Blank maps: 1990 and 2000 + Kosovo, Scotland[edit]

Thanks for Annoatating my uploads of Image:BlankMap-World-2000.png and Image:BlankMap-World-1990.png! It really brings order to chaos. Also, since Serbia has held their elections and the UN is prepared to announce their plan for Kosovo, I have updated blank maps ready for whatever the outcome is. I also plan on doing blank mps with Scotland on them as well later this year if the SNP wins the elections to Holyrood, if not, then no. Hoshie 04:16, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

On second thought, I've decided to wait to do blank maps for Scotland, since i'm not entirely sure the SNP will win, or if they win, a referendum will even be held. Two other map things:
1) St.-Martin and St.-Barthelemy voted in 2003 to become overseas collectivities of France. After four years, this proposal will happen by spring. Because of this, I have an updated version of Image:BlankMap-World-v6.png ready once ISO assigns codes to these islands. On 1 July, the Netherlands Antilles will cease to exist. Three of the islands will become apart of the Netherlands (think French Guiana); the other two, Curacao and Sint Maarten, will have the same status as Aruba. Since they are on the map already, IMHO - no update is needed.
2) Until 2000 (when an agreement was signed), the boundry between [N and S] Yemen and Saudi Arabia did not exist. on the blank maps from 1970 to 2000, i've marked the boundry with a shade of grey that doesn't blend in the darker gray. I hope this is ok. Hoshie 08:03, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
I've uploaded the maps from the 70's to 1993 with no boundary between Saudi and Yemen. I hope you like them. Also, i'm going to add the Neutral Zones to the WWII map. Also I plan on putting Ifni (Spanish enclave) on the pre 1969 maps as well. As for the Yemen thing, here are the sources: CIA map of Yemen from 1999, and CIA map of the Mid-East from 1976. Hoshie 09:47, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

Canal Zone[edit]

I have added the Canal Zone for the 1921 and 1957-1970 maps. I have also added a note to the talk page of the 1985 map about the end of the Iraq/Saudi Arabia Neutral Zone. It would also nice to have maps for the turn of the century and the late 1940's-1956. The ends of the Saudi-Iraqi N.Z., the Canal Zone, and Ifni are noted on the description pages as well. Hoshie 05:51, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

A couple of maps[edit]

Astrokey, I have to apologise that I inadvertently uploaded Image:Australia_1838.jpg and Image:Australia_1916_western_australia.jpg without noticing that you already had. Both sources are identical and so hopefully no harm was done. Sorry anyway. Moondyne 13:52, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

The funny think is that I'm almost certain that I didn't get a message warning me I was about to overwrite a file. I can only assume I had my eyes closed when that popped up and I pressed "Save anyway". Moondyne 22:43, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

Image:Antarctica territorial claims.png[edit]

I have made some mild fixes to this map. You had the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man shaded in red with the rest of the UK; this isn't correct. The CIA Factbook says: Guernsey is a British crown dependency, but is not part of the UK. [1] (The line is the same for Jersey and the Isle of Man). I have also shaded Guadeloupe, Martinique, & Reunion in blue with French Guiana since they are a part of France as well. Hoshie 03:39, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Please update your map[edit]

Your map in the List of countries by GDP (PPP) per capita of Wikipedia - should be updated, according to the new 2006 figures. I've added an "update" message - at the top of the the article. This message should be deleted once you update your map. 80.230.2.240 00:06, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

Holy Roman Empire 1648.svg[edit]

Just so you know, I think this is the best map of any kind I have ever seen in my life. Well done. It's perfect, and the description page should be set in gold and framed in the offices of Wikimedia. It is what vector graphics were designed for. You officially go on my list of most admired Commonists. I'm about to nominate it as a featured picture on Wikipedia. — Vanderdeckenξφ 14:23, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

Hello[edit]

Regarding the map in the List of countries by GDP (PPP) per capita of Wikipedia: Sorry for a temporary confusion. Some days ago I really left you a message here, as you correctly indicated in my discussion page of wikipedia. I would be happy to listen to your opinion about the problem of leaving the map as it is now in the article List of countries by GDP (PPP) per capita. I think this map can't stay in the article, because the List of countries by GDP (PPP) per capita refers to 2006 figures, and the map (though updated) refers to 2005 figures. The other alternative is to edit another map which will represent 2006 figures. What do you think? Eliko.

Hello Astrokey,

Would you be so kind as to give me permission to update the abovementioned image, as it is more than a year old? If not, please think about making the necessary updates yourself.

Australian exploration maps[edit]

I've just nominated a heap of maps for deletion because they are basically encarta images with lines on top; you're probably familiar with these; I was hoping that you could add making new versions of them to your to do list since they're highly informative, but the copyright problems are obvious with the current versions. Thanks. --Peta 03:27, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

Need your name for attribution[edit]

Hello, I am publishing one of your maps and am required by the GFDL to give you attribution, but I do not know your name. Could you please tell me so that I can fulfill the requirements of the license? --Munchkinguy 01:04, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

Alright, but it seems to defeat the purpose of an attribution license if the creator of a copyrighted work insists on not having their name associated with that work. --Munchkinguy 00:24, 9 June 2007 (UTC)

Holy Roman Empire Map[edit]

I'm sure I won't be the first person to thank you for producing this fantastic map. I'm trying to use this in ArcGIS, and was wondering if the version online is the most complete available - or do you have a local version based on polygons rather than lines?

Also, any guess as to the projection? Some kind of conic, but unfortunately the original source (or at least the 1970s edition in my library) doesn't include any information about projections. I can try to find it by brute force, but I figured it might be quicker to see if someone had already figured it out... :p

Anyways, thanks again!

Omeo map[edit]

Hi there,

I notice the map of Omeo you uploaded is incorrectly spelt as 'Omco' in the image title, file history and possibly in the map itself - although the writing is small so it's hard to tell. The wikipedia page it links to is also misspelt. I am referring to the file 3.

I'm a little new to Wikipedia (and just signed up to Wikimedia today) so I'm not really sure how to go about correcting the image title.

Please feel free to mention on my talk page anything I may have missed and whether you can fix this (fairly minor) spelling error!

Thanks

I am slowly but surely creating all the Queensland county articles, and I'd like to have a locator map for each one if possible. The current version is great, and with my trusty copy of Photoshop I've been able to fake it, but it would be nice to do them "properly" if I can. Thanks! Lankiveil (talk) 05:18, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

Australia history.gif[edit]

I like the Australia history.gif file, and I have used it on another language Wikipedia. Now though .gif files are not well supported; it appears fuzzy.

I am no wizard with animated files. If you know of a way to do a version of file in a better supported format that would be good.

Hello, Roke!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Licensing Exception for BlankMap-USA-states-Canada-provinces.png[edit]

Hello Roke!

I'd like to use an SVG map created by Lokal Profil in an application I'm assembling for my small start-up company. I believe it is a derivative work of your map, BlankMap-USA-states-Canada-provinces.png.

I'm happy to credit you guys and Wikimedia Commons in my application, but I would like to (eventually) make this application available as a commercial offering. I believe I would need both of you to agree to an exception to the 'share-alike' provisions of the CC-BY-SA license, or for you to allow me use of this image under a separate non-exclusive commercial license.

Lokal has agreed to an exception pending your approval.

In case you're interested, the application I'm building is a data analysis tool for electric utilities. One of the features we've designed renders a thematic map based on the data set the user is looking at (e.g. total smart meters per state/province). At present, the plan is to make the basic features of our application publicly available. Longer term we would be looking to offer a "premium edition" for profit.

I'm a bit of a "starving entrepreneur" at the moment, but I could offer you some small amount of compensation for your efforts. Perhaps more interestingly, if the application takes off I may need similar regional maps for other parts of the world.

Please let me know your thoughts and how we may best get in touch.

(contact by email)

Regards,

---jmh (talk) 06:19, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

Fine by me. It was originally GNU and share alike anyway. --Roke 09:34, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

Thanks! Let me at least hook you up with a little something for your effort. I'd like to credit you in our application, too. Reply privately via my email and we'll work out the details.

Victoria Local Government Areas.svg - LGA names as path ids?[edit]

Great work on this map, much better than the State Government has done.

I am trying to use your map as abasis for plotting council-level data, but unfortunately the path id names are number rather than the LGA names - is there any (easy) way to correct this? Thanks.

Colonisation maps[edit]

Hi,

I noticed you have created maps of colonization of the great powers and created individual stills throughout history of all of them controling the world such as this one and would like help. I am trying to created a detailed motion map of the Spanish Empire and its claims and I need good sources of information. I am having trouble getting information on how they got to the interior and when they breeched as far as they did at certain points. Wikipedia is not being very helpful as they only list a few forts or cities and their foundation or saying that so-and-so sailed here and there without actually telling me what masses they claimed. This would be much appriciated!

If you can't help me can you lead me to a Wikipedian who could?

(Please answer question here.) Maps & Lucy (talk)

Actually Andrei nacu was the creator of the animation those were from, they are stills of that image. I don't know much about the Spanish empire, you might also want to ask The Red Hat of Pat Ferrick who has made some maps of colonial empires. Regards, --Roke 01:08, 2 February 2010 (UTC)

World Rail Gauge Map[edit]

I was wondering if it would be possible to get a table containing the global rail gauge information. I would like to recreate this map with a GIS for my rail transportation page: http://people.hofstra.edu/geotrans/eng/ch3en/conc3en/ch3c3en.html The information is obviously available at the source (CIA world facts) but converting this information into a table is time consuming, particularly since it has already been done. I would provide attribution. NOTE: I was able to recreate the dataset from the CIA World Fact book which is quite detailed. map error in your pacific-centered map[edit]

at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pacific_centric_no_colonies_blank_world.png I noticed that the most recent version has changed the projection from Robinson to equi-rectangular. However, this new version is not accurately adjusted. I can tell because the anti-meridian (180 degrees longitude) is supposed to border the island of Vanua Levu in Oceania, and then run north and cut East Russia at the west border of the Gulf of Anydr as well as Wrangel Island.

An explanatory screen shot is here: http://img686.imageshack.us/img686/4742/maperrorss.png Red arrows point to where the anti-meridian should border, but as you can see they do not align, and one even cuts the north island of New Zealand, which it should not. Also notice the Alaska-Canada border, which is slanted, not vertical.

Please let me know if you can find the problem, and if you can put up an accurate map asap, because I really like this one.

Use of world map[edit]

Dear Roke, I would like to use the large world map 4500 x 2234 px with filename "A_large_blank_world_map_with_oceans_marked_in_blue" that you modified on 10 Nov 2005, or a similar version. I am hoping to use it for distribution maps for a book I am producing. I particularly want the version with bold country outlines please. Please advise about licensing and attribution - exactly what should I state in my book? Is this the most current version available? Your help is much appreciated. Thank you, John C.

Hi, could you provide me with sources of the maps you used to make the animated map of World War I?[edit]

Hi, I saw your animated map of World War I and was particularly impressed by your inclusion of the frontlines in Africa during the war. I myself am attempting to create larger versions of maps for the World War I period and would greatly appreciate if you could provide either the images or the sources of the frontlines in World War I, particularly for Africa, the Middle East, and Asia (such as German New Guinea, etc).--R-41 (talk) 02:02, 28 June 2011 (UTC)

Hi Roke. I'm planning to re-use the image provided in http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BlankMap-World-1866.png#globalusage and would like to know about licensing and attribution. There are two licenses i.e, GNU FDL nad Creative Commons Attribution Share alike. Which one do I comply with? Please advise. Thanks Sunita

request[edit]

Hey Roke,

I love your work with the world maps. I currently am working on Muammar Gaddafi and I would love to make a map of places he's visited, warred with, and tried to merge with. I don't have any idea how to do it, and all I need is someone to help put the nations on a blank map. Again, I have all the nations, the sources, and the info. I am willing to give you a barnstar for your hard work. I absolutely have to thank you for your hard work here on wikipedia. Please contact me on my talk page (on the english wikipedia) and I will send you the list of countries. Thanks so much!

Sincerely,

Thank you for uploading File:Bevölkerungsdichte Nigerischer Bundesstaaten english.PNG!

Did you know that the SVG format is often the best alternative for this type of image? Scalable Vector Graphics have a lot of advantages: They scale better, the file size is usually smaller, and they are easier to modify and translate, helping Wikimedia to distribute knowledge to all of the world. A lot of modern programs support SVG export, though the result is not always what you may expect. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask me, a member of the Graphic Lab, or the Graphics village pump. If this is not the first time you receive this message, feel free to delete it. Uploading images in SVG format isn't mandatory, but it would help. Thanks, and happy editing!

I have a user on Wikipedia English requesting an update to your map.

"The countries with more than one capital at present (in red), need to add Swaziland. In the countries with more than one capital in the past (in light red) need to add Germany and Libya, and would have to change Philippines and the former Serbia and Montenegro."

Could you please update it? I'm not good at PNGs, just SVG maps. Fry1989 eh? 19:54, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the OTRS system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. (You can get a list of all your uploaded files using the Gallery tool.) Some baklava for you![edit]

Baklava - Turkish special, 80-ply.JPEG hello,

ok, i don't know how things work here. but as soon as i saw the route on the "five weeks in a baloon" page, i wanted to send my appreciations to you (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/62/Five_Weeks_in_a_Balloon.jpg). i was thinking of mapping the route and just didn't know how. but as i saw your map, i understood there was no need for such a thing. i am curious about which map you used and how you drew the route where no information had been given. and... have you ever thought of mapping the route on google maps? :-)

one thing more: do you have a higher resolution of the route? i am thinking of re-reading the book and i would be very pleased if there was a printed version of the map.

thank you for your work. have a good day :-) Ganalpdo (talk) 09:26, 12 May 2013 (UTC)

File:Commonwealth games 1970 medal winners.PNG[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Europe 1490.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag.

(You can get a list of all your uploaded files using the Gallery tool.)
