Categories[edit]

Please do not include the Category:People by name manually. It will be set automatically via the wikidata infobox. Also the category Men / Women by name or by country. Thank you! NeverDoING (talk) 13:16, 24 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

NeverDoING, read and taken into account. it seems that "Cat-a-lot" does not recognize the categorizations made by "templates" and puts again the item in the same category. I didn't know that, and I'll be more careful next time. Regards
JotaCartas (talk) 04:30, 25 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
NeverDoING, please enlighten me. If a person article as no "Wikidata Infobox" or is in "Category:Uses of Wikidata Infobox with no item" can/must be placed manually in the Categories: "People by name", "Men/Women by name", "Men/Women in Portugal by name" ? Thanks

Surnames[edit]

Hi JotaCartas,

can I ask you why are you adding "Category:Surnames" to categories that already have "Category:Italian-language surnames"? Ivanbranco (talk) 07:57, 9 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

hi, I'm just following the instructions on the top of Category:Surnames: "This category gathers all sub-categories related to its parent category in a non-hierarchical list, including those that would normally only be found via intermediate sub-categories.". it has about 119,390 members total. I do not see any reason to left "italian-language surnames" out of this, salute JotaCartas (talk) 11:32, 9 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Well, to explain it better. I don't care/mind that the articles you reversed are put in "Category:Surnames". But, as I do many automatic edits with "batch" tools, it is possible that I put them back in "Surnames" without realizing that I am reversing your edition. That will not be my intention.

Category:De (Germanic surname particle)[edit]

Please could you kindly tell me why you added the above category to Category:De Pulteney (surname)? De Pulteney is an Old English name, derived from Old French meaning "of", dating from the 11th century Noman invasion, when Anglo Normans were expected to invent a surname for themselves. At that time, many people named their family after their home town or village, or after their lands if they were rich. In that context in the 11th century, "de" was, and still is, French. The first known use of the Anglo-Norman name De Pulteney was in Leicestershire, England. De Pulteney was never a Saxon name because the Saxon "der" meant "the", whereas in "De Pulteney" it means "of" because the family came from Poultney. All the English Norman names, beginning "de", have the Old French origin. A general rule for very old English surnames beginning "de" is, if it means "of (a place)" it's Old French. Storye book (talk) 21:06, 23 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Storye book, first of all I'm not an expert linguist. I Sorted over 3,000 surname particles, and a lot of "De's". As there are is "De Latin" and "De Germanic", I used the country of origin for the classification (eg France -> Latin; England->Germanic, etc.).
I requested some help here but I got no real answers.
I made a lot of mistakes, but since then I reactivated the "De (surname particle)" category, where I started to classify all "DE's". I believe you are right, and please revert my wrong edits. Thanks and best regards. JotaCartas (talk) 21:48, 23 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. However, the Wikidata infobox for "De" has got it right, because it gives the origin as many languages, including French. So what we need to do is to remove "Germanic" from the category name, to make it Category:De (surname particle) - that category already exists, anyway. Hope that helps. Was there any discussion before you got rid of this? It's not clear to me that Category:Surnames is, itself, a flat list: I see several subcats right at the beginning. Also, do you have a plan for the large number of subcats that are now in this orphaned category? - Jmabel ! talk 18:44, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Really... what to say. Of course you're right, but it could be that my first mistake was at the beginning when I created the category "Surnames (flat list)" without any consensus. It was useful for me to populate the "Surnames" category (about 80,000 members), but no one else was using it, and if I stop updating it, will run out of data very quickly. I'll stop for now what I was doing. I will respond again (very soon) with updated numbers of what is happening with the categories in question. Best regards JotaCartas (talk) 20:16, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Stopped. At the moment there are abou 6.000 surnames in the old ̩"Surnames (flat list)" that are not in the "Surnames" category). But all of them are under the Category "Surnames by language" and "Surnames by ethnicity". Please see ̪PSID 25027632 and PSID 25027633. --JotaCartas (talk) 20:56, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. It does seem to me we need a flat list, and that Category:Surnames isn't going to be it, given that it has subcats that aren't individual surnames. - Jmabel ! talk 21:39, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ukrainian surnames that ends with -enko[edit]

HI! I have information for you. Please remember that all surnames that end in -enko are either Ukrainian or of Ukrainian origin. And not Russian at all. Thank you for your attention, I hope for constructive work. The center of Kievan Rus was Kyiv, not Moscow. Good luck. PS. surnames can be an exception to this - Category:Guzenko (surname), Category:Ageyenko (surname), Category:Gerasimenko (surname) etc. Бучач-Львів (talk) 11:32, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Бучач-Львів. Firstː Thank you for your corrections. Secondː I belive you are wright and I have made some mistakes ... but, the classification I have made was based in en:Category:Russian-language surnames and/or in the correspondente item in wikidata (with the help of some batch tools). I will correct the refereed entries in order to prevent future unintentional errors (maybe you can also correct in enːwikipwdia and wikidata). bests regards JotaCartas (talk) 12:28, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

but... in general, this is not such a simple topic, so I’ll ask you not to refrain from editing yet (sorry, your page doesn’t say anything about the level of proficiency in Ukrainian, Belarusian and Russian). Thanks --Бучач-Львів (talk) 12:10, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again Бучач-Львів. Here is a list of Ukrainian surnames that are classified also as Russian surnames in wikidata and others wuikipedias. I will be very grateful if you can check the items and correct the wrong cases. Thanks again and best regards JotaCartas (talk) 13:00, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

unfortunately we live in a world where there is a lot of untruth... for many people in the world everything. what used to be Soviet is Russian ... even when it is obvious stupidity ... --Бучач-Львів (talk) 13:01, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Another detail is that indeed many Russian surnames are very similar to Ukrainian ones, because they come from them. F. e. Category:Guzenko (surname), Category:Ageyenko (surname), Category:Gerasimenko (surname)... Ukrainian originals - Category:Huzenko (surname), Category:Aheienko (surname) (or Aheyenko), Category:Herasymenko (surname). --Бучач-Львів (talk) 13:05, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed I understand this is a difficult topic (as you said, I have no special proficiency in the matter). So, I will avoid classifying ukrainian surnames in the future, kind regards JotaCartas (talk) 13:15, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Another problem is transliteration from Russian. Often it does not reflect the real sound of Russian surnames. Of those methods that I know, it displays quite well the difference between Ukrainian and Russian languages, there is their transliteration in the Polish alphabet. But even this method does not always convey the difference ... --Бучач-Львів (talk) 13:12, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Japanese surnames[edit]

Hello! Please fix your mistakes. You added another category to Japanese surnames... Russian surnames (f.e. Category:Uebayashi (surname)... I count on your responsibility. I have already corrected some of your mistakes, but, unfortunately, I see that there are too many of them. Good luck. Бучач-Львів (talk) 06:46, 19 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Errors fixed. The reason of my mistake was — the "transliteration language" of the related wikidata item was "Russian".
I think that now all errors are reversed, but I will look to see if I made other mistakes due to the explanation I gave above. Thanks JotaCartas (talk) 08:27, 19 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello again Бучач-Львів. After removing about 715 surnames (also in ̩Japanese-language surnames), I searched in all other languages (besides Japanese) and I removed 12 more surnames misclassified under "Russian". I believe that all my mistakes have been reversed. thank you again. JotaCartas (talk) 10:01, 19 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Canhoneira Raúl Cascais[edit]

Olá JC I wonder whether you would kindly re-crop this image: File:Canhoneira Raúl Cascais (1).jpg, so that the ship is more central - the stern away from the edge. Thanks in advance. Davidships (talk) 01:47, 27 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) you should not be doing this sort of crop as an overwrite on an archival photo, in any case. @Davidships: I'll restore the original version on that page and crop out a version (linked from that page) for your use. - Jmabel ! talk 03:00, 27 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Its OK with me, thanks JotaCartas (talk) 04:28, 27 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
