Hello, Morray!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

IPTC info in photos[edit]

Hi. I just recently saw your post at the help desk about IPTC info in photographs. Support for extracting IPTC and XMP information is pretty much done (well common XMP info anyways; XMP can encode lots of rather obscure properties we wouldn't extract.). Support for doing this is in the 1.18 release of MediaWiki (This wiki is currently on 1.17 release). Next time the version of the MediaWiki software that commons runs is updated, XMP support should be present. (Hopefully anyways - that's assuming nothing goes wrong) A while back there was a projected date of doing that by August 31, but I'm not sure if that date got pushed back or not, or what really the state of 1.18 is.

For example in 1.18 mediawiki the data extracted for File:Petrorhagia prolifera (1).JPG (after pressing the show extended details button) looks like:

For reference, the one property that is in that file but we don't extract is Microsofts rating tag (namespace http://ns.microsoft.com/photo/1.0 , element name Rating). But we do extract the standard xmp rating tag.

Anyways, if you have any questions about XMP/IPTC/EXIF/other types of metadata in mediawiki, please feel free to ask me. Bawolff (talk) 22:28, 15 August 2011 (UTC)

Hi Bawolf, cool that's great news. Actually the only tag I really care about is the exif-imagedescription sicne I here put normally some information. And to have this is a real +. It seems that returns are not encoded? Thank you --Morray (talk) 12:13, 16 August 2011 (UTC)

Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean by returns? For Image Description what we will be doing in 1.18 is merging several types of info to decide what to say for that tag, including exif's Image Description tag (which was already extracted in 1.17) as well as dc:description in XMP, and iptc caption. We first check for exif, if that's not there move on to either iptc or xmp. (following MWG guidelines). Cheers. Bawolff (talk) 21:34, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
Hi, I though of the iptc part. And by returns I thought of en:Newline. --Morray (talk) 17:42, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
Oh. At the moment we treat the metadata as if its wikitext (which is probably un-ideal, but it does make urls become linked) so a newline (and other whitespace) will be collapsed in general, but 2 consecutive newlines will go through. Bawolff (talk) 23:16, 24 August 2011 (UTC)

WLM[edit]

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

 1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
 2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
 3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Welcome, Dear Filemover![edit]

Commons File mover.svg

Hi Morray, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

 • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the rename template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
 • Please do not tag redirects as speedy. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references.
 • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

Wiki Loves Monuments 2014 startet in Kürze[edit]

LUSITANA WLM 2011 d.svg

Hallo Morray,

( Bernd Gross, 16. August 2014)
