Hello Sten,

Are you sure Pyrus urumiensis (29 hits) species exists? Maybe this Pyrus ussuriensis (800 hits). Pixeltoo 19:42, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Image:Parrotia-persica1.JPG, Image:Parrotia-persica2.JPG[edit]

Davs Sten - these two are a Hamamelis sp., for comparison, Parrotia does not have petals, only red stamens (see e.g. [1], [2]). Would you be able to get new photos from the plants at Bispebjerg Kirkegård? (there are none near me that I can get photos of, unfortunately) - MPF 12:32, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Image: Onychiurus-on-Birch.JPG[edit]

Hello Sten, this picture definitely shows not Onychiurus sp., all these species are withe or yellowish, have no long antennae and are not found on trees but live in soil. According to the colour pattern, I would believe those you photographed are entomobryid Collembola, most probably from the genus Orchesella.

Hello! I do not think, that this really is Genista germanica, which should have branched spines like these and which I never saw to be that strongly spiny. Maybe I could determine, if I knew, where the photo was taken. Did you take it in Denmark or is it from somewhere in Spain? Regards --Franz Xaver 21:31, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

License info missing[edit]

Hi Sten,

Image:Salix-lanata-total.JPG and Image:Salix-lanata-leaves.JPG are missing license info. I know you always publish your own photos under this license, so I was already tempted to add this license, but it seemed more correct if you did it yourself.

kind regards,

Hi TeunSpaans,
I have now given new licenses to the two files. Please excuse any inconveniense!
Kind regards,

Overlay text in your images[edit]

Hello, Sten. Thank you for adding almost 700 images to the Commons in the past 2 years - your collection contains some beautiful images. I notice that almost all (about 50 or so without) of your uploaded media files contain credits in the content itself, either your name or a location and usually a date/month. Additional information in the image itself is discouraged on the Commons; see Commons:Manipulating meta data#Purpose for using EXIF at Commons. Almost all of your images have been tagged with {{watermark}} now, adding them to a category in which images that need to be cleaned up a bit have been placed. If possible, could you re-upload these images without the credits and/or not upload 'watermarked' image in the future? Thank you for your consideration. Siebrand 11:00, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

Now, first of all: Who's writing this?
While I do understand your dislike for name-taggings, I'm wondering what might be your reasons for discouraging any kind of tagging (in my case: with place and time)? Pictures of plants and habitats must carry an indication of their place and time to be relevant. However, not intending to be troblesome I am stopping my tagging of pictures. On the other hand we shall have to make do with the existing ones, since I have discarded the originals.--Sten 05:21, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
Sorry, forgot to sign. Did that. No disrespect intended.
If possible, please look into tagging and using EXIF. There are over 100 fields you can use to add information to and it is transferred with the image. I have no personal experience with tagging, and if you don't either, I'd be happy to look into it together. Greetings, Siebrand 11:00, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

categories for plant images[edit]

Hi Sten,

I saw you added "Caprifoliaceae" to an image I just loaded. Is that the general best way (i.e., adding to family categories)?

I ask because a lot of the plant species pages don't have catted images, but rather put them all on a gallery page and then add that to the category.

BTW: I've been adding captions to the photos with both descriptions and copyright... my main writing interest is on wikibooks and I prefer PD images for printing out (so I'll be loading up a lot more of them). There's nothing wrong with adding copyright status on gallery pages, is there? --SB_Johnny|talk|books 16:29, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

Just stepping in here: as far as I can see, you cannot license anything but your own images and contributions as PD. You cannot add a PD template to a content page, as they are GFDL by definition of the project. Once you have made PD contributions and another person had made GFDL contribution (default), the page can no longer be PD because of the viral nature of GFDL. Too bad, but that's how it is... If you are sure that the above image isn't a chestnut then the image Image:Chestnut tree, Thasos.jpg should also be moved since the first image is a closeup of the second. Image:Hemerocallis-citrina-flower.jpg[edit]

This is not Hemerocallis citrina, but Hemerocallis lilioasphodelus. User:Epibase

Hi Epibase, Thank you for the note. It is evident, that you are right taking it into consideration that H. citrina is a night-bloomer, while the picture was taken in the morning. On the other hand I may - perhaps - be excused by the fact, that the plant was named "H. citrina" in a botanical garden? I'm sorry that I can't change the name of the picture, but perhaps someone else (you?) can do that for me? --Sten 14:03, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

Hi!

Labels in botanical gardens can ve moved by visitors and the names are not always correct. Often they haven't been checked recently. We have the same thing here in Göteborg. I can reupload the images.

Image:Hosta-sieboldiana-total.JPG[edit]

The name is Hosta fortunei. H. sieboldiana has large, roundish glaucous (bluish) leaves.

-- Slaunger 09:02, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

Arnica montana[edit]

Hello Sten, Are you sur this Image:Arnica-montana-Bornholm.JPG is Arnica montana? To me, I'm sure it's not Arnica montana! Probably, it's Doronicum pardalianches... Bye User:Abalg

Hello Abalg, No, I am not absolutely sure about Arnica as an identification. In fact I had the idea that it might be Inula salicifolia. On the other hand I doubt that it can be a Doronicum (the leaves are elliptical and hairy). So how about Inula? Kindly --Sten 20:05, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
Hello Sten, You want to speak about Inula salicina! uhm.. I doubt... The flower is not very good to see, what disturb me, your image seems to show one small head with voluminous externals petals, while Inula has precisely fine and long externals petals. Furthermore the head of Inula salicina is very voluminous! After check, it is not Doronicum pardalianches, you are right! In effect, I do not know what is it ...excuse me abalg

Categories for images of species[edit]

Hi Sten; As MPF mentioned above, "[I]mages that are known with certainty to represent a particular species should appear in the species article, and not be categorized in any of the taxa categories." Please see the Images section of COM:TOL for more on this. If you'll give me a week or so, I will create species articles for the images I upload and will add those images to the new pages. If you beat me to it, that is fine too. Thanks, Walter Siegmund (talk) 11:37, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi Walter, I wasn't aware of these points, but I shall act in accordance with them in the future! And, by the way, you make excellent pictures!--Sten 18:54, 8 November 2007 (UTC)
Hi Sten; Thank you for making Ribes viscosissimum and Osmorhiza occidentalis. Nice work! What a pleasure to see your pictures of Århus Botanical Garden. They bring back good memories of my visit to Århus around 1982. I'd like to invite you to join Commons:Geocoding. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. question aboout using your picture[edit]

hello my name is Séamus Ó'Bric and i'm a secondary school teacher in Ireland. i am currently writing a text book for 13 -16 year olds in Science in Irish. i need colourful pictures for this and have found a

picture ideal for my project at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Grundorganer.JPG

that i'd like to use. this text book would hopefully be sold throughout ireland to irish speaking schools since no such text exists at the moment. i would therefore be very thankful if you could outline what i would need to do in order to use your picture. thank you seamus

Hello Mr Ó'Bric,
Being a great admirer of the Celtic languages I would be delighted, if you can find a use for my image in an Irish textbook. I would, however, suppose that the following version might suit your purpose better: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Grundorganer.svg
It is furthermore my own production, while the image you refer to was taken from an old, Danish textbook.
All you have to do will be mentioning that the image was created by me, and that it may be used by anyone under the GFDL license.
Respectfully,
Sten Porse

Bad category[edit]

Can you add some description to Image:Vinter.JPG, and perhaps correctly categorize it geographically or otherwise. For some reason, it's catted in ponds and Winter. The later I can see, but the mountain scene is a bit hard to buy as a pond! If nothing else, get it onto the right subcategories of Continents, and preferably, countries if not the proper municipality! Good thing to do for your whole gallery. Thanks, gives the rest of us a clue at least! // FrankB 19:06, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

Your welcome...
'KAy, sound good, so go 'fer' it. But at the least, annotate the picture with where (The five newspaper questions: Who, what, when, where, and why) would be a big help to others, otherwise may never get used, save perhaps for generic "Winter scene". More than one language too if you can handle that using the language templates ({{de}}, {{En}}, {{Fr}}, {{it}}, etc.). If the pond name is known, should also identify that too. That gives at least three cats right there, towm/city + pond + winter... four if you know the date. (Might be part of the camera data) // FrankB 00:58, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

Hello Sten/Archive 1!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. BotMultichillT (talk) 23:15, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

Carpinus-betulus-fruits.jpg[edit]

Hej Sten.

Tak for din opmærksomhed! Mvh.--Sten Porse (talk) 20:38, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

Oprydning mv.[edit]

Hej Sten!

--MGA73 (talk) 20:08, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

--MGA73 (talk) 20:02, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
Herligt at du orker at hjælpe. Mvh.--Sten Porse (talk) 20:11, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

Thasos-Ecology[edit]

hej Sten, would'nt it be better, to name this category "Flora" or "Vegetation"? -- Haubi (talk) 18:01, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

Sten, please help me in creating under category "Thasos" the subcategory "Flora of Thasos" and to combine there your pictures of "Ecology of Thasos" and the ones now under category "Flora of Thasos". Thanks! -- Haubi (talk) 16:13, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
Done!--Sten Porse (talk) 19:13, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
Please, Sten, give me a hint how to create an undercategory. -- Haubi (talk) 11:09, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
That's quite simple. First you put an article or a file into a new category (i.e. your coming subcategory), for example by categorizing your own picture Steinkistengräber im Gräberfeld Larnaki C.jpg as [[Category:History of Thasos]]. Then you make this new category into at subcategory by categorizing it into an existing category, for example by marking the new category History of Thasos as part of the existing category Thasos. In this way your own picture has been categorized as a member of the subcategory History of Thasos that is a member of the category Thasos. Et voilá, you have creared a subcategory! --Sten Porse (talk) 21:31, 30 May 2009 (UTC)
