Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. Thank you. Siebrand 16:16, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

Image:Mount St. Helens 05-18-1980.jpg[edit]

I started poking around your uploads -- I didn't get very far because I clicked on the Mount St. Helens upload.

I have a couple of questions, like how come you uploaded a smaller version and did you do anything to it other than scaling and cropping? -- carol 10:04, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

The original 2048 x 3072 pixel image at http://vulcan.wr.usgs.gov/Imgs/Jpg/MSH/Images/MSH80_eruption_mount_st_helens_05-18-80.jpg is 3.5 MB, which seemed excessive to me given that the resolution isn't very high. So nothing was sacrificed by cutting the dimensions in half. Also, the borders of the original image aren't horizontal and vertical, and thus aren't very attractive; evidently the camera was tilted. This problem was readily fixed by cropping down to 984 × 1,460 pixels. All done with Photoshop. That's all I did. WolfmanSF 10:22, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
no layer overlay, some color pull out
unedited original
While I was working on the image I was considering the different films and what the astronomers knew about their qualities back then. I have a strong feeling that the observatory that took that photograph was using the brand that tended to develop more blue (the competitor developed more red so, if I remember correctly, you had to decide which color you wanted to stand out when deciding which film to buy). It actually would be kind of interesting to see the astro photos that the observatory had been taking right before the dust and ash stole the night sky from them. I suspect blue which is the reason I had no problem removing some of it from the image.
I am not confident about my abilities; my confidence about my knowledge is that I know what I know -- that is the reason that I like to put the original online here as well as whatever I did to repair those things that time and scanning from paper into pixels has done to these things. I had more confidence in my changes when I saw other photographs that were not so blue. I also fixed an image that was a car that had been half buried by ash -- after I fixed it, the colors seemed to be truer to me but I could make out less detail about the inside of the car than in the original.
My first uploaded version -- I got to looking at it and the white part in the center of the ash plume lost so much detail. I made that by using the green layer from a decomposition, blurring that, lightening the value gamma and changing the mode to overlay. It made the dark parts at the top very very beautiful and much more 3 dimensional and it also seemed to get rid of the noise, but the blown out white parts were not worth it. The way wiki works, that version is still here, you just have to click on the date to see it in the upload history (the first time I wanted to see what changes had been made to an image, I reverted and then undid -- that was unnecessary).
I think that having both the original and the 'attempted repaired' version available, people who know what they are doing can start over and do it right if they want the image and others might just think that the repair that is here is better than they can do so, it is nice to have them both around.
Thanks for putting that gallery online with your image also. For one of the anniversaries the radio played a phone call that one of the missing people from that eruption had made. It was chilling to hear -- they knew enough about this kind of geological event to know that there was no way to escape the plume in the time that they had from the location that they were at. So, for me, one scan of an old photograph and the memory of one of the more sad and memorable radio productions I have had the pleasure to hear -- I enjoyed the time and it felt right to make the image less noisy and the plumes seem more 3D. -- carol 11:13, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
I'm sure you're right about the excessive blue, but I would have no idea how best to deal with that. Actually, I don't remember ever hearing a tape of the phone call you speak of. I did see a video made by a TV newsman who got caught by the eruption, abandoned his car and tried to escape on foot. The video mainly shows darkness, but he gives some running commentary about how miserable and scared he is. He was near the edge of the heavily affected area and fortunately survived.
That must have been an impressive video camera that continues to function in a dust and ash filled atmosphere like that. I was a radio snob. Then the circumstances that forced me to leave Michigan and come to California lacked some logic and I have since become a Michigan radio snob due to the incredibly wrong situation.
The main reason I uploaded the image is that a smaller but very similar image had been uploaded and mislabeled as being of El Chichon, a Mexican volcano that erupted in 1982 (while I was in the vicinity). The error arose on the NOAA website, got transmitted to a NASA website, and then to other websites around the world. I've managed to have the Wikimedia image and some of the others deleted by now, but if you google for "El Chichon" images you'll still see some of these Mt. St. Helens photos. It's ridiculous because, being a low-elevation tropical mountain, El Chichon could never have snow on its slopes. WolfmanSF 10:13, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
Information is really something, isn't it? Some is accurate. Some is wrong on accident. Some is wrong on purpose. Some is wrong because the way to measure it is not mature enough when it is first measured. Some is wrong because the definition matures (like when they broke vitamin K into the many B vitamins). And some is probably wrong due to misunderstanding.
Finding images here is interesting. I think there are three kinds of people who upload images here. Gallery making people (they upload the images and make web pages that contain several images), people who use the category pages that come with the software and people who just upload images. The galleries seem to be the singular form of the word they represent, like Volcano and the galleries are the plural form Volcanoes and the search engine here seemed to be partial to gallery until I noticed that I was partial to searching for the singular form of the word. The engine is pretty good for finding images that contain the word or phrase searched in either the name or the description. I have just spent the last week or so trying to figure out what to do with images that were poorly named and without good description; and that is how I know the behavior of that beast.
I am glad that you put that other image in the Feature Pictures candidates. I am not going to vote there, as difficult as it seems sometimes. It is in some ways like a real election at times, with campaigning and they might even have little puddles of organizations that work like political parties do. Occasionally it really does seem like they are looking for good images as well. The volcano story was good also. Thanks. -- carol 14:58, 1 December 2007 (UTC)

Tip: Categorizing images[edit]

Hello, WolfmanSF!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.
