Hei,

Når du laster opp bilder fra f.eks. Flickr er det viktig at du får med navnet på fotografen, da dette er et krav i Creative Commons-lisensen. Se [1] for den beste måten å gjøre det på. Husk også å sette bilder i en kategori. Hilsen Kjetil r 20:20, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

Hi. I'd like to congratulate on your excellent update of the rather poor map I made. It's excellent. I think we should add a similar one for Strassbourg and perhaps Franfurt, end maybe offer the option on the sites of other EU capitals. Athinaios 14:47, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi there - the next time you initiate a deletion request could you make sure to complete it? You need to put it on the day's log of deletion requests (I have done this for you here) and notify the original uploader as a courtesy (I have done this here). Thanks, ~ Riana 17:58, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Wikipedia-logo.svg

Thanks for the last version of this image. Former versions were so bad that I had preferred, on hundreds of my Wikimedia accounts, to use, for my user page, the .png version, which wasn't blurred. Hégésippe | ±Θ± 13:22, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Error corrections

I notice you that created the SVG rendering of Image:Wikipedia-logo.svg. I have a long pending request: Could you please correct the errors as mentioned here: [2]? There are two errors: A devanagari and a Japanese rendering. I'm not qualified enough to comment on the Japanese thingy, but for the Indic-language script, the replacement character is वि I tried to fix it myself, but at 2 MB, it just sucked out all my RAM.

Thanks! Nichalp (talk) 07:43, 20 September 2008 (UTC)

Please check User:Ambuj.Saxena/Wikipedia-logo and it's talk page for more information on the Devanagiri and Japanese fixes. Thanks, Ganeshk (talk) 14:16, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Excellent work friend...

Excellent work friend, I like your maps. I was wondering if you could please do whatsoever with the location of Venezuela, as it did in Mexico.

First of all thank you very much.

Thanks, I appreciate it, but I'm afraid there are hundreds of medium-size countries, so I'll probably prioritise the bigger ones first (e.g. Australia, Argentina, Kazhakstan). But I'll give a discription on how to make the maps soon, so that other people can speed it up. - Ssolbergj (talk) 12:47, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Maps - India

Thanks for the India projection. But for inclusion on Wikipedia, I'm afraid we would have to neutrally represent the map of India. The version you uploaded equates the Line of Control as the International border. Please could you edit the disputed regions? Nichalp (talk) 14:26, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

Hello. I'm sorry, but I'm not familiar with which parts of india are recognised or not. If you've got a link to the details, I'll fix it. - Ssolbergj (talk) 12:40, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

I suppose we should stick with the previous, established map until this has been sorted out. --Dbachmann (talk) 20:09, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

Hi.this is a link to the political map of India which shows international boundaries rather than line of actual control. http://www.mapsofindia.com/maps/india/india-political-map.htm And this is a an official link http://india.gov.in/maps/indiaindex.php Please change the picture or remove it completely as it is not factually accurate. 125.17.226.3 13:33, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

Hi sorry, I missed out on your reply: Please see Image:India-locator-map-blank.svg. It explains the scenario very well. Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh are the disputed areas. Nichalp (talk) 19:55, 15 November 2008 (UTC)
Dear Ssolbergj, your map of China colors Arunachal Pradesh in light green (together with Taiwan)which implies it is somehow rather a part of CHina although under Indian administration. Why then doesn't the India map have Aksai Chin (a Chinese administered region claimed by India) be colored light green on the India map? Same goes with Pakistan occupied kashmir. Shouldn't those areas be in light green too? Please maintain neutrality as prescribed under Wikipedia:Neutral point of view. I look forward to you recoloring those maps with a NPOV in mind and not China slanted views. (Reference: [3] vs [4]. Thank you.

Hello, Ssolbergj!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

[edit] Please help

Hello Ssolbergj, I noticed your Barnstars contribution and userbox telling that you are an expert in vector graphics.

I would like to ask you, when you have some time, to make a Barnstar of National Merit for Buryatia. Here is its flag: Flag of Buryatia.svg

When addressing the layout, you may also keep in mind a similar flag of its former part Aga: Agin-BuryatFlag.svg

Since I ask you to help with a white-blue-yellow tricolor of a republic of a Mongolian people of Russia, here are the other two flags of Mongolian people of Russia that more or less follow the color pattern: Flag of Tuva: Flag of Tuva.svg and Flag of Kalmykia: Flag of Kalmykia.svg

that are also parts of this topic and deserve a single barnstar for each.

A barnstar for the Buryat nation may also embrace the main flag and the National Regions that are near it: Flag of Ust-Orda Buryat Autonomous Okrug.svg, Flag of Buryatia.svg, Agin-BuryatFlag.svg — it does not seem that flags on the right and on the left from the flag of the Buryat Republic have much meaning as separate barnstars since they are of very small regions.

Thanks in advance,

tar-ba-gan

[edit] where God lives?

Hi, Ssolbergj. How are you? I've seen your vector images. Can I ask a demand for you? Would you not want to draw a vector image of a supposed country where God was living? It should'nt be too large or too small -- a medium size would be appropriate. Its geographical traces would remind us to India... Imagine how long Renaissance navigators would come to this site. Imagine how they would arrive faster, because their hearts were brave and their eyes were hopeful of a good future. Imagine how difficult would be for navigators of our time explore its coastal, because we are accustomed to the speed of our service routes and technology. Imagine this country; but I don't want that you imagine its trees or its people, only its map... Imagine its transcendence with the same precision as you will imagine its geographical territory. Thank you. Auréola (talk) 03:06, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Inappropriate royalism in former versions of image

Your objections do have some basis, of course -- but I thought that it was far, far more important to avoid the impression that you're advocating for the return of the Comte de Paris and the Capet-Bourbon-Orleans monarchy in France, and the House of Savoy as kings of Italy. France has deliberately avoided adopting a coat of arms in the traditional sense, but does have emblems heavily associated with the letters "RF", while the only real coat of arms associated with post-1946 Italy is that of the military (also used in a slightly different variant on the merchant ensign). The flags in your latest version do avoid the royalist problem, and are certainly simple, but not really heraldic as such... But there's no need for an edit war, and I've uploaded my version under File:Quartering_of_coats_of_arms_of_the_European_Union.svg ... -- AnonMoos (talk) 06:58, 5 December 2010 (UTC)

I would not call one revert an edit war. In fact I think it's a bit outrageous that you actually call it that considering that I wrote "Rv good faith edit: Thanks for trying to improve it...". And as you might have noticed, I wrote to you straight away and tried to start a discussion on what's the best solution. I'd like a fruitful discussion, but when you for some reason upload your own version immediately, you automatically cancel any dialogue that could have taken place. BTW you should have used the talk page first. I responded to what you said there. - Ssolbergj (talk) 02:28, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
I didn't accuse you of edit-warring; I said that if I did any more uploading on that file, it would turn into an edit war. And I did add a relevant warning on the file page a day before I made any file upload (see http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File%3ACoat_of_arms_of_the_European_Union.svg&action=historysubmit&diff=46641934&oldid=46641646 ). I uploaded to show my idea for solving a significant problem with an image in use in several Wikipedia articles. AnonMoos (talk) 03:51, 8 December 2010 (UTC) AnonMoos (talk) 03:51, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
You had no reason to fear an edit war. I invited you to join a discussion and you uploaded your own version before you had even answered. If that had been the normal practice here on Commons, then not much discussion would have taken place. If I had chosen to disperse various new versions of an image each time I wanted to "show an idea" for a tweak to the original image, then communication aimed to produce quality-enhancing consensus would become completely irrelevant. "A warning?" It was a simple notation in the file description stating an obvious fact. I wouldn't call that a warning, and in any case it wouldn't be very productive to issue "warnings" when what one should really do is to at least try to engage in discussion revolving around the image content. - Ssolbergj (talk) 05:28, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
By the way, as the thing is currently laid out, Sweden kind of gets shafted -- its crowns are shown smaller than are the main elements of the coats of arms (if not themselves quartered) of the other nations... AnonMoos (talk) 07:05, 5 December 2010 (UTC)
To underline the point: why should we exchange views on size of the Swedish crowns when you obviously will do whatever you want with 'your own' version of the image anyway? - Ssolbergj (talk) 05:31, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
Sorry if you're resentful, but there were very serious problems with the previous version of the image, and it's not obvious whether your solution (tricolor flags) is any worse or better than mine -- so "let a thousand flowers bloom". You shouldn't take "image forking" personally; I've had some of my images forked in the past... AnonMoos (talk) 12:57, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
I'm not resentful, I just think it's really bad conduct to immediately upload your own version instead of engaging in a discussion. Especially so when the original uploader actively has shown that he's interested in such a discussion. - Ssolbergj (talk) 13:08, 11 December 2010 (UTC)

P.S. To see "RF" on a shield, look at File:Médaille de la Victoire version belge - revers.jpg ... AnonMoos (talk) 03:40, 15 December 2010 (UTC)

Well, nice. But I'm afraid that doesn't make the colours (or the tilting of the letters) more justified. From what I have seen, placing the tricolour on a shield is far more common (?). In general, pretending that a flag is a coat of arms is of course a sin in heraldry, but to introduce letters is perhaps even more so. I don't really have a solid opinion on this, and I could argue in either direction, but using the flag is probably the politically most correct option, and that's probably important in Wikipedia. The most critical thing about what you introduced for france is that the design of the letters and the use of colour appear to be based on nothing? Am I right? The fact of the matter is that France doesn't have a coat of arms. The design of the flag is 100% official. Placing a tilted version the monogram in gold on a blue background appears to be 100% unofficial. Since we're dealing with an encyclopaedia here, perhaps the level of "far-fetchedness" is something we ought to pay attention to. I'm really not seeking to fuel a polemic here, but the fleur-de-lis design is used to represent france in a ton of current coats of arms, including that of Canada. And there are pretenders in France who most likely recognise the fleur-de-lis arms. The fleur-de-lis design is strictly speaking France's latest coat of arms, and mere feelings associated with the republicanism-versus-monarchism debate shouldn't really matter in either direction (NPOV) . - Ssolbergj (talk) 16:19, 15 December 2010 (UTC)
They are not tilted -- each letter is flat on its serifs. Rather, the letters are arranged diagonally. I just left the colors as they were (Or on azure). The result is certainly unofficial, but it is clearly connected with, and reminiscent of, various versions of emblems of the Republic of France. And fleurs-de-lis are used to represent France in various cultural and historical contexts, but not really in a modern political or national-governmental context (unless you're a monarchist - and supporting royalist "pretenders" is exactly what such an image should not do). Flags are certainly one idea, but I had another idea, and I don't see why either one has to drive out the other. AnonMoos (talk) 20:10, 15 December 2010 (UTC)

[edit] File:Arms of the European Union.svg

Will you be easily-offended if I ask you what the central ox-head means? -- AnonMoos (talk) 23:48, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

The white bull in the Greek myth about Europa. Zeus in disguise. I reckon a reference to Ancient Greece ("craddle of western civilisation" etc.) and Europe's quasi-personification (see en:Symbols of Europe#Europa and the bull) would be somewhat appropriate. Christians would probably still be appeased by the not-so-secret-yet-unofficial origin of the golden crown of twelve stars and the use of the colour blue (See en:Flag of Europe#Biblical interpretation and en:Crown of Immortality). I imagine the pope nodding, satisfied by the image of Virgin Mary's crown placed upon Europe. Atheists wouldn't be more bothered than they are with the current EU flag (the EU being as secular as it is), and Greek mythology (counterbalance to possible christian symbolism) is followed by no one anyway. One could enjoy the fact that the Union would make use of the truly pan-European tradition of heraldic marshalling for unions. Member states' governments would perhaps like the intergovernmentalism implied by this method (showing national coats of arms), and federalists would like the symbolism of the central shield. Smaller member states in particular would perhaps like the fact that all of the quarterings are c. of the same size. Thoughts? - Ssolbergj (talk) 18:39, 3 February 2011 (UTC)
OK, but I doubt that many modern Europeans strongly identify with the Europa myth. But if you took File:Alex_K_Kryshtof_Kosynskyi.svg / File:POL COA Rawicz.svg and substituted a bull, then it would more strongly suggest the myth. By the way, when the words were originally coined, they were strongly Greek-centric and didn't really refer to continents: "Asia" meant Anatolia (now called "Asia minor"), "Europa" meant mainly Greece and the immediately neighboring areas to the north, and "Libya" meant distant regions all the way across the Mediterranean... AnonMoos (talk) 08:39, 4 February 2011 (UTC)
I wouldn't either expect the average European citizen to care about state symbolism at all, but I don't see any viable alternative for this purpose of finding a pan-European heraldic motif. Sure, including Europa herself could be a good idea.. I'll see what I can do. It would be great if you could cite sources and write this stuff about the early use of the word "Europa" in the Symbols of Europe article BTW. - Ssolbergj (talk) 13:39, 4 February 2011 (UTC)
It's kind of in the main en:Europe article ("Later, Europa stood for central-north Greece, and by 500 BC its meaning had been extended to the lands to the north."), but I'm not sure it would be suitable for the Symbols of Europe article. AnonMoos (talk) 17:29, 5 February 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Latest version

An example of an unusual but "legal" supporter.
Is a seascape compartment very unnatural?
The old coat of arms of Malta

The bordure of 12 mullets Or on azure is a nice idea (though it's rather large), but I'm not sure about Europa and the bull as supporters (which makes the allusion to the legend more obscure, since left and right supporters often come from different sources, and have no direct relationship with each other, as with the lion and unicorn of Great Britain etc.), while the gold helm with fleurs-de-lis and order insignia with imperial eagles on the ribbon makes the overall "achievement" look a little too pseudo-royal, maybe... AnonMoos (talk) 11:53, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

P.S. Also, why flowing water as the "compartment"? -- AnonMoos (talk) 11:55, 8 September 2011 (UTC)
Yes, perhaps the mullets should to be a bit smaller... Europa sitting on the bull's back is of course the most common image of the myth (and that's also the part when the two are at sea); and it would strictly speaking be heraldically "legal" to have Europa holding the escutcheon while sitting on the bull's back. On the other hand, having one supporter on each side of the shield is far more common and conventional. This also ensures some symmetry, which of course is popular in heraldry.
I'm aware that the helmet alludes to the fleur-de-lis, and therefore should be replaced. So far I haven't found another helmet affronté that looks as good. One has to keep in mind that there's a ton of symbolism for heraldic helmets: The design of the current one is e.g. supposedly "royal". But since there of course isn't one type for supranational, republican unions, I don't know of a better alternative. The German reichsadler would of course be controversial and perhaps seem pseudo-imperial, but it just happens to be a part of the karlspreis. This prize could be replaced by e.g. olive branches, but that would remove some of the symbolism that is specific to Europe.
The Europa myth is all about her being carried across the Mediterranean, and Europe's coastline is certainly very big and dominant. Therefore I suppose a seascape compartment is sensible. Don't you think? Stone pedestals have e.g. a tendency to look old-fashioned and baroque, i.e. impressions that are incompatible with the EU's image of representing post-WWII sensibility and renewal. - Ssolbergj (talk) 16:50, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

OK, I guess the watery compartment is logical in order to try to connect Europa and Taurus; however, as a separate symbol it would be seem to be most suitable for an island or maritime empire. Also, to suggest the sea it might better to use waves that are pointy at the top -- smoothly undulating parallel stripes of white and blue can tend to suggest springs or rivers...
As for single supporters, the coat of arms of Campbell of Craignish famously have a single ship (or "lymphad") supporter, while modern coats of arms of Canadian dioceses are supported by a cathedral chair...
The Charlemagne symbolism can be highly positive for both French and Germans, but almost completely meaningless to many whose nations were never under Charlemagne (such as the British), and might have a negative value for nationalities which were negatively impacted by the Carolingian empire (including at least some Czechs, I would guess). I think it would be best not to have the overall effect look too "royal"... AnonMoos (talk) 00:07, 9 September 2011 (UTC)
Hmm, well I'm not sure about "pointy" waves indicating the ocean. I haven't seen very many seascape compartments, but all of them have had rounded waves. The waves in the Maltese arms probably aren't rounded because there are so many rivers on the island, but perhaps rather because it's a standardised design.. I don't really know what an heraldic expert would say. Sure, it would have been a more straight-forward choice for an island state, but I reckon e.g. a mount vert would be more out of the blue (not to say it would almost be a copy of the UK arms then).
Sure, Europa on the bull could probably look very good as one combined supporter, but I don't have enough skill/patience to draw something like that gracefully... And as I've said, all symmetry would disappear.
I'm aware that Charlemagne is controversial. The pope john paul called him the Father of Europe; he did alot to revive the society and its culture, as well as "unifying Europe". But he was of course also a warlord of Christianity, and worshipping him is not entirely politically correct today. I'll probably remove the medal. - Ssolbergj (talk) 00:37, 9 September 2011 (UTC)
I'm not "against" Charlemagne as such, but I have doubts as to whether he's truly a pan-European unifying symbol -- and the ribbon and gold disc together look like the insignia of a chivalrous order, which contributes to giving the overall arms too much of a quasi-royal appearance (in my opinion)... AnonMoos (talk) 03:26, 9 September 2011 (UTC)
I know what you mean... I'll probably try olive branches or something similar. Peace symbols, you know. - Ssolbergj (talk) 15:15, 9 September 2011 (UTC)

He claims, "that the links don't work" etc. Furthermore, the Cross of Mannerheim (Mannerheimkruis) is a decoration, not a coat of arms. --WPK (talk) 23:21, 25 February 2011 (UTC)

[edit] File:EU Member States' CoA Series- Poland.svg

I just wanted to explain reaction of other people. This eagle is taken from Coat of arms of Czech Republic and has nothing to do with original. It hasn't any historical or even heraldic connection. Farther the Czech eagle has a very very specific shapes, and for sure it's not a standard eagle figure. In some group of people this eagle could be identifiable as an insult. Why haven't you wanted to use originals coats of arms of EU countries? JDavid (talk) 09:22, 2 March 2011 (UTC)

Almost all coat of arms are fail, e.g. the coat of arms of Finland. --WPK (talk) 14:29, 2 March 2011 (UTC)
Please read the text in the info box! It explains the issue, and tells why, for instance, an interpretation of the Polish coat of arms with a simplified eagle is also justified and valid. I'll see whether I can replace the eagle with a more generic design if the current version really is that strongly associated with the Czech Republic. I personally don't accept the notion that government interpretations per definition are somewhat more "true" (as you've written in your edit summaries), per the text that's written in the info box. [6] I understand that some people might be more interested in using the exact same interpretation that is stamped on government documents, that's why I'm not attempting to ram the files in this series through in Wikipedia articles, but that has to do with convenience for WIkipedia visitors, not validity, because per the text in the infobox, they are valid. - Ssolbergj (talk) 01:37, 3 March 2011 (UTC)
Please, compare:

At least these coats of arms upper are false.
--WPK (talk) 02:38, 3 March 2011 (UTC)
Haven't you read the text in the infobox yet? It states that only the escutcheons are included, which absolutely isn't per definition "false". On the Czech one, I suggest you check out Small coat of arms of the Czech Republic.svg . Ssolbergj (talk) 08:59, 3 March 2011 (UTC)
However, the 'animals' in "Your" coats of arms are straight copies: Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechia, Finland, Luxembourg, Netherlands and partly Britain, Latvia and Spain. Same with Denmark and Estonia, partly Britain. Furtermore, Germany, Poland and Romania. In really, they are not. --WPK (talk) 16:36, 3 March 2011 (UTC)
If you had actually bothered to read the text, you'd notice that it also says that the series has "consistency in the use of charges". Per the rest of the text, consistency in charges is not a problem, and interpretations used by current governments aren't per definition any more 'valid'. Do I really have to repeat each part of the text here? Can't you read it? And by the way, you have completely overlooked the fact that several of the files that you've listed as being "more real" (or something like that) above, were made by Wikimedia contributors, based on the original blazons, and are different from the exact version that's used by the respective national government. For instance the Swedish and the Danish ones. - Ssolbergj (talk) 18:50, 3 March 2011 (UTC)
The text is not valid, but the pictures on the coat of arms are. Now Your works are false. --WPK (talk) 23:38, 3 March 2011 (UTC)
Now, that sentence did not make sense. Trolling perhaps, but certainly not argumentation. - Ssolbergj (talk) 23:49, 3 March 2011 (UTC)
Can or will You not see the differences?! EU Member States' CoA Series- Finland.svg Coat of arms of Finland.svg EU Member States' CoA Series- Germany.svg Coat of Arms of Germany.svg etc. --WPK (talk) 01:24, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
Of course these images don't look identical, but as I have been trying to explain to you for a while; the specific differences aren't a problem since this is heraldry, not an attempt to mimic a logo. If your had bothered to read the text in the image description, I wouldn't have to explain this over and over again. Why are you trolling? - Ssolbergj (talk) 09:10, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
This series adheres to the basic heraldic principle that an visual interpretation is valid as long as the blazon is being followed in its entirety.

This is actually true, so I suggest you take it into consideration before you get even angrier and repost your "these are different!!" message again. - Ssolbergj (talk) 09:17, 4 March 2011 (UTC)

Why on earth You have made inter alia the Finnish lion just like the Norwegian lion? Look at e.g. the position of the tail of the Finnish lion and the heraldic roses. --WPK (talk) 14:17, 4 March 2011 (UTC)

The various tail positions are outlined in en:Lion (heraldry), and as you can see, there is no traditional type of tail that looks exactly like the one that's shown on this interpretation, so I opted for the standard tail of a lion rampant which goes straight upwards (the most common type, which happens to be used e.g. for the lion in Norway's coat of arms). On the 9 roses: their exact position isn't specified in the blazon, so the important thing is that they are "spread around". - Ssolbergj (talk) 15:54, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
  • Only enacted coats of arms are valid. Some of original coats of arms could be inconsistent with heraldic rules. For example Ssolbergj used Polish eagle with gold legs, but originally only claws are gold. German shield is gothic not iberian (hispanic shield). It just OR, and shouldn't be used as State CoAs anywhere to not propagate mistakes. JDavid (talk) 19:18, 5 March 2011 (UTC)
Shield shapes aren't regulated by heraldic laws. E.g. see this precedence. The centuries-old tradition of making new interpretations of original blazons is not OR. This is a tradition which is based on the rules of heraldry, and BTW, the topic for this discussion is heraldry. National government guidelines may contradict the liberties that heraldic rules allow for, but that's not a reason for people to hunt down images here on Commons which continue to adhere to the fundamental rules that revolve around blazoning. This is a nuanced issue which shouldn't be oversimplified by the use of vague brands such as "true" or "false". It's not a matter of course that the rules of heraldry can be overridden universally for a specific coat of arms. The blazons that typically are written into each national constitution remain the core focus for heraldic interpretation. But some states, such as Poland and Germany, obviously have a couple of very well-known stylised designs which there's no reason to try to challenge, so I'm not forcing files into Wikipedia articles. Just relax. - Ssolbergj (talk) 00:18, 8 March 2011 (UTC)
Dear Ssolbergj, your German arms version is actually wrong in a heraldic manner: The German arms show a plain black Eagle with black or red claws tongue etc. But the eagle never has cloverstems (Kleestängel) at all, not even in black. The only eagles in Germany who show them are usually Brandenburgian, Prussian or Silesian. So please take the cloverstems out, otherwise I see no problem with it.

Oh ya, the Bohemian Lion always has two tails. So even if you use your standartized sets, that lion needs two tales, otherwise it's a simple white lion on red, which could stand for anything but Bohemia. --David Liuzzo (talk) 17:41, 12 May 2011 (UTC)

Hi. Thanks. I'm aware of the importance of tail types, I'll fix it. I'll also remove the cloverstems for Germany. - Ssolbergj (talk) 21:28, 12 May 2011 (UTC)

See File:Arms of All Nations by Boston Public Library.jpg... AnonMoos (talk) 17:27, 12 August 2011 (UTC)

Hmm… Nice try, but don't you think it would be a tad far-fetched to insinuate that Paris per se is representative of France as a whole? - Ssolbergj (talk) 19:43, 13 August 2011 (UTC)

[edit] France again

For yellow "RF" on blue, see File:Paris Mairie du 10e 60582.JPG... AnonMoos (talk)

It's interesting, but France has been through two changes of republic and one change of regime since then, so I would not place too much hopes on its continuing legal status... One thing I notice is that File:Coat of arms of France.png includes the letters "RF", while the interpretation File:EU_Member_States'_CoA_Series-_France.svg omits the "RF". AnonMoos (talk) 00:29, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

Well, the RF is a design detail of the Legion of Honour order - which is omitted in the other image (it only depicts the escutcheon, which of course is allowed for in heraldry). I'm no expert in French legal history, so I don't know what implications of the change of republic were for these sort of things. Though it's perhaps worth noting that French wikipedia has this version listed as "Armoiries moyennes" in the infobox in [7]. The same article also says that this version appeared in encyclopedias that were published after the establishment of the fifth republic (though I'm not sure what the contexts were). - Ssolbergj (talk) 00:39, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
Hadn't looked at the fr:Armoiries de la France article before; thanks for mentioning it. It clearly states that everything after 1870 is "officieux" and not "officiel" (a significant distinction!), and that several alternative emblems have gone in and out of government use without ever having been formally decreed. I can understand your procedure of recasting the oval in File:Coat_of_arms_of_France.png as a heraldic shield, but I still think it's unfortunate that your result omits "RF", because "RF" has been used in some form or other in the great majority of "officieux" emblems since 1870... By the way, the one that's really strange is File:Coat_of_Arms_of_the_July_Monarchy_(1831-48).svg - AnonMoos (talk) 16:55, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
Yes, France doesn't have any such symbol that is entirely official, but we are talking about what's the best approximation to a coat of arms, right? This heraldic blazoning was provided for by an embassy in 1929, and voilà, a coat of arms for France (at some level, clearly semi-official) necessarily came into being, and can be depicted. I haven't seen any other blazoning for France as a whole, that has been made by a government authority after the rejection of the royal arms. The existence of a state-issued blazoning is perhaps significant. The fact that this version has been mentioned in several encyclopedias, indicates that this isn't merely a forgotten obscurity. Well, the escutcheon for the 1929 CoA would in any case never include an "RF". I'm not sure if I think it's unfortunate either, since it would be considered heraldically exotic to have the name of the respective armiger written as a charge on a shield. Yes, the July Monarchy doesn't seem to have been abundant in heraldic motifs (or just very proud of their constitution). - Ssolbergj (talk) 01:32, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

[edit] File:Greater Coat of Arms of the German Emperor.svg

I for one like your new version, but I can't speak for Peeperman though. One little thing though: the crown is so out of style. I tried changing it a bit in the original file, as you can see. It was far from perfect, but I think it's better than the original black bordered version you've returned to. The rest of the file is superior, without any doubt. I've removed the old version from my user page, so people will stop using it. Adelbrecht (talk) 12:29, 15 August 2011 (UTC)

Oh, well I didn't notice that the crown in the old version was different from File:Imperial State Crown of Germany.svg. I don't really see much difference now that you've pointed it out either, since the size of the crown anyway is so small in the image. What's needed is obviously a complete "sodacannic" style overhaul of the crown. Right now I can't stand handling Trajan's Imperial State Crown in Inkscape, the file is too f'ing huge. All the completely unnecessary details result in Inkscape very often crashing. A few colour tweaks won't be sufficient. - Ssolbergj (talk) 20:08, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
The order is also out of style BTW... - Ssolbergj (talk) 20:58, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
It fits better than Trajan's original, that one was very strange and assymetrical. I also have the problem of Inkscape crashing, I don't understand how he could make the whole file that big. Adelbrecht (talk) 21:31, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
Do you think the new version is alright? - Ssolbergj (talk) 13:57, 28 August 2011 (UTC)
It's easy Trajan's file got that big since he stole it from my then PNG depiction using automatic vectorization tools (without crediting me at all, something he doesseems to do on a regular basis). His file has numerous errors, for the real look of the crown stick to the source file I uploaded or my depiction which I feeled I was forced to release as SVG after he produced that poor quality file by using my original:
sourcefile
,
my SVG made from the source
. --David Liuzzo (talk) 14:50, 28 August 2011 (UTC)

Well, I agree that Trajan has shown bizarre behaviour. But I have in fact made a new version of the crown that is simpler and more in style with the rest of the greater and middle versions of the German imperial coats of arms that I've uploaded:

You removed these two images from German wikipedia, explaining that these versions had various errors. Would you say that any small variation from (or simplification of) the SVG image you uploaded, means that the image in which the new crown is located, is heraldically erroneous? - Ssolbergj (talk) 15:05, 28 August 2011 (UTC)

Yes it's a nice "Sodacanized" version. Would you mind adding the sides with gems as seen in the source? Well the errors I pointed out are actual bigger heraldic errors. On the stilistic matters I only advised you to stick as closely to the originals, because in contrast to earlier times the end of the 19th century (as well as the 20th and 21st) in Germany/Austria is generally already using very concrete depictions of the arms, that's why I spent two months on the Imperial Eagle, trying to stick as closely to the source file in the university library as possible, because you see that specific design on hundreds of sources (Postal Stamps, Signs, Coins...) (just in the same way the specific Eagle of 1927 is used till today in Germany). --David Liuzzo (talk) 15:26, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

I visualized the issues for you here: [8] --David Liuzzo (talk) 19:17, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
Many thanks for the help!:) I'll try to fix these things and in general improve the files. I understand what you're saying about trying to "stick closely" to Ströhl's versions since these are overwhelmingly famous, but since the liberties of heraldry still apply, I don't feel obliged to make a perfect vectorisation of Ströhl's brush strokes. But I'll work on it, and see how I can make the eagle etc. look more "Ströhlesque". - Ssolbergj (talk) 22:13, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
I'll also add gems to the side of the crown. - Ssolbergj (talk) 22:14, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
Let me know if you need any further help. Since I was preparing an own version of these arms before, I could send you the elements I already had made, so as the "Ströhlian" Eagle of the Shield. Or I could provide a more high resolution scan. :) --David Liuzzo (talk) 09:18, 8 September 2011 (UTC)
Unfinished SVG designs would surely be very helpful. :) I don't have a PC drawing board, so I'm not terribly efficient when it comes to drawing from scratch. Here you can email me (paste the SVG source code for example) Thanks! - Ssolbergj (talk) 15:20, 9 September 2011 (UTC)
Well, I had some free time, so I finished the arms trying to stick to Ströhl as much as I could. While working I saw that I made an error, too: The Eagle on the Banner of Brandenburg actually has a breast shield with the arms of the Burggrafschaft Nürnberg, difficult to see in lower res scans of the arms. While finished I fear that I can not release my version, the filesize is well to big (+20MB), I'll have to work out a way to reduce that. But if you want to take a look or take it as reference to correct the errors of your depiction just follow this link: here --David Liuzzo (talk) 20:24, 8 October 2011 (UTC)

[edit] European Union coat of arms

Hello. first of all, impresionant and magnific job. I would like to ask you: How do you think could be a EU coat of arms in blue with the stars, and adding in my opinion the 2 heraldical symbols should appear : Eagle and lion, in the tradition of spanish lion, nordic lion, british lion, german eagle, byzantine and russian eagle etc? I think with just that 2 symbols, lion and eagle, it is possible to make a coat of arms that can be common to all member states, adding them to a coat of arms in blue with the stars. How do you think it can be done? Thnaks --BernardaAlba (talk) 11:15, 26 December 2011 (UTC)

Thanks! Having a lion and an eagle as supporters is an interesting idea I think. Sure, I could make such a version, but bearing in mind that all compromises reached at the EU level are the lowest common denominator - something everyone can agree with - having a lion supporter probably would infuriate republicans. Likewise, an eagle probably would be interpreted as being a symbol of Russia or Germany; something that easily could prove unacceptable for e.g. the Baltic countries. Symbolism is clearly a sensitive issue for European countries. - Ssolbergj (talk) 18:42, 27 December 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Technique for creating grey-green orthographic projection maps

Hi Ssolbergj,

I'm trying to create a grey-green orthographic projection map similar to the ones you have made (e.g. Asia (orthographic projection)). The file descriptions say you used the Generic Mapping Tools to create your maps, so I did that as well. The process generally works (something like pscoast -JG-105/75/15c -Rg -Ba30g30 -G185/185/185 -S255/255/PE=plain --POLAR_CAP=none -N1/0.01c,100/100/100 > test.ps), but when I open the PS file in Inkscape to edit and convert it to SVG, a couple of flaws become apparent: The land and sea areas are split into 10° x 10° tiles, with a large number of nodes on the boundaries, and the grid lines use a huge number of nodes where only a couple should be necessary. Merging the tiles using the Union operation fixes the tiling problem, and the grid lines can be cleaned up using the Simplify operation, but it's a bit tedious to have to select all the objects by hand and apply the necessary operations. Do you have a better approach or workflow for this?

Regards --Tentotwo (talk) 01:15, 19 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi Tentotwo, I selected all the grey land areas and merged them (union operation), and I didn't bother to simplify the country borders. :-P Regards - Ssolbergj (talk) 21:19, 19 January 2012 (UTC)
=) Okay, thank you very much. Love the style, by the way, and well done for starting something that has become such a common sight on Wikipedia (and in countless reports and presentations, I'm sure). --Tentotwo (talk) 23:36, 19 January 2012 (UTC)
No problem;) Thanks! I thought it was a bit amusing to watch as the first 9 maps i made (USA, Canada, Brazil, Russia, China, India, EU, Mexico and Australia) over a short period of time were placed, by random users, one by one into each of the articles of the world's biggest countries. When one editor tries to force a new standard into many articles at the same time, the edits tend to be reverted, so I deliberately didn't attempt to do it myself. I just chose the neutral grey, green and white colours that already were sortof traditional on Wikipedia, as well as that one, soft shading layer (made to fit specifically with the latitude lines on the first EU map) that is now in all of these files. - Ssolbergj (talk) 03:13, 20 January 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Spanish and Italian Naval Group

I´m sorry I cou,dn't get the motto of this unit. I'm doing the coats of arms of the Spanish Armed Forces (the Army is the most important in heraldic terms) There aren't information about this unit at the book and other sources that I'm reading (except at the Spanish Defence Website that you told me). I'm sorry. Have you taken a look at the Italian Defense Website or The Italian Navy website? Thanks you Regards --Heralder (talk) 20:17, 28 January 2012 (UTC)

[edit] File:European_flag_in_the_wind.jpg

Hi Ssolbergj,

I am interested in the Image http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:European_flag_in_the_wind.jpg?uselang=de that was apparently uploaded to en.wikipedia.org first by you, correct? Do you happen to have the raw image from the camera or anything else from this flag in a higher resolution? I am interested because a German member of parliament is using a visually very similar image and I want to rule out several scenarios on how he obtained it. -- Mathias Schindler (WMDE) (talk) 23:38, 30 January 2012 (UTC) You can reach me via mathias.schindler@wikimedia.de

update The image was deleted this morning by User:Yann, however I cannot find a deletion request in the archive. -- Mathias Schindler (WMDE) (talk) 12:54, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
