[edit] Image:CNOOC.PNG

Image deletion warning Image:CNOOC.PNG has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

[edit] Datebox

Hello Paul,

A datebox is an excellent idea, although I think it would make a lot more sense on Commons:Picture of the day and Commons:Media of the day. Truly, as opposed to Wikinews, we have much less time-sensitive info, and while frequent editors might appreciate a reminder of what the time is, casual browsers could care less. Besides, chances are that experienced editors have other ways of keeping the time. As for the date, it is listed twice on the main page, specifically below Picture of the Day and Media of the Day... which makes me think that those places could use a datebox. Don't know so much about the Main Page, though :)

An added thought: another pitfall of the datebox is that the page is squid cached when it is generated, and the datetime is cached into it. This cached page is sent to all users unless it's purged or edited. Which means not even a client-side cache wipe could refresh the date, but only an "?action=purge" command sent to the server. I don't want to sound like I'm opposing everything that is new and great, but the datebox might not be so efficient after all. Thanks for your understanding. —UED77 01:01, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

By the way, keep up the great work with the Image classification system. Be sure to move it into the Commons: namespace when it's done! (Or I'll move it for you.) —UED77 00:56, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, Paul, but I see through your contribs that you are active, but have not responded. I'm going to remove the datebox for the aforementioned reasons. Thank you for your understanding. —UED77 13:04, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] BadJPEG tag on Image:Florida Ave (Washington DC).JPG

Hello, Rfc1394. I have restored the badJPEG tag on Image:Florida Ave (Washington DC).JPG. First, it seems odd to me that the PNG version of this image would be larger, unless you are trying to convert the JPEG into a PNG (which will not solve the fundamental problem). But the primary reason I restored the tag is that the size of the file is not the most important consideration. Images that use JPEG compression suffer from compression artifacts, and these artifacts will get progressively worse if the image is modified and resaved as a JPEG. The PNG format does not have this problem. The quality of an image is maintained when an image is saved as a PNG, but JPEG compression reduces image quality. For these reasons it would be better to have a PNG version of this map, even if the file size is somewhat larger than the JPEG version. (Also, there are ways to reduce the file size of a PNG image without losing any image quality, whereas reducing the file size of a JPEG image always results in a lower-quality image.) If you have any questions, please let me know. —Bkell (talk) 19:23, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

Please do not implement this on a wide scale (a few examples to demonstrate it are OK - but please indicate that it is experimental) until it has demonstrated community approval. This would be a major change and should not be implemented by stealth.

[edit] Area code map dataset

Hi, I'm working on adding area code and ZIP codes to all 42000 city/town articles on English Wikipedia, and am looking for a dataset for the boundaries (in a shapefile or some other formate) of all the American area codes and ZIP codes. You seem to have created some maps using such boundary files, so can you let me know if you will send them to me, or tell me where I can download them? Thanks, --CapitalR 00:53, 17 March 2007 (UTC) (also known as User:CapitalR on Wikipedia).

Hello Rfc1394,

the following content you uploaded is not free and therefore had to be deleted:

The Wikimedia Commons (this website) only hosts media files which can be used for any purpose, including:

 • use in any work, regardless of content
 • creation of derivative works
 • commercial use
 • free distribution

See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on the Wikimedia Commons. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on the Wikimedia Commons: "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.

Please make sure that you only upload works you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial to understanding how the Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions.

In particular, please see Commons:Licensing#Screenshots. LX (talk, contribs) 23:30, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image:I 35W Bridge.svg

Hi,

Could you please clarify the copyright on Image:I 35W Bridge.svg? Who is that telephone company? Did they release it under the GFDL/CC licenses? I don't get it.

Thanks! Kmccoy (talk) (en) (en:talk) 22:13, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

I was about to ask the same. --NE2 22:14, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for fixing the link. :) Kmccoy (talk) (en) (en:talk) 22:25, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

My name is Paul Robinson. The telephone company listed is 'Robinson Telephone Company of the National Capital Area'. So, perhaps now, you can guess where the name came from. It is incorporated in Virginia (corporations are cheaper than LLCs). I am in charge of the company (it's now a non-stock corporation, which means it has no 'owners', however I happen to be both General Manager AND the only member of the Board of Directors). I release all my maps under the company name (for legal and technical reasons). So it is reasonable for me to say it is my own work, since I am the person who created the map even though it is owned by the company, e.g. in a form of 'work for hire' if you will. If you notice on the image, there is a logo that specifically says it was released under both licenses (which is why I put it there). Rfc1394 09:33, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

Watermark != copyright. By releasing your image under those licenses you allow it to be freely edited, which includes removing watermarks. The image is still under copyright, it is just not watermarked on the image. If you read wikipedia's image use policy it specifically states images should not be watermarked. "Also, user-created images may not be watermarked, distorted, have any credits in the image itself or anything else that would hamper their free use, unless, of course, the image is intended to demonstrate watermarking, distortion etc. and is used in the related article. All photo credit should be in a summary on the image description page." -Ravedave 14:27, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
Hi Rfc1394, I made a change to the picture because Google Map shows that 4th street (the bottom crossing of 35W in this picture) actually passes under the freeway. I haven't upload it yet, since I want to get your opinion first. If you agree, I will upload a new version of the file. Thanks. Chrishomingtang 17:57, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

Actually when I upload it, there is something wrong with the file. So I revert it. Chris! my talk 19:11, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Nelson_River_Bipole_HVDC_Anchor_Pylon.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-3.0 to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Siebrand 16:50, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

This image appears to be damaged. It's over a year old, so I don't remember what it was from. I can't see the image so I can't determine if it's one of mine, or something I have permission for, or it may very well be from a public domain source like a U.S. Government agency. Since I can't see the image it's really not fixable, so it may be deleted at any time. I have changed the message on the image to mark it for deletion. Rfc1394 22:17, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Nuvola

Hi there, I've noticed a lot of the images you made, you uploaded with "Nuvola" as part of the name. These image don't really have anything to do with the Nuvola icon set originally designed by David Vignoni. I'm aware of the current effort to expand this icon set with projects like Commons:Project Nuvola 2.0+, but unless I'm terribly mistaken, I thought the goal was to make new icons with the Nuvola style. To quote the project's description page: "WikiProject Nuvola 2.0+ is a project to make new icons that will fit stylistically into David Vignoni’s Nuvola icon set" Your contributions, while greatly appreciated, do not really belong in this collection, and by naming them "Nuvola", you may be confusing and/or misleading people on what Nuvola means. To help illustrate what I mean, here's three "nuvola" icons you made and three original Nuvola icons.

Nuvola dryer.svg Nuvola recliner.svg Corn flakes box.svg Nuvola apps edu science.png Nuvola apps atlantik.png Nuvola apps filetypes.png

As you can see, these two styles have nothing to do with each other. I mean, you have every right to name them what you want, but maybe you can explain to me why you are using "Nuvola" in your names and why you are adding them to the project's page. Thanks. Rocket000 19:50, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

Hello Rfc1394!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Commons images are used by editors on many projects in many languages. Each image is put into categories. This helps other editors find them. Please add categories to each image you upload.

To add an image to a category, add the following code to the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbit of comets, add the following to the image description page:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories: Astronomy diagrams, Comets.

For further information on categories read Commons:Categories.

The CommonSense Tool often helps you find the best category for your image.

Here is a gallery of your images. Please check that each image has a category. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the help desk. Thank you.
