, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

Bad Link

First of all, thanks for the wonderful photos you uploaded. Great jobs!

Just a small message to warn you that you often did the same wikilanguage error:''[[(scientific name)]]'' instead of (''[[scientific name]]'') (here is a sample).
The display result is almost the same, but you always miss the link to the species article.

Thanks. Will follow in future.J.M.Garg

I have few pics here in my flickr account. would you take a look of them and help identify the species and comment thank you Dr.Vipin

Photo of myna

Hi J. M. Garg,

I am writing about your photograph of a juvenile myna nesting in a tree hollow. I would like to use it in a publication produced by a not-for-profit environmental organisation in Australia. The publication will be educational, non-commerical and given to the community for free.

I note that you have posted the image under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, so I’m emailing you as a courtesy, and to check that you are happy for us to reproduce your work. We will of course give you full credit for your photograph. Please let me know if you consent to your photograph being used. Many thanks, and best wishes for the new year, Melampusmedia1.

I do give my consent as above.J.M.Garg 07:13, 14 January 2008 (UTC)

Hill Pigeon

I'm looking for a picture to use of the Hill Pigeon (Columba rupestris) for the article of the same name at Wikipedia. deprecated function in your monobook.js

Dear user, I noticed that you use the includePage function in your monobook.js page.

This function is now obsolete, as the importScript function was introduced with rev:35064 to the MediaWiki Javascript core library wikibits.js. It also keeps track of already imported files.

To allow us to remove includePage from Mediawiki:Common.js I'd kindly ask you to replace its use with importScript (same syntax!). Thanks! --Dschwen 17:03, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Species Categories

Hello again my friend, Hope you liked the Barnstar award I gave you on your front page. I have been going through your images for a while and adjusting some of the links. In the beginning I thought I had explained the proper sequencing but I have noticed lately most of the categories link back on themselvs for example the images in Category:Turdoides affinis you had put in Category:Turdoides affinis, This only links back on itself and goes nowhere else, It should have been linked to Category:Turdoides and I have corrected several others. I can keep doing this if you are too busy, I don't mind it at all. Hope you are well and continued praise for your great photography. WayneRay (talk) 20:13, 12 August 2008 (UTC)WayneRay

Thanks, Wayne ji. I thought I am linking correctly as you told earlier. Is there no use of linking in Category:Turdoides affinis in the example as I saw it in Red instead of Blue at the end of the photgraph? This linking concept is difficult for me to understand? When we are putting category at the time of uploading, why it needs to be linked up again? Why can't it be linked automatically? J.M.Garg.

Hi, Wayne ji, can you tell me how to do it by giving an example. J.M.Garg (talk) 17:00, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

Talakona

Good to see that you visited the place. Do you have pictures of the rock and waterfall? Several years ago I had made a trip there and the first bird we saw was a Shama. Quite amazing to see that it looks so much like the Western Ghats - Yellow-browed bulbuls and so on. Any interesting birds ? Shyamal (talk) 03:12, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, I have pictures of the falls. But not any interesting bird as I was more focussed on Butterflies & flowers in about a day's trip. J.M.Garg

Lucionensis?

The image appears to match the description for "Philippine" Shrike lucionensis especially the grey crown.

Lanius cristatus lucionensis?

Self subcategorized categories

Hello. First, I only noticed this because I was looking at the uploads and saw some interesting uploads from you. Did you also know that when you are making a species category you are linking it to itself? An example of this which I am letting remain the way you made it is Category:Alysicarpus longifolius which is categorized in Category:Alysicarpus longifolius. It should be subcategorized as Category:Alysicarpus so it is a part of the taxonomy here and not just a circular link to itself.

I am assuming that it was not intentional and the same kind of mistake that I have made here myself. -- carol (talk) 16:03, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

Also, I have been making templates which should just add the appropriate categories and other things if you are interested in this:
{{Desmodieae species
|genus=Alysicarpus
|species=longifolius
|auth=(Rottler ex Spreng.) Wight & Arn.
}}
This template works for both galleries and categories, btw, with the exception of galleries for genus or species of a genus whose genus name is shared. -- carol (talk) 16:07, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, Carol ji. " An example of this which I am letting remain the way you made it is Category:Alysicarpus longifolius which is categorized in Category:Alysicarpus longifolius."- is my effort useless in this case. But how to subcategorize it under Category:Alysicarpus for all further uploads & rectify it for the previous once. Are these things really required as any picture can be simply searched in Wikimedia on any word?J.M.Garg (talk) 16:52, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

I tried your template above for editing Category:Alysicarpus longifolius, it seems to work. But the question is how to find out the 'Desmodieae' tribe you have mentioned. Can a template be made without mentioning any tribe like 'Desmodieae'?J.M.Garg (talk) 16:52, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

I tried to do it with other species- see http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Dolichandrone_falcata -is it OK. But I think finding the tribe is difficult. Can't it be done without knowing the tribe? J.M.Garg (talk) 17:21, 22 November 2008 (UTC). This is also working if I give family name 'Bignoniaceae' instead of tribe name 'Tecomeae' in your above template. But why it's not working while giving family name 'Rubiaceae' in http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Randia_dumetorum - J.M.Garg (talk) 17:37, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

Hi, Carol ji. Is this subcategorisation OK- http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Croton_bonplandianus ? J.M.Garg (talk) 04:14, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

I have started doing it, looking for the tribe in Google search for genus + Wikimedia. See it & confirm if it's OK- http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Senna_auriculata J.M.Garg (talk) 05:48, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

Commelina caroliniana photos appear to be misidentified

I recently noticed that you added several photos of a Commelina species under the name Commelina caroliniana. I have been interning for a specialist on Commelinaceae for the past two years and recently completed some research on the distribution of Commelina caroliniana in the United States. I am afraid that your photos are certainly not Commelina caroliniana. I am not familiar enough with the genus in India to know which species your photos are of, but Commelina caroliniana does not have a fused spathe margin, which the plants you have photographed all have. Furthermore, C. caroliniana has hairless leaves, solitary spathes which lack contrasting veins, and usually maroon spots on the antherodes, among other characters, none of which are represented in the species that you have photographed. Your photos are of great quality and should be included in their appropriate article, but I am afraid they do not represent Commelina caroliniana. I will ask my supervisor to help me identify the species which you have photographed and I will get back to you. They look somewhat like Commelina erecta to me, but again I am not familiar with most Indian species, and the genus is especially rich there. Thanks! Djlayton4 (talk) 05:06, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

According to my supervisor Robert B. Faden from the Smithsonian National Natural History Museum in Washington D.C., your photographs are of Commelina kurzii C.B. Clarke. The species is sometimes incorrectly place in synonymy with Commelina erecta. Will you make the changes to the descriptions and file names or shall I? Djlayton4 (talk) 21:49, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, Djlayton. I have corrected description & category all the above mentioned images as Commelina kurzii. J.M.Garg (talk) 08:42, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

Herons

Hi JM. I am currently designing a slideshow video to accompany the Spanish Christmas Song Riu Riu Chiu (the line io vi mil garzones = I saw a thousand herons...). Your photos of herons would be very useful in this project, which will eventually go on YouTube. Can you confirm whether you would have any objections to me using cut sections of the photos or whether you would insist on the entire photo only? I shall of course identify you as the author of the heron photo in the description. Dwsolo (talk) 17:09, 28 November 2008 (UTC)
