Categorising

Over-categorization

Hi, thanks for the heads-up. I have now got into categorizing all my uploads, and have even managed to create some new categories where necessary. Happy New Year, ACCassidy (talk) 14:32, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

Great, but please don't over-categorize your uploads. Multichill (talk) 21:55, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

Categorizing

I try to do that using "find category", twice, both time it says error. Any idea how to do it simpler? like typing it for instance. Serenity (talk) 00:54, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

The toolserver is not fully functional at the moment. The find category tool is down :-( Multichill (talk) 21:52, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

Cordialement
--H'arnet (talk) 12:40, 25 December 2008 (UTC)

I have read the message that was left on H'arnet talk page and I understand completely the point he is making. I am a native speaker of English and taught for 30 years in a secondary school, and can confirm that the level of English needed to understand the message is higher than is needed to enter an English University. Technically it is perfect, but above the heads of most of the population. I hope by discussing it here we can get the template changed in a positive way.
This is what it says:
Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.
To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.
You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.
The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!
Thank you
So how can this be improved. There are three ways
 1. target the recipient
 2. limit the vocabulary
 3. eliminate sentences with complex grammatic structures and replace them with simple sentences. Put the subject first, use active rather than passive, remove words like can, should, must where possible.
So how may it look.
Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Commons images are used by editors on many projects in many languages. Each image is put into categories. This helps other editors find them. Please add categories to each image you upload.
To add an image to a category, add the following code to the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbit of comets, add the following to the image description page:

This will make the diagram show up in the categoriesAstronomy diagrams, Comets.
For further information on categories read Commons:Categories.
The CommonSense Tool often helps you find the best category for your image.
Here is a gallery of your images. Please check that each image has a category. Thank you.
So this is targetted at a editor who just learning about categories. Reluctantly, we must miss out the invitation to join the categorisation team- and we can't at this stage ask them to geotag the image. The new text is taken from the Commons:Categories page, but simplified a little.
So I leave these ideas here to be discussed- and return to my extra-wiki life. :-ClemRutter (talk) 15:55, 25 December 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for you message ClemRutter. My bot just uses the standard template located at . You suggestions probably make it a lot easier for starting users. Do you feel like changing the template? Multichill (talk) 12:44, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

Categories

Hi. Your bot just left me a message on my talk page, asking me to categorize a picture. The thing is, this picture already was in a category (I added another later...), so maybe your bot need some "tuning"? It also should be said that I imported the picture from en.wp using the move-to-Commons assistant. Maybe this is the reason? Don't get me wrong, the request was no problem, I just thought that I should make you aware of this "oddity". Have a nice day! 3s (talk) 12:02, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Check the timestamps. You added a category after my bot left you a message:
 1. Upload of file: 10:53, 4 January 2009
 2. Notification : 05:35, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
 3. Adding of category: 12:55, 5 January 2009
Multichill (talk) 17:15, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
But the category Category:Australia was there from the upload[2]. I added the second category after the notification. This is no big deal to me, but your bot missed the first category, so maybe it needs some checking up. 17:29, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
Ah, ok. My bot only checks if Uncategorized is present. Multichill (talk) 21:31, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi Multichill. I hold you in high esteem for what you (and your bot) do for Commons. However, in this case you have taken the wrong decision IMHO. The deletion reason was, that this image has resided for more than one month in Category:Low quality chemical diagrams (reasons: very poor quality, inappropriate file format, incorrect angles) without objection and it is not used in any wikiproject. If you insist that a non-vector format file of this chemical structure should be available on Commons, I could move en:File:Dimethoxyethane chemical structure.png to Commons or draw a PNG version by my own. --Leyo 03:33, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Category:Other speedy deletions was very overloaded. I cleaned it out that day, when in doubt the images where kept or nominated for regular deletion. Deleted it now, the quality really sucks. Multichill (talk) 20:44, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. --Leyo 20:45, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for notifying me that I forgot to categorize this file - I used a workaround, as of now, but think it is not so much of private than of public use -- have you an idea how to categorize properly thisone? Was reluctant to add it directly to the hundreds in Cat:Wikipedia. If you please have a look at it: It's content should be self-explanatory. Best, [w.] 06:57, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Hard one. Maybe in a category describing the process, like "image analysis" or "magnifications"? Multichill (talk) 20:38, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
Actually, if YOU are not aware of any already existing appropriate CAT, I think I'd prefer to call it "my private baby" until someone installs one such CAT. Always remember: There should be ~10 items in a CAT ;))) [w.] 21:04, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

Coordinate tool (English Version)

In your copious free time..... it would be really useful if you could add a limited English version to the two existing options. I realise that there are complications in trying to add every feature, but a limited version would be adequate 90% of the time. I tend to use coord ( using decimal coords- with format=dms) but the output format changes if the input format is in dms. The option display=title, display=inline, display=title, inline would be nice but only the first is essential. See WikiProject Geographical coordinates for the full gory details. Clem

Hi ClemRutter, it's still on my to do list, haven't really gotten to it. I need to make some other adjustments too. Don't know when i get to it. Multichill (talk) 18:30, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

Category in template not detected?

Bot sent me a message about File:DADVSI_protest_dsc07829.jpg being uncategorized. It is actually category through a template. David.Monniaux (talk) 19:42, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

No, ignored. Templates should never add topic categories, bad practice. Take a look at my archives for previous discussions about this topic. Multichill (talk) 19:44, 7 January 2009 (UTC)
I take it that you unilaterally decided that this is "bad practice". Please then tell your bot to stop spamming my talk page. David.Monniaux (talk) 00:09, 9 January 2009 (UTC)
Multichill, the fact that there are many previous discussions on the topic should give you a hint, that it is not agreed-upon that this is "bad practice". There are good reasons to be very careful and hesitant with putting categories in templates, but there are still valid reasons to do so under certain circumstances. The bot cannot judge, so it shouldn't tag those files. --Slomox (talk) 00:34, 9 January 2009 (UTC)
Categories in templates create many problems, especially when maintaining and renaming categories. Categories in templates are equally a source of corrupted category counters and invalid displays, have for example a look in Category:Football kit. It can take several weeks before a category change in a template is correctly rippled through in all category displays and counters. --Foroa (talk) 07:35, 9 January 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for responding Foroa. Multichill (talk) 20:36, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

adding categories

Hi Multichill, I'm doing some category work here on commons. Your BotMultichill gives me great hints which images need attention. My proceeding is as follows:

 • if I find an image, I can categorize completely, I will add the categories and remove the template
 • if I cannot categorize an image completely, but only partly, I will add the obvious, high level category, and leave the Unc-Template untouched. As an example see File:Cuchorus070407.jpg. My intention is that someone more confident with that high level category and working with that category, can find such an image now and can add detailed categories to files he/she otherwise would not have seen at all. My second hope is that the uploader will get a change-notification and add the missing cats himself through his observation list.
 • Furthermore I and others use the maintenance category Category:Mountain puzzle to flag images of mountains that are unnamed in the filename and in the description. We play a game on that to recognize mountain pictures.

Now your bot has started (at least I did not see this until now) to remove the Unc-template as soon as there is at least a single category added. Which will remove the image from the list, where others could add more categories.

My questions:

 • is there a way to add categories only partly and leave the Unc template there for others, so that your bot will not remove the Unc?
 • is there a better way how to proceed in cases mentioned above? E.g. not to add partial category sets at all. Replace the Unc template with something else your bot will not touch? Replace Unc by Chc?

--Herzi Pinki (talk) 15:10, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi Herzi Pinki, a lot of images tagged with Uncategorized were actually categorized. Images which have topic categories shouldn't be left tagged. You can always categorize what you see, something like Category:Unidentified mountains or Category:Unidentified lakes. This will place the images in a logical place in the category tree giving other users the chance the refine it. Taking your example (File:Cuchorus070407.jpg); this image has a category now so it shouldn't be tagged anymore. The templates Uncategorized and Check categories are intented to get images somewhere in the topic category tree. The process of improving and refining the topic category tree is outside the scope of these templates. Multichill (talk) 15:40, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

Institute of Heraldry Images

Your Bot keeps mnissing the fact that all my military images are categorized by definition. For your information, the category is Category:PD US Army USAIOH. It is a combined Category, and Permission Statement. If youy look at the bottom of each of my military images, you will find the category listed. - CORNELIUSSEON (talk) 15:16, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Category:PD US Army USAIOH is a source/licence category, not a topic category. To quote Commons:Categories: Category:Topics - This category is the global common root of the media files categorized by the TOPIC. ALL media files should be categorized under this category for the sake of allowing others to find them by topic. These images should probably be categorized somewhere in the Category:Heraldry tree. Multichill (talk) 17:09, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
Question: Is there a location that fully explains how to construct category trees in less than 100 words? I tried to find such an explanation, but the information is distributed so widely that it requires more time than most people have to devote to such a project. Incidentally, we of the Wikipedia Military History group don't mean to impose our files on Commons - we would much prefer to keep them over on Wikipedia - but they insist. If you check the images in question, you will find that they were all posted as part of projects over on Wikipedia, with some of them being also used over on Wikisource by the same group of people. Their deletion has an effect on those projects. - CORNELIUSSEON (talk) 23:11, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
Don't know if we have a page on how to build a tree. Its good to upload your files over here, when you get the hang of it you'll like it over here. You're talking about deletion, what deletion? Multichill (talk) 19:59, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
I found one or more categories for the images mentioned at User talk:CORNELIUSSEON#Please link images. Multichill (talk) 20:33, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

Being challenged by you, I went looking at what categories I could find already assigned to US Military images, and assembled them - with others to break things down - and have assembled them into a tree that branches off from Category:Military history of the United States by service, and proceeds via Category:History of the United States Army and Category:US Army Heraldry. Once I started looking at how other category trees are assembled, I finally got the hang of it. IT IS NOT INTUITIVE. Indeed, the assembly of a category tree works opposite to how a person would normally expect it to work. Incidentally, I see that I will have a seperate job just cleaning up all the cats and dogs created by people who had good intentions, but didn't bother to check over on the Military History portal over on Wikipedia. I referenced my tree over there so there shouldn't be too much trouble in this area again.

Question: How do you delete empty categories that won't get used again?

CORNELIUSSEON (talk) 14:48, 8 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi CORNELIUSSEON, nice to hear you are getting the hang of our category system. If you move files to another category you can use Move, if a category got moved to different categories you can tag it for speedy deletion (i cleaned it out!). Multichill (talk) 10:44, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

Multichill (talk) 10:48, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

One of the images I have submitted Image:Christine Drakenhall.jpg had its image page vandalized yesterday by an anonymous user (see page's history) and your bot caught it and accused me on my talk page of not having categorized the image. I couldn't undo the vandal's edit "The edit could not be undone due to conflicting intermediate edits" (whatever that means) but have managed anyway to restore the correct info & categories. Thank you! I carefully categorized all my images. Do you think there will be a lot of this kind of problem? EmilEikS (talk) 08:40, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

cateograize

You have asked me to categorize an image (Nether Horsburgh 02.JPG) that I have uploaded on to wiki-commons, I took your advice and used the common sense tool but it only seems to recommend The two categories that i have already used, so I am unsure where I have gone wrong. The image was simply a long view of the castles location and, I feel it is not really suitable for any other use. So I will leave the matter in your hands.

Old Kirkcaldy harbour and Andrew Carnegie birthplace pictures

hello Mulzichill, just me here to say that i would like to see the Old Kirkcaldy harbour picture scrubbed (removed) from Wikipedia commons because it is too small compared to another upload of the same picture of a more proportional size. i'm not sure this is possible though. anyway, i took another picture (Andrew Carnegie's birthplace in Dunfermline) which was uploaded onto the ordinary wikipedia and then onto wikimedia commons (two months apart) since i wanted a copy of the picture to kept on this site. (no modern pictures of the birthplace existed previously)thing is, i would like to get rid of my initial upload done in November 2008 so the latter remains. Hi, I tried, a while ago, to request a rename of misnamed (neither proper English, nor corresponding to name conventions) Category:Van Gogh selfportrait which was never touched by Siebot, nor by anyone else. What do you think about? Did I make something wrong with my request? [w.] 07:15, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

You used code that should be added to User:CommonsDelinker/commands. Multichill (talk) 11:24, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
Ooops, &tx.
Question: How about those other similarly mis-constructed category names? Should I put similar rename-requests there? (I rather guess: yes -- some day, that mess should be ~cleaned up [some day beyond my lifetime, I'm afraid to suppose ;]] -- but as long as the pa~/maternal category is misnamed, there's quite some risk that misnamed subcategories might be created again.)
HARRrr: There's a gipsy proverb; in German: "Der Fisch beginnt am Kopf zu stinken" ;]] [w.] 14:10, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
Just use Move to move categories around. For obvious errors (spelling mistakes) you can start moving right away. Multichill (talk) 20:14, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

Bot notification

Hi, you sent me a message that my picture File:Nefertiti_Standing-striding_Berlin.jpg was uncategorized. Alas, it was uncategorized because the page had been vandalized on that very day. Would it be possible to program the bot so it can find out that an image indeed was categorized from the very beginning, and only now has lost its categories, and flag such pages differently? --AndreasPraefcke (talk) 08:55, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

No need, I think, to lookup whether a file was categorized from the beginning, it is rather about finding out that someone removed all categories from a file which was categorized just before which is what the bot does to some extent -- it finds "CAT=0", but without noticing what was before. De facto, the notice (which admitteldy seems unpleasant to brave and experienced users) just says "no CAT found at this bot-run" (and actually informs the uploader that something is wrong, albeit by vandalism).
So, it might be useful, as a first workaround, to work on the message which imo is too verbose anyways, and which irritates users with poor English, as the translations also point to English "How-To"-pages which require for instance better English than I would speak/read -- result of which is a lot of "noise" on questions which just lack proper and simple "How-To"-answers (as can be seen on this talk page!).
To reduce avoidable "stuff", I did a testedit on Template:Please_link_images/de recently, which was up to now neither reverted nor discussed. I think I'll go one step further and add a note on possible vandalism; maybe we can talk THERE in German about how to improve, and introduce the output of such talk into the en version later? [w.] 10:04, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
@Multichill: As you are de=1, I'd very much like to invite you to have a look at quoted "~translation" (rather: interpretation) and to comment there, albeit in en. As COM increasingly adducts people with poor en knowledge [I became interested into this issue due to some ca user, recently], I think it is quite substantial to "welcome" them in a more "multilingually welcoming" way, instead of putting them in front of an almost-ununderstandable "enCODEX" and thus "drive them away" (or, forcing them to create "noise"). Remember: There still are more [possibly] 'NON-en-' than 'en-' contributors 'out there'. How, BTW, about YOUR zh, ar, jp ...??? ;))) [w.] 14:35, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
The English version was changed, maybe change the de version in a similair way? Multichill (talk) 20:19, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

Translation thing

In case you miss it. It uses m:Template:ls and <div class="multilingual"></div>, IIRC. Probably uses css and/or js to hide/show the selected language. Not sure about anything beyond that.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 15:00, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

Hello from Arapaima; about my non-categoris. of "Northwestcoast amerindian bestiary.jpg"

I am sorry I blundered...But I dont see where I must go now to add that it is to be placed into : Ethnology/Amerindians/Pacific North West Coast art. Best regards --Arapaima (talk) 17:56, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

I added it to Category:Ethnology. Could use more specific categories. Multichill (talk) 20:07, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

how do I add categories once the photos are upload

Hello, how do I add categories once the photos are upload.

Terryjoyce (talk) 01:15, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

You can edit the image page just like any other wiki page. Just press the edit button (top of the page, third button). You can read how to add categories at User talk:Terryjoyce#Please link images. Good luck! Multichill (talk) 11:55, 15 January 2009 (UTC)
Please put that answer on top of all image forms! I knew this solution sometimes ago, but now I forgot and had quite a job until I found this message! Now it looks self-evident, but one is perhaps distracted because of the different procedure during image upload. --Pyt (talk) 07:25, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
That's basic wiki stuff. This would make the image forms to large. Multichill (talk) 13:13, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

Tequixquiac

—Preceding unsigned comment added by Marrovi (talk • contribs) 22:37, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

Please don't blank pages. If an image is a duplicate tag it with Duplicate. No need to delete Image:Charros Tequixquiac.JPG. Multichill (talk) 13:09, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

Well, 5 minutes ago, you create 4 pages with a Kept. I guess you've got a button somewhere to generate it. Be careful, because there is a typo inside your tools. Regards. - Zil (d) 00:06, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks, have to look into that tool. Multichill (talk) 13:02, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

uncategorized images

Please, stop the bot BotMultichill which insert the template Uncategorized to the images having the category included automatically by their own template as PD-DAUI. Periodically I have to remove this wrong inserts. Please, stop it. Bye Massimop (talk) 21:23, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Multichill thinks, categories in template are "bad practice" and should be disencouraged. I and many other users disagree with that bot malbehaviour, but Multichill doesn't appreciate those concerns.
Multichill, that for example is a perfectly valid template to include a category. It is used on all images taken from a specific book and all of these images should be placed in one category "images from book X" (in this case Category:Dizionario araldico ufficiale italiano). There's no reason to put one of the images bearing the template not in that category. --Slomox (talk) 23:39, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
Slomox is right in this case, and same would apply for all "Creator" templates, for instance, but: Having been very fond of such "auto-categorizing" by templates, a while ago, I meanwhile learned that such may cause troubles in many cases, and in any case reduces readability of the description page (in the editing-view, I do not see whether the file is categorized unless I know that template's rather hidden function). So, I meanwhile agree that it is not always that good an idea.
I wonder whether it would not be better (and easier) to find some bot which would turn autocategorized media into "normally categorized" ones, and switch off that "hidden" feature afterwards -- or, to have that bot running on a regular schedule, always before Multichill "hits".
An other solution might be to create some "whitelist" for those templates, to advise Multichill's bot to avoid them. [w.] 09:29, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
The best solution would be to generally avoid tagging categorized files with "needing categories". De-auto-categorizing by bot is useful for examples like my own Template:SVG-Map Africa by Slomox, cause that was a content category where different images of the series could go to different categories (not in a perfect category system, but in a system, that is not perfect and 'uneven'). But Massimop's example is perfectly valid. In Massimop's example category and template are intertwined. All images bearing the template should be in the category and all images in the category should bear the template. Another solution would be, to tag the images with another tag. Not "needing categories" but something like "needs additional categories". Category:Dizionario araldico ufficiale italiano is a category about the source. But the images could additionally be categorized by the depicted content. If the Multichill bot would state that in its tags, it would be an entirely different matter. --Slomox (talk) 19:28, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
As some of you already mentioned. It's my opinion that template constructs should be avoided for topic categories. At first it looks very useful, but after some time you'll find out it's actually a pain. The system of which templates to ignore works the other way around My bot contains a list of templates which don't add topic categories. This list contains almost all licence templates (things like GFDL, but also PD-DAUI) and these templates are ignored. So if the template isn't on the list it's assumed it adds a category and the image is skipped. I changed the template and did a bot run, all the files should be categorized now. By the way are Category:Dizionario araldico and Category:Dizionario araldico ufficiale italiano about the same thing? Multichill (talk) 12:28, 15 January 2009 (UTC)
The two categories are not the same, because Category:Dizionario araldico ufficiale italiano should contain only the images drawed for the official Document Dizionario araldico ufficiale italiano written by Manno in year 1907 (files named Araldiz Manno xxx) , when Category:Dizionario araldico should contain the images useful for clarify same heraldic terms. Massimop (talk) 14:15, 15 January 2009 (UTC)
Ok than Category:Dizionario araldico has the wrong name. Category names should be in English. Multichill (talk) 15:34, 15 January 2009 (UTC)
But the template your bot puts in says: "This file is uncategorized." That's not true and it's no wonder, that user's complain. We should change it to "This file does not contain any topic categories (what are topic categories?)." "what are topic categories?" of course should be linked to a relevant page explaining the difference between topic categories and non topic categories. Does a page like that exist?
Btw: Does your bot exclude non topic categories added in by hand? --Slomox (talk) 04:17, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
You might want to read Commons:Categories. All licence categories should be hidden and most already are so normal users don't see any categories at the bottom. My bot skips every image wich contains a category (). Multichill (talk) 13:20, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
Readers won't notice the contradiction, but uploaders do. It's mostly uploaders who notice the edits to their files and its uploaders who are the ones to know what categories would fit. So the template should address the needs (and avoid the confusion) of uploaders. --Slomox (talk) 15:04, 17 January 2009 (UTC)
Feel free to improve the template, it's located at Please link images. Multichill (talk) 15:08, 17 January 2009 (UTC)
Please link images should be improve and Uncategorized too. But in what way? We need to make the reader aware of the concept of "topic categories". --Slomox (talk) 16:51, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

How do I know what category?

On User_talk:Lou_Sander, you suggest I put my images in categories. The instructions for this are opaque. How do I know what category my images belong in? (Many of them are diagrams for illustrating the Analytic Hierarchy Process, a tool for decision making. There is no obvious category that I can find.) Lou Sander (talk) 14:35, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

You have to ask yourself questions like: What is it or where is it? For example File:Bere&ModernBarley.jpg the what is a farm, the where is United Kingdom (not sure). That would give Category:Farms in the United Kingdom as a relevant category. You could also add a category of the village it's in. Multichill (talk) 16:10, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

Images categories and account migration

Hello Multichill, I recently got a message from your bot saying one of the images I had transferred from a wikipedia into wikimedia had no categories. I assume it is a bug in the bot because I checked and the categories were there... Unfortunately, I have recently migrated to a new user name and all the images have not been transferred to the new account. That makes it difficult for me to do any checks on images as the ones suggested by your bot. Thanks anyway for your suggestion.--Rowanwindwhistler (talk) 08:50, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

No bug, the bot just checks for Uncategorized. The template and a category were both included in your upload. Multichill (talk) 23:28, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

commons_category_redirect.py

Hoi,

Ik was met mijn bot commons_category_redirect.py aan het testen. Nu stuit ik op een probleempje. Na ongeveer 2 minuten stopt hij ermee. Wat doe ik fout?

Ik start gewoon met cd c:\bot login.py commons_category_redirect.py

Moet er toevallig nog wat achter ofzo?

Groetjes,

Abigor talk 16:01, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

Helemaal niets. Zie Category:Non-empty category redirects.
--Foroa (talk) 22:10, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

Renaming categories

Only bunnies are allowed to hop here

When Category:Lazaretos was created it was different noun than Category:Lazaretto - the one currently in use on the en wiki. This is really not a controversial fix. I know about Commons:Rename a category, but is there a policy on this? Evrik (talk) 21:47, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

IAAS logo.jpg

hello Multichill, I have added categories now, in the process there was a box with info the logo might be deleted anytime (due to licens issues and not being free). However, in the end I could not find it anymore. Could you please let me know what this is about and what I could do in case? thanks, Sebastian Oltmanns (talk) 06:34, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

Tagged it as no permission. You're not the author of that logo. You have to get permission to use it. See the template for pointers. Multichill (talk) 13:03, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
Hi Multichill, the image is the logo of the International Association of Students in Agricultural and Related Sciences, you can find the article to this association in wikipedia. The logo has been updated at the General Assembly of the association in 2006, that is why I named the association itself as the author. I am the current president of the association though so there should not really be any problems with the us of the logo by me. You stated that I can send a mail with copy of a written permission to OTRS. However, I am the representative and not the "owner" of the logo, how can I do it then? Would a scanned letter with official stemp and signature be fine?

thanks for your help in this, Sebastian Oltmanns (talk) 10:36, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

I just changed Move into Rename, you have to ask User:Yug. Multichill (talk) 08:36, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

Dear Multichill, This image was transferred from Wikipedia to Commons and if the software functioned the way it should have then the categories should have been imported along with the image. Perhaps you could look into that? ciao Rotational (talk) 06:26, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

I don't know what software you used, but the image doesn't have a description, is tagged with three different licence templates and it includes both Uncategorized and a category (that's why you got the not, bot only checks for the template). What software did you use? Multichill (talk) 10:31, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

Categories

Hi, I had a message from your bot about categories. I do add categories when uploading, however sometimes these do not shew up when the image has been uploaded - obviously some sort of fault in the software here. Also, could your bot leave messages in a new section? Thanks. DuncanHill (talk) 14:30, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

Good you have my bot to inform you that something went wrong. Because of the autotranslation that is inpossible at the moment. Multichill (talk) 14:36, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

BotMultichill

Please see this history. I'm grateful that your bot drew my attention to vandalism on this page, viz., the deletion of its content, but it strikes me as bizarre that the best Commons can do in response to such obvious vandalism is to supply a bot to tell me the page now has no categories! Surely, we need a bot which reverts the emptying of the page? Regards, Xn4 (talk) 03:51, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

True. Vandalism should be caught before my bot comes along. The anti vandalism channel is back in business (after being down for god knows how long) and i hope someone is working on deploying an anti vandalism bot. Page blanking should be the easiest thing to catch. Multichill (talk) 22:24, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

Unused files

Hallo Multichill,

I'asking you since the automatic categorization by your bot seems somehow realted. Would it be possible for your bot to produce a list of all files in Category:Chemical images that should use vector graphics that are not used by any other project or are only used on commons. Cheers --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 20:23, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

http://toolserver.org/~magnus/files_in_category.php should do that job (can't test, as the toolserver is either slow or down at the moment). Do not forget (as I usually do ;) to change the "Language" to "commons". Best, [w.] 09:03, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
Probably at least 2 more weeks before the toolserver is back in business and my bots are fully functional again. You're not going to nominate these images for deletion aren't you? No need to supersede files. Multichill (talk) 11:14, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

No I'm not going to nominate them for deletion. It just to remove them from the category, since there is no urgent need to convert them. Cheers --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 20:48, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi Multichill, this is more or less just a post to keep the thread alive, since it is not urgent. Cheers --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 17:45, 25 January 2009 (UTC)
I guess that the ones which are not in use are already replaced by a better version. Multichill (talk) 16:54, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

I am trying to put this right but when I go to edit there are categories nominated.

Perhaps I am not doing things correctly.

Anyway I am grateful for your comments.

Link / Category Message

Hi, I just saw a message from BotMultichillT with a request for categorizing, saying the following:

The first does have a category, and has had since uploaded a few weeks ago. The second did not - my fault - but does now.

Both are used on English Wikipedia South African wireless community networks and User:Aymatth2, but they both show as not used when I look at them on Commons. When I double-click on them in Wikipedia, I see almost exactly what Commons shows, except it does show the links. Is there a bug? Aymatth2 (talk) 20:54, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

No, it's not a bug. Usage shows only the usage in the current wiki. If you want to see the usage in all wiki's you have to use an external tool called check usage. Multichill (talk) 16:41, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

Hello. Can you delete this file? I have better version here. Sorry for problem, but yesterday it was my first time here in commons and I made several mistakes. Tzawisko (talk) 10:38, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

Doublon

your bot tells me yesterday that the file File:Ferrari 500.jpg was uncategorized. I've found the problem : it's the same file as File:Ferrari 500.jpeg. These two files are now categorized here : Category:Ferrari 500 (racing car). May be one of these two should be deleted? I don't know...cobra bubbles (talk) 12:19, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

You can tag exact duplicates like this. Multichill (talk) 16:39, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

DAF YT 616/Volvo 222

Maybe because of my bad english but i do not understand the message wich you left on my talk page aboud uncatagorized pics.

 • Image:Volvo P222-122S.JPG is uncategorized since 29 November 2008. BotMultichillT (talk) 11:06, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
 • Image:DAF YT 616.jpg is uncategorized since 26 January 2009. BotMultichillT 06:06, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

As far as i can tell are both pics catagorized when is look at the bottom of the two pages. Do i understand you wrong or do i understand the procedures wrong? Please help çause i have no idea what i have to do about it to avoid further complications and i will probably make the same mistakes again. regards Macfip (talk) 15:48, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

Multichill (talk) 16:38, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

Lachhuhhh. Maar even serieus nu. After all. Macfip

That category doesn't exist and category names should be in English. You should probably put it in one of the subcategories of Category:Monuments in Germany. Multichill (talk) 16:49, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
Dank je wel! --JNM (talk) 16:42, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi (Bob Marley)

I added Bob Marley's guitar to categories. Thanks for the heads up. Cheers. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Djodorg (talk • contribs) 07:50, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

Cant we use Sat images from Google earth?? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Madhero88 (talk • contribs) 16:14, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

No, that's why i deleted them. Multichill (talk) 15:25, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

Where can I classify my picture ?

Hi, you wrote me a message about my unclassified picture called 'Panneau_South_Park'... The problems are I ignored I had to do it and I do not know where I can classify it. Can you help me please ? Dollymoon (talk) 16:34, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

I added a category. Multichill (talk) 16:59, 28 January 2009 (UTC)
I tried to classify my pictures but I do not know how to do it and where is their category. I am a beginner on Commons... I need help. Dollymoon (talk) 12:01, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

Question

Hi Multichill, I have a question for you (related to our discussions recently, but don't worry ;-) it's only a technical one):

The following category Category:Paddle_steamers_by_country currently has only your template categorising it (up to Category:Paddle steamers). Via your template's automatic inclusion function, it also links up to Category:Categories by country by alphabet. Says so via the link at the bottom of the category too. So far so good.

However, when I look through Category:Categories by country, I find it there too!

Is this because the template currently places the categories it is on in THREE categories (the subject category, and the metacats "Categories by country by alphabet" AND "Categories by country") or is this some strange cache / Commons update error, where the category is not fully "up to date" yte? Bot idea

When cleaning unknown categories, I noticed relatively high usage of Google/Internet/Photobucket/Myspace in Source/Author fields in description. I think such images are good candidates for No source. Bot will be useful to patrol new uploads and review existing images. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:40, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

Please talk with User:Filnik. He used to tag google images as no source. This started producing false postives about 6 months ago when google started with public domain (PD-old) images. Multichill (talk) 23:20, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

Uncategorized USMA map

Hello, your bot program has tagged the image File:1780 Map of West Point Defenses.jpg as uncategorized, but the image is Categorized as "United States Military Academy". I'm still fairly new at Wikipedia, so I'm not sure what's wrong here. Could you please take a look at it and tell me what I did wrong? Thanks. Ahodges7 (talk) 16:52, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

The category was added after my bot left you a note. Multichill (talk) 16:54, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

Missing category?

Hi, you have tagged File:Robotic Operating Buddy.jpg as uncategorized, but it is categorized... Can you take a look? ChickenFalls (talk) 07:01, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

No, you tagged the image as uncategorized. My bot only checks for Uncategorized and left you a note. Multichill (talk) 00:29, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

Zelfde probleem: Vermeend ongecatagoriseerd
