Kallima inachus[edit]

I think your edits to this article are very cool! I'd like to help out. Can you point me to a guideline I can read explaining how to do this with other articles? Rklawton 03:28, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

I am organizing taxonomy hierarchy via databese in personal. e.g. http://opencage.info/pics/Kallima_inachus.asp . I can constract as I need, then I made format processer for Template:Taxonav and link to Wikispecies. If you want to do like this, please check NCBI taxonomy browser. That browser system is awesome and taxonomy information is up-to-date. Is it enough? --OpenCage 04:26, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
Yes, I think so. I tried using it here: Papilio memnon. Does it look correct? Rklawton 13:22, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
I think it is correct. But, I don't know which is better way to organize taxonomy information with category or article.--OpenCage 13:48, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

I think categories are like branches of a tree. They help people find the leaves. The leaves are articles with galleries.

What do you think of this? [1] The redirect causes the page to categorize. As a result, this page redirects to a category that lists the redirected page (self-reference). Perhaps it is best to delete this page? Rklawton 15:47, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

Sorry, I have no idea against the best way choosing in Wikipedia commons. Because there many opinions, but I have less words in English. I will follow the main stream as a contributer.--OpenCage 16:02, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
I think you are doing good work. Thank you. Rklawton 17:45, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

Categories[edit]

Hello! Congratulations for your nice work! Can I ask you to add categories to the pages you create? For example, Cobitis shikokuensis can be (for now) in Category:Cobitidae. Thanks! PatríciaR discussão 18:45, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

Bor tarde! I am not sure about categorizing rule, becouse there are many opinions about Category and article. The pages I created is not mine, you are able to add or remover categories freely. Thank you. --OpenCage 22:39, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

Carrhotus xanthogramma.jpg[edit]

Hi. I've uploaded a new version of this picture because it contained a strange visual defect (the straight vertical line) which I have tried to attenuate. If you think I did wrong, feel free to revert by clicking on the "(rev)" link in the file history

I have also noticed that you had uploaded the same images without the watermark (credits/url) written onto them. Fine ! Thanks for that. Please, when you upload a watermark-free picture, could you also remove the watermark line in the description page since it is not useful anymore ?

One last thing which you may not be aware of : some of your images still contain watermarks, for example Hydromedusa tectifera.jpg, Chloeia flava.jpg and Rhina ancylostoma.jpg. BTW your pictures are really beautiful :-) Cheers. — Xavier, 02:17, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

Thank you Xavier for your maintenance my photos instead of me. I have removed watermarks and update some descriptions and taxonomy. I will check other photoes and remove watermarks soon. --OpenCage 03:21, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

Hello, OpenCage!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

uBio and EOL[edit]

Hello OpenCage,
Thank you for you excellent and beatifull pictures.
I saw that you put a lot of references in these pictures and categories you create.
That is a good habit because other create a lot of articles/categories without proving that their name is a valid scientific name.
I created some templates for you:

If you want explaination about their usage or if you want more, please ask.
Cheers Liné1 (talk) 12:53, 24 September 2011 (UTC)

Thank you. I have checked your modification for my uploaded photo. I will use these templates. --OpenCage (talk) 21:36, 24 September 2011 (UTC)

Articles vs Categories[edit]

Hello OpenCage,
As you created more that 500 articles (good job ;-)), I wanted to tell you about the species article/category war.
There are people that prefer species articles (you can follow any change in their content)(they did not put their pictures in categories), others who prefer species categories (for orders, family, genus there are only categories, so species cat is more homogene).
There was a war (really not joking: I have been screamed at from by both side) and finally they decided:

 1. We should not suppress a species category from a species article if there is one
 2. If there is a species cat on a species article, you should not add a genus cat. (This is an old rule: you cannot put 2 cat if one is in the other)

=> Conclusion: species cat won. Species article can still be created, but mostly they are meant for big categories as a selection/preview of picture.
So if you need to create something, prefer to create the category first. And if you want you can create both (the article being in the category)
Cheers Liné1 (talk) 13:12, 24 September 2011 (UTC)

I am not able to understand the war correctly, but guessed something happened. I think taxon is wikispices matter, then I only put article and category on my upload photo page. I will never make new article page or modify category page. I would be a just photo supplier on wikimedia commons. --OpenCage (talk) 21:47, 24 September 2011 (UTC)
And a hell of a good photo supplier ;-)
Forget about the war ;-)
Cheers Liné1 (talk) 07:02, 25 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi, I've been working on a small game built around animal quizzes and I wanted to let you know I've used one of your pictures.

I found your picture here: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Andrias_japonicus_cropped.jpg

And I attributed the picture like this: Opencage with this link: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Opencage and also added a link to the license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.5/deed.en

I hope you're happy with it, please let me know if this is not the case. You can find the game here: http://apps.facebook.com/animalalbum

P.S. Thanks for taking the picture and making it available.

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

 1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
 2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
 3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
