Jastrow (Λέγετε) 16:26, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

Commons:Deletion requests/Minerals[edit]

Hi :) could you give your input here? (I'm painfully going through oooold deletion requests...) If you want them deleted, I can do that (I hope they're not in use though), but personally I think it would be a shame because some are identifiable, even if blurry... Yes check.svg Done and thank you for pocking me. Cheers ! Rama 13:44, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, I'll close that one later today, if noone does it before. And now for something completely different... can you check this and see if I didn't screw up anywhere? Thanks again ;) Patrícia msg 15:19, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
Actually, it wasn't self-made, I found it somewhere on a US government website. I was young and foolish at the time (I'm less young now), so I neglected to note the source. Rama 16:43, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

requested illustration[edit]

Hi Rama, I have noticed your excellent illustrations elsewhere and was wondering if you could help resolve an issue we're (well, mostly I'm) having at the en.wiki article about waterboarding. Currently we have one non-free image in the text that shows a painting of waterboarding as practiced by the khmer rouge, and there also is a linked photo in the Vietnam War section of American soldiers using waterboarding. I would prefer that we have a free image of waterboarding at the top of the article, because we should have a free illustration of waterboarding, and then we can move the non-free painting down to illustrate waterboarding in the cambodia section. Is this something that you would be up for? Calliopejen 21:07, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

Hello,
on the principle, I'd be glad to. However, given the sensitivity of the subject, it will be important that the image be quite exact, and at present I do not believe myself knowledgeable enough in this procedure to illustrate it. I will try to see if I can find documentation detailed enough so that I can have a good understanding of it and I'll keep you informed.
Cheers ! Rama 14:16, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

Bonne continuation ! Rama 19:05, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

Colophon[edit]

Salut Rama.

Rama 16:32, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

Image:Mitsubishi Zero-Yasukuni.jpg[edit]

Hello. I find Image:Mitsubishi Zero-Yasukuni.jpg and wonder why you erased the image's background. It looks unconventional and somewhat strange, because I didn't see any aircraft picture like that on commons. I also think the information of location where pictures taken is important, so I would like to revert the image, sorry for your effort. How do you think this? --Tataroko-common 18:02, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

Hello,
it is a common practice to detour objects when the background is no significant (see Image:Background extraction.jpg for the canonical example).
In this case I though that the background was not significant: only a small detail of Yasukuni is shown, it is a modern setting, and nothing special seems to happen. So I detoured the plane and put it in a 3x2 ratio image.
Since you object, I have reverted Image:Mitsubishi Zero-Yasukuni.jpg and uploaded the detoured version under an alternative name.
Cheers! Rama 08:33, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
Thank you for your quick response! It is the nice idea to upload the no-background version as another file. I think it is valuable.--Tataroko-common 11:34, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

OTRS ticket question[edit]

In this discussion you mentioned that you received the confirmation email in regard to the photos by Dwight McCann. Two of the images were subsequently tagged with OTRS tickets [2] [3]. The two tickets appear to be different, I was wondering which was one is correct or which one is better to tag the images with? BlueAzure 19:29, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Both URLs point to the same ticket. More specifically, [4] leads directly to the text of the ticked, and the other one to a one-item list containing this ticket.
I would have a slight preference for the URL [5], but both are valid. Cheers! Rama 21:08, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

deprecated function in your monobook.js[edit]

Dear user, I noticed that you use the includePage function in your monobook.js page.

This function is now obsolete, as the importScript function was introduced with rev:35064 to the MediaWiki Javascript core library wikibits.js. It also keeps track of already imported files.

To allow us to remove includePage from Mediawiki:Common.js I'd kindly ask you to replace its use with importScript (same syntax!). Thanks! --Dschwen 17:03, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

On Categories, Sub-Cat etc[edit]

Hi Rama, as your'e obviously familiar with such, please have a look at Category:Russkaja. An IP created a sub-cat and moved most of the pics there (all of them are from same concert). Would you advise to leave the sub-cat (as by now) and move the other 5 files there, too? TX, WeHaWoe 09:46, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

Obviously, a category containing only a sub.category makes little sense. In the obsolute, it is not necessarly a bad idea to create a sub-category for each concert; maybe it is just a bit early now. I would personally have left everything in the same category and created a gallery for finer distinctions (like which concert the images where taken at), but this is a matter of personal understanding.
In the particular case, I would advise leaving the best images in the parent category so that they are readily available, and putting everything in the subcategory of the concert.
Cheers! Rama 13:54, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. In case I get a couple of pics from another concert of that group, at another place, soon, should I create another sub-category? --WeHaWoe 14:03, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
Oh, one more thing: would you please proofread Template:Pink_CC/fr ? My French is somewhat "less than perfect" ;) TX, WeHaWoe 14:33, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
Things are somewhat more complicate: Two (or one?) definitely football fan(s) created categories (partly overlapping) and tagged a quantity of images. So, we have now
Again: How about creating catogories on ONE single pic, & on one single event: do you think that's useful? (talking about Category:Switzerland - Czech Republic, 7 Jun 2008 and more similar to come). I'm not aware at all about "how much noise" creates such to servers, therefore would rather be reluctant. I meanwhile accept
It is not a problem. These categories could be populated later on. Rama 19:17, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
ACK. I always am afraid that such might create more "noise" than ever being useful to WP.
Did you, BTW, have a look at my "baby" Pink_CC /fr template? Are you a native French speaker? How would I apply for ANY native speaker on commons? If I check Babel, there would come out hundreds of wikipedians who were not active for a while, TX, WeHaWoe 19:30, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

-- Asclepias 10:43, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

Merci pour l'information. Bonne continuation ! Rama 14:00, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
Entretemps, j'ai trouvé ceci : User talk:New Dog. -- Asclepias 18:35, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

5 different questions[edit]

  • Was I right to put Image:PossibleBug Show.gif under PD-ineligible as well? In case, you dislike to anwer this, where to ask?
  • I recently edited commons gallery Margret Hofheinz-Döring where all description is in German. In case, the gallery would be linked from, say, enWP, this would not make much sense. I therefore think about moving it to either "Margret Hofheinz-Döring (German version)" or Margret "Hofheinz-Döring/de" or similar. What would you advise?
  • I yesterday created "Creator:Margret Hofheinz-Döring" (which, up to now, is used in Image:Schulweg, Margret Hofheinz-Döring (WV-Nr. 94).jpg only. Would you please check whether the template is "technically" correct?
  • What's the best way to find a proofreader (I mean: someone who improves on my less-than-perfect English or French). Looking up Babel-4 or native speakers, I get too many wikipedians which were not active for a long time. I guess there is a better way (without havin to bore single persons again+again because they helped once ;) At this time, it is about en:Karin Schäfer.
  • Where do I find statistics on the growth of wikipedia? Say for instance, how many, average, would join on one day?

TX, Wolfgang --WeHaWoe 03:57, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

Hello,
  • Yes, PD-ineligible is correct (the image is a purely technical item rather than a work of art)
  • Galleries should in general be in English. The text at the top can be in several languages (see Leonardo da Vinci for an example). The descriptions of the images themselves should be in English and translations be featured on the pages of the images themselves; but in this particular case, it appears that they are often titles of the paintings, which is then acceptable. So here, the thing to do is just to add an English translation of the text at the top, and change the section names to English.
  • Creator:Margret Hofheinz-Döring is perfect, congratulations.
  • I would advise you to ask support on en:Wikipedia:Translation, and the different counter-parts in other languages.
  • A variety of statistics can be found from en:Wikipedia:Statistics, en:Category:Wikipedia_statistics and en:Special:Statistics. Good luck!
Cheers! Rama 07:53, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
TX for answering that soon. I'm still uncertain on #2, galleries: If someone would translate the picture titles within the "gallery" tags, it would imo blow up the caption/legend/underline [I use LEO ;] in an imo inappropriate way, and for sure, if there would be more than one additional language.
Do I unterstand right that such still would be better than creating separate gallery articles for each language? TX (whilst looking forward to your answer) --WeHaWoe 09:34, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
Yes, you understand correctly. We do not have separate galleries for different languages. Rama 11:45, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

Hello there!

Thank you for supporting my request for adminship, which closed unsuccessfully. I appreciate people like you taking the time out to support my efforts to adding content to Wikimedia Commons, offering to translate picture captions on IRC at a moment's notice, deleting images, or cooperating with me on OTRS by getting free licensed permissions for hard to find pictures. Again, thank you for your support. Thanks for believing in me. Have a great day!

Best wishes,

miranda

Also, thanks for nominating me. :-) miranda 21:59, 14 June 2008 (UTC)

Commons[edit]

Salut,

Me comprends-tu ? Ludo (talk) 06:33, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

Salut,
Oui, cette histoire de carte est choquante. Mon premier mouvement, comme tu l'as vu, serait d'effacer immédiatement.
Cordialement, --Pymouss Tchatcher - 13:17, 24 June 2008 (UTC)
Rama (talk) 13:39, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

Paris in 1981[edit]

Hello, Rama! Thank you for your work on identifying the photos from Paris which I uploaded today. I am in the middle of this job, about 80 more pictures pending for tomorrow. I'd be grateful if you can have a look at them, as well. Feel free to remove the template whenever you decide that there is nothing special about the object, I suppose there are such images, for instance Image:Paris-in-1981-006.jpg. Anyway, I hope that they are enough valuable to stay on Commons. Best regards, Spiritia 19:04, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

Hello,
I'll do that gladly when I have a bit a spare time. I didn't want to bother you but since you insist, congratulations on finding these images, they are most valuable as testimonies of everyday life in the recent past.
Cheers! Rama (talk) 19:32, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

Petite question...[edit]

Coucou Rama,

Rama (talk) 21:42, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

Category+Gallery[edit]

Hi, would you please have a look at my recent changes in Anton Karas and the category, just to be ascertained whether one can handle things that way. Main questions

  1. I moved all upper-categories into newly created Category:Anton Karas
  2. I added one weblink to the gallery. Will such be OK or less than welcome? --WeHaWoe (talk) 16:17, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
Seems OK to me. Weblinks are always welcome, it also works in categories.
However, I have concerns as to the validity of the licence of the images. Rama (talk) 23:12, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
According to German and Austrian law, anything that is permanently exposed to public (a statue, monument or similar) cannot be copyrighted ["Panoramafreiheit" -- which is quite different to US law, I learned; I'm not a lawyer, though].
I, BTW, immediately after uploading [one month+ ago] contacted the owner of rights (Karas' nephew+heir), who, up to now, did not reply nor protest AFAIK. That was my major reason to put his website on the gallery: to create a kind of win-win situation in any case. --WeHaWoe (talk) 19:19, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

Image:Betancourt.jpg[edit]

Hi! Could you tell me why you deleted File:Betancourt.jpg from commons? It was licenced under cc-by-2.0 on Flikr, as you can see here. {Sirabder87}Static age 10:26, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

The Flickr author has probably no right to licence his image under this licence (unless he is the author of the stencil and of the photograph from which it was derived, which is unlikely). This makes the licence invalid. Rama (talk) 10:32, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
I had this doubt too, but the original image has been made by FARC, so that I don't think it could be consdered under copyright at all. {Sirabder87}Static age 11:12, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
Why not? Columbia is a party of the Berne Convention.
And even in this case, the maker of the stencil holds a copyright on his adaptaion of the photograph. Rama (talk) 11:27, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
I don't think that stencil could be considered as an original work and FARC would hold any copyright but well, I accept your decision. {Sirabder87}Static age 11:35, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
Converting a photograph to a stencil is not necessarily a trivial endeavour. It is thus possible that it entails copyright.
Per Colombian law, the author of the photograph holds a copyright on it. I have not seen documentation from the FARC stating that their documents are in the public domain. So we must assume that the document is indeed copyrighted. Rama (talk) 12:02, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

Source[edit]

The source is properly given. If you don't like it or if you don't agree with it, request a regular deletion. Thank you for understanding. Dantadd 23:48, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

No there is not. There is no mention of the author, and no web page where this information can be found is linked. The purpose of sources is not to known whether the file exists somewhere on Internet, but to know whether it is free. Please refrain from removing source requirement tags again unless you can answer the question. Thank you. Rama (talk) 07:51, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
The file is hosted on a US government website, therefore the source is properly given, and it's no use to repeat endlessly the contrary. If you have restrictions about the source or the authorship, use the regular deletion request. It's your right and it won't hurt you. If you have the reason by your side (and I think you have it), the pictures will be deleted. The unnacceptable is trying to delete pictures with painless tags of no source when the source is given. To dispute the source, the regular deletion procedure should be used. Dantadd 19:02, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
No it is not. The author is not given. US government website do host media which are not public domain, because they are not made by the US administration.
If you cared to read the "No source" template, you would see "The author and source of the file must be given". It is in bold. Author and source.
Now please stop reverting this template as you perfectly know you must not. Rama (talk) 19:29, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
