Marcus Tullius Cicero[edit]

Hello Kae.
Thank you for reviewing the photo of the bust of Cicero.
As I said in the review page, it is my first attempt to "isolate" or cut off so an object from its natural background. I used "The GIMP" for extracting the bust as foreground, but it was not a success (because of the similarity of colors between the fac and the BG). Then, I "painted" in black all around the object. I was very careful, by magnifying the pic in 400% resolution, and I worked almost pixel after pixel ! Please could you say to me if all the work is bad, or if only some parts are (then, show me) ? It seems that I need help for improvements in this maters.
If you know how I could do better, or if you know some links for tutorials, I should be happy for reading news from you !
Anyway, Thanks again for review. No worries for your decline vote !
Kind regards from Paris,--Jebulon (talk) 09:58, 13 September 2010 (UTC)

  • A few hours later, me, back.

I've found now a lot of tutos in French. All a new world for me ! You are right, it can be much more better. I'll improve it. Thanks again --Jebulon (talk) 16:32, 13 September 2010 (UTC)

Example of background removing (areas with different "feather")
Good, but I already wrote something too :-). Here it is:
My understanding of background replacement in Gimp (example should be seen at 100% scale).
  • Open your picture in Gimp.
  • Create new layer below layer which contains your image.
  • Fill this new layer with some color (dark green in example) strongly differing from original image background.
  • Switch back to image layer
  • Look at boundary between object and background. Note that sharpness of this boundary is different (because some parts of object are out of focus).
  • Let's start from most sharp area (labeled with "Feather=2,5").
    1. Switch to "lasso selection" tool
    2. Outline area of background by some clicks along boundary, enclose selection by clicking to first point.
    3. Look at boundary between object and background and determine what is the width of transition between object and background. In this area it is about 2,5 pixels (depends on sharpness in this area of picture).
    4. Use "Feather" command with value defined in previous step (i.e. 2,5). It makes boundary of selection smooth.
    5. Delete selected area ("Del" key). After that you will see "hole" into background layer.
  • Do same steps in other areas of background. Every area has it's own value of feather.
  • Note that I left some amount of original background between areas "4" and "7,5". It is for illustration purpose only. Really adjacent areas must overlap.
  • When all the original background is removed, you can paint background layer to other color to choose the best one.
