Hello - thank you for providing images to the wikimedia commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the commons should be useful to all users of wikimedia projects - this is possible only if the images can be found by other people. To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should either place the images on topic pages (galleries), or put the images directly into a category, or do both. Which of those possibilities is preferred is however a matter of debate, see here.
The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There is a large number of completely unsorted images on the commons right now, see Commons:Really unused. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do! Thank you. -- Duesentrieb 19:16, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Hi - thanks for your response. As I see, you also manages to put Image:Pelargon.jpg into Category:Flowers, so you seem to have got the technical part - good :D I have removed Category:Plant from Image:Pelargon.jpg, because it does not exist - the correct category would be Category:Plantae (scientific name), but that's much too unspecific. Also, the gallery Pelargonium x hortorum ist already in the taxonomic hierarchy, so that's ok.
Generally, start with the categories that are on the Main Page and move down until you find the gallery or category that best fits your image. Also note that categories usually have plural names - this is helpful for guessing existing categories and for creating new ones. Also, if an image can be classified according to different aspects, it should be in multiple categories - the categorisation should always answer the question "what?", but could for example also answer "where?".
So, thanks again for your contribution - have fun :D -- Duesentrieb 23:02, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Hi - backlings to images (and other pages) no not work across projects - you can only see where the image is used inside the commons. This is because each wiki has it's own database, and doesn't really know about other projects. All images here should be on a page or in a category on the commons, so they can be found by topic.
Please don't put individual images to generic categories such as Category:Plants of Europe. I think better to add there entire page/category dedicated to particular species. Generic categories could be easily to become overcrowded and useless to search if every single image will be located there.
Good idea to look into existing category scheme before inventing new one.

Tip: Categorizing images
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
- [[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
- [[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.
