Categories[edit]

Hi Leonardorejorge, putting the images into Category:Unknown XY is correct, don't put them in Category:XY. Then it is clear that they are only identified to a certain level and not to the species. Regards and welcome to Commons, --Hsuepfle 22:05, 10 December 2007 (UTC) PS: I have moved some of the unknown butterflies or unidentifiable by myself from Category:Lepidoptera to Unknown butterflies. Maybe you can help to clean up this category if you know the familily or species.

Thanks for making contact[edit]

I'm very open to how we organize this section of images. I'm sure there are several good ways of doing it.

One very helpful thing for us is that, unlike scientific classification, user-friendliness classification allows multiple non-exclusive superset memberships. Sorry for that garbled jargon, what I mean is clearer by example. The illustrations from the voyage of the Navarra fit into several categories. They are useful for historians—national, linguistic and biographical—artists and librarians as well as for entomologists or other biological sciences. They are also just plain beautiful and potentially useful in all sorts of places.

So, there's nothing to stop us, and everything to encourage us, to provide multiple categories as much as possible. We don't need to exclude categories, or images from categories, we will probably generally serve best by multiply indexing images.

The way I think of it, we need a system that allows non-specialists to add and find images quickly. I think that means making maximum use of the ordinary language words butterfly, moth and caterpillar.

I'll think some more and try to make some specific recommendations. At the moment, I think the main problems are: 1. Lepidoptera doesn't mean butterfly, but that's where all butterfly images have been ending up by default; and 2. the Lepidoptera category is crowded because there are so many families of moths. Ultimately, I think we're going to end up with a crowded category at "Moth families", whatever we call that (currently it is Lepidoptera), but I'm keen for butterflies to be handled so non specialists can donate and find images of butterflies as easily as possible, and all that needs is separating them from all the moth families. Categories on Commons[edit]

Hi Leonardo, thanks for letting me know why you are deleting these categories, I was under the impression that adding them increased the chances of someone finding the images and was baffled why you and others kept deleting them. I'm still not 100% sure that it is the 'correct-policy' or just your 'point-of-view' but at least I now know why and will endeavour to find out more. Aviceda (talk) 04:36, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

Diptera[edit]

Hi Leonardorejorge; Thank you.[1] I wonder if you might have a look at File:Grindelia_integrifolia_2782.JPG, please? Best wishes, Walter Siegmund (talk) 16:48, 9 February 2010 (UTC)

Thank you.[2] Walter Siegmund (talk) 21:11, 9 February 2010 (UTC)

I wonder if you would be kind enough to check File:Tenthredo sp. 6587.JPG, please? Also, I wonder if categories might be added to or the description improved for the following files?

Best wishes, Walter Siegmund (talk) 00:27, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

Hey, Wsiegmund, Nevermind, it was a pleasure to be able to put these images in the proper categories. I've tried to classify them as specifically as I could. Let's hope some specialist sees them now, so a better classification is achieved.Leonardo (talk) 00:55, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
Leonardorejorge, you are too kind. You cleared out my backlog of uncategorized insects. You didn't comment on File:Tenthredo sp. 6587.JPG, so I'm assuming that it is correctly categorized. Best wishes, Walter Siegmund (talk) 02:10, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
No problem. About the file File:Tenthredo sp. 6587.JPG, I can't say whether it is correct (I don't think I have ever seen a sawfly, they are surprisingly rare in the tropics), but if the identification is correct, you categorized properly. Best regards,Leonardo (talk) 02:19, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
I'll leave it be. I don't think it is grossly wrong. We have 10,000 species of insects in our region and I'm finding it a challenge to learn 1000+ vascular plants. Best wishes, Walter Siegmund (talk) 02:32, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

Identification of Diptera[edit]

Dear Leonardorejorge, I'm unable to identify all families in Diptera but it seems to be that your knowledge isn't better. The image File:Kelsterbach fg01.jpg shows a Bombyliidae - this family is easy to identify for all Dipterists and completely different from Syrphidae. Please do not change indentifications without having the experience. Thank you. --Dysmachus (talk) 19:58, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

The image File:Picture 062 cropped.jpg doesn't show a robber fly (legs and antenna is quite different). --Dysmachus (talk) 07:06, 6 September 2010 (UTC)

Hi Leonardorejorge,

Could this caterpillar be a Morpho peleides? Because I think this was the only representativ of the Morpho genus at that exhibition. DenesFeri (talk) 08:46, 19 August 2011 (UTC)

OK, than. DenesFeri (talk) 13:02, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

This is a Caligo memnon larva File:Caligo memnon larve 001.JPG. There were also Caligo memnon butterflies as well. DenesFeri (talk) 13:34, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

And this is Morpho peleides File:Morpho peleides catepillar.jpg. My pictures look like Caligo memnon larva. No? DenesFeri (talk) 13:38, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

bugguide.net[edit]

Hi Leonardorejorge,

I uploaded some pictures on the bugguide.net, but they wasn't happy, because my bugs are not from North-America. They were so kind to identify some butterflies. Could you tell me a site which identify european bugs? Thanks. DenesFeri (talk) 15:07, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

OK, thank you! Another thing; I don't have only butterflies, but also other insects, like odonata, brachycera and others. Probably the uk butterflies won't be happy if I upload others than butterflies. DenesFeri (talk) 15:28, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

Hi,

Someone on buggide.net give me this site www.whatsthatbug.com . This site accept all the bugs. Whats your opinion about this site? Regards. DenesFeri (talk) 07:57, 28 August 2011 (UTC)
