Foundry Painter

With reference to the Tondo Kylix by the Foundry Painter 480 b.c. of a woman urinating: I believe that it should be considered that she is giving birth. The line from the pubic to naval is a particular feature of women during pregnancy and I can't imagine another reason it would have been indicated here other than to denote a pregnancy. Also, this is not an obligatory position for female urination, but it is for giving birth.

No, definetly not. This is e hetaira - this is of course not the obligatory position for female urination - because this is a "show" for the male audience. The image sadly don't show the whole scene. At the original in Berlin you can see the urine stream. It's also common in science, that this is an urination. There's no doubt. But it's interesting, what you say. But at the end you're view is caused of the not so good image. Marcus Cyron (talk) 13:19, 7 February 2009 (UTC)
The Flickr images found in Joe Genario's photostream have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Marcus Cyron (talk) 10:46, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
German translations

Hi Marcus,

As I just achieved to make the museum templates (like ) autotranslatable, we need now more translations. Can you propose a German translation for each fields ("Artist/Maker", "Description", etc.)?

Thanks. Bibi Saint-Pol (sprechen) 12:53, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

I will try my best :). Marcus Cyron (talk) 18:08, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
PS: Where and how to change? Marcus Cyron (talk) 18:10, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
Bibi's probably referring to Meta information museum, which is called by . To create a new translation for Meta information museum, simply visit the template page and use the inputbox at the bottom of the page. This will take you to an edit window, where the English version is preloaded. Replace the English strings with German ones and you're done. Regards, -- ChrisiPK (Talk|Contribs) 18:40, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
I must admit this is not that simple... So if you want you can just write me the translations, I'll integrate them where necessary. Bibi Saint-Pol (sprechen) 19:22, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
OK. Then so:
 • Header (Kopfzeile): Staatliche Antikensammlungen, München, Deutschland
 • Artist/Maker: Künstler/Produzent
 • Description: Beschreibung
 • Dimensions: Ausmaße
 • Credit line: (???)
 • Accession number: Inventarnummer
 • Location: Standort
 • References: Anmerkungen
 • Source/Photographer: Herkunft/Fotograf
 • Other versions: Andere Versionen

-- Marcus Cyron (talk) 17:50, 2 April 2009 (UTC)

OK, I created the German translation. "Credit line" is generally used for the mode of acquisition of the work by the museum (gift, purchase...) and the former collections. Bibi Saint-Pol (sprechen) 09:46, 3 April 2009 (UTC)
OK, then I would call it "Objektgeschichte". Marcus Cyron (talk) 11:14, 3 April 2009 (UTC)
Then it's finished! Bibi Saint-Pol (sprechen) 11:52, 3 April 2009 (UTC)
Wouldn't it rather be "Provenienz"? Just wondering. Jonathan Groß 07:25, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

Hallo Marcus,

Hallo Marcus,

Marcus Cyron (talk) 21:44, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Überschrift

Hallo Marcus,

Memnon Pieta

Hi Marcus,

I could easily recognize it among others... Is it part of the cake (it would very impressive) or just a paper put on the top? I hope it was good anyway!

Are you going to live permanently in Berlin? Bibi Saint-Pol (sprechen) 13:12, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

Look here. It's really part of the Cake. And the Cake was (still is, für 3 persons a lot too much ;)) good. Not the best, but OK. Created by User:Elya (Admin here) and User:Raymond (Commons Oversight).
And yes, I will live permanet in Berlin. So I'm also "bookable" for Pictures there (I was also here in Cologne, but Berlin is ofcourse much more important). And my new Camera isn't one of a Professional, but much better than the old one... ;). Marcus Cyron (talk) 15:29, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
Good news. There is so much to do in Berlin, and I guess with the reopening of the Neues Museum (at the end of the year?) it will be crazy. Guter Umzug! Bibi Saint-Pol (sprechen) 16:26, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
Thanks :). Yes, I will be have a lot do do (and will have a season ticket). Btw - whenever you will be in Berlin, you could find Accomodation by me if you like (same is valid for Jastrow ofcourse, you're both my french heroes ;)). Other thing - I'm actually in contact with the German Archeological Institute, maybe we get in future some images from them. Marcus Cyron (talk) 17:37, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

Marcus Cyron (talk) 21:32, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
Viele Dank!!
Beste Grüße, -- ChrisiPK (Talk|Contribs) 22:38, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
Argh - manchmal ist man auch zu blöd. Dank an ChrisiPK. Marcus Cyron (talk) 13:42, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

Eo Romam

Hi Marcus. I can't remember if I told you -- on Friday I'll fly to Rome. I'm going to stay for 10 days and take as many pictures as I can in museums. As usual, I'll focus on Greco-Roman art. Let me know if you or a German user need pictures about someone or something (I'll have Internet access). Jastrow (Λέγετε) 09:05, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

I'll go to the Vatican Museums indeed. Regarding vases, the Villa Giulia Museum didn't allow pictures three years ago and the Museo Gregoriano Etrusco is closed most of the time... If you have a new request, please add it to User:Jastrow/TODO Rome. Jastrow (Λέγετε) 13:36, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi Marcus, I'm back! I bring back heaps of pictures from Rome, but sadly, I couldn't honour your requests. The Braccio Nuovo, which holds the Augustus of Prima Porta, was closed (chiuso is a word you learn real quick in Italy). The Museo Etrusco Gregoriano had many rooms closed, so I could shoot only a few vases. I want to the Galleria Colonna but they didn't allow pictures; anyway, I didn't see the Knöchelspielerin in the exposed works.

Re your move to Berlin, that's great news for us! I hope I'll be able to spend a week-end there to visit the Museumsinsel. Jastrow (Λέγετε) 18:07, 13 September 2009 (UTC)
Yes, I know it. The National Museum was nearly comlete closed, as I was in Rome. But the Etruscan Museum was all open - I never saw so much Vases like there before ;). But I had no Interest for them at this time ;). At the end, every picture you've made is a little mosaic-stone here. And I would bet, it was'nt the last trip to Rome from one of us. And depending Berlin - I will look forward :). Marcus Cyron (talk) 21:41, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi Marcus,

Could you please delete this file? I had a cruel exposure problem in this exhibition, and most photos I shot are not decent in quality. Thanks. Bibi Saint-Pol (sprechen) 14:54, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

You know, for you I nearly do anything ;) - but - it's better than my older pictures I've uploaded here ;). Marcus Cyron (talk) 12:36, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

Bildverzerrung

Hallo Marcus!

Hi, you write great articles on greek vases. Why don't you try using DSLR for taking photographs? I picked random files File:Volute Krater 450BC Battle Amazons Athen Staatliche Antikensammlungen Starke Frauen0001.jpg, File:Attic_black-figure_Oinochoe_520_BC_14.JPG that show what the difference can be. --Ilya (talk) 17:20, 29 January 2010 (UTC)

Because I don't have the money for such a camera ;). But I will make now tries of the Berlin Exhebition in the next months. With a better Camera. Marcus Cyron (talk) 19:36, 29 January 2010 (UTC)

Verschiebe, bitte

Hallo Marcus, könntest Du bitte diese Dateien verschieben:

Vielen Dank! Jonathan Groß 13:55, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

Gemacht.

--Túrelio (talk) 07:24, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

File:Altes Museum - Antikensammlung 081.JPG has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

When the filename is very generic, like this, it means the the object had no esplication card there... I don't have any further info, I'm sorry. --Sailko (talk) 17:28, 24 July 2010 (UTC)

Loved that it like you. I saw it on wikicakes category and I liked it very much, but then I was a bit sad because the original design wasn't on Commons. I'm not an expert with design programs but I tried to do the same design with the same images..., and voilá! :). Now I have a file with the design, I don't upload it to commons because the original design wasn't too and I'm not sure that it is right, but I will save it on my computer for future uses...:). Tag Removal

Hi Marcus, could you please remove the tag of Craig Driffill in the pictures of the british biathletes, I am now a teacher and do not want my students to have access to these pictures for obvious reasons, thankyou Craig.

Hi Craig, I'm a bit confused - where is the problem with the images? They are totally harmless and you would be a model for a sportive man. For school pupils this is important, I think. Marcus Cyron (talk) 14:41, 27 April 2011 (UTC)

Could you remove my name from the pictures please, thankyou Craig.

I will see, what's the best. Actually I think i will delete them. Without your name the images are not really worth something. Marcus Cyron (talk) 00:11, 12 May 2011 (UTC)

;-) LG Lesekreis (talk) 15:23, 8 December 2011 (UTC)
Was ist schon "wichtig"? Marcus Cyron (talk) 15:47, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

Comments Nice picture, QI for me -- Achim Raschka 09:10, 3 February 2012 (UTC)

Wo klemmt's?. Viele Grüsse, Poco a poco (talk) 20:51, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi Poco. Thank you for your thoughtful comment here. Although obviously I don't agree, I understand both your reasoning and how hard it is to be the lone voice of dissent in a long string of support. I hope that our work together will eliminate your concerns.      Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 11:13, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi. I don't think I'm so alone. But for the most it's not so important. And I don't think I would have given a "no", if there weren't so much "yes". But then I have a Chance to show, that there are problems, we should clear. There never were were concerns against you. Maybe I should had made this more clearly visible. Good luck! :) Marcus Cyron (talk) 13:25, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

Löschung ohne Diskussion

Hallo Marcus! Du hast File:Miki Maloer 1.jpg ohne Diskussion und/oder Benachrichtung meinerseits mit dem Kommentar „false permission (given only for Wikipedia usage -> not really free content” gelöscht. Warum? Alfie↑↓© 10:30, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

Hallo.
Marcus Cyron (talk) 00:48, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

I would remove the background but it would still be your picture. I was wondering if, this being print (so that I can't put a hyperlink), you would want to add any other information to 'Marcus Cyron' in the credits (such as location, an URL, whatever). Just in case, I can be contacted at thechabon aa a t h otm ail d o o t c om. Thanks for uploading that picture. Iiiiaaaa (talk) 22:20, 3 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi. Cool if you wan't to use the picture. I'm fine when you give the Name - but you also need to give the Licence. I think "[your name] using an image made by [my name], CC-BY-SA-3.0" would be an idea (because you also do something with the picture, so you should be named) - but you don't need to write it between the image ;). FTW

Hi, I don't understand German. I uploaded the images following the direction of Italian WLM form, the disclaimer comes automatically, so for any further question please contact the Italian board of the contest. As far as I know we received the autorization to shot in some museums, so anything was in could be uploaded. I also understand that images of the works of art could not win due to the subject, but this is ok for me. My first target is to enrich Commons, not to win the contest. As regards the "very bad" categorization, I am not a specialist in ancient pottery, and I always refer to what I read in the captations and in the descriptions of the museum rooms. I can show you pictures of it. I always have to thank the help of specialists smarter than me, like you, that by the way should thank me too as they can see all that many works of art without going to Arezzo or to a library, but standing comfortably seated in front of their PC. Isn't this "very good"? Regards. --Sailko (talk) 15:40, 20 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi. Problem: You've used a cc-by-sa-Licency - but you also use a template that says, it's not allowed to use the images for every purpose. That's not OK on Commons. I think, we have to delete all your images from the museum. All images on commons have to be free for any use. And - but this is an other point - your descriptions are very bad, the images mostly are not usable, because we don't now, what they show. Attic pottery is given as etruscan, we don't know, what we see. For example the image on the site here. Fauvel Painter is a usefull information. But the Fauvel Painter is an attic painter, not etruscan. With this information we can guess a bit over the date. You never give a date. You never say, what's painted. You never give any discription (the image name is not enough! Images can be moved to other names!) I know how hard this is, how much work. But without informations the images - I know this is hard, but true - useless. But I don't think, I don't want! you're work to be useless! But even with some knowlege in this theme I can't help. There are more than 100.000 ancient greek vases known all over the world. Nobody can know them all. Marcus Cyron (talk) 15:53, 20 October 2012 (UTC)
First, it's not "me" using CC and that tag, it's all the Italian participiants to WLM. Complete category is here, 3000+ files. So don't blame at ME, please. Thank you.
Second, I have uploaded 67.000+ pictures on Commons so far, and I realized, much time ago, I just cannot add a single description to all of them, you just have to raise your eyes a bit and look at the filename. I cannot copy and paste the filename for each of them, it's too much work. Filenames can change, but also descriptions can change, so? I shot the pictures, select them, organize, fix, crop, regulate light, sometimes regulate sharpness and focus, then I put a filename where I describe all the information I have (in Italian, sorry, that's my style), upload and put in the proper categories. I usually describe in objects' filename the author, the title, the period, sometimes I also put the place of origin (if space is enough). It is false I "never give a date", just read: File:Pittore di fauvel, kylix, 425-400 ac. ca.JPG, translated in English it is "Fauvel painter, kylix, about 425-400 BC (last quarter of 5th century BC). I always put the date when it's available. The same is for description of the subject (see another example here, "gynaeceum scene"). If you look here, for instance, there are 9 images uploaded by me, and all have the date. If extra information are not shown it is because they are not provided by the museum captation. So you have to blame the museum, not me, again. Tonight, just to let you see, I will upload the captation of that kylix, so you will see what people can read there (please cancel it then, I think they are not allowed to be uploaded). A useful information I could add is the inventory number, I know, but it's maybe too much job; anyway I keep in my computer a copy of the museum captation, so i can provide it on request. Moreover, I always suppose that if somebody is looking for a specific image, he can go to the category of the museum and just recognize it, even if the description/captation is not the best possible.
Third, I understand I made some mistakes in categorizing one room of that museum, sorry. It was a big room about pottery, which I though all Etruscan, but probably is partially etruscan and partially greek, found in etruscan sites. There is a big lack of information there, so for the categories I just had to guess. I am usually very accurate, but sometime I make mistakes, as everybody. Switching category from Etruscan to Ancient Greek pottery is quite easy, you can do that with the Cat-a-lot gadget in a few seconds. You can also add a description where the filename is wrong (you can write "NB: Filename wrong!"), and maybe later also change the filename. I don't think it's a great problem, it's the wiki style, you see a mistake, you fix it, if you can.
So, dont' get mad at me, ok? And try to safeguard these images, there is a LOT of time and job behind each of those. Thanks.
--Sailko (talk) 17:56, 20 October 2012 (UTC)
Maybe I'm too dumb to say what I want to say. Your images too good than to be useless. That's my point. But - und here I can't accept I have uploaded 67.000+ pictures on Commons so far, and I realized, much time ago, I just cannot add a single description to all of them, you just have to raise your eyes a bit and look at the filename. The Informations are not enough. What we need is ((when known)
 • what do we see
 • who made it
 • where it was made (style)
 • when it was made
 • which shape has it
 • where it was found
 • where it is today
Kylix, pittore di Fauvel (425-450 a.C), that's all!

I work in this field since years - and I often find good images like yours - but I can't use them for articles, because the most or all information we need are missing. This is simply sad. To upload 67.000 images are great! But they need all possible informations. I have on my Laptop 25.000 Images from a lot different colloections, who are waiting for the upload. But I will load them up in the Moment I have the time to do it with the propper information. Today I've tried to clean up the Categories and found there your images - images I mostly can not sort in a correct way. And now I'm frustrated. Marcus Cyron (talk) 22:39, 20 October 2012 (UTC)

Dear Markus, you are absolutely right, but some of the information you need can be found in the filename, other in the categories. I am attaching a the image I took of the captation of that vase in the museum: you can see the lack of more information depends on them, it's not my fault. :(( I am sorry, but what can I do? It's frustrating for me too, I would really love to add all information. PS: I put the image without license, not sure it can stay on Commons, please delete it after you see it. Thanks. --Sailko (talk) 12:23, 22 October 2012 (UTC)
First: as far as I know now, it is actually so, that we not longer delete files from italian museum like in "older times" and "ignore" the opinions depending the right issues outside of Itlay. I'm really fine with that! :) To the Vases: in the german Wikipedia we have the possibility to get Literature from Wikimedia Deutschland or Wikimedia Austria (see there). In the pictures are very often a hint to the CVA (sadly no article in italian, here the link to en:WP). Would you be inerestet in getting the fitting CVA book? Maybe the german literature grant could give you the book! So you (or maybe an other person who speaks italian, I guess, the italian CVAs are written in Italien, so I sadly can't use them) could "upgrade" the picture informations?! Marcus Cyron (talk) 19:26, 22 October 2012 (UTC)
This is very interesting, I didn't know that! Unfortunaly, from the list online, it looks like the Arezzo Museum is not included! Very strange... --Sailko (talk) 13:36, 23 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi Marcus. When you have a moment, could you do me a favor. I decided to occupy my time to list the no-FoP files in Italy. It has been a long and difficult work that needs to be reviewed by administrators. Please, could you check if everything is correct on User:Raoli/Deletion requests/FoP Italy? Thanks! Raoli ✉ (talk) 00:43, 1 December 2012 (UTC)

Hi, If you have time until the 8th of December - I'm comming back from Istanbul not before this date. And until this day I have not really much time for such things :(. Marcus Cyron (talk) 01:40, 1 December 2012 (UTC)
It's perfect. You are great! Raoli ✉ (talk) 02:15, 1 December 2012 (UTC)

Tankard/beer stein

What's with moving all those files from Category:Tankards to Category:Beer steins? Many of these are described as tankards (like the wooden ones from Mary Rose), yet you've decided to redefine them as beer steins. What's the deal here?

Peter Isotalo 17:58, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

You made some rather problematic category alterations and have neither reverted them nor replied to my post. Would you mind commenting on this?
Peter Isotalo 07:09, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Sorry for answering so late, but I had not as much time the last Days. I will not say, that I have a problem in understanding the english terms. But you can be shure I know enough about Ceramics. If you know, where I made Misatakes, please feel free rechange ist. As far as I understand it, I made correct changes. But it is possible, that german and english terms are not ever 1:1 tranlatable. Marcus Cyron (talk) 21:16, 19 February 2013 (UTC) PS: the translation for Tankard and Stein is in german the same. There are no differences.

"Beer stein" has a specific usage in English, whereas "tankard" is more general. Keep in mind that these categories are in English, not German. "Beer stein" is a specific type of ceramic tankard, though I'm not sure exactly where to draw the line. But it's unquestionable that wood or metal tankards should never be categorized as "beer steins". I urge you to correct your own mistakes in this case.

I'm always reluctant to undo another Admin's work without asking if there is something I don't understand. Your deletions of these files appear to be contrary to policy, as the files have been on Commons for several years and were in use when deleted. .     Jim . . . . OTRS waiting list and 1-2 other issues

I have heard that OTRS can have a waiting list of up to 75 days in some cases. (I hope I was not misinformed.) If this is true, then its no wonder that people are puzzled when they send permission for a picture...and it still gets deleted perhaps by you or another Admin.

As for this image you uploaded, since you gave no description, I managed to give a description--this time--since it is a holiday. Without a description, most people don't know when this object dates to, just the name of the owner. I also named the owner in the category you gave for this tomb.

PS: Most of these ddenisen flickr images have the right category but this image is missing a certain category, I think:

Luckily all these images were taken at the king tut exhibit at the Pacific Science Centre in Seattle in 2012 as this notice states the end of the exhibit by the Pacific Science Centre of Seattle. Flickr here has 1000+ images from this exhibit but very few images were licensed freely like those from ddenisen's account. Normally these objects would be in the Cairo Museum where photos are all prohibited since mid-2005. Ddenisen gives good descriptions for his photos usually but I did not upload most of them. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 00:13, 31 March 2013 (UTC)

 •  Comment: This is the only other photo from flickr that I uploaded which was not from ddenisen's flickr account...and even the photo of the mask is affected by the bright museum lights:
 • File:Funerary mask of Psusennes I (2012).jpg

The other images by this other user (geraldford) are partly out of focus...which is not a surprise since I too have difficulty sometimes taking good pictures in a dark or brightly lit museum in Canada where I live. The only image that might be worth uploading--if you wish--is this One I did not upload it because I like ddenisen's images which have clearer descriptions....but the resolution is high. Best Wishes, --Leoboudv (talk) 01:23, 31 March 2013 (UTC)

Since two days I'm working on the images: names descriptions, categories. I've made hundreds of edits in this area the last two days. But I can't do everything at once. I uploaded all images at once because of offering them to the egyptologist community at de:WP. Some images already get description from them. And all the other will get description in the next days. I've uploaded them not as a joke under a temporary name. But - do you really think, such a description helps the people? This says nothing, absolutely nothing about the object. You see a model of a boat. What helps to know biographical things of the owner of the tomb at this place? I'm happy if you would like to help with categorizing. But I would be more happy for some more substantial informations.
Practically I'm not an egyptologist - I've studied classical archaeology, so I've made the pictures in Boston (and Brooklyn) because I was there and upload them - but for a bigger engagement in the egyptologian area I've not the time and energy.
And I'm only working for the german language community for the OTRS. I'm not elected for Commons. -- Marcus Cyron (talk) 02:19, 31 March 2013 (UTC)
 • Dear Marcus Cyron,

Thank you for your reply. My reply was not a criticism--more like a comment that it helps to give an image some context to a reader who doesn't know the topic if you give a brief career of the owner the tomb as I tried to do. I, too, am not an Egyptologist though I have an interest in Egyptology from my days at University in Canada. And yes, I saw your large and impressive number of image uploads from Boston and Brooklyn. Unfortunately, there is no Egyptian art in Vancouver where I am as you can see on my userpage. As for this rare freely licensed Image, if you wish to upload it to commons from flickr, please feel free to do so. I have not uploaded it--but I let you upload it if you think the image quality is worth your while. Please have a happy Easter in Germany or Austria. I will not disturb you again. Best Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 03:34, 31 March 2013 (UTC)

OTRS waiting list and 1-2 other issues

My comments were just comments that adding a brief description helps. (That was why I added a brief description...since I was free that day) I am not an Egyptologist and I have a busy job in real life, too. I just have some interest in Ancient Egypt but that is not my job. I mostly mark images on Commons which was how I accidentally saw your images. I don't know if I can participate in a Wikimedia Egyptological community as I am on the EEF forum. I quit the Yahoo Ancient World News Forum 1 year ago as I lack time to participate in more than 1 forum with my job. Kind Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 22:12, 20 April 2013 (UTC)

Riesengroße Sammelkategorien

Hallo Marcus,

--Falk2 (talk) 04:04, 24 May 2013 (UTC)

Marcus Cyron (talk) 08:34, 24 May 2013 (UTC)
Du hast (vermutlich) die Seiten User:Marcus Cyron/OgreBotArchaeology/2013 May 21-31 und User:Marcus Cyron/OgreBotClassics/2013 May 21-31 angelegt, oder Dein Bot ist durchgegangen und hat es ohne Dich getan. --Falk2 (talk) 09:40, 24 May 2013 (UTC)
Marcus Cyron (talk) 10:35, 24 May 2013 (UTC)
Betroffene Datei
Marcus Cyron (talk) 00:21, 2 June 2013 (UTC)

OgreBot's page collections are a right nuisance

I am not certain what is happening with OgreBot, however, its collections are problematic.

 1. Something like File:Jarkko_Nieminen_-_Roland-Garros_2013_-_001.jpg does seem right to be be collected into three categories like archaeology, ceramics and classics, and I actually doubt that it should be collected into much at all by a bot for display at a page.
 2. By golly those pages that it builds are so bloody big!!! Trying to run a rename is slowed down by the beastly size, and looking at the category is a worse mistake as it comes close to killing my browser, at least slows it down for many minutes.

If you could look at and resolve this matter it would be great, as it is problematic for my admin work. Thanks.  — billinghurst sDrewth 13:42, 2 June 2013 (UTC)

The problem lies in the fact that OgreBot is including every subcategory of Category:Ceramics... which it just so happens is almost every category on Commons (it has to do with the category tree... it's complicated). I meant to disable these categories while I do research into why this is happening, but apparently I failed. I will blank these pages while I continue to do the research. Sorry about that! Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 15:45, 2 June 2013 (UTC)
It seems, the idea is good, but it does not work in "myy" categories. So we better should stop here. The more, the Cat-system is actually that bad. Marcus Cyron (talk) 19:43, 2 June 2013 (UTC)
Appreciate the clean-up, thanks for the quick attention.  — billinghurst sDrewth 11:00, 3 June 2013 (UTC)
File:Wikimedia Chapters Meeting 2012 062.JPG has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not.

Thank you!

Kuriermeinung

If you don't mind, I will post the following at Commons:Checkusers/Requests/INeverCry in 22 hours:

* User:Marcus Cyron wrote the following at :de:Wikipedia:Kurier (the de-Wikipedia equivalent for the Sign Post). I think everyone here, and especially the candidate has a right to know what he wrote there, thereof, here is a rough (and possibly not always correct) translation which Marcus is welcome to improve it:
** Currently there is a Checkuser-election at Commons. It is arguable whether the writer of these lines is right with his demand keeping the number of people who have access to these sensitive right low. He is more interested or even alarmed by the statistics of the eight checkusers at Wikimedia Commons during the past year: About 8.500 check user actions were performed. Half of them during the last half year. Especially two collaborators — of which one just threw in the towel (retired) — excelled with a four digits number of actions, each. And it doesn't grasp to the author [of these lines] how such a thing could happen. Are there really so many violations that have to be treated with a CU (where there is hardly a Community with “socking”) – or are the buttons carelessly used? And how can we then complain about spying by ACTA, SOPA, PIPA and PRISM, if we ourself created such a surveillance structure in our project. A comment by M.C. //
* Note that the checkuser policy at de.wp is stricter. I just found it awkward posting something to a broad public before even waiting for a response. -- ~~~~

-- Rillke(q?) 22:02, 16 June 2013 (UTC)

You don't have to ask, I wrote it in a public space. And you don't have to tell me that the policy at de:WP is strincter, I know that. But here it's not only not strict. It's dangerous often used. Marcus Cyron (talk) 09:28, 17 June 2013 (UTC)
Right... I post something on your talk and I see the comment of Rillke. :/ You clearly don't trust me of handling the tools correctly otherwise you wouldn't complain about it. As I said, 90% of the time I use them to check spambots and attack accounts. It's pure vandal fighting. Commons is just attacked by many spambots and vandals. I've never checked a regular editor. And there must be a very valid reason for me if I would ever do that. Besides, why is it important to complain about me (or my CU work) on another project (dewiki) where I'm not even an active contributor? I'm disappointed in you. You could've asked me to explain the amount of of CUs or whatever instead of making your own conclusions. Trijnsteltalk 12:29, 17 June 2013 (UTC)

Don't worry

I never check normal editors. There must be a very valid reason to do so & I never came across one. It's mostly a help for vandal fighting. Trijnsteltalk 12:19, 17 June 2013 (UTC)

Don't get me wrong - it's not Mistrust. But I have an other opinion depending CUs. Marcus Cyron (talk) 23:55, 17 June 2013 (UTC)
I have to correct myself. Now I can't don't trust you longer. People who like better applause than critics is one thing - but to accept Nazi comparisons to feel better, is not trustworthy as Checkuser or Administrator. Marcus Cyron (talk) 00:27, 18 June 2013 (UTC)
There was no “Nazi comparison”. If you are unable to understand what Túrelio wrote, you should not comment about it. Túrelio just mentioned that this phrase was also used them. -- Rillke(q?) 17:38, 20 June 2013 (UTC)

sorry

Hallo Marcus,

OgreBot categories

Hello Marcus,

I was able to trim down the ceramics category so that the bot can run it on your category. However, the archaeology and the classics categories were simply too broad, as they both have almost every ancient civilization under them, and the ancient civilizations have the modern equivalents, which themselves contain almost every category on Commons. If you wanted to narrow down the categories, we can look into adding them again. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 04:57, 19 July 2013 (UTC)

Die Begründung lautete: Copyvio - how should be the Author and the Photographer of the Newspaper texts and the photo be dead for more than 70 years, if the Newspaper was released in 1953? Definetly a Copyvio.} -- Rillke(q?) 11:33, 19 July 2013 (UTC)
Marcus Cyron (talk) 20:34, 19 July 2013 (UTC)

I really did not regard my edits to that file as radical or extreme cropping, since there remained a margin of at least 50 pixels on all four sides. Not sure what the advantages of margins much greater than 50 pixels is.... AnonMoos (talk) 03:54, 10 August 2013 (UTC)

Why you can't give an Object some room? You press an object into much more shorter borders than nessesary. Marcus Cyron (talk) 07:09, 10 August 2013 (UTC)
I really don't know what the purpose of "room" too much greater than 50 pixels is in most cases, and the example of "File:Miyasaka Hakuryu II - Tigress with Two Cubs - Walters 71909.jpg" at Commons:Overwriting existing files#Substantial crop or un-crop more or less supports my position... Wiederherstellung Wappen Schlins

Hallo Marcus,

Lg, Plani (talk) 08:55, 5 September 2013 (UTC)

Copyright

What is a copyright violation. How do you know what is and whats not.Johnericlee (talk) 13:02, 7 September 2013 (UTC)

I know it - but it seems you don't. You uploaded copyrighted material (so what I nominated for deletion an image of marvel figures used by Disney!) as your own (!!!) work. This is a copyright violation, because you used copyrighted material and it is a betrayal, because you say you've done something, you don't have. And if we see you diong this again, we have to block you here on Commons. Marcus Cyron (talk) 13:09, 7 September 2013 (UTC)

File:Carl Wilhelm Ludwig Müller.jpg

Hi Marcus, I did ask for deletion this file, cause is a duplicate with bad name. It already exist with good name (Carl Wilhelm Friedrich Ludwig). Anyway, I do not now any picture of Karl Müller. The raison of this misunderstand is probably that. Best regards. Piero (talk) 06:52, 15 September 2013 (UTC)

What we're talking about? Sorry, I can't remeber. Btw - your link shows 4 images, but 3 different persons. The last one for example is Karl Otfried Müller. Marcus Cyron (talk) 12:29, 15 September 2013 (UTC)

Multiple deletion of Galaxy images, G Pad, and Optimus Pad

Hi Marcus Cyron, I know your just doing your job to clean up wikimedia but may I ask what is wrong with my upload regarding Galaxy Note and Tab devices, G Pad, and Optimus Pad device? I have followed all the guidelines in uploading flickr images on commons. User:TheMostAmazingTechnik is sabotaging my images description and licensing. Moderators like User:Fastily and Flickrbot found my images to be licensed properly and Fastily even undeleted all of them due to being properly tagged and licensed. If ORTS is the reason, I mailed them before and accepted it but for it to be clear I mailed them again the consent I got from the original uploaders respectively. Thanks! Jeromesandilanico (talk) 16:19, 16 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi. The problem is, that not all images who has free licence tags at flickr are really free (by far not). And here it's hard to belive, that the Uploader at flickr could give them free. In my eyes it wasn't your fault - but until we get a OTRS ticket that the images really "clean", it's better to delete them. If we get a positive answer, I will restore them as fast as it is possible. But we should getting the safe way here. Marcus Cyron (talk) 16:26, 16 September 2013 (UTC)
But another administrator via User:Fastily accepted it as it was licensed in flickr under Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 Generic. Also please look at the angle that User:TheMostAmazingTechnik did these by personal attacks. Jeromesandilanico (talk) 16:34, 16 September 2013 (UTC)
It seems he not really accepted it, because the "Speedy Deletion" were still in the files. And depending flickr I already said, what I think is to say. Marcus Cyron (talk) 16:56, 16 September 2013 (UTC)
Actually he accepted it, its only User:TheMostAmazingTechnik who again putted it on the files, I even contested it on the talk pages as per instruction. And by the way isnt it that I could put an "OTRS pending" tag for the mean time while we both wait for the OTRS ticket?Jeromesandilanico (talk) 17:09, 16 September 2013 (UTC)

Ugryz (talk) 17:45, 16 September 2013 (UTC)
Marcus Cyron (talk) 18:16, 16 September 2013 (UTC)

Jorge Royan's pictures

Hello.

I see you tagged one of Jorge Royan's pictures as copyvio. Jorge's account is authentic and he holds the copyright of every single image he has uploaded. You will also be able to check that all the images he uploads have full EXIF info and most of them in full resolution. If you find his pictures published elsewhere either they were copied from Commons or from his personal web site.

Best, Barcex (talk) 17:35, 16 September 2013 (UTC)

You're right, sorry. This really was a mistake. Marcus Cyron (talk) 17:42, 16 September 2013 (UTC)

Porcelaine

Hi Marcus! I always put as many infos as I can in the filenames (you can easily translate it to any language with online tools). But unfortunately the captaions of the museums are sometimes very poor. It's not because I am dumb or lazy. In this is a case all it says is: "Vienna 1785-1786"... I know it is sad. I guessed it is Apollo because it has the Lira and the fleeces at his feet. Who made it? I don't know. Do not complain to me but to the museum! At least I just uploaded many new pictures of Manifactures which had almost any before, like Fulda, Würtzburg, Paris, Worcester and many more... if we had more images to compare it could be easier to guess the missing infos. --Sailko (talk) 11:17, 20 September 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the Infos (I don't think you're dumb ;)) - it's sad, when museums give not enough informations. Marcus Cyron (talk) 11:23, 20 September 2013 (UTC)

Pictures

Never claimed as any of these photo as my own work. These photos are there only for educational proposes and are taken by Veria F.C. website who allows the useage from the public. As long as the people being in photo ain't disturbed by this action either, and as far as they are used by multiple websites all over the Greek sport portal, I can't see where's the problem Regards.

Hi - where the problem is? You can't take pictures other people take - this is simply stealing. The Website of Veria claims the copyright for what's on the site. And Wikipedia is not a "multiple website". We honour the Copyrights of other persons. Simply: you can not go somewhere and take the images from there. Only if this isn allowed. And for Wikimedia Commons this is only possible with a free license. Marcus Cyron (talk) 11:41, 20 September 2013 (UTC)

Heya Marcus, this is a project that me and Fae are working on, which will involve probably 150,000+ images. Luckily many of the images are automatically categorised by registration, but there are a lot of other categories to be added and this can only be done manually, and I and many other editors are diligently working on this. I would be happy if this would be so - but I can't find it. Could you please give an Information about that in the description of the picture? Then I think everything will work fine. Marcus Cyron (talk) 11:51, 24 September 2013 (UTC)

Nice images, but I'm afraid that Turkey isn't part of Wiki Loves Monuments 2013 so this category will probably deleted soon. Multichill (talk) 20:13, 27 September 2013 (UTC)

Why? Isn't the important thing to get the images? In my opinion only this is of importance. It's not important who does this. And from where. So why it is imortant who gives the start für Turkey? Marcus Cyron (talk) 20:31, 27 September 2013 (UTC)
Mea culpa. --PigeonIP (talk) 19:17, 28 September 2013 (UTC)

Why are these images being flagged? I understand that I have not provided direct references in the page, however I'm doing this work for the label, Sugar Hill. Do I need to provide you with a reference to the label website or for the photographer who took the picture? Sugar Hill has all the rights for these pictures...thanks in advance.

Please send a message that you have the permission to upload the images from the copyright holder to permissions-commons-at-wikimedia.org - it's the only way we can really see, that you are allowed to do this. Marcus Cyron (talk) 17:05, 18 October 2013 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Monuments Italia

--Nemo 09:02, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

Hello. When you follow your link you can see, that the image is NOT under a PD-license. It's a CC-license. But not uder a CC-by-sa or a CC-0-license, as Commons it accept, no, it's a CC-nc-License. NC for Noncomercial. Sadly we can not accept such licenses. And PD-1923... - sorry, but I don't belive, that the image is so old. But also if I would belive it, without a date of creation, publishing or Vita-dates of the painter - how I could? Copyright is a really importand thing, we must du everything here as correct as we can. Not only because Mistakes could be expensive, also because we would do a lot of copyright violations up to possible stealing other peoples work. Marcus Cyron (talk) 22:30, 16 October 2013 (UTC)

Daniel S. Sullivan photo

I uploaded a photo to Creative Commons for the Daniel S. Sullivan article that was sent to me by the subject himself. The image is marked with the CC0 1.0 public license. You flagged the image for deletion and have not clearly explained why on the image comments page. Please remove the flag and let us go on to continuing to improve Wikipedia, not making it harder and more frustrating to use.

Danke Schön Timtempleton (talk) 16:07, 18 October 2013 (UTC)

Sorry - but it don't work this way. Only because he gave this picture to you (and we must trust you, because there's no proof!) it doesn't mean, that he can give it away. Who was the photographer? Did he say yes to a free use? If you have permissions, you should send them to the support team. Copyright issues are much too important than to take the things easy. We have to use the project rules. We must do that! Marcus Cyron (talk) 16:37, 18 October 2013 (UTC)
Based on the specific usage of the photo, as part of an existing Wikipedia article about a public figure, your volunteer efforts in this case are not aligned with the mission of the Wikipedia community. You need to consider what you are doing in the correct context. In the United States, a personal photo taken of oneself can be used in any way by the subject, without seeking any permission from the photographer. If this image is not correct, and not approved by the subject, don't you think the subject would immediately address and flag it him/herself? Monitoring and flagging public figure photos used on personal sites isn't a good use of your valuable time. In any case, I have gone back to the subject and will find out who took the photo, if it was indeed a professional, or just an acquaintance, and will get some sort of release note from that person. And in the future, rather than immediately marking every image for deletion, think about the context. If you still have valid concerns, please try a more measured approach. You can outline your concerns about the copyright, and give the poster a chance to address those concerns in a civil fashion.

Timtempleton (talk) 20:48, 18 October 2013 (UTC)

In all Wikimedia projects the authors and photographers have to follow the rules! And the Copyright is one of the main pillars of the project. Even you have to accept it and to follow the rules. Goal for Wikimedia is to create FREE projects. Free means FREE for every usage by following the Rules, Rules as the Licenses. We don't need to discuss this more here. You are simply wrong. Hey,

User:Montehurd is a WMF member of staff who mis-directed the Commons app he was developing to Commons (rather than a test site) during testing. I'm sorry that this wasn't flagged up yesterday. I don't think it's appropriate to block him at all, let alone indefinitely, so I will unblock him; hope that this is OK.

Unsinn. Dieses Abzeichen ist öffentlich! mfg Zeitblick

Unsinn. Marcus Cyron (talk) 14:05, 26 October 2013 (UTC)

Unsinn! Die Feuerwehr eine Körperschaft öffentlichen Rechts! Bitte alle Löschanträge Rückgangig machen. mfg Zeitblick

Das ist irrelevant. Solche Bilder sind Verletzungen des Urheberrechts. Die Löschanträge bleiben. Marcus Cyron (talk) 14:12, 26 October 2013 (UTC)

Thera and Ancient Thera

Hi. It is very probable that the jug comes from the island of Thera (aka Santorini), not from the ancient city of Thera, wich was founded around -900, centuries after. The description here (N°1 p 44) even states it comes reportedly from Thera : it means that it was not found during regular excavations and that it is thought to come from Santorini/Thera but the precise location is not known.--Phso2 (talk) 13:56, 6 November 2013 (UTC)

So why you delete the category instead then correct them? Marcus Cyron (talk) 14:41, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
because i am not perfect, because i was too quick on the button...There was also no precise category for it... By the way, I guess there is a problem with this serie for the Mycenean artifacts under "Mycenaean pottery in the United States". And thanks for uploading the pictures and having carefully added the items descriptions.--Phso2 (talk) 16:04, 6 November 2013 (UTC)

file Aco Šopov Anthologie.jpg

Hi Marcus Cyron, I've just sent a request fos undelition of the file Aco Šopov Anthologie.jpg which is my own work. It is the cover of my father's book "Anthologie personnelle" published in 1994 by UNESCO in the collection "Collection UNESCO d'oeuvres représentatives" and co-edited by Actes Sud. I took the picture of the cover that I put on Wiki Commons.

Here is the detail of the rights printed in the book: (c) Jasmina Šopova et Vladimir Šopov /myself and my late brother/ (c) Ante Popovski, 1994, pour l'introduction (c) Actes Sud, 1994, pour la postface (c) UNESCO, 1994, pour la traduction française ISBN Actes Sud 2-7427-0203-2 ISBN Unesco 92-3-202964-2. Illustration de couverture: Portrait d'Aco Šopov par Dimitar Kondovski Collection particulière /my own collection/ (Tous droits réservés)

According to the publishers, the cover of the book can be freely reproduced. The book is out of print. Please let me know if you need more information in order to allow the undeletion of the file file Aco Šopov Anthologie.jpg Thanking you in advance, Jasmina Šopova --Јасмина Шопова (talk) 13:05, 10 November 2013 (UTC)

Yes, the containers used for eating and drinking, tableware, earthenware, etc. --JMCC1 (talk) 05:45, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
Yes, but is the classification of the museum LACMA. See [8] [9] etc.

--JMCC1 (talk) 12:23, 13 November 2013 (UTC)

I'm curious why you restored this file while there is an open UnDR? The book cover contains an image that is very likely under copyright -- while it may have been licensed for the book cover, it probably was not licensed for more general use. The image is by Dimitar Kondovski who died in 1993. .     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 22:30, 11 November 2013 (UTC)

I said, why I've done it. But I did not realized, that there was an UnDR. Marcus Cyron (talk) 22:50, 11 November 2013 (UTC)
Aha -- now I see it above. Why don't you comment at the UnDR? Thanks, .     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 23:00, 11 November 2013 (UTC)

Bitte unterlasse dieses POV-pushing. Danke. --Denniss (talk) 23:01, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

Marcus Cyron (talk) 17:23, 13 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi Marcus, what is the story behind this deletion? Regards, --SJ+ 17:54, 11 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi. The Cause that was given at the speedy deletion request was: http://chandra.harvard.edu/photo/image_use.html states only non commercial, John P. Hughes is not a member of NASA. Free are the Images as long the NASA publish their own material. But here it isn't the NASA and the original copyright holder says: NC. Marcus Cyron (talk) 18:11, 11 November 2013 (UTC)
Ah, thank you. (I wish deletion didn't hide the revisions; this is a useful record to preserve.)
The specifics of that request are wrong: John P. Hughes (one of the scientists who was a PI on the NASA telescope work) does not have copyright on the image. Also, the NC license in the Chandra website (which you link to) is a catch-all that covers any image found on the site that is not otherwise licensed; the all-NASA images there are still PD. (I checked with a staffmember who runs the site)
The actual copyright status of this image is tricky, since it is a composite of 3 wavelengths from 3-4 institutions; it is likely that not all of the non-NASA institutions (NRAO, NOAO, DSS and possibly Middlebury College) have released copyright - worth asking them. But it seems to me that a regular deletion discussion may be worthwhile, if only to clear up the discussion at Category_talk:Chandra_images. --SJ+ 11:52, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
OK, I trust you ;) - I've restored the image. Marcus Cyron (talk) 12:06, 15 November 2013 (UTC)

Evelyn Matthei

I don't actually understand your rationale for nominating Matthei's pictures, but I will explain it all on your 15 (!) nominations. Evelyn Matthei's website is licensed under the license CC-BY-3.0-CL (it clearly shows this. Secondly: the pictures can all be found at a relative location, which I will point in every single nomination. I recommend you withdraw all your nominations. küñall (nütramyen) 13:17, 15 November 2013 (UTC)

Her Website looks like a point were simply Photos were put under a free license. It's not clear, that the photographers really give the images free. And - all the images were uploades as work by Evelyn Matthei - that's simply a lie. She's to see on the images, some of them look very official. She isn't the photographer. So it's hard to trust every information there. And some of the Images are worked over - but you will not tell me by Evelyn Matthei. Too much problems, too much unbeleavable things here. Marcus Cyron (talk) 16:16, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
She might not be the author of the photographs, granted. But it's pretty clear the content is released (most likely by her campaign team, otherwise the Independent Democrat Union party) under the terms of the CC-BY-3.0-CL. We might never know who actually took the photos, but the copyright holder clearly is the political coalition behind the website (Alianza). As I said, it's pretty clear she is not the author, but might be the copyright holder, and so the website www.evelynmatthei.cl is properly attributed. küñall (nütramyen) 17:25, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
For me this is not clear. Because of this there's now a discussion. We will see, what other people think. Marcus Cyron (talk) 18:21, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
Why? The images and content are clearly CC-BY... küñall (nütramyen) 21:32, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
We end the discussion here. It seems you don't want to understand, where the problems are. Marcus Cyron (talk) 21:33, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
I'm not looking for trouble, but... your rationale is vague. I'll let the nominations continue its route if you don't want more discussion. Regards. küñall (nütramyen) 21:36, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
I don't beive, that Matthei relly have the right to give the images free under a free license. Point. You see it different. This is OK. Now other people should decide, if you or me is correct. When I'm not right - fine! I'm happy about every image more we can use. But Copyvios could cause big problems, so we must look at every image. Marcus Cyron (talk) 21:40, 15 November 2013 (UTC)

A Blast Beat

Hello Marcus. I only waited for the selection. I have full permission from Mattias Kolstrup, and brother Jeppe, lead singer of the band, which is also my friend. - Otherwise I would have never uploaded a picture. Best regards / Lars (Pixi Uno)

OK, I trust you ;). I changed to the "Missing permission" template. When you have the permission, you can delete it. :) Marcus Cyron (talk) 01:51, 16 November 2013 (UTC)
I will hopefully not send mails to all files in the category. - Mattias has just churning of a good heart, because he knows that I am an administrator on the Danish Wikipedia. - And the band owns all rights on their cover art. --Pixi Uno (talk) 01:56, 16 November 2013 (UTC)

I give the image in your hands. ;) Marcus Cyron (talk) 02:13, 16 November 2013 (UTC)

Lygaeus equestris/simulans

Concerning this edit commented as "discussion with open end". Where is the discussion? I don't see it. It is simply incorrect to name (or categorize) all these photos as Lygaeus equestris:

 • a reliable ID is not possible from these images
 • usually no location is given and if it were given in many regions both species occur sympatric and for other regions presence of both species is simply not investigated with enough depth since simulans was described, so location is not a viable help for ID anyway.

Cheers, Pudding4brains (talk) 17:57, 19 November 2013 (UTC)

Take a look on the discussion page. For a normal user it's not to understand, what actually is correct, what not. The discussion died. But the template was long enough in the Category. When there's a descission, a new request can be startet. Marcus Cyron (talk) 18:11, 19 November 2013 (UTC)

Schiphol

Hello, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is situated in Schiphol, a district of Haarlemmermeer. What about splitting Category:Schiphol in a Category:Schiphol (neigbourhood) and a Category:Schiphol (airport), this latter redirecting towards Category:Amsterdam Airport Schiphol ? --Havang(nl) (talk) 09:28, 19 November 2013 (UTC)

Yes - do it! :) You are the expert, so it seems :) Marcus Cyron (talk) 11:59, 19 November 2013 (UTC)
I am not that expert. Amsterdam airport Schiphol itself is in Schiphol Centrum; there is also Schiphol-Rijk (and Business Park Schiphol-Rijk), Schiphol-Zuid-Oost, Schiphol-Oost. It is said that: <<Schiphol-Zuid-Oost, Schiphol-Oost and the industrial park of Schiphol-Rijk is part of the main distribution area for the Schiphol Airport>>, so they are directly related to the airport anyhow. I made a gallery, somewhat arbitrary.

What do you think about these? By the way, Category:Amsterdam Airport Schiphol could be subcategory of Category:Schiphol (neighborhood). Or is all this too complicated to be practical? --Havang(nl) (talk) 16:22, 19 November 2013 (UTC) --Havang(nl) (talk) 16:22, 19 November 2013 (UTC)

I don't think, that it's too complicated - but someone has to do it ;). And I am not a specialist in dutch topography. I only had worked in the Category:Requested moves, because there's a baglog of in parts to summer 2012. Marcus Cyron (talk) 17:33, 19 November 2013 (UTC)

Google Art Project works

Hi, you were correct in marking for deletion works such as File:Unknown Greek - Female Head Oinochoe - Google Art Project.jpg. These were misidentified as paintings due to the core:type metadata (this issue is now fixed). However, you should not delete works such as File:Unknown Scottish - Portrait of a Brother and Sister - Google Art Project.jpg which depict 2D paintings surrounded by a 3D frame. These should be marked with Non-free frame so that they can be edited to remove the frame. For an example of how non-free frames are removed from images, see one I removed at File:Unknown American - Mrs. Sam Houston - Google Art Project.jpg (one of the images you marked). Thank you.

Marcus Cyron (talk) 15:35, 25 November 2013 (UTC)

Clean up required

I think that I will leave File:Flag_of_Iraq_(1963-1991);_Flag_of_Syria_(1963-1972).svg.svg cleanup to you. It is my opinion that the rename of flags like this one is not a good idea. They are a PITA due to how the templates are used at the WPs plus while they look the same I think that separate naming is a better way to manage these issues, especially with like flags that have different derivation.  — billinghurst sDrewth 22:26, 27 November 2013 (UTC)

I don't understand what you try to say to me. Marcus Cyron (talk) 10:26, 28 November 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for redirecting

Thanks for moving File:Le opere di Galileo Galilei XV.djvu to itas new name. At beginning I've been confused from the existence of a redirect: I didn't know that it was possible! Is it something new? Or did I simply ignore this possibility? --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 13:10, 28 November 2013 (UTC)

I fixed all references to File:Le opere di Galileo Galilei XV.djvu, pointing them into File:Opere complete di Galileo Galilei XV.djvu; can you delete the redirect page? It could be confusing into itsource. Thanks!--Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 19:00, 28 November 2013 (UTC)
Can't be a new evention, as far as I remeber, redirects were earlier than moving. And the redirects always comes automatic, when you move an image that's used. Deletion is ofcourse possible. Marcus Cyron (talk) 22:20, 28 November 2013 (UTC)
File:Antique body board.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not.

Thank you!

Help with all the move requests for the sword photos

I greatly appreciate the moves you have completed on all the sword photos. As there are some that are almost identical, I will only request moves for one example of each general view of this sword. Wpollard (talk) 13:19, 29 November 2013 (UTC)

Hallo Marcus.

Aber was solls .... --slg (talk) 17:35, 2 December 2013 (UTC)

Marcus Cyron (talk) 19:54, 2 December 2013 (UTC)
--slg (talk) 21:17, 2 December 2013 (UTC)
Soll an mir nicht scheitern. Marcus Cyron (talk) 21:35, 2 December 2013 (UTC)

Photos that are almost identical of the Arn Limited Edition movie sword

As you know, this sword has files with photos that are either identical or almost identical views of this sword. If I knew how to nominate the duplicates for deletion, I would do so. I probably would get some very negative comments, but we are trying to make the Wikimedia system better, not waste space with almost identical images. If you would tell me how to nominate these images, I would do so. I work mostly in English Wikipedia and am very familiar with setting up deletion nominations there. Lately, however, I have spent some time in Commons. Thanks again for your file moves based on my requests. Wpollard (talk) 13:18, 2 December 2013 (UTC)

Tell the file names here to me - the ones you want to delete and the ones you want not to delete. Marcus Cyron (talk) 13:27, 2 December 2013 (UTC)
As I said, some photos are almost duplicates of others that provide no additional information.
The files to keep are:
 • File:The Arn Limited Edition Offical Movie Sword (6103678070).jpg
 • File:The Arn Limited Edition Offical Movie Sword (6103119479).jpg
 • File:The Arn Limited Edition Offical Movie Sword (6103123087).jpg
 • File:The Arn Limited Edition Offical Movie Sword (6103657404).jpg
The files that I think are duplicates and can be deleted are:
 • File:The Arn Limited Edtion Offical Movie Sword (6103678162).jpg
 • File:The Arn Limited Edtion Offical Movie Sword (6103113411).jpg
 • File:The Arn Limited Edtion Offical Movie Sword (6103116407).jpg
 • File:The Arn Limited Edtion Offical Movie Sword (6103126147).jpg
If these are nominated for deletion, I will write I think these are duplicates that are not needed. Thank you for your help and time. Wpollard (talk) 02:07, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

Photo wrongly deleted

File:Alopekis dogs working with sheep.jpg The file was wrongly deleted. The photo is included in the article of the Greek wiki that I authored https://el.wikipedia.org/wiki/%CE%91%CF%81%CF%87%CE%B5%CE%AF%CE%BF:%CE%A0%CE%BF%CE%B9%CE%BC%CE%B5%CE%BD%CE%B9%CE%BA%CE%AD%CF%82_%CE%91%CE%BB%CF%89%CF%80%CE%B5%CE%BA%CE%AF%CE%B4%CE%B5%CF%82_1960.jpg and carries a FREE licence. (see the licence in Greek wiki under the photo) The file was wrongly deleted. I am the author of both articles and legal user of the photo I wish the photo re-instated. I filed an undelete request. Thank you Fainomenon (talk) 19:16, 2 December 2013 (UTC)

Sorry, but why exactly you think you are allowed to use an image from 1960 with unknown photographer? Marcus Cyron (talk) 19:52, 2 December 2013 (UTC)
Because the file belongs to the archive of Amaltheia Society for the Preservation of Hellenic Native Breeds, of which I am a member, and I was given specific permission (copyright) by the Society to use it in the creation of articles about the breed in the English and other wikis and other media.
And why these information was not to find in the article? And why there's not an permission send to the Support team? How we should know, that this is correct what you say? There were so much people who told us a lot. We need at least some written words to the support team, so we can use an OTRS number. We talking about copyrights - they are often very problematic (and at the end this could become expensive), we must take this serious. Marcus Cyron (talk) 14:35, 3 December 2013 (UTC)
I am sorry. I am a new user and not very familiar with all the instructions yet.I did not see how I could have attached all this info to the file in the first place. I thought I selected the correct options for the file but that's obviously not the case. I am learning the wikimedia commons instructions as I go along, I find them very complicated and I am not an experienced user yet; I will e-mail OTRS with all the relevant information; I was astonished by the fact the file was deleted here despite the fact it is published in the Greek wiki with a free licence, and the information I supplied here about the source. Amaltheia Society's site is down at present otherwise I would have included it in the information. I am waiting for an e-mail message from the HQ of the Society before I proceed to write to the OTRS. I thought I had seven days' time to do that.Fainomenon (talk) 19:31, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

Marcus Cyron (talk) 19:55, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

A little problem with rename

Thanks for having renamed this file; unfortunately I made a small mistake: the correct name should be Spiraea × vanhouttei3.jpg (an additional a between r and e). Could you please fix it? Thanks again.--Carnby (talk) 22:26, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the rename; but you forgot to rename the FPC page to Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Caesio teres in Fiji by Nick Hobgood.jpg. JKadavoor Jee 17:46, 7 December 2013 (UTC)

This should have be renamed automaticly. Strange. On the other hand - when you see this, you can to it. You don't need special rights to rename it on this place ;). Marcus Cyron (talk) 17:59, 7 December 2013 (UTC)
No it is a separate file; and I have no file mover right. So I restored the old file name at Commons:Featured picture candidates/candidate list to avoid affecting the nomination. It may a bit complicated for you to understand. On the other side, give the the file mover right, I can do it without disturbing you. :) JKadavoor Jee 05:23, 8 December 2013 (UTC)
Got it; thanks. JKadavoor Jee 10:33, 8 December 2013 (UTC)

ICDD at Gate to the Unknown 2012 photo deletion

I understand that the image is copyrighted. However, Hull specifically stated to me that he doesn't care that I use the picture for Wikipedia. If I mislabeled something when I uploaded the image, I apologize. Is there any way to correct the license on the upload form after the uploading? Since Vaguedge's website's contact page is broken (403 Forbidden), the only way I know to contact Hull is via Twitter, also linked on his website. Thank you for your understanding. Ruukasu2005 (talk) 20:47, 7 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi. The problem is, that our images need a free license. That means, they have to be free for every use - not only for Wikipedia. If Hull says yes, that would be fine. Then would be the best way, he writes a mail to the OTRS. Then we can write it at the image site. Marcus Cyron (talk) 21:46, 7 December 2013 (UTC)
Fair enough. Anyway, Hull's Twitter page is halcaitk. I also notified him about his site's broken mail form, so things should be easier to contact him whenever it's fixed. Thanks. Ruukasu2005 (talk) 11:30, 8 December 2013 (UTC)
Just an update: I received a reply from Hull. He said that he can't permit formally because he is not the photographer of the photo, so this may take some time. Ruukasu2005 (talk) 19:31, 8 December 2013 (UTC)
What we have is time :). And I know, copyright issues are difficult :( Marcus Cyron (talk) 19:40, 8 December 2013 (UTC)

Category talk:People by occupation by alphabet - Indeed "move mostly opposed"?

I'm sorry, but you're wrong in this funny "conclusion" and possibly have difficulty in either counting or reading through the discussion. There's one (1) single user opposing, and four (4) others fervantly supporting the elimination of that category, of whom three (3) advocate a merger with "People by occupation". The opposing user has "opposed" in more than one comment throughout the thread, therefore you may by perplexed. Please ask somebody else to review your decision (which is fantastically invalid given the overwhelming majority down there) if you don't have time to review it yourself. Thank you.
