Massive cat moves[edit]

Hello, you are flooding my watchlist with changes that I cannot understand and therefore that I cannot share and would revert if you cannot explain them. I am talking about things like this one, where you change from a detailed category that follows a well-known convention to a very general category that should be much higher in the category tree. Regards, Poco a poco (talk) 22:41, 31 January 2013 (UTC)

I was guided by the description in Category:2012 in Germany: This category includes works, events and everything related to the history of Germany in 2012. - Notes: 1. This category is NOT intended ONLY for photographs taken in 2012, nor is it intended for media uploaded or scanned in 2012, as the parent Category:Germany by year goes in time past the invention of photography, scanners or computers. For the specific scope of photography, please see Category:Photographs by year.
So I thought and still think, that on photos in these categories something should happen or the content should be special for this year in this region (e.g. tornado; snow in Summer; overview of a area; building, that just collapsed), hence the subcategories events and works.
Therefore photos of buildings, that were built years ago and (hopefully) will exist for years to come have in my opinion nothing in common with these categories. After comparing categories in Bavaria and Munich from other years, you are nearly the only one, who uses these categories as photos taken in Bavaria/Munich in year. Particularly, if all Munich photographers would put their photos there, unique photos from events would be "lost".
If I'm wrong, then revert my edits and leave a short notice; then I leave this kind of category alone, because they make no sense to me.
PS: Maybe the categories Month year in Germany are the right categories, which you also already use (File:Allianz Arena, Múnich, Alemania25.JPG)?

Poco a poco (talk) 14:43, 2 February 2013 (UTC)
Poco a poco (talk) 15:03, 2 February 2013 (UTC)

Picture of the Year 2013 R1 Announcement[edit]

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open![edit]

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on . Click here to learn more and vote »

Thanks,
