Rama[edit]

You know, you used to be pleasant to deal with. What's wrong with you right now? Cary "Bastique" Bass parler voir 00:03, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

I do not remember interacting with you in the past.
I am sorry if I sound harsh, but you have to understand that we have lots of images that people upload here without knowing what they do, without understanding the importance of doing things properly, or even in deliberate violation of copyright laws. This matter has to be addressed energically.
Concerning the matter at hand, I do not doubt your good faith for a second. But you have to understand that you clearly do not know French laws involved; that apparently you are not yet conscious of the limits of your knowledge; and that law has to be respected as a whole, not "up to what we know". In doubt, we have to abide to the principle of precaution.
I know that some have this notion that "if the author is unknown, then we can count 70 years from the publication of the work"; however, this is true for anonymous works, that is work whose author wishes to remain anonymous; not work whose author we have been unable to find. And it is obvious that we cannot use a criteria like "I have tried to find the author and could not so it is anonymous", because how can we know when we have searched "enough" ? We are not a professional publication whose collaborators can devote the same amount of time than payed employees of a "professional" publication to do this sort of enquiries. Furthermore, it is very possible to miss an important ressource where the information is easy to find. And I am not talking about lazy people or people of actual bad faith who might upload anything pretending that the author is unknown.
Be certain that I am the first one to deplore some of copyright laws; but the more we dislike them, the more it is important to know these laws and conform to them. Rama 09:04, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

Caricature Charlie Hebdo[edit]

Bonjour,

Cordialement, Emirix 11:42, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

Pour un exemple déjà classé voir -> Category:Near Eastern Antiquities in the Louvre

Merci ! Rama 14:10, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

Category:Egyptian antiques by Rama[edit]

I guess you can delete your own images, right? A bunch of these have been listed on COM:CSD by User:Miniwark but I'm going to remove them. pfctdayelise (translate?) 01:14, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

Certainly, no problem ! Rama 14:12, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

RE[edit]

Hi. I speak about this with David Monniaux and he says me that those images are copyviol, probably. I charged those images for inexperience, and I put the source in the category of french Prime ministers. But, I repeat, is probably mistake. --RED DEVIL 666 11:18, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

I do not doubt your good faith for a second. Besides, it is quite possible that some of these photographs might be free anyway, for other reasons. It just needs double checking (if you could provide the URL, it might be helpful). Cheers ! Rama 12:39, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

CERN[edit]

Thank you for your contribution at CERN page. You have uploded a lot of images. I think, You shold resize them to a smaller size, because the resolution is not as high as many pixels the pictures have. Why don't make colour pictures, I think they are nicer, and under a picture I can refer to a colour if I want to speak a part of the detector.

On the page CERN the Image:CERN-Rama-47.jpg and Image:CERN-Rama-51.jpg is a broken link, could you fix it? -- Arpad Horvath 10:10, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

The only high sensitivity films I was carrying were Ilford 3200. Furthermore, I am colour-blind, and I use Linux, so scanning colour photographs is an unnerving endeavour for me.
Sorry for the sharpness, I am used to sharper lenses than this wide angle zoom (quite an optical catastrophe compared to the Summilux I am used to) and to less grainy films, so I scanned in maximum resolution out of sheer habit.
Do you work on the site in Geneva ? Cheers ! Rama 10:19, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

No I don't work at Geneva. I'm a teacher at a Polytechic near Budapest. But i'm on the way to get a PhD degree in the theme Particle and astrophysics in education. I'm not colourblind, but i mix red and green sometimes :-) You don't have some friend to help you to scan coluors.

For the sharpness. Perhaps at these pictures would be good a commant like this (linux package imagemagick)

convert -resize 50% rich.png rich_small.png

but I had a probe with a picture, and smaller has larger size in bytes. So if the size in bytes would be not smaller enough, the original picture is better.

-- Arpad Horvath 17:42, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

The server resizes the images anyway, so this is a problem only for those who want to use the full-sized images.
Anyway I am trying to find a way to improve these images, both in sharpness and colour. I have made benchmarks of the Summilux with a Kodak 400UC (professional colour negative) against the Minolta-Konica 7D, and I find the results depressing :p Maybe I can do something at the level of the scan. On serial letters, and on decision trees[edit]

Dear Rama, I d.o_k.n.o.w it was kind from you to welcome me, "any-IP", by serial letter, although I've made my serious joke on that. I just lacked the time to visit your page earlier. I took this time _now_ because I'd like to ask whether you think my "Decision tree on Uploading Images to Commons" (see COM:VP) might seem of some use to you. I'd like to have it translated into other languages, to be able to find out what would come out ON-SCREEN by such "ancient-type hardcopy", and to adjust my idea to reality. Therefore, I ask you whether (in case you like +support the idea at all) you might like to help for a "(ja)" version of such. I'd like to find out how to cope with such. In case you are interested, please leave a note here or visit my Talk page (to see my answer to your letter, btw, too). tx, &best, Wolfgang, from Austria. (You'd be very much welcome to answer in French, if you'd prefer - at the moment I'm just too tired, after some hours of English Talk, to switch over to French language without making too many mistakes. Good evening, w., _T.P.B 18:47, 8 March 2006 (UTC) PS: My welcome-gift to you.AND.the.World: Image:Exemplum JPEGis.jpg (I do know I'll have to work hard on this one).

Greetings !
No problems about the jokes. I wish I could offer more personalised greetings, but I simply do not have the time...
I think that you decision tree is a good idea, possibly a very good one. The difficulty now is of course to tune the content of the boxes to make certain that what we suggest will never contradict a law, and that we can give a fair general feeling of the topic (which is very very complicated, so it will always be rough and approximative).
When we are certain of what we want to put in the box, I will be happy to give a try to a japanese version, it would be a good exercise for me.
Thank you for the gift, and good continuation ! Rama 21:17, 8 March 2006 (UTC)
Hi, and thanks. Re: serial letter, I really mean its text just could be slightly changed, to make clear it being what it is, but sent by someone who signed it and, possibly, might be available for a question by following the link in the signature.
Re (ja), I did not know that someone still talked about the picture. I personally felt by just adding those extra-numbers (1) (2) (3) it might become sufficiently flexible, as by footnotes there could be given explanations as precisely as anyone might desire - so, we might not make things worse, but on many aspects better for the „simple user“, at once, without necessesarily having to disturb him. In case a discussion later comes to a point where a better tree can be made, and can be made as SVG, let's just forget about the this edition, or rather merge it into the next one. Therefore, if you (as soon as you) are able or willing to give japanese text (even less than perfect, just for a trial/demo version) please drop a line on my Talk page: I'm totally curious about the sizes the frames will have to have in such language. Later, Japanese users might help to improve any point of importance to them, hm? I'm going to unwatch this page from now on, as, for myself, I'm in some trouble about keeping my mind clear - I've read too many too different pages... Bye, Wolfgang Annie IP 21:27, 9 March 2006 (UTC)
Well, I talked to Soufron, our legal maven, who expressed quite an interest in your idea; he is quite busy all around, but you two might perhaps want to get in touch. Rama 10:51, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

On CERN picture[edit]

Picture editing on CERN27: I just now overwrote your picture. It seems my editor does better compression without noticeably loosing definition, so, the new version is somewhat smaller. In case you disagree with my decision, please just revert. Bye, Annie IP 22:14, 9 March 2006 (UTC)
Jolly good. I really have a very silly relation to my scanner, and this sort of bloated files of mine are quite symptomatic. Thank you for the improvement ! Rama 10:51, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

On mice and wikipedians policies[edit]

May I please ask you to show on recently created Image:Annie IP's serious jokes Nr1.png, as an example, how to deal with the merging of several souces with different Licences? I'm not in a hurry on this, but think it might be good to know what to do in such case - whether this can be managed at all without especially asking single contributors (that bastard who insists in his copyright on that ridiculous little exemplum-thing, mainly!) and asking them to change their mind. tx, Annie IP 09:54, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

I tried to give an opinion of Image talk:Annie IP's serious jokes Nr1.png; I hope it makes some sense. Cheers ! Rama 10:51, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

On editing "First Steps"[edit]

Hello, I start a dummie- or demoversion of "Beginners First Steps" on Commons:Erste Schritte which I discuss on Commons talk:First steps. Would you please have a look at it? I might need some protection for my idea, which seriously differs from acual First Steps by using several more little pages. As beeing in a flame war with (at least) one of the German admins, I'm afraid I might not be able to show my thing running before it would possibly be killed. TX, Wolfgang Annie IP 19:00, 10 March 2006 (UTC) Still raw translations and partially raw articles: User:Huitzlipochtli III./Annie IP's 1st; /Upload file; /Embed media.

Statues identified[edit]

I happened to be glancing through your Orsay photos and I've identified a few of them, adding notes to that effect on their description pages.

Given a little research I could probably name all the others, but that'll do for now! Hope this has been of some use.

Oh great ! Thank you very much ! I should have taken more time to note down these, but I was too busy toying with the camera... thank you very much, yet another example that this Wiki thing is a good idea ! :) Rama 21:47, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

Demande ... genante[edit]

Merci.... O.o

Karsh picture of Churchill[edit]

Hello. I see that you deleted the picture of Churchill taken by Yousuf Karsh. According to Library & Archives Canada the picture is in the public domain. See Image talk:Albert Einstein.jpg for further discussion on this. Why do you claim that it was a copyvio? Why do you not apply this logic to the other Karsh photos? I would like to upload this picture again, as it appears to be PD. However, I figured it would be best to discuss first. -- JamesTeterenko 23:16, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, I do not remember about this image. I might have been a mistake on my part, feel free to re-upload it. Rama 10:38, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

Template:Deletion_requests#category_.22French_Official_Publication.22[edit]

David Monniaux wrote some warning text on the template talk page, and I just added it to the template itself (but in a noinclude, so it doesn't show up when you transclude the template). Er... can we close the debate on COM:DEL? I think, unfortunately, all the people who need to understand your message don't actually read that page. pfctdayelise (translate?) 08:59, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

It does not seem to exactly cause a turmoil of enthousiam, yes :)
I think that there was probably no harm done, and with the warning, we have done what we can to prevent a similar error to occur again, so the debate can be closed, for me. Thanks ! Rama 10:10, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

One new picture for Anal sex ??[edit]

Hi Rama, I have found that you created that nice picture about Oral sex and was wondering if you might have been thinking about painting or drawing a similar one on Anal sex? There are so far only an ancient bottle and an Indian picture, and a new one would definitely enhance the article. Thanks! Hardern 11:15, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

More or less, but I though that the Japanese engraving illustrated the point rather well... But if you have specific ideas about what would be needed exactly, I am open to suggestions. Cheers ! Rama 11:53, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

Picasso image deletes[edit]

I note that a number of Picasso images present on wikipedia are not on commons. It seems that they were here once, but that you deleted them. EG: w:Image:Stein by picasso.jpg. Just wondering what the elaboration on the reasoning was on the image deletion of Picasso getrude stein. Your note was "trivially copyvio". The deletion discussion on Picasso images contained mention that images published prior to 1923 are PD-US, and the servers are in the US, so since this painting came out in 1906, why is this not PD-US? -Mak 20:11, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

Nevermind. I saw an answer to this issue in http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/Archives04#All_images_of_Henri_Matisse. thanks- ignore my query. -Mak 03:11, 8 April 2006 (UTC)
Yes, your answer to your own question is accurate; I would also love it if works of art could fall into the public domain 70 years after their publication rather than 70 years after the death of the author, but unfortunately, this is not the case. Rama 09:18, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
I know all these gotchas are old news to veterans like you, but it is frustrating for newcomers to learn the situation after having done a lot of work collecting images for upload. It would be nice to have a "Common misconceptions and mistakes" page for each PD template that is reviewed for accuracy. Not a page explaining the misconceptions and mistakes, just listing them, and making a reference to a stationary location where the issue is discussed. Oftentimes the issue discussion has been moved to an archive and the link is broken. Some of them as you are no doubt are all to familiar with are counterintuitive. EG: Just because a photograph was seized by the US from a nazi during WWII doesn't mean it is PD-USGOV. In war, it is legal to take away someone's breathing rights, but not their copyright- even if it is of photographs documenting genocide. Grim situation, but we have to stay legal. -Mak 19:51, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
We're talking about law, not about morality :p
I'm taking good note of your suggestion for this sort of FAQ, it is a good idea.
I hope that you'll find it enjoyable to contribute despite this unpleasant surprise. Cheers ! Rama 11:26, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
No worries- Commons will be a mind boggling reservoir of images even if we manage to get a fraction of the images that conform to the existing rules. Just the other day I uploaded a heap of Ansel Adames photos that he did for hire to the US GOV. Some are mediocre, but a few are really great images. This is way way cool. -Mak 06:14, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Louvres-antiquites-egyptiennes-img 2884.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL-self}} to release it under the GFDL or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. FS Siroco[edit]

Hi. I've just made Foudre class landing ships on the Polish Wiki. I have a question: if drawings like this are also covered by Net Marine licence? Pibwl 23:40, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

Hello, fellow Navy lover :)
I think that the licence of this particular drawing is an error. The source states "shéma et photos DCN" (sic), which means that the media are not by the people listed as having given their agreement. DNC is in fact the company which builds most warships in France.
I will remove this image, since this was clearly an error. Thank you and cheers ! Rama 09:20, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
Pity :-) I'll have to scratch some generic landing ship drawing myself in a free time then :-) Pibwl 19:09, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

Wiki links using language bar[edit]

There was a recent Village Pump discussion Commons:Village_pump#Navigation_from_Image_pages where I solicited interest in the question of where to place links to articles in other wikipedias. I will not repeat the issues here, but there was very little interest expressed. My preference (rationale also expressed on VP) is to move to a Language bar like method of indicating links. EG for da Vinci's Mona Lisa / La Jaconde:,

Mona Lisa Links: Template:Lang-Mona Lisa

The technique has a number of advantages. For situations such a photo from a diplomatic conference, this would allow links to multiple sets of articles eg concerning the Malta conference about Stalin, Churchill, Roosevelt. That is, there would be one bar for Stalin, one for Churchill, and so on. Interwiki links on the sidebar makes one subject seem so much more important at the expense of the others.

What do you think? I ask because you have edited some of the Info templates I have been working on.

I am very open to any suggestions about how to format the multiple language designations. I tried to get the title "Mona Lisa" in multiple forms, but the expansion of terms can be huge. Consider for example the vernacular terms for Ostrich in other languages Category:Struthio_camelus- so an interwiki link bar would be huge/ unusable for such terms.

Technically, I understand perfectly how I will implement any variety of formats, so I need no assistance there. On the other hand, if you think the sidebar method of doing interwikis is better, that would be helpful too.

-Mak 16:51, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

My first impression would be that the two methods are not mutually exclusive : side bar for the general article, and templates for cases such as your example. This said, it might be quite a challenge to maintain the template : in my experience, sections within Wikipedia articles tend to change rather often. Good luck ! Rama 07:15, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

I agree they aren't mutually exclusive and I am not making any case to omit the traditional use of interwikis.

I was not aware that I made links to sections within articles in my example. But you are right, people could do that. I think the entire Mona Lisa articles will not go away, but there will be additions in other wikipedias. Happily though, this can be automated, since I name the info template the same as the english language article. Generally, everyone updates en.wikipedia with interwikis, so I can use that to find new interwikis. The bot periodically walks the info template list, accesses en, then updates these language bar entries. Then regardless whether anyone decided the interwiki bar uses the Category links or article links, there will always be a link to relevant articles in all languages. Seems maintainable to me, but perhaps I misunderstood your comment. -Mak 16:41, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

But the French wiki has a project which allows requests for vectorial drawings to realised, I will submit the case there and keep you informed. Cheers ! Rama 11:11, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

Image:Tournagemoliere1.jpg[edit]

Hi Rama, just wondering if you can help identify a possible source for this image? (it has a French caption) Thanks, pfctdayelise (translate?) 13:17, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

Here you go.
It seems to be self-made photograph, the Exif and size of the image look plausible. Rama 19:31, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
So the person put the caption on it themselves? pfctdayelise (translate?) 23:44, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
Let's say that it does not seem unlikely. The caption on the photo is purely descriptive there are no marks of copyrights (something I imagine a professional/commercial photo would not fail to have) ; the exif indicates a small digital camera unlikely to be used by professionals ; and there seems to be no official website for the film in question, so it does not seem to be the too-often-seen case of an official images dropped on Commons.
That said, I can enquire further if you think that this is safer. Rama 23:55, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
No, that's fine. If you think it's OK then I trust your judgement. I just can't judge about it because it's in French :). pfctdayelise (translate?) 00:22, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

La license la plus "convenient"[edit]

Salut, pourrais tu regarder Commons:Village_pump#Recomanded_licensing.

A+ Yug (talk) 19:39, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

Rama 09:56, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

Image:BD-propagande colour en.jpg[edit]

Hi, I hope you don't mind but I uploaded a new version of Image:BD-propagande colour en.jpg with a more idiomatic English translation. Just (rev) back if you don't like it. Angr 18:30, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

Special:Contributions/Rizom[edit]

Hi Rama... I can't find anything on the photo-blog that is listed as source, about licensing under any free license (not to mention that these are marked "self"). Could you talk to this user please? Thanks, pfctdayelise (translate?) 13:06, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

OK, done. Rama 20:51, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

Category:Images requiring rotation[edit]

Salut, I have been rotating images in this category and two of your images were placed here. My question is, as the interior light has made the phtographs with a yellow hue, when i rotate them, would it be ok with you to convert the image to black and white (gray tones)? Merci bien WayneRay 21:47, 20 June 2006 (UTC)WayneRay

Thank you very much ! Actually you can do even better by applying a little autolevel. This should restore much of the colours as not "yellow"ed by the artificial lightening. Sorry I did not so that myself at the taking of the photo, I have a new camera with which I am not yet completely familiar. Thank you very much for your work ! Rama 22:58, 20 June 2006 (UTC)
I tried to lighten up 4 of your photos and rotated at least 6. Let me know if they look alright WayneRay 20:37, 21 June 2006 (UTC)WayneRay

Commons-l subscription[edit]

Hello Rama,

as per Commons talk:Administrators, I am asking all admins to subscribe to commons-l, a mailing list for Wikimedia Commons policy and project discussion. Since many admins are only on Commons infrequently, this is a good way to alert people about important happenings. The mailing list is nominally multilingual, but predominantly English.

If you are already subscribed to commons-l, I apologize for bothering you, and you are free to ignore this message. If you don't want to use your regular e-mail account, feel free to leave me a message, and I can send you a GMail invite. Traffic on the mailing list is relatively low, and we do not expect admins to read all messages to the list, but it would be nice if you could check on it at least every few weeks. Thanks for your time,--Eloquence 23:12, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

Done. Rama 11:49, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

Copyright issue[edit]

Hi Rama, you uploaded several images of Evstafiev Mikhail (e. g. [2], [3]). You cite him like following: “I see no problem with my photos being used on Wiki pages, would be grateful, as before if the credits say "Photo by Mikhail Evstafiev".”. Unfortunately this isn't appropriate, because free re-use – not just on Wiki pages – is one of the basic ideas of commons. Can you please ensure and clarify, that the copyright holder agrees to license his photographs under the terms of CC-BY-SA? Kindly, norro 08:54, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

Alexander G Bell First Telephone picture posting[edit]

Rama,

Please reveiw the pix you posted of the Copy of the original phone of Graham Bell at the Musée des Arts et Métiers in Paris. The phone with the blue hose is not Bell's phone, The Bell (Gallows)phone is in the far right rear of the picture (partial). That is the device you should have posted.

The angle of the picture made it look as though the blue hose devise was associated with the label #1 for Bell's device ----not so!

Cartes postales[edit]

Bonjour
