Junction+crossing[edit]

Hi, I created File:BSicon exkSTRg+l.svg recently, based upon your File:BSicon kSTR+l.svg. I can't remember why I put a "g" in the file name; it may have been a simple typo. Should it be renamed to File:BSicon exkSTR+l.svg; if so, how?

My plan is to create seven more red curves, and seven more pink curves; then eight dark blue and eight light blue curves, so that the various junction shapes missing from Category:Icons for railway descriptions/junction+crossing can be built up when required by using the overlay feature. To do this I need to name them correctly. Considering only the red curves, I am pretty sure of three names:

What would be the names for the other four red shapes - left middle to right top/bottom, and right middle to left top/bottom? Once I have these names, the colour variants will naturally be prefixed "ex", "u" or "uex" as applicable. --Redrose64 (talk) 12:46, 9 January 2011 (UTC)

Actually your naming is better than mine, I renamed File:BSicon kSTR+l.svg to File:BSicon kSTRg+l.svg. That would mean that the other three 'vertical' shapes would be:
The four 'horizontal' shaped icons should be named:
In notice however that one of those already exists. I try to figure it out! Wiebevl (talk) 09:52, 10 January 2011 (UTC)

rename needed[edit]

Happy New Year :)

New Year, new job, there are still some "parallel icons" that need a decent name including the "v"-prefix, e.g. 20px (File:BSicon exSTRel.svg). Groetjes axpdeHello! 08:02, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

You too :-)

Actually, those were duplicates, I marked them and put them on the delete candidate list. Wiebevl (talk) 19:07, 17 January 2011 (UTC)

You're welcome :-) In the process I added the other 6 configurations of this icon. Wiebevl (talk) 08:01, 8 April 2011 (UTC)
What makes this icon different from   (vuxSTRr-xKRZo)? Please comment here. Useddenim (talk) 03:10, 18 September 2011 (UTC)
And now   (vuxSTR+l-xKRZ) &   (vxSTRl-uxKRZ): any particular reason that you are insisting on creating new icons with bad names? Useddenim (talk) 00:38, 19 September 2011 (UTC)
These mixed icons are at least consistent in naming among each other. I'm not insisting on creating new icons with bad names as you put it. If you have a better name, feel free to suggest it and be a little more collaborative please. I created and renamed hundreds of icons so don't be so patronizing. Thank you. Wiebevl (talk) 11:00, 19 September 2011 (UTC)
This question was also raised at Talk:BSicon/Renaming#vSTR-KRZ naming consistency, where all the posted opinion favours (exvuSTRr-KRZo) over (vuxSTRr-xKRZo). Well-established naming conventions use ex to indicate both lines disused. The only instances where individual xs are used within an icon name are complicated ones where there are more than two elements that need to be differentiated between, which does not apply in the current case. Useddenim (talk) 11:52, 19 September 2011 (UTC)
Fine, do you have a good way of reverting the name change? It doesn't work. Wiebevl (talk) 09:47, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
I guess us lowly filemovers will have to wait for axpde or some other admin to take care of it. Useddenim (talk) 12:48, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
The others are changed btw and some new added. Wiebevl (talk) 12:58, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

Icon request[edit]

Can you create metrorail version (dark blue #003399) of this file BSicon vxABZg+l-KRZ.svg , but without left up light blue not in use section. Thanks in advance. --Triglav 2000 (talk) 12:02, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

That would be this one: BSicon uvSTR+l-KRZ.svg, however you could also use combination of BSicon udSTR+l.svg & BSicon udKRZ.svg. Cheers! Wiebevl (talk) 13:09, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, I have another request. Can you create combined version of this two icons BSicon uSHI1+r.svg + 20px , BSicon uSTRlg.svg + rotatted -90° BSicon uvSTRg+l.svg and this one rotated -90° BSicon vSTRr-STR.svg in dark blue metrorail version. --Triglav 2000 (talk) 13:16, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

File:BSicon vSTRlf-rotccw90.svg[edit]

This is a more consistent name, therefore the file is renamed. Since the redirect is not in use it can be safely removed. Wiebevl (talk) 07:33, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
The File:BSicon vSTRlf-rotccw90.svg is in use .... by the way - not in use is no reason to delete a redir. They should only be deleted if they are wrong (e.g. the wrong species at biology pictures). This was just inconsistent. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 18:45, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
This BSicon is only used on a talk page archive and on an "automated list of everything". The name of this BSicon is complete nonsense, obviously invented by someone unable to understand German or the consisting naming scheme. Therefore it is neccessary to delete those files/redirects to avoid new BSicons with similiar names! axpdeHello! 22:39, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
Fully agreed, Axpde. This is one case where name stability is trumped over by the “danger” that bad (=inconsistent, uncenventional) names, once allowed to persist even as redirects, will inspire hesitant creators of new icons to misname them (ppl such as me!).
Those two uses Saibo links to can be dealt with by
  1. changing the said archived discussion (with a note, for record sake), and
  2. ignoring the “automated list of everything” (edited by me) because it is… automated (and) the STRlf-rotccw90 row will go away anyhow, as there’s only one icon using that name.
--Tuvalkin (talk) 00:52, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
I do not see how a single "non-standard" redir which is only used on two dead pages can lead to other bad names. I am not into this BS icon stuff so you got me two by one. ;-) Okay. And I do not care about this file. But please step back from redir deleteion of other files if possible - as a general reminder. And: use a rename comment next time please. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 00:58, 22 June 2011 (UTC)

file move[edit]

Hi Wiebevl,

what do you think about this file move. IMHO the old name was ok ... a×pdeHello! 15:55, 15 August 2011 (UTC)

RDTs that use this icon have already been changed, and it was one of the few "vt" icons that hadn't been corrected (probably because it had been hiding behind a redirect). Useddenim (talk) 19:46, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
Hmmm, usually "vt" is the correct order if there is only one root ID following, but as I said long time before, I won't intervene with all "v" icons, that's Wiebevl's job ;-) a×pdeHello! 20:51, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
"vt" was the preferred order. There were some "tv" icons however. But naming them all "tv" is at least consistent. Wiebevl (talk) 09:40, 16 August 2011 (UTC)

Hello, Vunz!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

BSicon TUNNELa legende & BSicon TUNNELe legende[edit]

What is the purpose of these two new icons? They appear to serve the same purpose as PORTALf and PORTALg (except that there is a gap with the new icons). Useddenim (talk) 04:07, 29 September 2011 (UTC)

Since the PORTALf was not in de the Category:Icons_for_railway_descriptions/legende and there was a very crappy (even in the wrong configuration)   (TUNNEL legende) I considered them not present. I think TUNNELa legende is the correct name, PORTALf fits better. Wiebevl (talk) 08:23, 29 September 2011 (UTC)
Sorry, that was my bad. In the past I have been criticized for tagging icons into too many categories, so I have been concentrating on ensuring that they are listed on the appropriate Catalog of pictograms page. I used PORTAL because that was the feature name; all TUNNEL icons are also associated with a STRetch of track. If you have no objection, I will replace the usage of TUNNEL* legende with PORTAL*. Please note that the (indeed crappy, in terms of its SVG,) version of   (TUNNEL legende) was meant «to “daylight” a station on a tunnel» as said at en:Wikipedia:Route diagram template/Catalog of pictograms/others#Bridges, portals, overpasses and other formations — it being thus not a tunnel, but a “non-tunnel”. As is is depicted now, the overlay would enclose a short tunnel, instead of a short “uncovered” portion of a tunnel, as intended — the portals need to be swapped, and maybe a better name found (OBL, from de:Oberlicht?).

As for that current design of   (TUNNEL legende), of a short tunnel, I cannot see how it woould be used as an overlay, since the track needs to be partially dashed to match.

(Also, I just noticed that template BS2-2 (and O22!!) is not avaliable in commons. Also, this discussion should be centralized.)

--Tuvalkin (talk) 12:39, 30 September 2011 (UTC)

I just found   (BHFCC) and   (BHF+TUNNEL). Still, having these as overlays may be necessary, for unexpected combinations (used   (ACC) above as example)--Tuvalkin (talk) 12:56, 30 September 2011 (UTC)

Parallel rail proposal[edit]

I've been working on a new, all-encompassing BSicon naming scheme, and I'd appreciate some thought on a preliminary version of the naming scheme for parallel lines. The goal here is to narrow as much as possible the use of "combo" names and eliminate the dash as a prefix/suffix. Circeus (talk) 16:20, 9 October 2011 (UTC)

My main question is, why would we want that? I agree that combo names can be long, but they're pretty easy to understand whereas your proposed naming scheme is rather difficult (i.m.o.) Vunz (talk) 08:39, 10 October 2011 (UTC)
While not all the parallel line icons are a problem, there CERTAINLY are who are. Let's list issues I have (aside from my finding dashed names very inelegant):
  • The irregular curves are a messy system bordering on the incomprehensible.
- Which are the one you mean?
  • Dashed icon names conflict with the use of the dash as a connector.
- Where is the dash used as a connector?
  • Elimination of multi-letter suffixes like -r2l/-l2r is a key part of my proposal as a whole
- I don't like numbers in the suffixes either
  • There is no reason to keep icons like   taking up useful names in the BS2 root over things like  .
- There is no reason to have icons like  , since you can achieve the same with two half width icons, but changing   to something else is fine.
  • The conceit of not using v- for icons "piled up" instead of squeezed side to side is a conter-intuitive disconnection between otherwise identical icons.
- I don't get what you're aiming at sorry.
  • Stuff like   (vSTRr-xKRZ) or   (vKRZl-KRZr) is nowhere near being what they ought to be if they actually were following the system started off with   (vSTR-uSTR).
  • We already have a full system to deal with icons having two lines with different details, it's used in the KRZ and TBHF icons, why renounce it for the parallel line icons? Pointedly ignoring m- in parallel lines has no justification to me.
  • Since I'm already changing so many names, I want to ensure that parallel lines that use changed roots (i.e. SBRUCKE, WYE...) are consistent with the new names!
Circeus (talk) 14:55, 10 October 2011 (UTC)
All in all I don't know what we might get ourselves into by changing the names, but make sure the name change is al least consistent! Vunz (talk) 09:01, 17 October 2011 (UTC)
