Hello UpstateNYer/Archive!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Commons images are used by editors on many projects in many languages. Each image is put into categories. This helps other editors find them. Please add categories to each image you upload.

To add an image to a category, add the following code to the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbit of comets, add the following to the image description page:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories: Astronomy diagrams, Comets.

For further information on categories read Commons:Categories.

The CommonSense Tool often helps you find the best category for your image.

Here is a gallery of your images. Please check that each image has a category. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the help desk. Thank you.

 • Yes, I always categorize my images and typically give them very thorough captions (complete with linking). This one was uploaded recently as an edit for an FPC nom at Wikipedia. I updated it though. upstateNYer 15:45, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

White House Picture

I added a new photo to the whitehouse page, replacing the old one on commons. Do you know how I can edit the page so that I'm accredited as the photographer and the author?

Also - for some reason images on image pages now appear in full size when I view them, rather than more convienient viewing sizes. Do you know how I can fix this? HiraV (talk) 21:14, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

Question

Hi UpstateNYer. Is it fine for you if I move User:UpstateNYer/Rollback to Template:User rollback? Thanks, --Kanonkas(talk) 14:25, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

Yea, go for it. I didn't know policy here and didn't want to build a template that would ultimately go up for TfD. upstateNYer 14:40, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
✓ Done. --Kanonkas(talk) 16:56, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

Pieter

Please don't mind Pieter. Sometimes he is OK and sometimes he has fairly strange ideas. I'm sorry I forgot to make my comment here earlier. You can always ask an Admin like Yann or Kanonkas to delete your duplicates if you show your replacement images. It helps you escape the tediousness of a formal DR. --Leoboudv (talk) 07:05, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up. But I did ask Yann and he only deleted the ones that were blatant duplicates (i.e. the exact same file, byte for byte). He didn't delete this or the others I've put up for deletion and gave no explanation as to why. So I was forced to nominate them for deletion. upstateNYer 15:08, 19 April 2009 (UTC)
 • I did not see that. Yes, that can be a problem. I guess a DR is the way to go sadly. You should say here this is a good faith uploader request and more people will be inclined to vote delete after they see the replacement image. Cheers and congratulations on your great work, --Leoboudv (talk) 00:05, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

Flickr reviewer!

Good day. As a result of your request at Commons talk:Flickr images/reviewers, I have added you to the reviewers list. Please see the instructions at Commons:Flickr images/reviewers and add user trusted to your userpage. You can ask me if you need any help. Best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 12:48, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

UpstateNYer, congratulations! You now have administrator rights on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and Commons:Deletion requests), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons on irc.freenode.net. There is also a channel for Commons admins, which may be useful for more sensitive topics, or coordination among administrators:#wikimedia-commons-admin.

You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references.

Good luck. Please ask if you need help... ++Lar: t/c 21:20, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Another county

Hey UpstateNYer, congrats. I've uploaded the maps for Albany county. Example. Feel free to fix anything and add cats (I'm not sure how you like to organize NY). Cheers, ZooFari 20:46, 25 June 2009 (UTC)

And can you delete this‎ and this? ZooFari 20:50, 25 June 2009 (UTC)

Go for it! ;-) ZooFari 00:36, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
Thanks, ZooFari 21:01, 25 June 2009 (UTC)

My only issue with the new maps is that they're missing the villages. In fact, they're missing Green Island, which is both a village and a town at the same time. See File:Green Island Albany.png. Any way to include these villages? In Albany County, they are important (many of the villages are essentially mini-cities, like Menands). Sorry to be picky :-/ upstateNYer 06:39, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

Updating won't be a problem, but I need a reference map to do so. Actually, I used this for the reference, so I can use that. I used this high res pic for the border, but the town borders aren't shown. Are those all villages you want or is the map missing some? Also, do you want the villages dotted like the Rensselaer county or normal borders like the others? ZooFari 22:37, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
Alright, I'll have to break this down. It's missing some cities, which are essential. Let's do the villages with dotted lines again. Think you can make a map with each village highlighted too? (and maybe do the same for Rensselaer County?)—they each have an article, so the maps would be used:
 1. Watervliet: city (solid border)
 2. Cohoes: city
 3. Green Island: town (solid border)
 4. Menands: village (dotted border)
 5. Ravena: village
 6. Colonie (village): village
 7. Altamont: village
 8. Voorheesville: village
upstateNYer 16:55, 27 June 2009 (UTC)
Okay, but first let's do Rensselaer county to get it out of our way, than we can do Albany. For Rensselaer, the only request is for extra versions for the dotted regions, right? ZooFari 17:09, 27 June 2009 (UTC)
Hoosick Falls
Ok, just so you know, I made a category for each village in Rensselaer and Albany counties: Category:Villages in Albany County, New York and Category:Villages in Rensselaer County, New York. upstateNYer 19:17, 27 June 2009 (UTC)
Okay, I'll work on them sometime today. I just came from the Spanish Wikipedia world and my mind is lost (too different)... ZooFari 19:59, 27 June 2009 (UTC)

Alright, versions done. Except I can't tell if it really worked. I'm sick of the thumbnail issue. Meanwhile I'm gonna start updating the second county... ZooFari 03:33, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
Of the two conjoined regions on this map, which one is Ravena? ZooFari 18:58, 22 July 2009 (UTC)
Hmmm, good question. Based on a quick Google Maps search, I'm going to say it's the one that's on the eastern border (on the Hudson River). Their homepage lacks a map, which seems stupid to me. upstateNYer 20:38, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

The one on the eastern border is Coeymans, the one on the left is Ravena.148.78.249.33 06:25, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

Something in your neck of the woods

1759 manuscript plan of attack for the Battle of Ticonderoga, restored.

Hi UpstateNYer, here's an intriguing tidbit of your local history. Several months ago I restored a manuscript British preparatory map for the Battle of Ticonderoga. The lower right hand corner contains detailed attack plans (which weren't actually carried out because the battle went much more easily than expected). After this image got featured another editor raised the article about the battle to FA. Yet these attack plans aren't mentioned in the article text because none of that editor's research sources mentioned them. There's a chance that this primary source has been overlooked by historians in the field; if that's so then the discovery would be worth publishing off-wiki in a reliable source. Even if this isn't quite so new the site has become a historic park; the management would be interested in a restored featured picture and might donate other digitized files to Commons.

It's very difficult to follow up on this properly from California; seems right up your alley though and perhaps a pleasant change of pace from recent events. Interested? Durova (talk) 04:12, 28 August 2009 (UTC)

Thank you very much for the consideration, in all sincerity. Right now I have a few articles I'm working very hard on, so don't really have the time to get up to Fort Ticonderoga (even from here, it's quite the distance) or add to its article. And to be honest, the Revolution doesn't really interest me, Dutch colonial times seem to though. Thank you for your kindness though. :-) upstateNYer 05:01, 28 August 2009 (UTC)
Actually that's French and Indian Wars, but no hurry. BTW am currently restoring a Dutch map of New York Harbor from 1739. Durova (talk) 14:49, 28 August 2009 (UTC)

Redirects from your old ID

At Commons we typically leave redirects from your old ID so as to avoid confusion or give the impression that there is something to hide. I've undone your removal of these. If there is a strong reason not to have them please discuss it, privately if you like (you know my email) ++Lar: t/c 11:17, 31 August 2009 (UTC)
