First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|correct name}}
  • For more information read the full deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Dear Rootology,

Thank you for voting in my request for adminship, which passed with 25 support, 4 oppose, and 3 neutral. I'm honoured that the community have granted me the administrative tools. If there is anything, then do not hesitate to ask me.

Thank you for the nomination Rocket, it wouldn't have been possible otherwise. Kanonkas(talk)

FlickrReview Fails & Speedy[edit]

Just for the record - you don't need to {{Speedy}} flickr images that have failed review. They get added to a category for to be reviewed and eventually deleted. I know some have been hanging out for a long time ... and I am working on fixing that. --ShakataGaNai Talk 07:04, 15 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Rootology. When Flickreviewing images, please make sure that the uploaded images from Flickr to Wikimedia Commons are the original high resolution. The above mentioned image is so beautiful that it's a shame not to upload the 2048 x 1536 pixel version one as it is much more useful for other Wikimedia projects. Please check your previous Flickrreviews to make sure that the original images are present. For more info please see Quality and description and FAQ sections. --Kimse (talk) 06:04, 28 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I got it, I totally missed that--I usually do check for the bigger ones. :) I'll go back through my approvals to make sure I didn't miss any others. And yes, that one IS gorgeous! rootology (T) 05:39, 29 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Resized Images?[edit]

Hello Rootology,
Thank you for reviewing my Images : (Kobe Bryant Profile cc-by-sa-2.0) & (Vancouver Attribution 2.0 Generic), However I noticed that both my images where resized or re-uploaded.

  • My Kobe pic was originally 1,320×1,227 (747 KB) & it was resized to 2,048×1,365 (242 KB).
  • The Vancouver image was 1,083×121 (128 KB) that was changed to 8,337×1,585 (2.2 MB).

Both Images had been cropped to improve their appearance, which is allowed under their perspective licenses (Derivative works).
On the Kobe Picture I had taken out the right side, which was mostly empty space and made the picture seem off balance. I wanted the image to be more square so that it would look better on the Kobe Bryant article located at the Main Wiki Page.
The Second image was modified so that only the city and the skyline were displayed (the sand was removed) : To narrow the page and make it look better.
Could you please get back to me on this. Leave a Message on my talk page located at the Main Wiki. -- $user log Leave me a message :) 05:24, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'll put this on both this page and your Wikipedia one. I agree, on the Kobe one--the cropped does look better on that file. For the Vancouver one, I split the difference and cropped how you had it, but left it at the larger, richer size. On those wide panoramic shots (to me at least) the great value is seeing the skyline in rich detail, which the original resize took away. What do you think of the modified version here? rootology (T) 06:18, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, thanks for getting back to me about the images. After looking it over, I think you make a good argument--the detail was lost in the Vancouver pic I uploaded and it was too small to see the skyline properly. Your new crop looks good :) -- $user log Talk 23:55, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rootology, congratulations! You now have the rights of administrator on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and Commons:Deletion requests), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons @ irc.freenode.net. Also consider joining #wikimedia-admin, the cross-wiki coordination channel for Wikimedia administrators. Any member of the channel can invite you in temporarily, but you need an invite exemption from a channel operator to get in whenever you want. Please come to #wikimedia and ask for an invite. Any admin from any project is welcome.

You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references....

"Princess_Victoria_Memorial_Portpatrick.jpg"[edit]

Hi, you deleted the above image from MV Princess Victoria. I've put at least 8 images into that article today and I've managed to get things right on them all bar this one- what did I do wrong? The Thunderer (talk) 17:34, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! That particular one came from this Flickr page, where the author has it tagged "all rights reserved" and fully copyrighted, so we can't use it here. If you check out the licensing page, there's a wide array of licenses on flickr we can use, but that one image falls shy. If you can get the flickr owner to change it over to a license, say, CC-BY-SA, we can use it. The important thing is it has to be free for any possible re-use, of any type at all, even commercial. rootology (T) 03:53, 3 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted F-1_engine_firing.jpg[edit]

You deleted this image from F-1 (rocket engine). It was a non-copyrighted NASA image. What is needed to restore the image so it won't be deleted again? Joema (talk) 13:45, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Joema, it appears there was no source listed on the original image, which was required on both commons and back on Wikipedia--images generally slide without that for quite some time, until someone "tags" it as missing that requirement, and then an admin can delete it within seven days. Simply putting down "NASA" as the source isn't enough, since the photo may not be owned by them... for web images like this we'd need the source URL/address where it came from to verify. Do you happen to recall what that was? If we have it I can restore it or any other admin can, its no problem. rootology (T) 13:54, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing wrong here. Nothing to "get" either -- I am curious that a simple question can be perceived to be so complicated. If it is more complicated than either a "yes" or a "no" can answer (in your mind) then perhaps the answer is yes and you need something to do to more simply feel productive and to have an idea about somethng productive to do tomorrow in addition to the knowing of how to answer a simple question. -- carol (talk) 01:31, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Flickr help[edit]

Rootology, I'm trying to upload this carnation iamge [1] from Flickr but it's not letting me. It claims that I need to "The source must be a URL pointing to the image description at Flickr." [2] Seriously, I don't know what's happening and it's aggravating me. Could you fix what's wrong with the way I've done it? Thanks. hbdragon88 (talk) 17:08, 16 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Heya! Try this; it's how I do it for flickr images (someone may have a more direct method, but I prefer to do it by hand for more control and I don't like botting it). Start at this URL, from the general Upload page: http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Upload&uselang=fromflickr . From there, open the "flinfo tool" that is linked on the page. It's at http://wikipedia.ramselehof.de/flinfo.php . See the URL of your carnation flickr image? http://flickr.com/photos/aidanmorgan/2572772231/ ? You want that 2572772231 string. Paste that into the flinfo tool ID field, and hit the "Get flickr info" button. All that text is what I pop into the Summary field on that upload form. Next, I go back to the flickr image itself. Click on the All sizes button, which I linked here. I always download the "biggest" image, which is this one, and save it to my PC. That's what I upload, after. :) The Licensing looks good here too, so a flickr reviewer would then pass that, and you or someone else could fine-tine the categories and arrangements later. Let me know if that works--about to head out of the house in 30 minutes or so, but I'll be around tonight if you get stuck. You can try IRC too if my steps here don't work out; the #wikimedia-commons IRC crew is super helpful and nice. rootology (T) 17:49, 16 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mistaken deletion[edit]

Hi Rootology. You seem to have mistakenly deleted an image which I uploaded via FlickrLickr. Image:A_few_thousand_people_on_bikes.jpg was released under the Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 License by Stewart Butterfield (founder of Flickr). The FlickrLickr tool would not have allowed it to be uploaded unless it had been under the correct license. Considering Creative Commons licenses are non-revocable, it's irrelevant that Stewart has since deleted the image on Flickr, so there's no reason to delete it from Commons. Good point--I restored it. Did you see that flickr not found cat I posted on the admin board? We may want to change or modify that, to avoid any confusion in the future. rootology (T) 20:04, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
