Flickr images[edit]

Hi, the correct tag are {{GFDL-user-en|Ishihara}} and {{Cc-by-sa-2.5}}. I am quite confused by the author. At wikipedia the author calls himself Gisela Ishihara and on Flickr erasmo perez. This might be a copyright violation by the flickruploader. I am not sure what to do, I think I am going to put this on VP. -- Bryan (talk to me) 15:10, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply. I am confused also. The Flickr photos were uploaded there by erasmo perez around 12 hours after they were shot on July 30, 2006. But he has written there that Gisela Ishihara is the author of the photos.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/albatros/sets/72157594220106912/
erasmo perez also has an August 1, 2006 blog page with some of the photos, and he says there also that Gisela Ishihara is the author of the photos:
http://erasmoperez.blogspot.com/2006/08/544-fotos-por-la-democracia-tercera.html
I emailed erasmo perez, and gave him the link to this talk page. The 12 images are in the gallery images section on this page: Mexican general election 2006 controversies - I copied the 12 gallery images on that page from wikipedia to the commons.
Gisela Ishihara uploaded the 12 images to wikipedia on August 10-12, 2006. See her user contributions:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Ishihara
Maybe she gave permission to erasmo perez to upload the images to Flickr earlier with a non-commercial CC distribution license. Then she uploaded a few of the photos herself to wikipedia with the GFDL and Cc-by-sa-2.5 licenses so that we could use them. According to her user contributions she put the images on the wikipedia page too.
Here is a link to one of the images at wikipedia and wikimedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Img_1907.jpg
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Mexico_City_rally_7-30-06_3.jpg
I found erasmo perez with a Google search. His blog with his email address is here:
http://www2.blogger.com/profile/14722334928557346505
He lives in Mexico City where the rally photos were taken.
He talks about Flickr photosets on his blog pages.
Erasmo perez also uploaded other photosets marked as being shot by Gisela Ishihara. All were uploaded on different days in July 2006 soon after the photos were taken. So I assume erasmo perez has permission from Gisela Ishihara to upload the photos to Flickr. See:

Thank you for your research. I think the best thing to do is remove the flickr links from the image description pages and add an link to this talkpage. -- Bryan (talk to me) 18:08, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
Done! Thanks again. --Timeshifter 20:38, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
I received an email from erasmo perez confirming the permission given by his wife, Gisela Ishihara, when she uploaded the photos to wikipedia. --Timeshifter 01:59, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for all your work done :) There should be no problem now anymore. You might want to forward the e-mail to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org, so that the e-mail can be archived. -- Bryan (talk to me) 11:07, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
I forwarded it, and I CCed the forwarded email to erasmo perez too, so that he knows the permission was passed on to wikimedia commons. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do. I hope I have the info and links correct on the photos. --Timeshifter 13:02, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

We've received the email at permissions-commons, have the images already tagged with a specific license? If so, please tag them with {{PermissionOTRS|ticket=https://secure.wikimedia.org/otrs/index.pl?Action=AgentTicketZoom&TicketID=619933}} mentioning that I confirmed that the email was received. -- Drini 23:09, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

Yes, the images have been tagged with the license tags that Bryan said were correct: {{GFDL-user-en|Ishihara}} and {{Cc-by-sa-2.5}}. I also added the OTRS tag to all the images. Thanks. --Timeshifter 03:00, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

Incorrectly named categories[edit]

Hi! Sorry if you were already aware of this, but I wanted to tell you about the {{badname}} template. You can use it to mark incorrectly named categories (and other pages), like this one. That way it will be spotted faster. Just type {{badname|:Category:Correct name}} Best regards, --rimshottalk 12:17, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the {{badname}} template. --Timeshifter 17:08, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

Edit warring over Category:Satellite pictures of the Palestinian territories is not a good approach[edit]

Please don't edit war with user:Juiced lemon. Even if you're right, just walk away, let it go, let it stay the way he edits it and seek consensus. Reverting back and forth is grounds for a block for both reverters, even if one party is right and the other wrong. So please just surface the issues and gain consensus, don't edit war. Thanks. ++Lar: t/c 19:34, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

PS: just as a note it's Lar (short for Larry, see my user page here or anywhere) not Lars... no worries, it's not an uncommon mistake. No need to change it but wanted you to know ++Lar: t/c 00:33, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

EasyTimeline[edit]

Hey Timeshifter,

There used to be a really good index thing that showed all EasyTimelines on all Wikimedia projects. I think it was http://stats.wikimedia.org/EN/TimelinesIndex.htm . I don't know what happened to it, I'm going to see if it's available somewhere else or something because it was really useful. cheers --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 00:22, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

Yeah it seems like that useful page I remember is dead now. :( Very sad. I posted to wikitech-l but no one has said why it's broken or how it can be fixed. grr.
I don't have any experience creating graphs, sorry. Try asking at the Graphics village pump, or find an impressive looking graph that someone else has created and ask them how they did it. :) cheers --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 12:26, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

Tal Afar incident[edit]

Hello !

The image can be used as "fair use", since you'd discuss the image itself; however, the image cannot be hosted on Commons, only on Wikipedia en:. Also, the version hosted by Wikipedia should be small enough not to compromise the exploitation of the original image.

I have done a fait amount of writing to people to request release of material under Free licences. This image is very iconic, and is among the most notable by Chris Hondros; hence, from experience, I doubt that Hondros will be willing to release it as Public Domain. If you want to try and contact him, I'd suggest that you request the release of a scaled-down version of the image; stress that releasing a small version will not compromise the exploitation of the original image, and of course that the rights will be entirely preserved on the largest image.

Good luck ! Rama 08:41, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

Could you please make some copies in your userspace (e.g. User:Timeshifter/MediaWiki:Uploadform/ownwork) and fix them up as you see fit, then we can compare more easily? Golan heights[edit]

Commons is not the place for political arguements. In the last 40 years, Gollan Heights are in Israel, there is nothing to argue about it. You can see the categories for Lorraine and Alsece regions which both Germany and France call for ownership about them, but becaue now those regions are in France, they are in the categories of France. Netanel h 10:40, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

The Commons does not take sides. Neither do I. I put the images in the Golan Heights categories. Then I put the Golan Heights categories in both Israel and Syria categories. This way the Commons does not choose one over the other. --Timeshifter 23:26, 4 April 2008 (UTC)
It is much better, but waht about Alsece and Lorraine? Why aren't they under the categories of both France and Germany? Netanel h 17:34, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

{{Categorise}}[edit]

Hi Timeshifter!
Please tell me why did you mix up {{Categorise}} and {{CatDiffuse}}.
Another topic is that you just replaced the languagelinks. Note that the contents of Categorise/lang and CatDiffuse/lang is NOT the same!
hf --D-Kuru 07:35, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

It took a quite long time to read your answer, because I was occupied with a lot of work for a long time.
With "Note that the contents of Categorise/lang and CatDiffuse/lang is NOT the same!" I wanted to tell you this:
{{CatDiffuse}} (en) -> {{CatDiffuse/de}} ...
{{Categorise}} (en) -> {{Categorise/de}} ...
I changed {{Categorise}} because it was taking up too much space in my opinion.
I made it as big as it was, because people often neglect or just ignore small templates. In Category:Dogs you see what I want to tell you. Experience has shown me that big is better' on Commons if you want to avoid overflown categories. No matter if they got filled up by newbees or people who should know what they do.
I also think it looks better with the light blue background, and the image to the left.
You'r right it looks a bit better now. Even the picture is a bit small to catch someones eye.
Search for more categories here.
I can tell you that every new user will get lost in this jungle of different categories, because they don't know what they should search for. If you know where you can find different ctegories you don't need Category:CommonsRoot, because you know it anyway. The effect of this will be that people upload their media files and a) just put them in the main category, because they don't know what they can/should do b) leave them without any category. And thats not what we want them to.
We maybe should include a new image on the left side which makes it more obvious what we want. The current one doesn't tell the reader very much about what the purpose of this template is. I thought about something like this. I know it's a bit big, but - as I said - I think big ones are better if you want you can try to make it smaller.
Please tell me what you think about my suggestion.

Category:Structure diagrams[edit]

And how use native speaker this? In German are "Strukturdiagramme" a part of UML and I think it's a good possibility to subcategorize the diagrams cat (clearness). That's also the reason why I categorize some technical diagrams in Category:Technical diagrams. In my opinion the categories should be a tree and not such flat.--Ma-Lik 13:58, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Category:Diagrams, drawings, charts, graphs by theme?[edit]

You categorized Category:Diagrams, charts, graphs by theme in the cat Drawings. Is the nameing of the cat then right? In my opinion the category should named Category:Diagrams, drawings, charts, graphs by theme.--Ma-Lik 12:06, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

re: OK. I will reply in more detail later after I get some rest. One quick thing though. I have never understood the difference between distributional and membership maps of the world. --Timeshifter (talk) 02:19, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

I'd inferred distributional was 'demographic' termish, and ... memberships were sub-categories of international organizations... to which I just subcategorized it AND membership maps of the world. (I'm back btw, so yer 'OK' is belated. Perhaps I shoulda pinged. Sorry.) // FrankB 02:32, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

Brilliant thought![edit]

re: this message and Category:World maps by theme... though I'm finding there is haphazard organization structure there already for those belonging to international organizations, which I will opine further, is likely to be the majority. Suspect it returns to a question DK and I kicked around about how many categories is right and proper. From what I've been seeing, many cat to parents or grandparents and don't look for an appropriate maps category at t'all, at all— so to speak.

So my take has been that it is happening because too little is annotated about what goes in a cat, so I digs and make an edit like this... this for what is probably a soon to be discarded organization, or this and this to build the category structure such should have and force into a proper maps cat respectively. The other thing I think important in the parent categories is to pipesort maps into "|Space theme name" pipe sorting — so the Maps category tree "hits people" in the eye.

However, I hadn't thought of it in terms of an overall strategy, but was just handling cases that didn't have proper places. So kudos! Good thought. What if we extend to regional maps by theme? Makes sense in international organizations from what I can see. Roughly (by impression, which is to say a guess) there is a 50:50 split with one potential wrinkle... as illustrated by this diff where I <Brainfart!> initiated left the redlink cat Multiregional international organizations that someone else had tagged several images with. (Obviously I was ambivilant on that one... guess I figured we could consolidate later if it turned out to be a non-productive classification. Does fit within [[Category:maps of regions by themes]] and I would advise maps of the world by theme would be a better name than your redlinked "World maps by theme". Gotta run. Taxi Dad time again. // FrankB 22:52, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

Category:Location maps (2008 standard)[edit]

Sorry 'bout the delay...

re: Category:Location maps (2008 standard) is a newly-created category. Should this be called Category:Locator maps (2008 standard) instead. I haven't categorized much in this area. Locator or Location or both? I am not sure it is a good idea to use both. It seems "locator" is the standard here: Category:Locator maps. See also: Category talk:Location maps (2008 standard) and User:NordNordWest. I think it is a language thing. Maybe we should call the category something like Category:Locator maps (2008 geolocation standard). See w:Geolocation --Timeshifter (talk) 21:31, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

I left a note on the project page on the German wiki about that just now (and ammended that before closing this!). For what it's worth, there is a discussion on that page that links back to a commonsFrench wp page here on standard color schemes for maps, apparently that began on the French wikipedia, then was moved here. here w/o using Meta or Commons international forums. Sigh.
To address your question directly, Locator maps predominates as was put in place by Deusentrieb, David Kernow et. al., and I questioned the originator of "Location maps" about ten days back (User talk:NordNordWest) and didn't get a response. ... he replied on his talk... I've updated my post linked above on that basis... See the template on en.wikipedia...
I was aware of the programable ability on some maps on en.wikipedia, but not being a maps graphics manipulator, hadn't realized the scope of the system being put in place internationally, so to speak. The upshot is that it looks like 'Locator' and 'Location maps' are both needed and that there needs to be a differentiation tagging and link template, more than anything else. It happens the technical difference is (I infer, but could be wrong) rectilinear equality of N-S and E-W axes, which gives an equal area projection—a format invented here in Massachusetts that I happened across a long while back now—in all places, in my kids pediatricians' offices! He's a mapophile. Unlike a Mercator projection, both Lat and Long curve, so it doesn't swell the size of things at higher latitudes (compare the shape of any landmass above 40 degrees north on a world map to a globes tracings). It's technically close in effect to a hemispherical projection from directly overhead, but zoomed in close so like a globe, it shows the true shape of the region on which it is centered. So there is a big technical difference, to which is added apparently that one can display an overlay of a "location dot" by specifying a correct and compatible geo-coordinate.
Other than that, just make sure they are subcategories of locator maps categories, and the hierarchy should shake out fine... discounting the SVG maps ambiguities rampant in the whole schema.
Visiting Category talk:Location maps (2008 standard), you seem to have found the right guy to deal with on this... from what I read on that de.wikipedia page, his English is good and I was going to close this and ask him if he'd help come up with a template. The only concern I have on all this is these projects are acting independent of international discussion forums, and if they are setting up standards, they need to invite more people to the table. // FrankB 20:31, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

Do it... I'm working on the prototype template on the German de page as I write. // FrankB 21:04, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

Language for gallery titles[edit]

Consolidating discussion in one place. --Timeshifter (talk) 21:34, 26 December 2009 (UTC)

Hi! I reverted your edits on the Deutschland/Germany gallery. The Gallery guideline states that "unlike naming categories, where English is almost always used, galleries should be named in language most associated with the subject." --Apalsola tc 12:07, 26 December 2009 (UTC)

Hi. Commons:Galleries#Naming conventions says "For general subjects and ones not tied to any specific language, the name most likely to be searched for (usually English) should be used."
Most people will be searching for "Germany." It is a country name, and seems like a general subject to me. Very few people will be searching for "Deutschland" in my opinion. --Timeshifter (talk) 21:35, 26 December 2009 (UTC)
Well, we have country gallery pages such as België - Belgique, Sverige, Brasil, Italia, España and even Россия, Ελλάδα, ประเทศไทย, 日本 and 中国 (and many more), so the common practice clearly is to use the native language in country gallery titles. There are redirect pages for English and other languages, so the people searching for "Germany" will find the right article.
And let's keep the discussion in one place (it was started here). I have your talk page in my watchlist, so I will notice any replies. --Apalsola tc 01:35, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
Only a few people will figure out what these galleries are about: Россия, Ελλάδα, ประเทศไทย, 日本 and 中国. Redirects from other languages to galleries with English names are a better solution in my opinion.
#REDIRECT [[ENGLISH NAME]]
Many more people will be able to browse the Commons directories and subdirectories and figure out what the galleries are about. Because English is the more universal language. People can use the sidebar search and Special:Search to look for Россия, Ελλάδα, ประเทศไทย, 日本 and 中国. They will see those names in the search results.
Can we copy this discussion to Commons talk:Galleries? It looks like similar discussion is occurring there. The Commons is about browsing, and not just searching. English significantly helps browsing. More people will find things when English is used most of the time for titles. I mean, do you want to browse when the gallery names are in many languages?
There is a tool that is helpful. Check out the language selector in this category:
Category:Israeli West Bank barrier
What language do you see there? I see the English introduction openly visible for me, and the other languages closed up, and only visible after clicking the "show all" button or entering a 2-letter language code. --Timeshifter (talk) 05:54, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
I have set English as my default language, so I see the English version.
My point is that as long as we have the policy to use native language titles for galleries, we should follow that policy. Languages seem to be highly political issue for many users (I'm not talking about you), so I see it very important to follow the policies we have to avoid edit wars etc.
Having said that, it might be a good idea to change the policy in a way that the English names would be used also in gallery titles as they are (or at least should be – there are many categories in other languages) used in category titles. So feel free to start a new discussion in Commons talk:Galleries. (I don't see a point to move this discussion because this is about following the present policy, not about changing it.) Another problrm[edit]

Hi, somebody uploaded a bunch of photos of Erykah Badu, but they still bear a watermark. I don't know anything about removing that kind of thing.. would you be willing to remove it from the following photo for me? The picture of her on en.Wikipedia is really bad. I asked User:Herby for help with this, but he says he doesn't have the time for it. It's this one: [2] Thanks so much for being helpful; can you respond on my talk page? Thanks. --Leahtwosaints (talk) 23:17, 5 December 2010 (UTC)

Economic maps[edit]

Hi, i noted you cancelled my contribution in categorizing "Economic maps". I have to specify that i was only trying to make some order in category, because economic maps is categorized both under "maps by theme" and "demographic maps", but the last is a subcateogry of the first creating a sort of recursive categorization. Effectively i don't know enough the matter to suggest a good categorisation, even if could be a good idea to remove "economic maps" from category "demographic maps", maybe suggesting in both the descriptions some link to the other one (that probably is related to). Could this be a good suggestion? Ciaurlec (talk) 22:44, 6 January 2011 (UTC)

COM:AN[edit]

Please do contribute here. See ya. Orrlingtalk 00:15, 20 October 2012 (UTC)

I don't understand how they could impose closure on that early thread. Can you explain how just anything there was related to "CFD"? That topic is entirely and solely to do with user's behaviour, and rule violations; enlighten me as to where else if not on Admins' noticeboard that one ongoing (and escalating) matter should be housed. Thankz. Orrlingtalk 06:55, 20 October 2012 (UTC)

I think some of the individual non-Palestinian-related category discussions could happen at COM:CFD. It may not be the best place, but it is a start. It may pull in more discussion than using category or user talk pages. Then if admin, or other, misconduct continues to occur, some specific cases could be brought to COM:AN, and some links from there could point to specific COM:CFD discussions. COM:AN is considered a last resort.
I think the main discussion concerning Palestinian-related categories needs to happen in one location. I suggest here: Commons:Requests for comment/Palestine and Palestinian territories. Otherwise we will be repeating these Palestinian-related category discussions multiple times in many locations, and many people may not know about previous discussions, agreements, participants, and background info. --Timeshifter (talk) 00:45, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
All good. Nothing of this, however, is connected to the actual circumstances where I was brought to resort at the AN by an ongoing user's misbehavior you were not even aware of. Pointing out that Palestine-related discussions need to happen in one location – while on-its-face very correct – can't replace the attention to the fact that fundamental rules of conduct are being abused almost daily by that user, probably not only where I'm involved; Palestinian categories are not the only space where they abuse their authorities on Commons! If I'm right, then the CFD is for discussing a category not a user's behavior, is it? So when a sanction holder (e.g category "lock") employs that sanction while being directly involved in a given session this is only for our Admins to process, right?
As to the "Commons:Requests for comment" I need to understand what this platform is for (that is, why not, for instance, Village Pump or CFD). See you soon. Orrlingtalk 12:42, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
Both you and Foroa are not native English speakers, I believe. So it is oftentimes difficult to understand what you are trying to say. Same for Foroa. Also, some Commons functions are hard to understand even for native English speakers such as myself. It is especially difficult when multiple issues are discussed at the same time.
I don't understand the background for this. So I have little idea of what you are talking about. It looks like some difference of opinion concerning categories. Please don't spend time explaining it just to me here. The first place to go is COM:CFD, and explain the issues there. That way anybody can get involved, and all sides can carefully explain the issues involved with those categories.
Each category issue needs to have a separate discussion clearly explaining things at COM:CFD. Even if it concerns admin misconduct concerning that category issue it needs to start at COM:CFD first. Otherwise, there is no background info that others can start with and easily understand.
See Commons:Requests for comment for more info on how all that works. It is preferred to the Village Pump or COM:CFD because the URLs are permanent, and so discussions can last much longer, or even forever. The discussion can restart at anytime also, even after long periods without discussion. This is much better than short-term discussions at the Village Pump. COM:CFD is for more specific category discussions. Commons:Requests for comment/Palestine and Palestinian territories is a broader, longterm discussion. --Timeshifter (talk) 02:31, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

Invitation to tech chats[edit]

Hi! I saw that you're interested in the software side of Wikimedia, and I wanted to invite you to watch and participate in our live tech chats, which include video streaming. The next one is next week and you'll be able to watch, live, via screensharing, as a developer fixes a bug, including investigation, a git commit, getting it reviewed and merged, and closing the Bugzilla ticket.

Hope this is of interest! Best wishes, Sumana Harihareswara, Engineering Community Manager at WMF (talk) 16:50, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

Big hug[edit]

I just think there's a small inaccuracy reflected in your paragraph there argumenting that if they'd blocked me for my edits at User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands, "then there is some justification according to this in the "warnings" section of that talk page: "If you challenge a request added here, please simply remove it and kindly inform the requester of your reason for doing so.".." and so on. – viewing the log and basing on the actual order and manner in which things eventuated I'm not sure what you meant to say: I posted the move request, and it was deleted without feeding the bot with that command and on the other hand without supplying any clear notice or reasoning whatsoever, anywhere! :) This repeated twice untill I approached their own talkpage to notify about a removal being uncustomary.. That means no one can blame me about anything relating to actions at the MovecatBot :) It looks more likely they've blocked me for reverting an impudent user talking impolitely on my talkpage. Arrrrgg.. Orrlingtalk 01:24, 23 November 2012 (UTC)

Following the Category:Red ensigns issue[edit]

Look at that user's disability to discuss - Last "comment" they replied to the attempt to discuss the topic (this), you were actually right about them having some communication bug, but again, are you sure he/she is an **administrator**..? Given this communication phenomenon this is quite doubtful; would you suggest I should also inform the admin from my talkpage with the link to the recent refusal to discuss? (the one that asked me to reach an agreement with the user) Orrlingtalk 08:56, 23 November 2012 (UTC)
