Needle Galaxy 4565[edit]

Hi, I processed the OTRS permissions for File:Needle Galaxy 4565.jpeg. However, it was pointed out to me that you uploaded a new version minutes before I processed the request, which means the email with the permission was send prior tot he file upload.

I think everything is fine, but can you shed some light (so to speak) on the situation?--Sphilbrick (talk) 14:45, 2 December 2013 (UTC)

Then shall I request the author to sent one mote email?? Planet Herald (talk) 16:23, 2 December 2013 (UTC)
That would be best, and the ideal situation is that the email would specifically list the file name. The first email referred to it generically, and I used AGF that it was the same image.
If the subject line includes the OTRS ticket # 2013120110008158 it is help direct it to me.--Sphilbrick (talk) 16:45, 2 December 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Bird-eagle-flying-sky-wings-wallpaper.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the OTRS system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. (You can get a list of all your uploaded files using the Gallery tool.) Thank you.

Yours sincerely, JuTa 20:35, 12 January 2014 (UTC)

File:La Couronne 16 Château Oisellerie tour&tourelle 2013.jpg[edit]

Hi ! You asked for a change concerning the title of "File:La Couronne 16 Château Oisellerie tour&tourelle 2013.jpg". I'm sorry, but this title is not "meaningless", as it is possible to notice by reading the description (in French and in English) underneath the picture . The only queer things are the number (16, which means "Charente" for French users), and the "&" linking to words without any space. I've been using numbers and "&" this way for almost two years on Commons. So do I have to suppress your request or would you be so kind as to suppress it yourself ? Thanks in advance. -- Sorry for my English. -- Cheers. --JLPC (talk) 14:05, 28 January 2014 (UTC)

Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement[edit]

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open![edit]

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on . Click here to learn more and vote »

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

FP Nominations[edit]

Hi The Herald,
Please note that only two active nominations per user are allowed on FPC, you currently have four nominations. I have therefore tagged the last two nominations as FPDs, meaning that they will be removed from the list soon. Of course you are free to withdraw one or both of the earlier nominations and then remove the FPD tags as long as you comply with the guidelines.
Best regards, --DXR (talk) 19:13, 17 March 2014 (UTC)

Picture of the Year 2013 Results[edit]

The 2013 Picture of the Year. View all results »

Dear The Herald,

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

  • In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
  • In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

  1. 157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
  2. In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
  3. In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

We also sincerely thank to all 4070 voters for participating and we hope you will return for next year's contest in early 2015. We invite you to continue to participate in the Commons community by sharing your work.

Hi there. I deleted the image because the release statement said

"Material featured on this Portal may be reproduced free of charge after taking proper permission by sending a mail to us. However, the material has to be reproduced accurately and not to be used in a derogatory manner or in a misleading context. Wherever the material is being published or issued to others, the source must be prominently acknowledged. However, the permission to reproduce this material shall not extend to any material which is identified as being copyright of a third party. Authorisation to reproduce such material must be obtained from the departments/copyright holders concerned." (my bolding)

That is, essentially, a no-derivatives license, which means that it's not considered freely licensed. Since Commons can only hold freely licensed works, we can't have that image here. Apologies, Sven Manguard Wha? 18:18, 5 April 2014 (UTC)

(talk page stalker)IMO the above image could have gone to a deletion request rather than a no permission statement. However, the statement that no third party can lay claim to a derivative work is definitely a no-go in terms of copyright. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 18:50, 5 April 2014 (UTC)

Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or send an email with copy of a written permission to OTRS (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). This also applies if you are the author yourself.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, and Commons:Permission if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own.

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the OTRS-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:'Reflections on Past and Present, Paris', Ben Johnson, 1996, Acrylic on canvas, 254 x 203 cm.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

Use of image on your user page[edit]

Hi Herald, you are currently using File:Comet-Hale-Bopp-29-03-1997 hires adj.jpg and it has the same problem as I have already described at your wikidata talk page. Please fix this as outlined there. By the way, these requirements are the same over all projects so if there are more projects where your user page uses images in this fashion please fix those as well. Thanks and regards, -- ChrisiPK (Talk|Contribs) 11:54, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

@ChrisiPK: Hello and thank you. But I can access the file description page by right clicking the files on my user page. Fear why you can't do that? The Herald 14:13, 26 June 2014 (UTC)
No right clicks work for me. It must be like how you are using File:The Earth seen from Apollo 17.jpg. Or you can provide attribution at the bottom of your user page. Jee 16:37, 26 June 2014 (UTC)
Right click doesn't work for me either. Regards, -- ChrisiPK (Talk|Contribs) 21:20, 26 June 2014 (UTC)
Well in that case, attribution is the best. Can you show up a format for it or it will be better if you can go ahead with it on my user page. Thanx a lot..The Herald 06:02, 27 June 2014 (UTC)
"Comet Hale Bopp" © Philipp Salzgeber is used here under a CC BY-SA 2.0 AT license. (This may enough. Alternatively you may link to the source in Commons; but original source is more perfect.) Jee 07:09, 27 June 2014 (UTC)
Hi Herald, as per your request I made a change to your user page so that it now links to the file description pages. I chose to also include the link to the spiral image. While this is already clickable a large part of it is shadowed by the link to the Commons main page. Feel free to change the formatting or placement of the links, the current version is just a suggestion. Best regards, -- ChrisiPK (Talk|Contribs) 11:34, 27 June 2014 (UTC)
@ChrisiPK: & @Jkadavoor:..How's my En-wiki user page's attribution..?? The Herald 16:09, 28 June 2014 (UTC)
Enough; I think. :) Jee 16:16, 28 June 2014 (UTC)
Looks good to me. Regards, -- ChrisiPK (Talk|Contribs) 19:08, 28 June 2014 (UTC)
