Hello, Meganmccarty!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Removing Category[edit]

Hi Megan, this isn't meant to sound critical but can you tell me why you remove the Category:Lepidoptera from my (recently) uploaded images? Should I use the family name as a category? Just wonder what I should do to enable their use on WP:Lepidoptera. Aviceda (talk) 01:34, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

Rather than be general (i.e., Lepidoptera), it's better to be specific (i.e., scientific name - as you have it). When using the scientific name as the category, you don't need to use Lepidoptera. This makes it easier for people to locate your image. Hope this helps. Meganmccarty (talk) 19:28, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

Changing taxa of File:Danaus eresimus.JPG[edit]

Hello! When I identifed the butterfly on the picture mentioned above, I had access to more information than you had when changing the taxa. I chose the image from a series of pictures of the butterfly, taken at the same time on the same flower. Now I have uploaded the 3 better ones apart from the original one. Please have a look att the whole series of pictures before determining the taxa of the butterfly. Please note the very defined dark veins on the top of the forewing in File:Danaus_sp_Loxahatchee_4.JPG. Queens, as far as I know do not have very defined dark veins on top of the wings. File:Danaus_sp_Loxahatchee_3.JPG clearly show its a male. There are also the pale light but not white spots on the underside on the hindwing indicating it is a soldier. Please explain to me what submarginal spots mean and if you are talking about the upside or downside of the wing. --Korall (talk) 19:58, 20 September 2009 (UTC)

Colouring maps[edit]

I was wondering what software you used to colour the map:

I am planning to do one for the Painted Turtle article. Dger (talk) 03:24, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
