File wrongly nominated for deletion

Hi, Saibo, other user nominated the file File:Basile_1966rac.jpg for deletion, which I consider incorrect because the picture was published in 1966 and therefore copyright does not apply. I gave my reasons at the nomination page Commons:Deletion_requests/File:Basile_1966rac.jpg so I thought you could help to close the discussion if possible. Best. Fma12 (talk) 06:39, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

Please wait until someone closes it. And this usually doesn't happen until the discussion has come to and end / a conclusion. Please discuss and just wait. A DR on a file is nothing bad. Wish you a successful 2012! --Saibo (Δ) 18:31, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for your comment. I share your opinion because I don't want to discuss further with a person who has not read the Law 11.723 but tags files anyway. I'm sure enough that the file is free and able to be uploaded to commons, so I will let things happen. Thanks again and happy 2012 !! Best, Fma12 (talk) 23:45, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

Template:User talk

Hi! Please, could you add the German language to this template User talk? Thanks a lot and best regards! Angelus (talk) 17:47, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi Angelus! Done. However, I do not see much use in such a bloated general template with much redundant (and not useful to most people) text. Btw: Did you know Template:Requested_translations? You can request translations there. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 03:12, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
No, I wasn't aware of the existence of this page! Thank you very much! :-D Best regards. --Angelus (talk) 15:07, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

Centralized discussion: re

Siehe (hm, Ironie...?) en:Request for Comments. Rd232 (talk) 01:13, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Also de-n, aber eigentlich doch eher de-2?
de-2 ... aua. RFC war abgesprochen bei Commons:VPR#Requests_for_comment.2FUser_conduct. Rd232 (talk) 01:26, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
Hehe, Spaß muss sein. Nagut, dann de-3 ;-) Danke für den Link. "I know some users are not keen on using en.wp as a model" - Yep, inded.

File:Instrumento musical Kalimba.jpg

Bilderraten Teil 2

Rapskuchenpellets

Oder purgt du was anderes?
;-) Also ich weiß ja nich … --Geitost diskusjon 15:43, 11 January 2012 (UTC)

I Volunteer!

Saibo - Yes, I volunteer for the Graphic Lab when it gets so bad you need code written de novo. I would guess that most all of the animations require code. Feel free to give me a job on my Talk Page. From my Users Page, you should be able to see topics that I can handle. Doug youvan (talk) 16:45, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi Doug, yes, very nice! I had a look at Commons:Picture requests but couldn't find animation requests. There are some animation requests at meta:Philip_Greenspun_illustration_project/Requests - but I do not know if those are of the kind you can do. Also I do not know if they have been fulfilled in the meantime. I am sorry, I do not want to start another project (looking for tasks for you) - I am quite busy. If you get no replies at Commons:Graphics_village_pump#Happy_to_Help_Out_on_Custom_Programs_-_especially_for_Pseudocolor then post to COM:VP or maybe better at en:Wikipedia:Village_pump_(idea_lab) (I am sure we could need animations somewhere) - but since there are all kinds of users (not just "nerds") a short description of what you can do would be helpful. Hope this has helped a bit at least. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 17:10, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

Warum wird so was hier trotzdem mehrfach gelöscht?

Thank you

Hi Saibo, I just wanted to tell you that you were right, I should have taken more time to discuss my review plan and its implementation before implementing it. I also want you to know that I greatly value European culture and the many beautiful works that they have produced, and I greatly regret the Supreme Court's recent decision and its deleterious effect on our mission. I really hope once the WMF has given their position, we can strive to find the best way to preserve as many works as possible. Thank you for contributing to the discussion and for reminding me not to rush. Dcoetzee (talk) 00:14, 22 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi Dcoetzee, thanks for your message and your bits of understanding at last. I hope we will manage to survive as a community and not get into a nuclear war with the public domain severely damaged and a broken Commons. :-) --Saibo (Δ) 19:45, 22 January 2012 (UTC)

Question of Commons talk:Licensing

Ok, I'll do it. But can you please explain why? As I can read, there are other questions & answers on that page regarding copyright. LoStrangolatore (talk) 02:01, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

Oh, sorry if that wasn't clear - see on top of the Commons talk:Licensing page. And, yes, there are some other also misplaced questions. COM:VPC is not very old - so people are not used to it. Do you have an improvement idea? Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 02:27, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

Old version file mover (2)

Hi Saibo. I'm not sure but I think it was you who suggested the bot interface with CommonsHelper. It now does, hopefully more to your liking. Or did you want it to make the upload directly? Cheers. Magog the Ogre (talk) 02:08, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

Deutsch) bist. Viele Grüße --Saibo (Δ) 16:10, 28 January 2012 (UTC)

File:Qualified countires to African Cup of Nations 2012.png

Can you see please the file of Qualified african countires, Morocco's map is not right because Republic of Western Sahara contested yet. Greetings. --Faycal.09 (talk) 18:41, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi again, how can I help you? I do not understand your request. Regards --Saibo (Δ) 18:06, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for your answer, the file is about africa geo political map. The problem is that there is a user who associate Western Sahara Republic to Morocco, however United Nations don't recognise that so Morocco map is representing without Western Sahara Rep. We can see exemples of Africa Cup of Nations maps here. Hope that you see the file. Thank you. --Faycal.09 (talk) 19:59, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
Okay, I understand. Please do not do further reverts at this file - I would need to protect it otherwise (edit war). We have this problem often at maps. Best solution is to make two versions and let the projects decide which one they like to use. Or is there a official map from the football organization which these maps are about? Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 21:43, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for your intervention. I stopped revert of the file. I fear when I put another file in 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, he will revert or he will put again this file. I prefere that it's the administrator who do that. Greetings. --Faycal.09 (talk) 00:57, 30 January 2012 (UTC)

File:SquirrelZipolite2.JPG

--Geitost diskusjon 02:50, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi Geitost! Also ich würde sagen: 180° drehen.
Nur: Was hängt dann da alles so komisch herunter? ;-) --Geitost diskusjon 03:25, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
"Wendeln" Squirrels?
User_talk:AlejandroLinaresGarcia#File:SquirrelZipolite2.JPG_-_orientation.3F --Saibo (Δ) 03:47, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

Lakhdar Belloumi

Hi Saibo, the article page of Lakhdar Belloumi was deleted on 14 January 2012 first because only one picture. I created again the article with 4 pictures "one picture was deleted :-)" however the 3 pictures are legal sure (pic1, pic2, pic 3). However The article was deleted again on 30 January 2012 and the pic 3 was proposed for deletion without reason! Can you see that please. Greetings. --Faycal.09 (talk) 18:05, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

At all pictures you wrote that you are the photographer - is that true? Please provide where you got the images from (source) and who is the photographer (author). Put in "unknown" if you don't know the photographer. After we know the situation of the images we can talk about the gallery page.
Please also just reply at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Lakhdar Belloumi (champion d'Algérie 1984 - GC Mascara).jpg and tell where you got the image from. Note that we need a publication date for the PD-Algeria copyright tag. --Saibo (Δ) 17:25, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
I add a note to the discuss page. I put the picture in Wikimedia on 2010, I have this picture it's more then 15 years. Now I don't remember really a person who gives me the pic and because I have the pic it's more then 15 years, for me I'm like the author, you can see my explain on the discuss page please. Thank you. --Faycal.09 (talk) 18:33, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
The deletion request is closed now. I have made some changes to the file's page - please especially look at source and author field.
Ragarding the gallery page: We already have Category:Lakhdar Belloumi do you think it is useful to have a gallery page in addition? --Saibo (Δ) 18:39, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
Thank you much for your contribution. I ha performed my knowledge of how to use files in Wikimedia these last days because of you. About Lakhdar Belloumi Article page, it's not necessary right, maybe on future if it seems to have many pictures of belloumi :-) Thank you. --Faycal.09 (talk) 19:47, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
Nice to hear that my effort to explain are worth it! :-) Please make source and author corrections to pic1 and pic2. If you are not the photographer the author/source and license is wrong. Then I can undelete the gallery page if you want so. Galleries are only better than category pages if there are descriptions and maybe even translation like it is done at Plaridel Airport (German and English). --Saibo (Δ) 18:53, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
That's all right I changed picture 1 and 2, I will try to perform the pictures uploaded by me on future. Thank you. --Faycal.09 (talk) 20:11, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
I made some small fixes to pic1. However, pic2 does not seem possible to keep here. As you can see on the file page of pic1 photos need to be published before 1987 in Algeria to be public domain. But pic2 is from 1988 at the earliest. Please see Commons:Licensing#Algeria and Commons:Copyright tags#Algeria. Here is the gallery again: Lakhdar Belloumi. Au revoir --Saibo (Δ) 21:48, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for ameliorating the pic 1, what about the pic 2 yes it's in 1988 and because this I don't put the same license. However I taked this picture from the official website of the club, (I'm member of the site).
Thank you much for recreating the article Lakhdar Belloumi. Au revoir, merci (thank you). --Faycal.09 (talk) 00:25, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
Regarding pic2: yes, you had PD-self before - but that can only be put on the file page by the photographer. We would need the written permission from the photographer - otherwise we cannot keep the image since it is not public domain yet. Maybe your club knows who the photographer is? --Saibo (Δ) 00:06, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi Saibo, yes I understand your meaning about the picture 2, I will try to get permission but not sure because difficult to find the photographer however I will try.

How to make a link between pictures

Hi Saibo,

In one of the maps I recently modified, you suggested me to create a new picture file then link it to another one. How shall I do to achieve that? Please, bear with me and would you be son kind to explain to me. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pacific kiribati (talk • contribs) 2012-02-01T14:37:52‎ (UTC)

You can upload a modified version under a new file name and mention the original file's file name in the source field and in the other versions field of both files. Works like this link: File:Qualified countries to African Cup of Nations 2012.png Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 14:43, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

modifications in kiribati's map

Hi, I suggest that a administrator intervene in order to choose a neutral map in topic "african football cup 2012", kiribati's map is not neutral, I've presented all my arguments but kiribati insist in warring edition --Karakizi (talk) 15:37, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi Karakizi, I am an administrator and I have protected all the files about which the group of three users were edit warring. I do not know which version is correct, probably there is no correct version as some people/countries may see it differently. Also Commons is not about editorial choice - that should be done at the Wikipedia projects. If there is dispute about a map it may be the best solution to just make two versions under different file names - then each Wikipedia project can choose which one to use.
Of course it would be better if you three can come to a agreement - please discuss it on the files' talk pages. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 16:10, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

African Map used for African Cup of Nations

from de::de:Spezial:Permanenter Link/99459992#African_Map_used_for_African_Cup_of_Nations

Hi Saibo,

You just blocked my IP hindering me from logging onto Wikimedia. Though I understand your decision for doing so, I just felt I shall explain to you the point of disagreement. What led me to cross the limit of edit warring was my try to fix map of africa and make it look like any other map of africa published on wikipedia. As in one of your messages, you pointed out that you could not figure out which map is correct, among many examples, the following ones show that I was just trying to keep things consistent between the "Football African Cup of Nations" wiki page and the rest of Wikipedia. You can see the following maps found on Wikipedia

Africa (orthographic projection).svg
Map of the African Union with Suspended States.svg
Africa 1971-2000 mean precipitation.png
HDImap spectrum2006 Africa.png

.

Moreover, the maps used for the previous "African cup of nations" like 2010 4, 2008 5, 2006 6, 2004 7, 2002 8 etc

On all the maps of africa, western sahara, though being a disputed territory claimed by both de:Morocco and de:RASD, does appear. User Karakizi kept putting a map where western sahara is totally overlapped by morocco. I know this could be seen as a political argument but not only. Indeed, for the sake of consistency on Wikipedia and because politics shall not be mixed with sports, I felt like I should fix this but for some odd reason he kept spoiling the page in spite of exchanging our arguments.

I am not involved in this political dispute between morocco and western sahara, I just wanted to get things coherent and consistent with the rest of Wikipedia. Karakizi did not want to understand it this way and wanted to emphasize his political agenda.

Understood, I will never change any of the maps anymore. I figured it out being pointless and useless.

Thanks for reading me. Feb. 2012 (CET))

Hi Pacific kiribati, thanks for your message (which I will move to my Commons talk page in three days; note that I took the freedom to move the thumbs to the standard (right) side for a better visibility of the indention). I appreciate that you think about and understand the problems.
As edit wars to not help anybody (except that we two users being busy reverting each other again and again) please upload other versions of maps of which you know that they will be disputed under a new name and, of course, change the file name in the Wikipedia article. If the old version of the map is that "wrong" that it is not useful please nominate it for deletion and it will be deleted if there is community agreement to do so. Do you see problems with that way?
Another downside if that editwars is that the picture in all Wikipedia articles which use it changes every hour - not really useful. Wikipedia editors should be able to rely on the content from Commons to some extent. That happens if files with edit wars are included in articles: "argh. komplett durcheinander geraten alles. nun die Version ohne Westsahara" (English: argh! everything is completely mixed up here. Now the version without Western Sahara).
If you really do not want to mix politics with sports then there should not be maps with country borders - but in a championship of nations that is inherently the case. I understand your thoughts of continuity between maps of A. cup of nations. Let me question that: should it never ever be allowed then to change a political map displaying the nations which take part? In the case of South Sudan this change is/was probably be done.
I ask you to continue your engagement with maps - but, please, just choose another (more productive) way to do so. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 00:58, 9. Feb. 2012 (CET)
Fine, I got it. Fair enough to understand though I do not think South Sudan example was a good example. It's a new state and as a consequence it should appear on all the maps as of July 2011. In my humble opinion, there is a difference between updating a map to reflect a new geographic and political reality and create one misleading readers and being inconsistent with the rest of wikipedia.
About, the comment on the article involved (the complete mess), I had a discussion with the writer Hephaion and we sorted things out.
However, I know it was not productive doing so. As I said before, I will not change anyone else's map anymore. Edit wars are pointless and useless anyway. Feb. 2012 (CET))
Yes, of course SS is not comparable to Mor. and W. Sahara - it just was to show that change can happen (yes, it is quite a different change). Note that I have unblocked you in Commons per this discussion. Have a good day! --Saibo (Δ) 17:19, 9. Feb. 2012 (CET)
Thanks for your work. I guess it's a hard task watching wikipedia and some rules (sometimes felt as hard) must be enforced to calm things down :-) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pacific kiribati (talk • contribs) 2012-02-10T10:02:02‎ (UTC)

User:Skydiver777 a Sockpuppet?

Hi Saibo,

I am writing this message just to warn about a possible sock-puppetry, it's just a hypothesis not a fact. User:Karakazi seems to have become User:Skydiver777. The latter has uploaded in wikimedia exactly the same file before the former got blocked by you 9. Moreover, skydiver writes the same sentences and defends exaclty the same POV as Karakazi and only on the same subjects. This is confusing. Question: Why can't I add or edit my Commons Wikipedia images in Wikipedia English?

Hallo Saibo, I am surprised that just this time, today, here in Philippines, when I add or edit and put my Commons images in Wikipedia English, they do not show up in the articles like: a) [10] and b) [11]. Am I blocked from putting images there? I was not notified by any editor or administrator. Please enlighten me, I am new here. Thanks.--Ramon FVelasquez (talk) 05:37, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

After 2 hours, I think it is ok now, and probably to our or the Wikipedia server error. Cheers.--Ramon FVelasquez (talk) 08:40, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi Ramon! Yes, we have problems with the image display due to server problems since 2 days. You are and were never blocked in en.Wikipedia. All fine! Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 15:19, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

Heilbronn, Altes Rathaus ...

MediaWiki:Sp-contributions-footer-anon

When updating this page, please also be careful to update MediaWiki:Anontalkpagetext. Maybe you could even sync them with a template. Magog the Ogre (talk) 15:48, 17 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi Magog, I did not know that template - and why does it need to be synced? I even do not think the links should be on a talk page - it is a talk page.. ;-) But.. okay - do you want me to adjust these links as well? I think a simple inclusion and "onlyinclude" in the footer would solve the problem. :) --Saibo (Δ) 17:02, 17 February 2012 (UTC)

I don't much care how you do it, but it seems silly to have two different geolocates and two different WHOIS's. Magog the Ogre (talk) 00:20, 18 February 2012 (UTC)

Ah, I know why I never see that message on talk pages: because it is only displayed for English interface. Anyway: I have updated both "templates" at last. Hope everything is working now. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 01:40, 18 February 2012 (UTC)

If it is who I think it is the IPs may well be open proxies. Regards --Herby talk thyme 17:04, 18 February 2012 (UTC)

Fut.Perf. 01:06, 19 February 2012 (UTC)

My talkpage

Please re-protect my talkpage. It was protected for a very strong reason. This is a case of an extremely persistent cross-project vandal harassing me. Just look at the history of my talk pages on other projects to see what happens if they are not kept semi'ed. Fut.Perf. 07:00, 17 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi Future Perfect at Sunrise, in simple wikipedia I cannot write you due to that protection - whyever I am not autoconfirmed there... I really would like to avoid that permanent protection. As I see it the IPs are not fully random - maybe we could make a selective protection only for that IP ranges via abuse filters? Of course you should not get harassed :-( but talk page protection also shouldn't happen. I watch your talk page now and have asked user:Túrelio to comment here. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 15:32, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
Abuse filter might be a useful alternative. Probably needs to include all edits made from the known IP ranges on all pages I recently edited. The vandalism also happens on pages other than my talkpage, so the abuse filter option might actually be an elegant solution. Fut.Perf. 22:17, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
I would have the relevant filter syntax ready if that really needs to be extended to more pages than your talk page - but I think that would really be "heavy". Is that really so bad? The problem is that if it is extended to all pages it surely would create false positives which should really not happen. False positives are not that if it is just your talk page. Let's wait what Turelio means. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 22:32, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
Funny, all three are de-native speakers and we talk :en.

Commons:Requests for comment/galleries

I've moved your comment to the talk page after expanding the page. I hope you're OK with that, and that the purpose of the RFC has become clearer. Further meta-discussion should be on the talk page, if you've anything to add. Thanks for your input. Rd232 (talk) 11:48, 19 February 2012 (UTC)

Not really since others who only read the front page may have the same problem. --Saibo (Δ) 13:16, 19 February 2012 (UTC)
OK, well, if you want to start a new section on the main page and move the talk-page exchange there, I won't oppose that (though I don't think it would particularly help). What would you do differently with the discussion? You see what I'm trying to do, don't you? Rd232 (talk) 18:27, 19 February 2012 (UTC)
No, re-organizing discussions is your self-chosen "job" ;) (I am sure you do it in the very best intent - so please don't get me wrong). --Saibo (Δ) 18:42, 19 February 2012 (UTC)
OK... :) Well, your comments over there are disagreeing with the RFC - that's what I was getting at with the last two sentences above (I guess that wasn't clear). So what would you do differently with the discussion that is the subject of the RFC? Rd232 (talk) 18:52, 19 February 2012 (UTC)
I am not that interested in the subject - and problems and suggested changes to policy/guideline pages were not suggested. So I leave it to those who like to discuss about. What I saw is a big fat banner - tend to regard that as ugly to have it on all file pages (if that is the proposal). Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 19:27, 19 February 2012 (UTC)

To save you from giving an answer (and since babel and admin box are in fact useful): Better now? --Saibo (Δ) 23:55, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
Yes, better, thanks. However, somebody should point out (and I'm not sure anyone has) that your repeated accusations of bad faith and even "vandalism" against Dcoetzee were quite extraordinary to see coming from admin. You certainly know better, and no amount of frustration with the US law and WMF policy on respecting it and users' attempts to deal with that justifies it. I trust you will reflect on this, if not now, then at some point in the future when things are less heated. Rd232 (talk) 00:22, 23 January 2012 (UTC)
Yes, climate is indeed heated (therefore my reference to nuclear war). Flagged bot actions without community agreement (which on top also had technical and logical errors) don't really contribute to a de-escalation. So since I am not quite sure regarding the good faith of Dcoetzee I do not see that naming his yesterday's actions vandalism is fully wrong (partly, yes, I agree, but → ) - exaggeration of actions on one side could lead to exaggeration of actions on the other side. Sad that I have to talk of "sides" not only in the war against humans (naked humans to be precise) but also in the manifesting new URAAAAaaah! war initiated with much effort and enthusiasm by Dcoetzee. --Saibo (Δ) 01:16, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

Jorm (WMF)

You shouldn't really be edit-warring with a user over removing material from their talkpage. I'm sorry if I'm partly responsible for any confusion: the page COM:ARCHIVE is part of (Commons:Talk page guidelines) does note, further down, that Others delete comments after they have responded to them (but this practice is no longer recommended - archiving is preferred). Deleting is bad practice, and it's disappointing to see a WMF user do it, but it's permitted. If you have any suggestions on how to clarify the page, please let me know or post on the guideline talk page. (Like other pages, the page is a bad mixture of guideline and help page, which contributes to confusion. :( ) Rd232 (talk) 00:31, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for your info! No, I think the COM:ARCHIVE page is okay.
The discussion he removed was still active - just now linked at COM:VPC (I used a permanent link but usually a normal wiki link should have done - if he didn't remove the contents fully). I just revert a bit back and forth - could have been that he didn't read the link to COM:ARCHIVE the first time. Guidelines are not there to be fully ignored - but yes - I know it is not policy. And even if, it would not be worth to make a big drama out of it in his case - different for copyvio uploaders. There it is more annoying if they delete notices as the give a quick info for any later copyvio "hunters" of the user's past.
With regards to Jorm, don't know what has bitten him. Maybe he is usually the boss - or thinks he is of the wiki since he is "senior blafoo programmersoftware architect" (or something) and cannot deal with notices of mistakes?
Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 00:59, 23 January 2012 (UTC)
Yes, the lack of responsiveness there is at least as disappointing as the original copyright mistakes. If even WMF users don't understand or respect copyright... :( Rd232 (talk) 01:07, 23 January 2012 (UTC)
Even Sue Gardner does not know, that "oh, it was made by a friend of mine" and "how? not anybody can give away copyrights?" is plain WRONG: [13] & [14] (who is this Ms Young?) (yeah, you know, Mario Testino happens to be a friend of mine and says that my upload is okay. ;) ) Catfisheye (talk) 05:40, 23 January 2012 (UTC)
Oh, yes, of course it is clear for any possible reuser that File:Wikimedia_Foundation_SOPA_Boiler_Room_Meeting.jpg was uploaded (and carefully acquired the free license from the photographer) by the big "boss" of Wikimedia Foundation. I don't see what is wrong here, we have so many uploaders doing that every day (mostly newly registered ones) - that must be right. :-) Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 14:15, 23 January 2012 (UTC) I left Sue a note. --Saibo (Δ) 14:20, 23 January 2012 (UTC) In case someone does not understand the irony: COM:OTRS is the formally required process for uploading works made by other people. --Saibo (Δ) 15:28, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

Help wanted.

Hello again Saibo, and once again sorry for my stupid and wrongful suspicions at the end of a comment. I were both tired and tired of the picture in question. (The "Mellanöl-question" was thow a big political issue during many years.) However I have now a digital version of a picture that my grandfather (on my mothers side) shot of Siegessäule in Berlin prior to Albert Speer had it moved in to Tiergarten. Picture is black/white and the monument and surroundings clearly looks very different from how it looks today. I've read that the monument was moved in 1938. The big problem is that surely cannot state that I'm the author. If a negative exists I don't know. But my mother found the picture among old photos beloning to my uncle. So I've spoken to my uncle (and my mother) and both thinks that it is "a very good idea" if their father's (and my grandfather's) old photo comes to use in Wikipedia. They are familiar with that the picture will be public domain. Although I cannot find any other "easy found" picture of Siegessäule outside der Reichstag with Google I doubt that the picture has an economical value. Besides we (my mother, uncle and myself) do not care if that would be the case. My grandfather lived 1899-1966 and was a bank manager in an southern Sweden office. I have only one little memory of him. Anyway - Do You have any suggestion how to solve this problem ? For instance I have not a clue of what a "copyright tag" is. Very best of reguards Boeing720 (talk) 16:43, 27 January 2012 (UTC)

Hej Boeing720, I did not forget nor did I refuse to answer at your talk page - I just have put it to my ToDo list. ;-) Don't know what's "stupid" at your comment on your talk page. Don't worry!
If you know for sure that your grandfather is the photographer (so he not just bought the photo print somewhere) AND if the person(s) who own the picture's copyrights agree to a free license or public domain then you can upload it. The person(s) who own the copyright are probably your mother and uncle if there are no other heirs or if they came to agreement with the other heirs that the copyright of this photo belongs to them. For images of which you are not the author yourself (and not published in the web by the author) the steps described in COM:OTRS should be followed. That means that the person who owns the copyright should send a email to Wikimedia explaining why the copyright is owned and agreeing to a free license (or public domain). Example text which can be used is available on that page. If your mother/uncle does not write emails then probably you could also send this email on her/his behalf explicitly stating that you discussed the "Declaration of consent for all enquiries" (it explains the license a bit) with her/him. A Swedish version is here: Commons:E-postmallar.
You said "public domain" in your comment and I said "free license or public domain". The difference between "free license" and public domain is that in the former there are restrictions which people who want to use the image have to follow (typically at least attribution) whereas in the latter there are no restrictions for use. Commons and Wikipedia accepts both, freely licensed and public domain content. You can choose what you like more if you want to release an image.
By the way: it is no problem to take photos of public monuments in Germany due to freedom of panorama in Germany (similar to Sweden).
Regarding your question what a "copyright tag": See Commons:Copyright tags. Short answer: for example that is a "copyright tag": . It indicates under which restrictions an image can be used and why it is free. Viele Grüße --Saibo (Δ) 01:01, 28 January 2012 (UTC)
Thank You very much for this good information. I will try to follow Your described link. And the e-mails required. I assume that my grandfathers name (John Nilsson 1899-1966) as (family-album-)photographer can be mentioned somewhere. (This is the only part that we - my mother, uncle and myself - cares about). And we are absolutley sure of that the shot comes from my grandfather due to a lot of other pictures. But only one is Siegessäule prior to 1938 whithout persons in the foreground. I'm not expert but to me the photo must be concidered "good enough". Thanks once again 83.249.32.5 19:41, 28 January 2012 (UTC)
Yes, in every case the photographer's name can be mentioned in the "author" field. If you choose a free license (e.g. ) everyone who uses that image must mention that name (that is one of the requirements of the license). If you choose to put the image into the public domain (PD-author or Cc-zero) then mentioning the author name of the image is not needed for people who use that image (although they may do, of course, as a courtesy). Thanks for your effort to contribute! :-) --Saibo (Δ) 20:08, 28 January 2012 (UTC)
Thank You once again for all this help. It was not easy for me to upload the picture in this way. I couldn't have done it without Your help. (The wizard works fine for "common" uploads, but this was different.) I first send an e-mail and later used Your tag suggestion. I also put the picture in german, swedish and english Wikipedia (article "Siegessäule" in german and swedish - it was called something else in english). In the english Wiki there already was a picture from 1900, but it's a well done painting not a photo. I hope everything is in order. Please do contact me if something isn't in order. Best of reguards Pontus Eriksson, 83.249.35.30 22:33, 29 January 2012 (UTC) (Boeing720)
Hej Pontus Eriksson, nice to hear! :-) Someone has changed the location - where was it? ;-) I have placed an info on the file page indicating that you have sent an email, too (). Everything is fine. I noted that you chose the "custom license" option. That's fine - but you could also have chosen this license directly in the menu. If you do not like the upload wizard for some reason, you could also use the old upload forms. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 22:57, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

Well this wasn't so good after all. I didn't had a clue that a Siegessäule also exists in Munich. I'm so sorry. (However no one reacted on the e-mail yesterday. Of course he picture can be used still. But there are far better pictures of the Munich Siegessäule which has not been moved. The picture has no value for Wikipedia. But eighter the photo must be removed from Commons or the info text re-written. I'll try to change the text. Still thanks thow 83.249.35.30 01:32, 30 January 2012 (UTC)

No problem, really! Just use the edit mode on the image page to correct (please log in before with your username - you are not currently). We can also change the file name if required - just tell me if necessary. The answer to your mail could take some days or even weeks. Only volunteers like you and me answer emails and queues happen. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 01:36, 30 January 2012 (UTC)
I think that everything on Commons is OK, except for the name of the file. With better knowlidge of my grandfathers photo I suggest new name as "Siegessäule Munich". If You can do this for me I would be very greateful. But I really feel bad about this extreme mistake. So also thanks for Your encouragement. I have 8 old passport stamps from the former GDR (in/out of Saßnitz 1981 in/out of Warnemünde 1982 and in/out of Hirschberg both 1981 and 1982) - could this be of any relevant use, do You think ? I doubt it. There is no relevant article as far as I can see. So I have no more photos for the moment. I once again thank You for all Your help and advices. Boeing720 (talk) 13:39, 30 January 2012 (UTC)
As I see it is not even a "Siegessäule", agree? I have made some corrections to the file page (also the correct category). As I see it we did not have such an old photo from this point-of-view - nice!
Passport stamps.. hmm.. I do not know. Also I do not know their copyright status for sure (probably they are public domain - like all highly official works of the German government). That is what I found: searchCategory:Passport stamps of East Germany. Are your stamps different, better? Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 01:32, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

RFC

I tried to play this softly, but this, on top of the original comments I had to deal with, is becoming disruptive. Don't think I'll let you act disruptively because you're an experienced admin here. Rd232 (talk) 01:27, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

You're welcome. --Saibo (Δ) 02:06, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

OK, one more attempt to restore sanity. Commons:Requests for comment/PD review is nearing 30 days. If you agree to avoid in any way disrupting the work that will come out of the RFC, I'll restore your comments, withdraw the block request, close the RFC, and start the project to organise the work. How does that sound? Rd232 (talk) 17:36, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi Rd232, I do not understand what you mean by "is nearing 30 days". Eh, and which "block request"? --Saibo (Δ) 04:26, 3 March 2012 (UTC) Found it: that "block request". --Saibo (Δ) 04:41, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
The RFC was launched on 5 Feb. Today is 3 March. Rd232 (talk) 10:34, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, but I can calculate, too. I mean, why do you tell me that is soon is 30 days old? --Saibo (Δ) 13:53, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
It was context for why I was suggesting closing the RFC (since 30 days is the usual minimum to keep them open). Now, is there really no way you can promise not to disrupt the future URAA/PD review work? Rd232 (talk) 00:57, 4 March 2012 (UTC)
Ah, I do not know this "minimum" or even that RFC get "closed". RFCs are just like topics on VP which are also not "closed". --Saibo (Δ) 15:29, 4 March 2012 (UTC)
This section was archived on a request by: Saibo (Δ) 15:29, 4 March 2012 (UTC)
No, most RFCs are like DRs - they need a conclusion of some sort. But this is not the issue. Can I conclude from your refusal to answer my direct question (plus using section resolved...) that you do plan further disruption? As you might have seen at User talk:Rotatebot#Work, Rotatebot isn't rotating any images. Are you able to do something about this? I put a notice at User talk:Luxo a couple of days ago but never got any reply. --Stefan4 (talk) 14:20, 6 March 2012 (UTC)

Luxo is not really active as you might know - if there are big / urgent problems you need/should write an email. Thanks for letting me know, I did not see that notice since I have not look in my watchlist for about 14 days (due to the 1.19 update and stuff...). I can and will try to restart it. Habsbourg-1700.jpg

Hallo Saibo, wie hast Du Ejaculation without manual stimulating.gif gecroppt?

--Ras67 (talk) 13:27, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

As you can see, he uploaded them again. I put an add to ZooFari, but I think he didn´t read it. Is there any way to kow if he really sed permissions? Cheers. --Andrea (talk) 01:22, 8 March 2012 (UTC)
Please just post this question to Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard. That is the best way unless you find someone in IRC. I clicked two of his recent surviving uploads but none had a otrs ticket number. Is there somewhere such a number mentioned? Tell this number to the OTRS people. Chao --Saibo (Δ) 01:34, 8 March 2012 (UTC)
At Zoofari's talk you say "He claims to have rights over pictures". Where does he do this? If you want I can take over that part of questioning and deletion. Although I cannot speak Spanish... Ah, found it: in this DR. I made a new DR as there does not seem to be any email sent to OTRS, so they cannot do anything.

"private" WikiProject

Re this: there's nothing "private" about it, anyone is welcome to contribute constructively. However, given that you apparently cannot accept that enforcing a Commons policy which is required for legal purposes is a constructive thing to do, you would probably struggle to contribute constructively. Sometimes I wonder how you managed to contribute for so long to a US-based website without realising that this made it subject to US laws; though that pales in comparison with my disbelief that you stand fast in your denial of this simple fact. (Would you so freely deny that a Germany-based Commons must be subject to German law?) Rd232 (talk) 17:28, 11 March 2012 (UTC)

A problem with MediaWiki:Titleblacklist

Hello! I saw that you have experience with MediaWiki:Titleblacklist. I need a bit help with it and I cannot work out which of the lines with regexes shall I fix or comment. Today, officially started a collaboration between Bulgarian Wikipedians and the Bulgarian Archives State Agency (COM:BASA). For this sake, the five people, me including, who signed the agreement with BASA, decided to register new accounts and upload the documents from BASA using them, so that not mix these with the personal uploads every user can make, too. We decided to have these new accounts named "BASA_<original username>", which in my case is "BASA Spiritia". However, one of my colleagues have his original username in cyrillic, Подпоручикъ. He reported to me that he is not able to register his new account (BASA Подпоручикъ) with the error message: „Login error The name is not allowed to prevent confusing or spoofed usernames: Contains incompatible mixed scripts. Please choose another name“. Is it possible, in your opinion, to (temporarily) comment the respective regex which prevents him from creating this legitimate username? And, respectively, which line corresponds to this error message? Thank you in advance, Spiritia 16:14, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

The easier way since you are sysop: make him an account using Special:UserLogin/signup. Read the guide here: en:Wikipedia:Request_an_account/Administrators#Handling_requests. You just need his email address and the desired user name. Did that help? Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 20:25, 13 March 2012 (UTC)
And in addition: the error is not caused by Titleblackblist (same was discussed at en:MediaWiki_talk:Titleblacklist/Archive_2#Why_no_.22incompatible_mixed_scripts.22). It (message: MediaWiki:Antispoof-mixedscripts) is caused by the anti spoof extension. --Saibo (Δ) 20:35, 13 March 2012 (UTC)
One more: a warning: probably the account creation fails also at other wikis which means that SUL does not work as usual: if you want to use that name also at other wikis you need to get a sysop each time. --Saibo (Δ) 20:37, 13 March 2012 (UTC)
Enormous thank you. I didn't know about the "by email" option which is quite reasonable. I wrote a long explanation in the "Reason" box. :) Hope everything will be okay now. Spiritia 21:20, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

...I can't tell you how long it's been that way, just from the settings file that talk namespaces including user talk are currently noindexed:

'wgNamespaceRobotPolicies' => array(

   'dewiki' => array(
       NS_TALK => 'noindex,follow',
       NS_USER_TALK => 'noindex,follow',
       NS_PROJECT_TALK => 'noindex,follow',
       NS_IMAGE_TALK => 'noindex,follow',
       NS_MEDIAWIKI_TALK => 'noindex,follow',
       NS_TEMPLATE_TALK => 'noindex,follow',
       NS_HELP_TALK => 'noindex,follow',
       NS_CATEGORY_TALK => 'noindex,follow',
   ),

If you really wanted to know, you could probably track down a bug that was filed requesting it.

File:Super Tucano - Operation Agata.ogv

This is Portuguese, not Spanish. Commons links to the Brazilian Air Force which links to Youtube. The Youtube channel belongs to the Brazilian Air Force and the film seems to be licensed under the Standard YouTube License. The film shows an operation of the Brazilian Air Force. No evidence that the film is available under a free licence, as far as I can see. --Stefan4 (talk) 22:16, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for correcting my mistake and the clarification of the copyright status. Now I have nominated this file for deletion. Regards, --Pristurus (talk) 23:09, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
Thanks to you both! Have commented at the DR. According to COM:CT#Brazil works from the Navy could be PD - but this is not Navy. --Saibo (Δ) 02:11, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

It looks like they just deleted your article, but I transferred its content to the main article with a bit of reworking [18]. Please don't be so upset with this decision. Remember, Wikimedia has donors, the people who write their checks and pay their bills, and the officials are elected by the community at large. They have a right to have some say in things. I don't agree with you on this case but in general Commons still needs people who are tolerant and inclusive to preserve its content and its ability to speak to all (well, almost all) people and cultures. Don't throw away what you've done over one case where we disagree when we don't even know all the facts. Wnt (talk) 15:34, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
Wikimedia has donors, yes, but that does not mean that they should behave like shortsighted prostitutes without any respect for the human rights, like the freedom of the individual, just to please stupid US media. And I will not continue to waste my time to a project which is ruled by such principles and all users are just saying "yes, big WMF". WMF has to change respectively we need to set up a fork. --Saibo (Δ) 16:32, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
This section was archived on a request by: Saibo (Δ) 16:32, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
Two comments: Firstly, Donors do not dictate project policies. The WMF is not worried about losing donors over content issues; please don't use that as a strawman. [Among other things, fund drives have been able to end early in recent years.]
And secondly, the WMF is not worried about "pleasing the US media", stupid or otherwise. The Foundation engages in very limited PR - a small fraction of its work, as most publicity is word of mouth - and PR does not dictate policies or project direction. That said, the WMF does care about what is seen as globally acceptable or unacceptable on the projects, which is more relevant here.
There are valid questions about how to safeguard communities; this is one of the WMF's occasional roles. You may well disagree with the decision made, including the idea that Beta_M was a danger to the community - I understand the argument. If you want the WMF or its position to change, you should (continue to) speak out. But please do not make unjustified assumptions about the motives of others just because you disagree with their decision. --SJ+ 02:40, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
I don't see this as a content issue. To me it looked a lot like the Pied Piper leading the kids out of town. If you don't stop him then, when will you stop him? Now I've resisted, and continue to resist, the harsher Jimbo Wales wording of some of these things; I want to make sure we give fair consideration to hypothetical cases in which the editor deserves public sympathy. But if we don't set a boundary here, we have no boundary at all between the kids and whatever might happen to them. Wnt (talk) 06:07, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
Just wondering, what exactly can a Wikia wiki manager do? Can you get the IP location of users? wikia:students:User:Ethical Anarhist appears not to be a checkuser, but wikia:students:Special:ListUsers claims that there are three checkusers on the project, although it doesn't seem to be possible to list them. I would assume that Wikia is a protected environment just as WMF projects. --Stefan4 (talk) 13:30, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
Some scenarios came pretty quickly to mind; they don't depend on tools, but simply that someone is in a position of relative authority. Wnt (talk) 16:39, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
If he should be blocked for actions here is not the question here (it was on the page we all know and through which he was not blocked). The issue is that he was blocked by WMF for undisclosed reasons (and unless I know better I need to assume that WMF simply overruled the community (otherwise Jimbo had to "eat his words") - no, I do not trust WMF that they got other information than we). --Saibo (Δ) 20:18, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
Hi Sj, you may have your POV and I have mine (that includes the needed interpretations of WMF's actions since WMF refuses to explain anything). WMF has not the trust to act like that, partly because WMF messed up too much in the past (for example(!) I like to remind of Jimbo deleting many files here at Commons). There es no reason to continue to support WMF's ecosystem and with that inherently supporting WMF's wrong morality and decisions. --Saibo (Δ) 15:15, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

Global lock banner on your user page

Saibo, whilst the issues as of late are surely emotive, with a range of opinions of what is the right and/or wrong way to deal with issues once they have arisen, could you possibly leave the global lock banner off your talk page, and perhaps instead clearly and eloquently state what the issues is as you see it? You are more likely to get your point across that way. As you can probably imagine, this is only the beginning of what is likely to be a long process. russavia (talk) 15:11, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

Could you just change the banner saying that you oppose global blocks. Its getting ridiculous that there's an edit war on your own user page. There are other ways you could make your point instead of misrepresenting the WMF like this. Your just treading water here. Thanks. Techman224Talk 17:36, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
I think it would be better if you try to calm down a bit and then delete the banner from User:Saibo and User talk:Saibo/Editnotice. I understand that you are unhappy with the recent office action, but please avoid taking it too hard. --Stefan4 (talk) 17:48, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

Just a thought

You and Naibot are incredibly unhappy with the decision by the WMF Office. I get that. You may think you're making a point by this. Unfortunately, you're not. With all due respect, your actions come off as incredibly petulant and immature. If you're trying to make a point, it's getting lost because the perception (at least by the people you're trying to persuade) is that you're acting like a six year old throwing a temper tantrum. I do hope you return, mind you, from what I understand and can see from your contributions you are a useful contributor to Wikipedia, but your behavior in this issue is counterproductive. Glad to greet you Saibo! After a half-year I try to upload the photos once again. The memory of your kind help is alive in my mind and I am here. :) I told the author of the photos to send a letter to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org from alexey.lushnikov@xxx.xx.

Mal gucken … --Geitost diskusjon 02:38, 9 March 2012 (UTC) PS: Deine Seite gefällt mir in Blau besser als in Rot. ;-)
;-) Na ja, was soll’s?
→ COM:VP#Pages with categories set via template may not appear in the super categories (nun ohne irgendwelche Kommentare im Archiv: Commons:Village_pump/Archive/2012/03#Pages_with_categories_set_via_template_may_not_appear_in_their_super_categories) Viele Grüße --Saibo (Δ) 15:42, 11 March 2012 (UTC) --Saibo (Δ) 14:22, 22 March 2012 (UTC)

;-) --Geitost diskusjon 16:02, 22 March 2012 (UTC)
Ach so, ja.

Need admin review

Hi! We need an unbiased admin review this Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Images from the Romanian Communism Online Photo Collection. It has been stalling for a while. Could you please do it or point me to someone who could? Thanks! --Codrin.B (talk) 02:35, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi Codrin.B, sorry, I do not continue to contribute here due to the acting of Wikimedia Foundation and some users here. I would just wait (it will not get forgotten) - many deletion requests take very long due to lack of good administrative (that does not only include "admins") manpower. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 12:32, 21 March 2012 (UTC)
Leaving this deletion request out of the conversation since is minor in comparison with your note, I'm really sorry to hear that. I did some quick reading about that conflict but I am not very clear about various parties involved and who is guilty of what. However, to me, Wikipedia and Commons are all of us, even though there is an organization named Wikimedia Foundation. From what I can gather, the Wikimedia Foundation is formed also from Wikipedians. So if some "don't play nice", they will depart in time, others taking their place. I wouldn't let any conflict stop you from making all the great contributions you did, even if some events can be a turn off. Take a break if needed, but don't go too far. I am sure there are plenty of users that appreciate your work. Best.--Codrin.B (talk) 20:50, 22 March 2012 (UTC)
Hi Codrin.B, thank you for your kind words. The conflict is not an easy to understand one, indeed. The Foundation is partly built of elected (officially) Wikipedians (parts of the "board"), yes - but the decision making circles (or e.g. Sue Gardner) are not Wikipedians (at least not elected Wikipedians) to my knowledge (which is not very good). If you would know that a ship is sinking or commanded by pirates would you donate much of your time to repair and build that ship? I don't guess so. That is the reason I decided to not continue to contribute to WMF's ecosystem. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 22:54, 22 March 2012 (UTC)

Konflikte

Man weiß nie vorher, was die Sache so alles weiterbringt, was man so macht.

meta:Talk:Global_bans#An_alternative_relating_to_overturning_vs_opt-in

meta:Talk:Global_bans#An_alternative_relating_to_overturning_vs_opt-in – Since your opinions on global bans and global locks are so strong, perhaps you should examine NULL's proposal. Any comments you wish to share there would be welcomed. --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 21:00, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi Michael, thanks for this notice. However, I am not active at Wikimedia anymore. You are welcome to mention my thoughts or User:Saibo/WMF there. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 21:21, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
Wouldn't this discussion be a perfect chance for you to change the global block policy and maybe try to get the office action changed? --Stefan4 (talk) 21:32, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
Sure, a good idea that some projects do not need to use global locks - as you can imagine. But I am not active anymore. That said, the global lock would still be wrong even if Commons would exempt. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 22:05, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

;-) Na, was soll’s?

;-) --Geitost diskusjon 13:29, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

A cup of tea for you!

Meissen-teacup pinkrose01.jpg It's great to see you are back. Departure of users like you will only harm the healthy part of Commons, make the WR team happy (not that anybody care about their feelings -- but if you makes them happy, you are probably doing something wrong), and guys from Wikimedia American simply will not give a damn. Commons still is a worthy project after all, even if the current management is a joke. Trycatch (talk) 18:10, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
Hi Trycatch, thank you very much for the tea and your message! :-) However, I am not "back". I am active only in that one topic (and some minor other parts which are not much work for me and seemed to be worth it). I had just written a new paragraph to my "essay". --Saibo (Δ) 18:18, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
Well, it puzzles me a lot as well -- why Commons still tolerate people who obviously came here not to contribute, but to troll/attack/harass/whatever. IMO any copyvio uploader is a lot better than them, because copyvio uploaders at least contribute, albeit in a wrong way. I'm not sure if such toleration disqualifies the community completely, however (anyway it's usually better and easier to simply don't feed the trolls). Block of Beta_M is different, it wasn't a community decision, it was a decision by the WMF against the community consensus. I never saw anything good done by the Wikimedia US for Commons (in contrast to Wikimedia Deutschland for example), so it would be strange to expect that they will suddenly invent something smart. Fortunately, they do not care about Commons enough to broke it completely. I hope you will reconsider about leaving Commons, however it is your decision (if Commons is not fun for you anymore, there is a little reason not to leave), so good luck anyway. --Trycatch (talk) 19:16, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
It would be nice if you could also post your opinion here: Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard/User_problems#User:Tarc_.E2.80.93_here_to_contribute.
Wikimedia Deutschland is not really better - a bit maybe, yes but the WMF genes are obvious frequently. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 20:18, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
Ist so was hier erwünscht?
Zitate sind also eher meinerseits unerwünscht.
:-( --Geitost diskusjon 20:33, 12 April 2012 (UTC)
Nun mischt der, der irgendwie versehentlich nach Commons kam, sich auch noch an fremden Stellen ein: User_talk:Mdennis_(WMF)#WMF_fails_to_provide_a_reason_since_2012-03-16. Nirgends ist man sicher. --Saibo (Δ) 21:01, 12 April 2012 (UTC)

You have been blocked for a duration of 1 week

Blocked user.svg
You have been blocked from editing Commons for a duration of 1 week for the following reason: Your behaviour recently is unprofessional and unbecoming to an admin. You are being disruptive, vindictive and frankly a troll. Please, take this in the spirit is is intended and take some time off from Commons. Go outside, eat some ice cream, hug a tree, whatever, just don't edit Commons, since it's clearly not good for you right now. I want to ensure you stay as a user and as an admin, but you're making it difficult for everyone, yourself included. You are a good guy, and a good contributor, but right now your mind's not in the right place, you need to take a chill pill. Clearly, as you are an admin, you can remove this ban. However, I feel it would be best if you were to simply take it as is intended - a chance to cool off and get some time away. A week, a few days, whatever, but please, just have some time off from this place. If you wish to make useful contributions, you may do so after the block expires. See block log.

Hum. I've just come here to notify Saibo of Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard/User_problems#User:Saibo, only to find that block message. Now what? Rd232 (talk) 00:01, 14 April 2012 (UTC)
I think if Saibo decided to retire and state this fact everywhere on his talk/user page and then adds comments and even new sections to COM:AN/U, this account should remain blocked.
On the other hand I think autoblock and blocking account creation was wrong. It implies a high level of distrust. Saibo never abused multiple accounts and Niabot=Saibo as some trolls on COM:AN wrote is simply ridiculous: Just compare the language and the knowledge.
If they would be the same person we would have a real multi-talent here: Numerous good contribs in such different areas. But those people are very rare. -- RE rillke questions? 09:37, 14 April 2012 (UTC)

Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard/User_problems#Unblock – The community is now considering unblocking you. I recommend taking look at the statements offered by Mattbuck and by Geitost. My advice would be for you to use Template:Unblock and to state that you're ready to be unblocked and why you're ready. --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 23:04, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

Photographing photos from old books ?

Hello again, Saibo. I wonder if You know if it is alouded to make photos out of other photos from old books ? For instance from a swedish encyclopedia from 1924-1937 (20 volumes) and a "suppliment" of an other three books (including imperative updates especially from the earliest volumes). Some photos are obviously postcards while some lacks mentioned outher. Only a some photos the photographer is mentioned. I also wonder about old photos in more recent books (an exapple is swedish edision of HP Wilmott's "First World War" (in swedish "Första Världskriget") - some of the photos in this book seems to lack author. F.i. pictures taken on the western front by unknown soldiers. Could You enlighten me , if possible, rules concidering these issues. (And by the way, is postcards free. I've seen collections of postcards but "outside" Wikipedia and Commons). Perhaps You remember I had some problem with my granddad's photos of Siegessäule (as I belived it to be) if You remember, but as it turned out it was a monument in München, which was very embarrising to me. Best reguards anyway Pontus Eriksson - Boeing720 (talk) 16:55, 13 May 2012 (UTC)

I'm not Saibo, but I happened to notice this question. "Simple photos" taken before 1969 are in the public domain in Sweden. Most photos are assumed to be simple. However, such photos might be copyrighted in other European countries such as France or Germany (life of photographer+70 years) or Spain (life+80 years), so it is possible that some language edition Wikipedias might not allow such photos in their articles.
It is also necessary that the photo is in the public domain in the United States as Commons only allows material which is free in the United States. The first thing you should confirm is that the photos are published, as unpublished photos are copyrighted for life+70 years in the United States. Photos from encyclopædias and other books are obviously published, but if you obtain photos from other sources, this is something you would need to check. Swedish photos published before 1923 are always free in the United States, and Swedish photos published before 1964 are usually free as the Swedish publishers would have to submit papers to US authorities in order to keep a US copyright, which probably rarely or never happened. If the first publication was later, you need to check whether the book contains a copyright statement somewhere. Copyright statements are normally in the indicia and look something like "© YYYY Name of copyright holder". If you can't find a book without a copyright notice, the photo is unfree in the United States and can't be uploaded here.
Postcards are published in the same way as books. If they display photos, apply the same rules as you apply to photos in books.
Be warned that the text in Swedish books has a completely different copyright term. In many cases, you will find that the photos are free whereas the text is unfree. You may also find some useful information at COM:BB#Ord och Bild (in Swedish). --Stefan4 (talk) 18:39, 13 May 2012 (UTC)
I thank You very much, for this very detailed answer. You mention that this doesn't apply to texts, however. I have an old newspaper, from 1928. ("Söndagstidningen för södra Sverige" eng.tranl. The Sunday Newspaper for southern Sweden). In this there is a table of currency exchange rates, which at least I find interesting. Can such text be photographed ? Of course I could just refer to the newspaper a such, but I've tried that once on Swedish Wikipedia. I guess the source was not good enough. Frankly I've never even heard about this newspaper until I bought it in an antique store. But with other currencies converted to swedish krona ,it quite easy to calculate the exchange rate of all mentioned currencies at that time. I think a photo of the first side of the newspaper and the currency table together would do as a good enough source. But do You see any problems with this ? Boeing720 (talk) 20:27, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
Hi Boeing720! Few, simple facts are usually not eligible for copyright - see Commons:Images containing text - probably PD-text would apply. Cut the photo / scan to the table only. Then it is probably okay. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 21:33, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
I think I understand how to do this. And thanks for Your help. Cheers Boeing720 (talk) 03:54, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

Picture OK ?

Hello again, and sorry to bother You. I have now made a "creation" which includes the head of a swedish newspaper from 16:th December 1928 and the currency exchange rate table of this newspaper. But my photographical skill is obviosly limited. It was very difficult to get a clear shot of the exchange rate table. So I included a notepad clear typing of the original text -and an english translation. Name of file:Exchange rate source of 16 Dec 1928.JPG". I find it interesting and useful for converting all 15 currencies of that time. However I'm unsure if it's OK due to "hard text". It's ment as source/proof rather than a picture. If it's not up to standard of Commons, please erase it. If possible. Cheers ! Boeing720 (talk) 17:52, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi Boeing720! Note: I have converted the file name in your comment to a link - for easier handling.
COM:PS is very broad - but has limits when it comes to pure text which could be better stored as text on wiki pages. I think it is okay to show the real look of such a newspaper.
Regarding copyrights: I have added a bit to the file's description page about that.
You best use a scanner instead of a photo camera. If you use a photo try to set it to "macro" mode. May help.
Please ask such questions at COM:HD in the future - I plan not to be really active here and not to donate my time here (see top of page). Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 22:21, 24 May 2012 (UTC)
I have now read Your statement above. I do appriciate it. For my self I do thank You very much for all help You have given me during the last months. And by the way - when I red the word "scanner" I suddenly felt quite stupid. Thing is I've reasonly bought the camera (Nikon Coolpix L310, Ibelive) - I think (or hope rather) it's about as good as a compact camera can be. I had previosly taken long- and mid- range shots only. And the camera manual is thick indeed, so I have simply "got stuck" in this stupid "camera idea", totally forgotten that scanners actually do exist. I've been using an USB-grammophone for converting my vinyl records and put the scanner away due to lack of space. (not an excuse but a kind of explination...)
Once again I do thank You for all advices. Cheers and best of reguards Boeing720 (talk) 16:13, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

File:Governor's Award for Achievement in Export from New York State - DeFrancisci Machine Corporation 1984.pdf

Greetings. Why does this file not show a thumbnail? For what it's worth, keep the faith. Semper Fi! FieldMarine (talk) 00:00, 8 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi there! You can read at thumnail url: "Error creating thumbnail: convert: no decode delegate for this image format `/tmp/magick-XXu7yKYK' @ error/constitute.c/ReadImage/532. convert: missing an image filename `/tmp/transform_c4d253-1.jpg' @ error/convert.c/ConvertImageCommand/2970." not sure - maybe some not supported image compression inside the pdf? If that content is copyright-wise okay, please upload it as png - it is just one page anyway! Pdf is not useful here. Btw: please use COM:VP or COM:HD (for "easy" questions) instead of my talk page. COM:AN#Template:Uwlsubst

Was there a specific reason why we (or you, can't remember) decided to set up a different category?

Was it to allow checking? Or for historical, technical reasons (UpWiz didn't subst: it)?

I know I am guilty. -- RE rillke questions? 16:33, 12 June 2012 (UTC)

Siehe auch die Kategorieheader in Category:Media uploaded without a license.

Renamerequest

Hehe, Danke. -- RE rillke questions? 21:29, 13 June 2012 (UTC)

Vielleicht also doch nicht so viele User.
-- RE rillke questions? 12:17, 14 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi! I see you've been tagging a few of the images I uploaded as lacking permissions. Please don't do that! If you look at the two collages, you'll see that both are put together from stills from the linked category, all of which were commissioned by Wikimedia Foundation and are all clear as far as permission goes. The one I uploaded by Jay Walsh (a WMF employee) I got directly from Wikimedia Foundation. Thanks!--Sageross (talk) 01:37, 21 June 2012 (UTC)

"Please don't do that!"? How do you mean that? It is clear what has to be done, thanks for complying with COM:L and COM:OTRS. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 01:42, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
I'm just not sure why that's necessary. The collages are made from images that have clear permissions, so I don't see why OTRS is necessary. The one by Jay Walsh I guess I can send an OTRS email for, it's just an unnecessary hoop.--Sageross (talk) 01:52, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
If you can show the permission from the photographers otherwise (website, previously published at Commons,...) that is fine too - just add the links to the file page. It is useful to use derivativeFX to upload collages of images already on Commons. Outsiders (reusers) should be able to see why/how/that the photographer granted permission. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 01:56, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
Very well. I linked the files the stills come from, and asked Jay Walsh to email OTRS.--Sageross (talk) 02:54, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
Thank you, that is much more transparent now. --Saibo (Δ) 11:49, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
This section is not resolved. It is clear that these were uploaded by Wikimedia employees at the time of their employment and are clear as far as permission goes. Threatening to deletion them to satisfy some overly-simplistic idea that Jay Walsh may not have given his permission is reckless and counter-productive. Please stop wasting people's time. Bastique ☎ appelez-moi! 03:03, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
Sure, it was resolved for me. Regarding "clear that these were uploaded by Wikimedia employees" - please imagine you are your uncle and stumble over that picture somehow. How should he know that Wikimedia internal relation? Same applies for e.g. File:Great Feeling.ogv, File:Edit Button.ogv, File:Nice People MEDIUM.ogv, and File:Wikipedia User Name MEDIUM.ogv. WMF is king, hm? No problem, have fun with those WMF failures. ;-) I hate it. Thanks for appreciating and understanding. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 11:43, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
This is an absurd straw man argument. The fact is that you know the connection and you are deliberately creating controversy based on your antipathy of the Wikimedia Foundation. Bastique ☎ appelez-moi! 01:24, 2 July 2012 (UTC)
I know - but re-users dont. Thanks for understanding COM:L - yes, I know, many newbies like you have problems. Don't worry. --Saibo (Δ) 01:25, 2 July 2012 (UTC)
The images are legitimately tagged. Commons has no requirement that uploaders be the releasers of the license, only that the license be legitimate. There is no requirement for proving that fact other unless there is legitimate suspicion of fraud. You have no suspicion. There is adequate suspicion that your only purpose is to harass the employees and Wikimedia Foundation organization. --Bastique ☎ appelez-moi! 01:55, 2 July 2012 (UTC)
Maybe also WMF is able to learn: Commons:Village_pump#Saibo_maliciously_tagging_work_with_clear_licenses (perm.) That is done here, hopefully. --Saibo (Δ) 12:33, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

Please help

Hi, don't retire, we need you, you are great. Please look at this[20], they would like to delete my very rare unknown object pictures. Please contribute on the discussion. I appreciate your wisdom and extensive learning on these matters. Thanks. I am User:Ramon FVelasquez. Cheers.--180.191.155.56 09:27, 21 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi Ramon, please comment yourself in the deletion discussion (you are encouraged to do so - no need to respond on your talk page since that likely will not be seen). Explain what you intended the pictures for respectively why they are okay regarding copyrights (COM:DW, COM:FOP). Oh, and please log in if possible. We sometimes have people faking identities. I have commented regarding the ufo images. Research has to be done regarding the derivative works - I am not in the mood to do so currently. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 12:01, 21 June 2012 (UTC)

Hello Saibo, the ∇ causes problems in my Browser (FF, Win): It makes the line 6 times higher than normal. Text selection is more difficult and when writing there is a big vertical white space. Thank you - DMCA template

Hi, Saibo. Thank you very much for neatening up the DMCA take-down notices at village pump. I'm afraid that template has some issues, although it should be better next time. Kaldari fixed it up a bit, but I think the third parameter is probably still non-functioning. Adding a link to the image seems like a good idea, but I'm not at all template savvy and am afraid that I might break it even further if I try to add that function. Do you know how to modify Template:DMCA takedown notice so that would work? If not, I can ask for help at the help desk. --Maggie Dennis (WMF) (talk) 11:13, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi Maggie, I have made some changes to the template and the doc page. Did not test it on the two "real" pages (just on that page) - but it should work. Note that parameter 3 is not needed anymore (it was redundant with parameter 1). Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 15:48, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

Hmmmm, can you clarify what you EXACTLY ask from me ?

With this question.

Let's recapitulate. I am the author of this image. I uploaded it with due description and due free licence. Why on earth are you asking that I give permission again? How would that make a difference that I send an email to permissions to confirm that I uploaded it (which everyone can see in the history of the image), that I posted it under a free licence (which again everyone can see in the history of the page) and that I am myself (which... is something that I can not really know I could prove more than I have done in the past). Do you mean I have to send an identity card to prove my identity ??? Anthere (talk) 15:37, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi Anthere, sure: it was not obvious that you are the author (you are the photographer, right?) for two reasons: You wrote "source=Florence Devouard" instead of "own". Second you did indicate anyhow in the author field that "Florence Devouard" is you. How should one know that? Either you could link that real/alias name to your userpage or maybe append the user name enclosed in (). I hope that is clear now? :-) Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 16:03, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
Saibo, I believe you've got the wrong idea of how things work. Anthere's image was uploaded in November 2007, in other words before own was even invented. The burden of proof therefore lies with you to give reasonable evidence that Anthere isn't herself, rather than slapping people with a warning template because they didn't use a non-existent template. Deryck Chan (talk) 16:27, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
Hi Deryck, Commons:Project_scope#Evidence. If the template was not invented at the time of upload there are other means of making authorship clear: plain text - "source: I shot this bloody photograph. author: Florence Devouard (Anthere)". Oh, and, regarding "stoneage"... see: that upload help page at 2006-05-14 (closely look at the description of "source" and "author"). Thanks for your appreciation. --Saibo (Δ) 16:34, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) Again, I implore you to read what the policy you cited looked like when Anthere uploaded her picture. As for your other concern, I think Wikimedia Board of Trustees has made it rather clear that Florence Devouard = Anthere. Judging someone's actions in 2007 by your personal 2012 standard doesn't really work. Deryck Chan (talk) 16:44, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
As for your other link, I think the headline "How to make perfect image uploads" says all about how strictly the guidelines are meant to be enforced. But I digress. Deryck Chan (talk) 16:45, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
Policies evolve and some old content can simply be unlucky not to get grandfathered if the circumstances are bad. ;-) However, read the first two sentences of section Commons is freely licensed Wikimedia Commons is freely licensed. I something "free" if only someone's "board of trustees" members can re-use that file (because others cannot verify that the given author freely licensed the file)?
I don't care for someone's board of trustees, why should I? Also you cannot expect that every possible re-user knows that. Keep in mind that enabling re-use is a goal of COM:L. So, let's please get that stuff right. --Saibo (Δ) 17:05, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

Two things

First, you suggest that I should link my real/alias name to my userpage. This has been done many years ago. Commons is not my primary project, hence the fact that I mention at the top of my common user page the link to my meta page. My meta page is extremely crystal clear about the connexion between my real name and user name. You apparently came to my user page and took the time to post the warning. But you did not take the time to check that information following the relevant link. Just one click. I think that is unfortunate.
Second, it is perfectly ok that you do not know the link between the two names. We can not know everyone. What I find disturbing is that you request the uploader to follow the commons permission procedure in a case where I consider that this is of really little benefit. To make things more clear, I am both an admin here AND an OTRS volunteer. When I deal with an image which is representing a famous actor and which is obviously a professional picture, my first move is to ask for the permission on OTRS. Both because I am not sure the uploader is the copyright owner, or because I think he is but did not fully understood what free license means. And when it is a professional picture and/or the picture is the one of a famous person or famous building, I think it important to make doubly sure we are not infringing anyone's rights.

Now, in my case, even if you do not know the correspondance between my user name and my irl name, you may see that I am an oldbie, that I am an admin here (even if very little active. My main use of admin rights is precisely to check rights of deleted content). You can see that the image is used on a local wiki where not everyone has an edit right. And finally, you can see that the image itself is really a amateur picture. In short, the risk that I am not doing it right and the risk of a violation are really limited. Asking the uploader to follow OTRS permission in such cases appears to me to be putting a huge burden of work on OTRS volunteer for a very low risk. I am not sure this is the best way to focuse our energy. As an OTRS volunteer, I am happy to check and recheck and be really strict for many cases. But I am far less willing to put time into checking permissions of old contributors who provided amator images of wikimedia meetings. This is my view. Save OTRS volunteers energy !

All my best

Anthere (talk) 16:54, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

(Why do you write sooo much...?) Again, have a look at your file page with someone else's eyes. Only insiders can find your meta page. For more, see my answer above your comment. Thanks. --Saibo (Δ) 17:05, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

wp:de Datei:Albrecht Graf Bernstorff Portrait-2.jpg

Is it possible to upload de:Datei:Albrecht Graf Bernstorff Portrait-2.jpg from the german WP to Commons ? There is a strange copyright, and I don't know whether it is authorized to upload it by a third person.

I am currently translating de:Albrecht Graf von Bernstorff into french, and would like to get the picture as it is on the german version.

Yours sincerely.
