[edit] Image:User browser firefox.png
Hi, you wrote: "Derived from a non-trademarked, tri-licensed Mozilla globe icon and GNU GPL icon by Karabe.".
Who has licensed the Mozilla icon under a free license? According to mozilla.org there are restrictions on how and when the Mozilla icon can be used, restrictions which seem to be incompatible with the Commons critera for inclusion. Thuresson 00:04, 31 March 2006 (UTC)
- I didn't write it, I copied it from the English Wikipedia. And I know about the issues, I was the one who pointed them out most prominently at some deletion requests. Anyway, the image at [1] which Image:User browser firefox.png claims to be based on is not a Mozilla copyright or trademark. I'd say this image is a derivative of the freely licensed globe image Image:Deer Park Globe.png. w:User:David Levy was the one who uploaded the image and wrote that bit of text at the English Wikipedia, so direct any questions to him. --Pmsyyz 00:53, 31 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Madeira
Hi Phillip. Do you have an opinion about whether Image:MadeiraFlag.svg is more accurate than Image:Flag of Madeira.svg? If you think it is, please feel free to upload the more accurate version over "Flag of Madeira.svg", since we want that file to be as good as possible. If not, why did you revert Image:MadeiraFlag.svg? User:dbenbenn 04:59, 4 May 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, in my opinion, Image:MadeiraFlag.svg is more accurate than Image:Flag of Madeira.svg. But I don't see why we can't keep both. I see your point that the one at the standard name of "Flag of Madeira.svg" should be the best. I'll swap them. --Pmsyyz 05:08, 4 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] response on my talk page
Actually those were mistakes and really categories are about generalities, not specific names. Many Proper names have been changed in place of general names, as you may have seen in the conversion list. Anyway, I am not prepared to insist because as you will see from my comments, it required deeper changes to the scheme for air forces. This sort of thing needs to be done as part of a general scheme for air forces. I have made a response on my talk page. If you insist on restoration of USAF in the face of my arguments, I am prepared to put it back and not change Royal Air Force or Royal Australian Air Force so these can be hashed out by folks at some later date. -Mak 17:15, 22 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] USAF Logo Organization
Thanks for organizing the NAF logos page - I've decided to retire my Air Force website, so I'm dumping the images and information onto Wikipedia/WikiCommons. Keep doing a great job at what you're doing - I sometimes don't have enough time to make the index pages or add the little details - i'm usually just a format and structures guy. If you want collaborate in the future, send me a note. BTW - are they still allowing downtown trips to Abu Dhabi? Some reserve guys ruined it for us when I was there! ;-0 Tdrss 04:21, 4 February 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for uploading the emblems. Yes, you can still go downtown, but they make it troublesome to do so. --Pmsyyz 05:47, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] galleries and category
you revert my edits in KC-10 Extender and F-16 Fighting Falcon and F-15 Eagle. Could you tell me why ?
Now we have Category:F-15 Eagle who links to Category:McDonnell Douglas military planes, Category:Fighter Aircraft and Category:Aircraft of the United States Air Force, and F-15 Eagle who links to that categories. You didn`t think that is`n ok ? if category links -> galleries no links.
I want to clean Category:Military planes but your edits make that all my work are without sens. I was clean Category:Anti-aircraft weapons, Category:Armored fighting vehicles of the Soviet Union and Russia, Category:Towed artillery, Category:World War II aircraft, Category:World War II tanks, Category:World War II ships doing the same work and noboty wants to revert my edits.
So - could you tell me why you do what you do ?--Pmgpmg 09:57, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
- Galleries are not subordinate to categories. They are equivalent and serve the same function. A user should get the same information when looking at either. So if you just look at a gallery, you should be able to click on the same category links that the category has. See Commons:Images on normal pages or categories:Vote. So in this specific example, both Category:F-15 Eagle and F-15 Eagle should be in Category:Aircraft of the United States Air Force because they both are, and having the gallery in that category saves an extra navigation step for users. --Pmsyyz 17:54, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
- Yes but in that case we have doubles. In my opinion we dont need a Category:F-15 Eagle and F-15 Eagle in Category:Aircraft of the United States Air Force. If we take your solution in all categories we will be have category and galleries. Then why we should doubles that ? --Pmgpmg 10:13, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
Image:C-17 2006-05-10 F-2559D-003.jpg and Image:Keesler AFB students evacuate on a C-17 2005-09-01 F-9085B-027.jpg - why you revert my chances ? That images are in Category:C-17 Globemaster III who are in Category:Aircraft of the United States Air Force who are in Category:Air force of the United States. So - could you tell me why you links that photos 2 levels too high ? --Pmgpmg 10:13, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:Kennedy_presents_AFOUA_to_363_TRW.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{self|cc-by-sa-2.5}} to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

[edit] Re: Image:RQ-4 Global Hawk in hanger.jpg
See Commons:Deletion guidelines, specifically #3. This is an unclear case and not a clear copyvio so discussion is needed, which has occurred at the deletion request page. Please do not restore the copyvio tag. MECU≈talk 13:20, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
- {{copyvio}} is for use on obvious copyright violations. It seemed clear to me since the photo was not taken by anyone in the US federal government. --Pmsyyz 19:59, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

Hi! It has come to my attention that you have removed a warning which says that the page doesn't have enough information about the source of the image and/or doesn't have information about the license conditions. Nevertheless, it seems to me that this information is still missing and I have put back the warning(s). You may either add the required information or, if you think that required information is given, put the image up for a deletion request so that it won't automatically be deleted. Thank you. Siebrand 20:31, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
- Not all images are from public websites, so URLs are not appropriate for all sources. --Pmsyyz 20:33, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
- If that is what you claim, you should add more accurate information on where the image originated and how it got here. You are currently avoiding the issue. Cheers! Siebrand 20:37, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

- It was inappropriate of you to add the no source tag to Image:18th Air Force.png as it had a proper source. Though more information might be desirable, enough is present so that you should not threaten to delete it. It is an emblem of a US federal government organization. The probability is very low that it was created by someone else. You should assume good faith on the part of the original uploader, whom I know specialized in collecting such emblems. --Pmsyyz 20:43, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
- It was not inappropriate at all. I have no idea what the emblem looks like and I'd like to see some link to something that will give me more confidence that the alledged emblem is correct. I assume good faith, and still do. Cheers! Siebrand 20:47, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
- As some images are from offline or non-public sources they cannot all have web links. Therefore, you saying that all images without a web link to sources should be deleted is wrong. --Pmsyyz 20:51, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
- I say no such thing. You have to make a plausible case for having obtained a free image. Cheers! Siebrand 21:38, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

When categorising files, please avoid placing them into several categories that are directly linked within the same tree (e.g. a parent category and a child category - like Category:France and Category:Paris), to prevent over-categorization of files and over-population of categories. [edit] Bad bot edit
With this edit your bot put the redirect in the category instead of redirecting it to the category. It needs a : in front of the Category. Please have your bot fix all that it has incorrectly edited this way. --Pmsyyz (talk) 05:01, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
- A redirect from gallery to category namespace itslef is problematic and should not be ever done as it causes problems like the one you have mentioned. A {{softredirect}} or {{category redirect}} should have been used. This is a user error not a bot error I believe. -- Cat ちぃ? 11:20, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
- What's problematic about such a redirect other than the fact that your bot doesn't understand it? The point is that your bot can be adjusted to not cause the problem of adding redirect pages to categories because of bad assumptions. If a double redirect is ending up at a "category:", simply add a colon before the bot inserted redirect location. Will you not do so? Neither of those templates fit this type of redirect. --Pmsyyz (talk) 02:10, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
- Firstly I have indirect control to my bots code. This is because I use the SVN feed. I may point this to the people with SVN access per your request but the below issue still stands I think.
- Secondly hard redirects on categories are discouraged. This has been the consensus to my knowledge. For categories we use soft redirects (ex Category:Car).

Hello Pmsyyz!
Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.
To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.
You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.
The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

I am one of the founders of this portuguese encyclopaedia , a multimedia platform that we would like to integrate with the image of the day of Commons. Can you help with it? Feel free also to join our project :)). Kind regards JoanL (talk) 09:46, 28 August 2009 (UTC)
