Images in Category:George S. Stuart Gallery of Historical Figures[edit]

Hi, I noticed that you have put up images from the George S. Stuart's Gallery of Historical Figures, a site you maintain, on Commons under the said category. You have licensed these images as Commons Creative 3.0. However, on your site, it is stated "Images © copyright 2006 Peter d'Aprix". The copyright of these photos taken by d'Aprix belongs to him. He has to be the one who releases the images as CC 3.0, not you. This can be rectified by having d'Aprix himself email Commons with express permission for those images per Commons:OTRS. Otherwise, Commons cannot in good faith host those images. Jappalang (talk) 10:52, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

I just realized Mr Stuart is still living, and this poses another conundrum. I have raised the issue for discussion and offered solutions at Commons:Village pump#Gallery of Historical Figures. Please take a look. Jappalang (talk) 22:55, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

I have requested the necessary e-mails from Mr. D'Aprix and Mr. Stuart. I have also requested agreement to change the copyright notice on the main website to be consistent with the Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike 3.0 license provisions. Mharrsch 06:04, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

U.S. Army Combat Art Program[edit]

Hi Mharrsch, is there any evidence/proof whether images such as File:VietnamCombatArtCAT01Blum1966GrenadeThrower.jpg or File:CAT01Blum02 elephantgrassLR.jpg are really free resp. PD-USGov as you have tagged them? Painting can hardly considered an official duty of a soldier. Also, the article where you put these images in, doesn't mention this aspect. --Túrelio (talk) 21:35, 11 March 2011 (UTC)

All of these paintings were produced by artists commissioned by the U.S. Army's official Vietnam Combat Art Program while the artists were serving as soldiers in the U.S. Army with their specific orders to produce images of the U.S. Army in the Vietnam field of operations. All of these images were provided to me specifically for use in Wikipedia by James Pollock, one of the soldier artists who assures me all of this art which was produced by order of the Army by soldiers selected for that purpose is definitely in the public domain and in the official collections of the U.S. Army. - Mharrsch (talk) 21:45, 11 March 2011 (UTC)

Ok, thank. What's really important is that it is/has to be PD (or any other free license). Any permission restricted to "for use in Wikipedia" is without any value here on Commons. --Túrelio (talk) 22:05, 11 March 2011 (UTC)

As a photographer myself and Wikipedia editor for a number of years, I am well aware of the license restrictions for images uploaded to Wikimedia Commons for use in Wikipedia articles. These images from the Vietnam Combat Artists Program produced under orders for the U.S. Army are definitely "public domain" as I have specified. - Mharrsch (talk) 15:24, 12 March 2011 (UTC)

Please avoid COM:OVERCAT[edit]

--Foroa (talk) 21:24, 4 April 2011 (UTC)

How can all of Mr. Pollock's images created while participating in the Vietnam Combat Artists Program show up under a linked badge displaying all media related to the Vietnam Combat Artists Program on Wikipedia if the Vietnam Combat Artists Program category is not included? Mharrsch 20:44, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

I did a check related to keywords you wanted to add. Using the keywords you wanted to add, you get exactly the category you wanted, no noise. Using the same without category, the same but under snowed by all sorts of noise.
Catscan can bring up all images in the category and its subcategories, so no need to have them in categories at several levels. --Foroa (talk) 07:50, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

Looking at CatScan, I see that all of the images produced by James Pollock (artist) are displayed, including his subsequent civilian artwork. How do we distinguish his work so only the military art displays for Vietnam Combat Artists Program and both military and civilian art displays under his name? Do we need to add new subcategories like Pollock civilian art and Pollock military art under his category James Pollock (artist)? Then do we need to change the subcategory under Vietnam Combat Artists Program from his name to his new Pollock military art subcategory?

Also, can I use the CatScan link as the badge link on Wikipedia? Mharrsch (talk) 22:50, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

The whole idea of categories is making groupings of pictures that contain a certain relationship as expressed by the category name. In your case, like someone made Category:Watercolor paintings by James Pollock (artist), one could make Category:Paintings of civilians in war by James Pollock (artist) and Category:Paintings of military in war by James Pollock (artist). The latter could added to the War in art category. From this example, it is clear that the more precise the category description is, the easier the people will understand and find the right categories.
I don't understand what you mean with "badge link". --Foroa (talk) 17:05, 5 May 2011 (UTC)

Hello, Mharrsch!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Denniss (talk) 05:13, 14 November 2011 (UTC)

David Fairrington was commissioned by ABC/Disney Company to paint the casts of a number of their television shows. According to copyright law, the copyright for a commissioned work remains with the artist as he was NOT an employee of ABC/Disney at the time the paintings were produced. Mr. Fairrington also assured me that he has model releases for all portraits that he has produced which would cover any state's privacy laws and the individuals portrayed in this painting are public celebrities anyway. As I am using this image to illustrate the Wikipedia page about Mr. Fairrington, a nationally recognized artist and former Vietnam combat artist, I would appreciate it if you would restore the files that you have removed. Thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2013! Please help with this survey.

Dear Mharrsch,
Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2013, and for sharing your pictures with the whole world! We would like to ask again a few minutes of your time.

Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 365,000 pictures of cultural heritage objects from more than 50 countries around the world, becoming the largest photography competition to have ever taken place.

You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet).

If you'd like to start editing relevant Wikipedia articles and share your knowledge with other people, please go to the Wikipedia Welcome page for more information, guidance, and help.

To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey. Please fill in this short survey in your own language, and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2013.

Kind regards,
the Wiki Loves Monuments team
