Question Socrates on Trial poster[edit]

Hi. May I ask why the black and white poster image was deleted from the Socrates on Trial page? (The copyright holder gave permission for it to be moved into the public domain.) Thanks.

Question about derivative works[edit]

Hi. Does a convention goer at a comic book convention dressed up as a copyright-protected character like Batman Beyond constitute a derivative work? Thanks? Nightscream (talk) 09:31, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

In my opinion if its a really good costume, such that a picture of the cosplayer could be used to substitute for a picture from the copyright holders official pictures, then I would consider it a derivative work.KTo288 (talk) 23:13, 4 October 2010 (UTC)
So a photo of a cosplayer in a Batman Beyond costume would not be an appropriate addition to the BB article, as in, say, a section on that property's cultural influence? Nightscream (talk) 05:48, 5 October 2010 (UTC)
For me there would be two issues with such an image, one as a Commoner and one as a Wikipedian. I can't say without seeing the image but I have deleted pictures of cosplayers as derivative works, if I as a bit of a fanboy have to scratch my head and can't make out who the player is then I usually let them be. The other is as a wikipedian a derivative work as a copyvio has to be absolutely essential to be included, and not be added just because it would be nice to have a picture or that you have a picture available, and if its a low quality image or one in which the subject is ambiguous it really doesn't belong. To me an image to show cultural impact is not significant enough to add the image.KTo288 (talk) 09:26, 5 October 2010 (UTC)

When you mention not being able to make out who the player is, you mean which character they're supposed to be, right?

Also, you mentioned above that the quality of the costume is a criterion. When you said this, was this also part of being able to ID the character? I ask, because of the two players I snapped, the one of Batman Beyond is an excellent costume, though the other, of Optimus Prime, while highly impressive for its creativity (it involved attaching lots of found metal components to regular clothing), is clearly not a store-bought costume, as the Batman Beyond one appeared to be. Nightscream (talk) 14:09, 5 October 2010 (UTC)

The discussion at Commons:Deletion requests/Images of costumes tagged as copyvios by AnimeFan reflects Commons position on this at the moment. Not exactly in line with my own position, but people in costumes should be okay, here, whether such an image is welcome in the article is another matter. Thanks for bringing this up, as until I thought to look it up I thought the outcome of the DR would be to delete, strange that they would conclude that yes that such images are technically copyvios, but copyvios we can keep.--KTo288 (talk) 19:45, 5 October 2010 (UTC)

Moved incorrectly named category[edit]

Hello KTo288/archive October 2010-April 2013, I just did

Rename Category:East German T-54 tanks to Category:T-54 tanks in East German service (2 entries moved, 0 to go)

and

Rename Category:East German T-55A tanks to Category:T-55A tanks in East German service (10 entries moved, 0 to go)

as to comply with commons naming rules and the naming in its contained subcategories.

Thanks and greetings. --High Contrast (talk) 17:17, 9 April 2011 (UTC)

No problem. Thanks.--KTo288 (talk) 22:43, 18 April 2011 (UTC)

Help?![edit]

Hey, sorry! I have question!

If i edit not my work and send this work to the commons , it's not may work?

Beacuse if it not my work, then someone must delete this :(:

sorry :( --Muffi (talk) 23:24, 18 April 2011 (UTC)
No problem, have a look at the sections above this one, we all make mistakes, live and learn and make good the mistakes we've made. Okay so as I understand it, you took pictures of which you were not the original author, you edited/modified these images in some way and then uploaded them to Commons. In such a case you have created a derivative work and unless the original author gave you permission or the orginal file was licensed in such a way as to allow you to do so such files cannot be kept here, and since you raised it I guess you do not have such permissions. Give me a moment to look through them and I'll sort it out.--KTo288 (talk) 23:46, 18 April 2011 (UTC)
Sorted but not by me, spent too much time.--KTo288 (talk) 23:50, 18 April 2011 (UTC)

Delete vote mistaken[edit]

You voted to delete at [[1]] based on the Wikipedia deletion, but that deletion was for reason "F8 - identical image on Commons". So there's no copyright or other reason that was accepted for that deletion. Wnt (talk) 17:35, 27 July 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for your correction.--KTo288 (talk) 12:46, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

"No FOP in France"[edit]

Bonjour KTo288,

Je viens de supprimer une de tes photos qui représent un bâtiment récent (un édicule Guimard). Il n'y a en effet pas de liberté de panorama en France, et même si c'est bien dommage, Commons se doit de respecter cette interdiction.

No, no, it's Ok. I saw in my mail the warning, and when I went to the link, the photo was deteted. If that photo have problems of copyright (because of coins of London Tower), I understand and accept the delection. --Drow male (talk) 16:44, 11 May 2012 (UTC)

DR closure[edit]

I have created an AN/U for your wrongful closure of that DR. Fry1989 eh? 19:44, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

It was your perogative to do so. I'll reply to you here, since that thread has been closed, DRs are for the discussion of files with copyright and policy problems, this file had neither, in my opinon the DR was the wrong venue for this dispute.--KTo288 (talk) 07:45, 16 May 2012 (UTC)
DRs are for requesting deletion. For whatever reason. Very heavy-handed to use of admin buttons. /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 09:26, 16 May 2012 (UTC)

My heartfelt thanks to you for the ‘Barnstar’ that you awarded me! It encouraged me a lot, and shows that I am on the right way. If you have any suggestions or Instructions, please let me know. No instructions, just continue to do as you have been doing, you're doing a very good job, just don't be disheartened when some images need to be deleted because of Freedom of Panorama concerns.--KTo288 (talk) 09:53, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

Category:Flooding of the Lake Champlain basin and Richelieu River in 2011[edit]

Why changing to an English name for an event mostly in French Quebec?

Pierre cb (talk) 13:52, 1 December 2012 (UTC)

See Commons:Naming_categories#Language, category names are normally in English.--KTo288 (talk) 17:26, 1 December 2012 (UTC)
Sorry if I did not take into account Quebecois sensitivities when renaming this category, no insult against the French language or the Quebecois is intended, its just that Commons categorisation should normally be in English. I have no wish to make this a personal matter between yourself and me and have opened a Categories for discussion on the naming of this category. I will comment no further on this CfD, and will not edit this category or the files within it as they relate to this name until the community decides on how this category should be named, e.g. I will add categories to the parent category and individual files but will not rename them.--KTo288 (talk) 18:07, 1 December 2012 (UTC)
OK, that is a good way of doing it. Pierre cb (talk) 19:11, 1 December 2012 (UTC)

Commons:Deletion requests/File:Penile curvature-TW.jpg[edit]

User:Ganlin88 has uploaded a series of very useful sex education images, 2 of which are in use on the Chinese Wikipedia. However the copyright status and license of these images, and that of the photographs and graphics that were used to build them, has been questioned. Ganlin88 has tried to explain, but the language barrier has defeated us. We need an admin who is fluent in English and Chinese. It would really help us if you could talk to this user and sort this out. --Simonxag (talk) 01:59, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

please explain[edit]

Hello mister. Can you explain why my photos of action figures was deleted? In wikicommons lots of action figures photos, why you delete my photos, but not all others (action figures photos)? --WikiFido (talk) 04:47, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

See category description at Category:Action figures as to why they are deleted, see specifically Commons:Derivative_works#I_know_that_I_can.27t_upload_photos_of_copyrighted_art_.28like_paintings_and_statues.29.2C_but_what_about_toys.3F_Toys_are_not_art.21 some files are not deleted because the action figure is incidental to the file (de minimis), are not fully shown, or are old or cannot be clearly identified as the product of a particular company. Some users knowing that we delete action figure pictures on sight hide their uploads so its not as easy to find and delete them, if you know where such files are hidden, I'll be more than grateful.
If you believe that I have been mistaken in speedily deleting your uploads, I can restore them and open a regualar deletion debate.--KTo288 (talk) 14:28, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

I found this in 5 minutes:

  • Sora 100px,
  • Kitty White Hello Kitty.jpg,
  • Gabumon from Digimon 100px,
  • Appa from The Last Airbender 100px,
  • Selina Kyle/Catwoman 100px,
  • Bane 100px,
  • André 100px,
  • Glen Jacobs as Kane 100px,
  • Diamond Dallas Page 80px.

Do you delete all of this or what? --WikiFido (talk) 15:46, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

Sure, thanks.--KTo288 (talk) 16:21, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
Actually on second thoughts, deleting them myself out of hand is a bit pointy, just to show its not just a personal intepertation with regards the deletion about action figures, I'll not delete them but tag them for speedy and see how long they last for.--KTo288 (talk) 16:51, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

Mowag Pictures for Wiki commens[edit]

Hello, I saw that you worked for some time ago on the Wikimedia commons page Category:MOWAG.

The story is, that i was in the Military Museum Full and made photos of some seldom MOWAG Tanks like the Mowag Trojan [File:MOWAG Trojan top.JPG], MOWAG Shark, MOWAG Puma, MOWAG Piranha 4x4 and so one. i would like to put them into the Wikimedia commons page Category:MOWAG but i dident found out how i can do this. can you help me? Kobel (talk) 13:36, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

Okay there are two things to be clear about, in Commons we have both categories and pages, and sometimes they look the same but do different things and work differently. Category:MOWAG is a category not a page, to add an image to the category you need to edit the file not the category, clone and paste [[Category:MOWAG]] (including the brackets) and add it to the file.
We don't have a page called MOWAG, though one can be created, if you are familiar with galleries at en wiki or the other wikipedias, pages here work like a gallery there.--KTo288 (talk) 22:55, 26 February 2013 (UTC)

MOWAG[edit]

Hello, It makes no sens to delet this pictures. they are also part of the Museum, so i made Pictures from the real vehicles and also from them. So this are photos of exhibition pieces. And also very value for the history of MOWAG. 85.1.75.33 14:58, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

Its okf you take photos of actual vehicles yourself, taking photos of photos someone else takes creates a derivative work, see the links I added to your page.--KTo288 (talk) 21:44, 28 February 2013 (UTC)

Family photos[edit]

Hey mate, it's interesting comments you make on "family snapshots" that you make. As you probably know, I've recently being uploading tons of photos from Flickr to Commons, and one of the streams I've uploaded is Category:Images from the National Library of Ireland. In amongst this, and other similar streams, there are what we would deem to be "family snapshots", but should we delete those? I would say no, because they clearly provide us with an insight into families, dress, etc during the era that photos were taken. The same could hold true to the modern era. Particular as we aren't just meant for immediate use, but future generations could obviously find family photos from this era of use for educational purposes in their era. What you think? russavia (talk) 05:25, 11 March 2013 (UTC)

What came up was that we should perhaps keep digitised prints, depending on their merits, from before digital media made capturingimages very common.--KTo288 (talk) 13:56, 11 March 2013 (UTC)

Xian Ni Xianna Xianting Xian Ni (chinesisch 仙妮 Xiānnī), auch Xianni en. Princess Jeannie Xianna (hiina keeles 仙妮 Xiānnā, inglise keeles Princess Sheena) Xianting (hiina keeles 憲庭 Xiānting, inglise keeles Princess Elaine)

English one looks okay to me. The Chinese characters for Xian Na is wrong though, checked and it should be 仙娜. Translating the names is not really that useful, Xian in Xian Ni and Xian Na basicaly mean immortal or fairy. Xian Ting if you translated it directly would be Constitutional Court, which doesn't really make sense here, I think they just wanted similar sounding but distinct names for their ships.--KTo288 (talk) 21:44, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
  • Good morning, KTo288, thank You for Your help, the name is very important for me, we have got a picture with low resolution Princess Jeannie (ship, 1993) 001.jpg than I can't read the name of ship in Chinese above the XIAN NI, can You give the Chinese discription on this page Xian Ni, thanks,--PjotrMahh1 (talk) 08:30, 16 March 2013 (UTC) An article about 仙娜号游船--PjotrMahh1 (talk) 09:09, 16 March 2013 (UTC)

Explain[edit]

I take it is with regards the Nicholas Tse images that you want an explaination. The deleted images were obvious copyvios, a scan from a magazine, a scan from the booklet that comes with a CD, and what looks like as a screenshot from a film, the others I've tagged as unknown source. The source you have given is nicholas Tse himself-not your friend. To be freely used on Commons, the source of the files must be clear, for example because you say the source is your friend and not yourself, you must give your friend's name and an email to the OTRS team from your friend saying that he/she is happy to release the file with a free license, and I've just noticed that you haven't added a license.--KTo288 (talk) 18:25, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
Please do not blank out conversations on my talk page, you are free to blank your own if you wish, but out of transparency, I like to have my own conversations for good or bad for everybody to see.
With regards your question please see Commons:OTRS.--KTo288 (talk) 18:47, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

You must be clear, you can contact him directly, but he does not have wiki, you do not give me that. I also do not want to say anything, whatever

Alexander Ipatov photo[edit]

Hi, thanks for the alert on this. I still find it confusing, as it looks like the licenses match to me. I'd delete it myself if I could, but I dont' see that capability, so I have to wait for someone at WIkipedia to delete it? Thanks also for the link to the Flikr bot! 174.45.140.146 20:57, 4 April 2013 (UTC)

The licences are to allow reusers of the file to do whatever they want with the file. The best thing to do is to use the bot, and it will work out if the file is allowable. Have a read of Commons:Licensing when you have the time.--KTo288 (talk) 21:08, 4 April 2013 (UTC)

Thanks, will do! Commonplace Book (talk) 21:21, 4 April 2013 (UTC)

I've just noticed a nuance to your statement that I missed the first times. No one from wikipedia would have deleted it because this is Commons not Wikipedia. The mission, culture and ethos here are slightly different. Users of files are not just restricted to Wikipedia or even the wikimedia projects. If someone wants to take a file from here and turn it into posters, postcards or put it on t-shirts and sell them for their own profit, then our permissible licences should allow them to do so. If someone wants to deface a file, crop it paste rude icons onto it etc, similarly the licenses should allow them to do so.--KTo288 (talk) 21:28, 4 April 2013 (UTC)

Hello, i marked these images as deletable: File:Milano prefissi.png File:Lombardia.png File:Italia distretti.png File:Cremona.png because i made and uploaded them, but i never used them. Aftewards i uploaded further revisions of all four images but as new images, not as revisions. So now these four images are redundants and not used by any page. I chose to delete them because i uploaded a lot of images, and these useless images break off my todo list. Thanks you Karplus (talk) 10:33, 10 April 2013 (UTC)

There are plenty of unused files, even families of very similar unused ones, unless exact duplicates there's no harm in not deleting them. At the very least serve as a record of how things were at a certain time, however if it really does bug you, because something hasn't been crossed off your todo list, renominate them and I'll let someone else decide on whether to keep them. If you think they are redundant because they have been supercession, add a link to the new file within the deletion rationale.--KTo288 (talk) 16:09, 10 April 2013 (UTC)

Deletion of some picture from japan[edit]

First of all it would be common courtesy to wait for my feedback before deleting the picture in question and secondly the link you've provided explains about nothing, on the contrary one might even conclude there is no problem at all.

Be that as it may, if i had to guess the issue is with the picture of the interior of some samurai houses (which are publicly accessible)? If there is indeed a legal issue related to that, they need to be removed of course. However I'd like to see a concrete reasoning/explanation about the exact legal problem and where the info regarding that can be found in Commons.--Kmhkmh (talk) 15:02, 12 April 2013 (UTC)

The images deleted were of a statue of a female figure on a lake side. It was nominated for speedy by another editor and deleted by me because although Freedom of Panorama exists for artistic works in Japan, it restricts any pictures created to non-commercial use, which is incompatiable with Commons.
See Commons:Freedom_of_panorama#Japan its a more detailed version of the German link I added. If you feel that the file as deleted in error you can request its undeletion at Commons:Undeletion requests.
On the subject of interiors of samurai houses (of which I have not deleted any) these may or may not fall foul of Commons use, if the contents are of utilitarian objects, that is of items with normal everyday uses than there would normally be no problem. If it is of objects which have no purpose other than for decoration than files would be derivative works and would only be able to be kept if 50 years or more has elapsed since the death of the creator. Objects d'art (utilitarian objects that have been embellished and decorated to the point that they are unique works of art) which many samurai objects are, would require a DR.--KTo288 (talk) 14:28, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
Your files were nominated for speedy by User:掬茶 with the deletion rationale was ...no FOP in source country. photo of the art work of Yasutake Funakoshi w:ja:舟越保武 (1912-2002).--KTo288 (talk) 14:34, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
Ok now this comes as complete surprise to me. Does that mean Commons cannot have pictures of statues/artwork in public places, such as public squares and parks? What architecture or pictures/artworks on exterior walls of a building?
What about the individual wikipedias then in particular something like the "fair use"-approach in en.wp?---Kmhkmh (talk) 05:23, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
It depends on the country, for Japan, the USA any statue that is a new work is liable to be deleted even if it is in a public place. Even in countries with FOP are not safe, we had to delete images of art works in Germany and the Netherlands because the artist was based in the United States. I tear my hair out sometimes, but the ethos here and at Wikipedia are different, we do not host fair use images here because part of our scope is that we allow free reuse of our files by anybody, not just the wilimedia projects.--KTo288 (talk) 09:22, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
Well i know that Commons can't do fair use. What I'm trying to ascertain is, whether it makes sense to upload the picture again on some individual wikipedias, either as illustration for tazawako, the town at the lake or the artist (who is dead since 2002).--Kmhkmh (talk) 10:22, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
English would probably be okay, Spanish no, Japanese probably no. Others I'm less familiar with.--KTo288 (talk) 13:01, 14 April 2013 (UTC)

New[edit]

So, Wikimedia will host all kinds of images and Wikipedia select only good ones. Isn't that right? What are "local projects"?

ApltNair (talk) 10:10, 15 April 2013 (UTC)ApltNair (talk) 10:11, 15 April 2013 (UTC)

Have a look in the top left hand corner, that tells you which project you are editing. At the moment you are actually editing en:Wikimedia Commons, not Wikipedia. The en:wikimedia foundation runs many projects of which [[:en:Wikipedia] is merely the best known, even within Wikipedia there are multiple language projects, English, Hindi, Urdu etc, all in all there are over 730 Wikimedia projects, which we refer to as local projects, Commons serves as a repository of media files for those local projects (and anyone ele for that matter). Have a look at Commons:Project scope, and with regards maps the eassay Commons:Disputed territories.--KTo288 (talk) 16:40, 15 April 2013 (UTC)
