[edit] Great white shark range map

[edit] Your range maps

Hi,

I had a look at some of the range maps you've been creating and they would be much better made as a Scalable Vector Graphic, rather than in raster png format. SVG graphics are very easy to make using free software. A good product is Inkscape and there are many tutorials online including some on WikiCommons/Wikipedia. If you are using Photoshop, or especially Illustrator, you shouldn't find the transition hard. There are many svg blank maps available in commons. All you have to do is add a layer with the animals' range on.

Using SVG you would get a smooth line instead of the jagged grey edges as seen on File:Wiki-Carcharodon carcharias.png, which resulted from increasing the image's size. In other words, it could be scaled up indefinitely and never get blurry. Further, anyone who edits your map would only have to edit a single layer, which is much faster than editing an entire map. I like the work you are doing, just want to point you towards some better practices. If you have any questions or want advice regarding svgs please ask and I will try to answer them.

Also, I was wondering if there is a reason why the range maps you create are all in different colors? While they're beautiful, I know that there has been some effort on the part of Wikipedia:WikiProject Animals to create consistency in range maps, meaning using the same color to represent ranges for all animals. This is preferable since it would give us consistency throughout the entire encyclopedia—which seems more professional—and would also prevent any sort of confusion by users.

One last thing, please cite the source of your data in the summary when making range maps. Verifiability is one of Wikipedia's policies after all. This is especially important when making maps for featured articles, such as for Lion, where you replaced the old sourced map with your version.

Hi. The range map you have made for the polar bear article is incorrect. Polar bears are not native to Iceland, but they have been spotted on the island from time to time. On the other hand, polar bears are native to Svalbard archipelago. But on your range map, svalbard have been left out.

Thanks! The changes I made are as indicated in the upload - correcting a typo in silvestris, and using clearer, more visibly distinct colours. I also cut out superfluous parts of the map (Americas, Pacific Ocean) to make the map clearer in thumbnail view. Hope this helps! - MPF (talk) 17:45, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
