Image:LadyDenman.jpg[edit]

Hello. You have marked Image:LadyDenman.jpg as being in the public domain because the author died 70 years ago. However, Eliot Hodgkin died in 1987, a good deal less than 70 years past. Angus McLellan (Talk) 15:48, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

I'm still not clear about these licensing issues. I understood that as the work was published in 1932 it would be in the public domain. Please advise. Poltair (talk) 15:53, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

You're not clear? Join the club! I don't think anyone here is entirely clear because it's not a simple subject. I found this flowchart for UK copyright that may be helpful. It is not, I suspect, 100% foolproof. I find the best thing to do when I am unsure is to ask: Commons:Help desk is probably the best place to try first. I am not 100% sure that the God Speed the Plough image is ok either. I know people are selling it, so it is very likely Crown Copyright, but if it is not it is still covered by copyright. All the best, Angus McLellan (Talk) 16:02, 22 November 2008 (UTC)
P.S. The God Speed the Plough image is PD in the US, so even if it is not ok here, you could upload it on Wikipedia. Angus McLellan (Talk) 16:04, 22 November 2008 (UTC)
I'm pretty sure that the God Speed the Plough image is OK. Following perusal of the useful flowchart you linked to, I think that Lady Denman is perhaps not. How do I go about having it deleted without a fuss? Poltair (talk) 16:17, 22 November 2008 (UTC)
I've seen the delete request. Thanks. Poltair (talk) 16:20, 22 November 2008 (UTC)
You can also just add something along the lines of {{speedy delete|Uploaded in error, not a free image, please delete}} to the page and someone will zap it fairly quickly, no fuss, no muss. I wouldn't be worried about this. I've had to have dozens and dozens of things I uploaded deleted because of similar misunderstandings. It happens to everyone here. Best wishes, Angus McLellan (Talk) 16:22, 22 November 2008 (UTC)
