Redirection of pictures from French Wikipedia to Commons?[edit]

Hi Wayne,

I want to update the Dutch page Hoge Venen using the content of the corresponding French page Hautes Fagnes and... I am facing a problem.

Some of the pictures on the page Hautes Fagnes, e.g., Gentiane des marais and Croix Hautes Fagnes, are in the public domain of the French Wikipedia, but are not uploaded on Commons.

Is it possible to redirect them to Commons so that I can use them in the Dutch page?

Best regards, --Réginald (To reply) 15:04, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

Tien! it was hard I had to get all the French information and change the Source and the License and stuff then download the photo then upload to Commons and put it in the Category:Hautes Fagnes You should be able to use it now I think. WayneRay (talk) 17:50, 1 December 2008 (UTC)WayneRay

Hi guys, sorry to barge in. You might want to take a look at commonshelper (backup link if that one fails). This tool makes it easy to transfer images from a wikipedia to Commons. Make sure you include all information, otherwise your transfers might get deleted and we'll end up with no picture at all :( Multichill (talk) 21:02, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
Wow thanks for that link WayneRay (talk) 23:01, 1 December 2008 (UTC)WayneRay
Thanks a lot, Wayne, for doing it. If I met te same in the future I'll try to you the tool advised by Multichill. Best regards, --Réginald (To reply) 07:18, 2 December 2008 (UTC)
NB: To avoid such problems I'm always uploading my pictures on Commons, never on a wikipedia.
So, I have added some pictures of typical plants in the page Hautes Fagnes and copied them in the page Hoge Venen including the two pictures you have redirected from the French wikipedia to Category:Hautes Fagnes. Thanks again for having done it, --Réginald (To reply) 13:30, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

Squills[edit]

Hi Wayne,

I have reclassified the pictures of the squills: genera Scilla, Ledebouria, Merwilla, Hyacinthoides and Drimia, and asked for the deletion of some obsolete subcategories, as e.g. Urginea maritima (currently Drimia maritima) and Scilla natalensis (currently Merwilla plumbea).

File:Zephyranthes atamasco.jpg: crushing duplicate[edit]

Hi Wayne,

First of all, my best wishes for a fruitful 2009!

I have a problem I cannot solve: Current File:Zephyranthes atamasco.jpg uploaded by SSRustySnail, which is a duplicate of File:Zephyranthes atamasco 4, Marianna, 20020315.jpg, is crushing the picture I had uploaded on 20 February 2007.

Would it be possible to revert it to the version I had originally uploaded on 20 February 2007?

Many thanks and best regards, --Réginald (To reply) 07:30, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

One of these has no copyright information and will be deleted in 7 days anyway, the other I created a Duplicate image request and it should be deleted as well soon. Where is your photo or maybe ask for speedy delete wrong name and give it a new name and reupload it WayneRay (talk) 11:17, 9 January 2009 (UTC)WayneRay
I think I have this sorted out. I warned SSRustySnail (talk · contribs) not to upload images over existing files.[1] I'm assuming good faith and confusion. Thank you for trying to fix this problem, WayneRay. Walter Siegmund (talk) 12:12, 9 January 2009 (UTC)
File:Zephyranthes atamasco 4, Marianna, 20020315.jpg appears to be a copyvio; so much for good faith.[2] Meneerke bloem, thanks for bringing this to our attention. Walter Siegmund (talk) 12:37, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

Retirement[edit]

Hi Wayne,

At the end of this month I will retire. I will take advantage of this somewhat earlier retirement to devote myself more intensely to botany and to Wikepedia.

As soon as I have a new e-mail address I will you know it.

Best regards, --Réginald (To reply) 08:09, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

Congratulations and best wishes on your retirement. I was planning on doing the same thing from Canada Post but decided to wait until I am 60 (in 1.5 years) You are welcome here should you ever decide to visit Canada. I await your new e-mail and we will keep in touch. WayneRay (talk) 14:39, 15 January 2009 (UTC)WayneRay
Hi Wayne! Thanks for your kindness. In some months I'll be 64.
In the meantime I have continued to put some more order in the categories, among others Category:Scilla, Category:Erythronium and Category:Cyclamen (my favourite wild flowers).
Best regards, --Réginald (To reply) 13:06, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

Hotcat?[edit]

Hi WayneRay, i noticed you have hotcat enabled, but not using it a lot. Hotcat automagicly removes uncategorized when you add a category. You can do edits like this one in one click. Multichill (talk) 12:44, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

Sorry you have lost me on this one?? I am going through Images needing Categories and doing 10-40 images one at a time, how will this help me do it?? WayneRay (talk) 16:01, 28 January 2009 (UTC)WayneRay
Take for example File:2003-03-30 Ren mit nur einem Geweih-Strang.jpg. I pressed the "+" and started typing "Rangifer..." it was auto completed to "Rangifer tarandus". I press OK. The category is added and uncategorized is removed. Multichill (talk) 20:04, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi, Wayne.

FYI: I have posted some pictures I have taken in October 2007 in the Canary Island La Palma.

New uploads and reclassification[edit]

Hi Wayne,

FYI:

The last days I have uploaded some pictures of botanical bulbs which are currently flowering in my garden, among others the nice Crocus etruscus from Italy, for which there was till now no picture on Commons.

I have also deeply rewritten and completed the page fr:Fritillaire and updated/reclassified the Category:Fritillaria.

Best regards from Belgium, --Réginald (To reply) 15:03, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

Košetice[edit]

I suppose, that this categorization of Czech house as Poland church was a mistake. --ŠJů (talk) 14:30, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

Yes of course, an honest mistake, I was cleaning up the Category:Images without categories and was trying my best so do what you can to fix a few mistakes I made, Thanks WayneRay (talk) 15:45, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

Spring time[edit]

Hi Wayne,

After a winter, which was cold, very dark and abnormally long (for Belgium), the spring started some 10 days ago, so that we have in a quite short period of time a lot of flowering bulbs. Consequently, as you have seen, I have taken several pictures and put the most representative ones on Commons.

License[edit]

What does this mean? What's your relation to User:Shopengal1395, that you can add license templates to the image and add the image to the user page? --Slomox (talk) 01:22, 2 April 2009 (UTC)

And the same with User:ShimmerSarah? --Slomox (talk) 01:27, 2 April 2009 (UTC)

[3] Okay, that's not how it works: You cannot add licenses to images uploaded by other users. And you cannot create user pages of other users. That's against our policies. Please don't do that. --Slomox (talk) 01:33, 2 April 2009 (UTC)

I think I thought at the time that they didn't know or forgot to put the pd-self on the summary page and since it was a self photo of themselves I was just helping out. As for the User page, it was already created and at the time I didn't know about Category:Images of users so I just put their own image on their own page, . . .sorry WayneRay (talk) 14:08, 2 April 2009 (UTC)

Missing permission?[edit]

Hi Wayne,

When looking at list of my own uploads I have found by chance that File:Cyclamen_repandum_siver.jpg has been put on 01-Apr-2009 as no source since|month=April|day=1|year=2009.

I have removed it and put that Francine Riez had allowed me in September 2007 to upload it, as confirmed by you (or was it by Valérie Chansigaud?). Unfortunately I have changed from computer in the meantime, so that I have no more copy of the e-mail exchange.

Consequently I have asked Francine to confirm it again. Herewith an English translation of the e-mail I have sent one hour ago (I have put you in copy of):

Hi Francine.
As requested by Wikipedia, could you please confirm again by e-mail that you had allowed me to upload picture Cyclamen_repandum_siver.jpg, as well as the following ones?
Thanks and with my best regards, Réginald Hulhoven

Best regards, --Réginald (To reply) 12:23, 18 April 2009 (UTC)

Yes that sounds right, I had a similar permission problem recently as well. The other person has to send in the permission not me (or you) so you have it done properly, cheers WayneRay (talk) 14:45, 18 April 2009 (UTC)
Dear Wayne,
I have e-mailed you the permission granted by Francine Riez. Herewith a copy of this message:
Hi Wayne.
Herewith the written confirmation of Francine Riez that I could use this picture for uploading it to Commons.
PS: I guess she has not to do the same for all her other photos I have uploaded (e.g., pictures of other cyclamens, Trillium, etc).
Best regards,
Réginald.

Category:Allium[edit]

Hi Wayne,

I have tried today to put some order in the Category Allium. I have created sub-categories for the species for which there was an accurate identification or I could accurately identify. The taxonomies are not on the same wave-lenght, particularly for Allium lusitanicum. The GRIN taxonomy considers it still as Allium sensecens subsp. montanum, Tela-Botanica as the "true species" Allium lusitanicum. I have followed the latter.

There is still some "garbage" on this page that should be cleaned, i.e., unidentified or insufficiently identified pictures, and some garlic bulbs, etc. How would we classify them?

Best regards, --Réginald (To reply) 13:25, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

The Latine name of garlic is Allium sativum, for whitch there is already a category. I have had a look in it: there are already several picture of garlic bulbs in it. I consequently will put the remaining "garlic" picture in that category. Thanks again for your appreciated help, --Réginald (To reply) 09:34, 2 June 2009 (UTC)
PS: I have also redirected Category:Garlic to Category:Allium sativum.

Carnations (Category:Dianthus)[edit]

Hi Wayne,

I have two botanical carnations in my garden (Dianthus graniticus and Dianthus gallicus) for which no category was created. I have created them and put the category Dianthus in order according to the GRIN taxonomy.

I have put the pictures of garden hybrids, cultivars and unidentified carnations in the category Unidentified Dianthus.

Best regards from Belgium, --Réginald (To reply) 20:42, 25 June 2009 (UTC)

Hello Wayne. Perhaps you mean this one, it's at an older age and not really identical but anyway, I just thought we could keep that. You can put it up for speedy again, I don't mind, it's not that important neither a terminally essential picture. Cheers! - Badseed talk 22:19, 25 June 2009 (UTC)

Hi Wayne,

I have a problem. I have uploaded File:Brodiaea californica buds.jpg. After uploading no picture was displayed on my screen. I have uploaded it again and again no picture was displayed on my screen.

Thanks, --Réginald (To reply) 09:16, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

Back from the French Alps[edit]

Hi Wayne,

Back from a week in the Dauphiné, French Alps. I have taken about 300 pics of the flowers growing there and in the Jardin Alpin at the Col du Lautaret.

I will select the best ones and those of plants for which there is currently no (good) picture on Commons, and upload them in the forthcoming days.

Best regards, --Réginald (To reply) 18:48, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

I have uploaded 80 of these pictures. For some species, as Alchemilla pentaphyllea, Laserpitium gallicum, Verbascum chaixii and Veronica bellidioides, there were no picture yet on Commons. I have also created / updated some categories. --Réginald (To reply) 09:01, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

Flora de Filipinas[edit]

The last time that I looked, you were responsible for most of the galleries for the Blanco images.

I am curious if you have a suggestion for what I should do with these:

As they are already perhaps located "where the sun doesn't shine", telling me to put them there would be redundant.

Moving the gallery/galleries that you made is the kind of rudeness I have no problem with dying a slow and painful death and I will not participate in this kind of rudeness. Your galleries, while incomplete, also show of a great deal of effort and show more information than mine do.

My galleries are low maintenance, succeeded to only put the original text back into the order in which it was originally published and requires that if the view of the gallery is interested in a species that they click a few times. I was attempting to make articles for each of the images at english wikipedia using my SUL enabled pseudonym but a couple of eh, "mental giants in their field" saw through the careful and thorough disguise.... (yes, some sarcasm was attempted to be expressed here).

I haven't looked at your gallery/galleries in a while, but it was not the complete collection and required some maintenance that I was not interested in building into mine.

My opinion is that it would be nice for my galleries to fill the namespace that yours occupies. I am interested (honestly now) in your opinion about what should be done with the namespace. -- carol (talk) 21:14, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi Carol, I can't find any Galleries only a main Category Flora de Filipinas? Since you have been doing a massive cleanup and if there are the same number of files (1400+) I see no reason not to replace mine wherever they are. Or place them in the Category. I haven't worked on illustrations since our or I should say my disagreement with the image in a category idea that took over the galleries etc. Give me a link to the ones I worked on I can't find them. Nice talking to you again WayneRay (talk) 21:44, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

[ Deleted this conversation as it relates to the reason I don't like talking to you and listening to your put downs and sarcasm and I refuse to tell you where to go ]

Much of what I am about to complain about here has (perhaps) very little to do with you: your activities, your opinions, etc. It has more to do with my observations.

Gallery vs Category. Among the many reasons I preferred to work on the categories here is this one big reason: that those that were active here were active maintaining galleries and not so interested in the category tree. In my mind, it should have been easy for those who were active and wanting galleries to concentrate on those -- making them, maintaining them and easy to leave the category tree to those who were more interested in this. Since that time, there was a change in the way that the wiki here works and subcategories as well as galleries list at the end of categories with a large population like Category:Flora de Filipinas. My intentions were to make commons into a great image server. That change in the way the categories show subcategories and galleries does not figure into my intentions. I have decades of experience working with real live people who are not hiding (or role playing or whatever other real life and psychologically debilitating abilities this anonymous internet delivers to those who use it) and my expectations were relatively natural and easy for real people to go along with; work with.
Similar: I noticed when I first started to be active here a potential race situation. Where the "links to" for images was being abused. I noticed this in the stubs for the plant articles at English wikipedia and in the voting for the featured images here. That kind of thing -- the "What links here" is (I think) kind of difficult for the computers that serve these pages. Whether or not it was happening or not (the signs and the environment and the activities seemed to suggest it was happening) -- when I mentioned this where ever I mentioned it, the practiced started to cease. Signatures with embedded thumbnails ceased and the stub templates were portioned out to include many different photographs. Shortly after that, the category containing images which needed to be categorized stopped being stored here alphabetically. I had categorized many many images and gotten a screenshot of the emptied categories by alphabet letter and used the screenshots to spell words. Certainly gamelike, but not a problem for the servers or in any way against the stated goals of this wiki. Simply categorizing images is dreadfully boring for any person possessed with a working brain. My little game was an improvement here and accomplished much without hurting anything and actually causing a cleanup. It is much like my real life experiences with people, by the way. That there is more fun making things work and look good than there is fun making things break and not working towards the goal.
Bot spam on image pages: I don't like it. Part of my reasons for being involved here is that I read a few articles at English wikipedia, was interested in the images in the article, clicked through and found a wasteland here. I am also really not liking/enjoying condescending bot operators either. Mentally disabled people (perhaps by this anonymous problem here) who role play without experience with the people whose roles they play. My actual real world experiences are that this is not enjoyed by many more than just me.

I was never interested in interfering with the gallery makers. I think it is a sorry and sad individual or group of individuals who have a "need" to takeover a successful effort. I am only interested in "gaming" in as much as it can clean up a mess or make the environment nicer or move a community effort towards a goal. If I could be "Mary Poppins" and make the images here clean themselves up and entertain the children I would. That was movie magic though and all I could do was demonstrate a slightly more interesting than mostly not interesting game of solitare after others played a version of 1 million card pickup -- which is rude, wrong and not very goal oriented.

About those galleries[edit]

Is it possible that we work together to name these galleries so they can all exist together? A lot of work went into making yours -- more than the effort put into making mine. Mine are complete for what little information they provide and my effort was mostly put into the renovation which was mostly a pleasure as the original images were so beautiful.

It is very easy to duplicate and adapt my galleries to display the original images -- something I would like to do because while it is not the "winning way to be" here it is honest of me to admit that others might be able to renovate these images more accurately. Also it is easy to duplicate and adapt my galleries to show the cropped image -- useful for articles and many other applications.

My galleries are a collection of images from a book and your gallery is the beginning of a botanical collection of images from that old book. They are different -- I don't think that my galleries should replace yours (as I probably was thinking when I first wrote here). I think instead that a naming scheme would allow them to all exist and be here -- useful for what should be the goal of this image serving wiki. -- carol (talk) 18:15, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

The names are fine, just place them in the main Category or create a subcategory for cleaned up images. I didn't keep a link to all my galleries and Categories and had to look through the links to find the one's I did as it wasn't clear from the name you gave me and was in the actual artist's name. That's why it took a few extra minutes after I had written my first response which I removed as I don't require further dumbing down and sarcastic criticism. Just name them appropriately and add them in to the main Category WayneRay (talk) 01:38, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

Hello, WayneRay!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Hi WayneRay, something went wrong with the files shown in Commons_talk:Stroke_Order_Project#Wrong_category.

In Sept 2008, BotMultichill flagged them erroneously for missing cat; and in Dec 2008, you replaced that flag line by a wrong cat. If both edits are undone, or the line removed that only the SOlicense invocation remains, everything will be o.k. Will you mind to do that? --Sarang (talk) 10:15, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

I hereby give my permission for Réginald Hulhoven (alias Meneerke bloem on Wikipedia) to upload the attached image on my behalf.

Category:Cantante[edit]

Hi WayneRay,
did you create this cat as spanish language equivalent to Category:Female vocalists, as it is used currently (somewhat in contradiction to our language policy), or did you have something else in mind? If the former is true, would you mind if it is moved to Category:Female vocalists? --Túrelio (talk) 14:18, 17 February 2010 (UTC)

File:Drake Samford Claxton Ray 1956b.jpg[edit]

We wanted to let you know that we've used one of your pictures in a project of ours: http://litpics.tumblr.com/post/9570348993/lit-a-rivermouth-romance-by-thomas-bailey-aldrich

We created a computer program to generate random pairings of sentences from public domain texts and public domain / creative commons images. Some of the pictures we've selected come from the Wikipedia Commons. All the pictures we select ourselves, but the pairings and the text are random. Of these pairings that are generated, we only post the most interesting combinations.

We welcome any feedback about our site.

Thanks for sharing your pictures,
Samantha and Patrick

FYI Postcard HMS Duke of York.jpg has wrong date.[edit]

Wayne, I appreciate the photos that you have made available. The subject of this picture is a WW2 battleship of the King George V class. The photo could not have been taken in 1917 as the first of the class completed in Dec 1940 (Duke of York in Nov 1941) and all that survived the war were scrapped in 1958. A photo of that Duke of York could have been taken as long ago as 70 years or as recently as 54 years. This is just for your information. Constant314 (talk) 17:44, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
