'Matijevic Hill' Panorama for Rover's Ninth Anniversary (False Color).jpg[edit]

Hi Stas, just curious, but why did you re-upload the same image as I did at File:'Matijevic Hill' Panorama for Rover's Ninth Anniversary (False Color).jpg? It's not a big issue, I'm just wondering if I missed something. Huntster (t @ c) 22:40, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

Hello, dear Huntster! It was my mistake: here is indicated the size of a picture 8,17 MB, but actually 7,79 MB; and I think it was upload higner-size image, but it's not so. --Stas1995 (talk) 13:29, 23 February 2013 (UTC)
Ah! Yes, it seems that JPL and Wiki calculate the file sizes differently for some bizarre reason. I've puzzled over this myself in the past (as well as puzzled over why the JPL Catalog images are compressed differently than the press release images, but are otherwise identical in every way). Take care! Huntster (t @ c) 15:03, 23 February 2013 (UTC)
Good luck! --Stas1995 (talk) 16:58, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

Welcome, Dear Patroller![edit]

Hi Stas1995,

You now have the Patroller right and may call yourself a patroller ! Please take a moment to read the updated Commons:Patrol to learn how Patrolling works and how we use it to fight vandalism.

As you know already, the patrolling functionality is enabled for all edits, not just for new-page creations. This enables us to keep track of, for example, edits made by anonymous users here on Commons.

We could use you help at the Counter Vandalism Unit. For example by patrolling an Anonymous-edits checklist and checking a day-part.

If you have any questions please leave a message on the CVU talkpage or ask for help on IRC in #wikimedia-commons.

Exact duplicates[edit]

Commons allows for different versions of the same image to be in place, so please don't mark as duplicate things like File:Gl581 radial velocity curve.jpg. The purpose of the speedy deletion is not to limit ourselves of one source of information, but solely to remove exact duplicates, see Commons:deletion policy. Where you think that a file is in error or should otherwise be removed, then please use a normal deletion request. thanks.  — billinghurst sDrewth 11:06, 26 May 2013 (UTC)

Star Wars[edit]

Saludos Marcoantoniothomas (talk) 13:26, 31 May 2013 (UTC)

Marcoantoniothomas (talk) 13:26, 31 May 2013 (UTC)

File:Comets and Shooting Stars Dance Over Paranal (wallpaper).jpg[edit]

Didn't know that there was all ready the large image elsewhere (they were in very different categories, the one didn't link to the other). The question now is, why is the presence of the wallpaper usefull? --C messier (talk) 16:52, 5 June 2013 (UTC)

Because wallpaper version (1920х1200) can be used in the design of the desktop, and the fullsize version (5828 x 3891) is preferred for articles and FP nominations. Regards, — Stas1995 (talk) 17:57, 5 June 2013 (UTC)
I still don't think that this is enough for a second file to exist similar to the other. Anyway, I connected the two images with "other versions". --C messier (talk) 18:12, 5 June 2013 (UTC)

Art of SLS launch[edit]

Your duplicate tag for Art of SLS launch - they are not exact duplicates... sats (talk) 00:00, 4 August 2013 (UTC)

Why? I want to get a detailed answer. — Stas1995 (talk) 10:13, 4 August 2013 (UTC)
You are most welcome, but it is no longer on the Duplicate page anyway.
  1. The colourings at the top of the rocket were different in the two photos.
  2. One had a difference in the top of the rocket

sats (talk) 12:05, 4 August 2013 (UTC)

Actually the best way of understanding the issue is that they are paintings - and the two separate images have represented the rocket colours and markings differently - so they are not 'exact duplicates' as the requirement for deletion insists. sats (talk) 12:11, 4 August 2013 (UTC)
ОK. But based on my eyesight and notice, I thought it was a duplicate. Now, based on your explanation, I found the differences between this pictures. — Stas1995 (talk) 12:19, 4 August 2013 (UTC)

Moving Commons:Featured picture candidates/... pages[edit]

Hi Stas, I just noticed this moving. It's ok, but to avoid problems it's much (much) better if you use the parameter |com-nom=[old name of the image] in {{Assessments}} template of the picture. Easier and safer. :-) Thank you, have a good day! — TintoMeches, 23:03, 25 August 2013 (UTC)

Hi Neptuul! I think that this picture will not be featured (2 support, 5 oppose). But if you do not agree, I revert my edit. For example: I closed my nomination (Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Belt of Venus over Cerro Paranal.jpg, 2 support, 1 oppose) although by the end of voting had 1,5 days because meaningless to keep it on the page nominations. NGC empty cat speedy[edit]

Hello Stas1995, while working the list of speedy candidates I noticed your NGC cat noms. I'm removing the speedy tags on those. The reason is that the empty cats are just a tiny fraction of the entire NGC set and it seems to me that some effort would be lost, as the empty cats are categorized by constellation and object type. I would prefer to keep the cats for potential future uploads. --Dschwen (talk) 16:25, 27 August 2013 (UTC)

I strongly disagree with you. No sense in leaving an empty category, because when suitable file will be uploaded user сreate it. Some of these categories are empty for three years. It would be best if you deleted these categories speedy. — Stas1995 (talk) 16:54, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
The category pages are not empty, so {{emptypage}} does not apply. The criteria for speedy deletion do not explicitly cover unpopulated categories. I can see no benefit in deleting these cats, as the do contain useful information on the cat pages. --Dschwen (talk) 17:10, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
Content of these empty categories (sush as «NGC 33 is a double star system in the constellation Pisces. It is located at RA 00...» must be placed in Wikipedia, not Commons. Generally, similar content acceptable in categories with files, but not in empty! Regards, — Stas1995 (talk) 17:25, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
Hm, I guess I won't be convincing you anytime soon, right? :-) Ok, you have made your point. I'll go ahead and nuke them. --Dschwen (talk) 17:46, 27 August 2013 (UTC)

Moving pages[edit]

Hey Stas, I noticed you've been moving file names to ones that are more descriptive. Good work on that, but if I may suggest, if an image has a NASA id or some other similar unique identifier, place it in parentheses at the end of the file name, such as File:Comet ISON by Hubble on 8 May 2013 (STScI-PRC2013-24).jpg and File:Centaur stage arrives at pad 36A for GOES-L mission (KSC-00PP-0421).jpg. This gives the benefit of having a completely unique and identifiable file name, and making it potentially easier to search by ID number (since I've found the Mediawiki search function sometimes ignores the ID in a template. Also, I notice that some of the names you give are somewhat short and may not be descriptive enough...don't be afraid to use longer names! It makes it easier for users to identify the contents at a glance. Again, these are just suggestions, take 'em or leave 'em. Keep it up, bud. Huntster (t @ c) 06:44, 5 November 2013 (UTC)

  • Okay. This is a good idea. Thank you for the tip. If I can find a ID, I'll rename so. Best regards, — Stas1995 (talk) 14:30, 5 November 2013 (UTC)

Consider overwriting[edit]

With these space images that we are continually replacing, have you considered with these exact duplicates that we can upload the higher quality image over the top of the existing image? Commons:Overwriting existing files covers this well.  — billinghurst sDrewth 01:08, 1 December 2013 (UTC)

Overwrite the image does not work if the size of subsequent file exceeds 100 MB. In other cases I do not see reason to leave bad-quality image in the archive of Wikimedia Commons. Secondly, if I overwrite file - it is not displayed in my contributions. Regards, St1995 09:40, 1 December 2013 (UTC)

File:Jewel of the Solar System.jpg[edit]

It seems you manually closed this nomination; but forgot to add some important entries ([2], [3]), and removed one gallery tag used by the bot. The bot is functioning now, so it is better to allow it for closing "featured" nominations; as it requires much efforts from our side for a manual closing. "Not featured" nominations can be manually moved to log, as it requires only single edit. If we miss an entry in Commons:Featured pictures/chronological/current month, it will not be available for POTY. Jee 03:46, 11 December 2013 (UTC)

Hmm, it seems Commons:Featured picture candidates/Set/Illustrations about the crystallisation in Naica for wikijunior too closed by you. Wait, I will do related entries soon. Jee 03:52, 11 December 2013 (UTC)

Fair use question on English Wikipedia concerning SOHO image[edit]

Hi, one of the SOHO images that was deleted from Commons and which I uploaded as "fair use" on the English Wikipedia has been nominated for deletion. I could use your input on the licensing issues involved, since I see that you have a presence on the English Wikipedia as well. See Wikipedia:Files_for_deletion/2014_January_12#File:Solar_storm_2003-10-26_.28SOHO-EIT_Ultraviolet_195_.C3.85.29.png

Picture of the Year 2013 R1 Announcement[edit]

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open![edit]

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on . Click here to learn more and vote »

Thanks,

Thanks for youre message[edit]

Well the picture i have uploaded is from the website of the producer himself. I asked them once half a year ago if it is oki to user their pictures freely and they agreed. I can not prove that now of course. They do not have any license agreement on their webpage. But the picture i used is widely spread on the internet[4], because this is a wordwide famouse product. And like for any other products the pictures wich are openly published are ment free to use. --Neutraler Neutralist (talk) 20:09, 4 April 2014 (UTC)

Tagging obvious copyvios[edit]

Hello,

Thanks for tagging copyvios. However, it would be better to tag obvious copyvios with {{copyvio}}, rather than with "no license", "no permission", etc. Additional, you can add a strong warning if a user has uploaded several copyvios. And you could also apply for adminship. ;o) Thanks again for your help, Yann (talk) 18:41, 5 April 2014 (UTC)

Hi! Thank for this message. I am going to follow these instructions and I will try to RFA during this month. Best regards, /St1995 09:38, 6 April 2014 (UTC)
