File:Flag_of_Kosovo.svg

I just updated my Flag of Kosovo. Several open questions remain to you: the 6 stars are not lying on an arc like demanded. I suppose, the angle spacing of the stars should be always equal to 10°. And they should be mirror-symmetric to a vertical line through the flag's center, shouldn't it? To get a precise outline of the Kosovo-border is simple -- look at File:Kosovo_outline.svg. But how precise do we need this border for the flag? If we assume absolute flag size 2000 pixel, we need not border-variations < 0.5 pixel. Currently there are errors of up to 2 pixel for a flag of 840 width.

BTW: I think this will be the last flag upload until I get further infos from you for other flags. I'm still waiting for an answer to the blue-color of the Coat of Arms of Slovakia (or should I not update these Slovakia signs). :) Achim1999 (talk) 19:02, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

I would say for Slovakia, keep the blue the way it is right now. As for Kosovo, I am not certain about how big the map is supposed to be, the star or anything else. There isn't a lot I have about the Kosovo flag other than an official ratio. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 19:07, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

Picture help

Hi Z. We talked a bit in December about a pic I uploaded that got deleted. I put up another one, and think I got all of the stuff right. One place I had a problem was in emailing the release to: permissions@commonswikimedia.org

That is the email address from the template, but it bounced back to me. Here is the release:

I hereby affirm that I, John Styn, is the creator and/or sole owner of the exclusive copyright of a self portrait of John Styn with crossed arms, pink hair and pink with red fur vest (http://www.flickr.com/photos/halcyon/7315956552/) I agree to publish that work under the free license "Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0" (unported) and GNU Free Documentation License (unversioned, with no invariant sections, front-cover texts, or back-cover texts). I acknowledge that by doing so I grant anyone the right to use the work in a commercial product or otherwise, and to modify it according to their needs, provided that they abide by the terms of the license and any other applicable laws. I am aware that this agreement is not limited to Wikipedia or related sites. I am aware that I always retain copyright of my work, and retain the right to be attributed in accordance with the license chosen. Modifications others make to the work will not be claimed to have been made by me. I am aware that the free license only concerns copyright, and I reserve the option to take action against anyone who uses this work in a libelous way, or in violation of personality rights, trademark restrictions, etc. I acknowledge that I cannot withdraw this agreement, and that the work may or may not be kept permanently on a Wikimedia project. Here is the file: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:John_Styn.jpg

Could you help me make this work?

You had the wrong address; the correct address is at permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 03:44, 10 July 2012 (UTC)
Just sent it off. Thanks for the correct email. Is that all I need to do?

Problems with a new user

Hello. How are you? Some time ago, one Spanish user uploaded a map named Bulgaro-Macedonian language (see history for details), which was wrong (there is no such language). I separated those two languages and asked to rename the file. I informed the user and it seems that he is fine with that (he joined these two languages, I think, because of their relationship or lack of knowledge). However, one or two days ago, new user registered and immediately reverted me and accused me of nationalism (even though nowhere Bulgar0-Macedonian language exists, except in Bulgarian nationalistic circles - those two languages are counted as separate for a long period ). I reverted him because it is against the science and he reverted me again. Since he is new user he should not be so familiar with Commons, so I suspect it is a sock puppet.

Thanks for the assistance, I do not want to be involved in nationalist edit war with such users.--Никола Стоіаноски 21:37, 12 July 2012 (UTC)

I got the map saved and going to keep an eye on it. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 04:36, 13 July 2012 (UTC)

File:Russian Anthem instrumental.ogg

Commons-emblem-issue.svg File:Russian Anthem instrumental.ogg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue.
Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hi. User:Bermanya got the permission of the Turkish Armed Forces ({{PermissionOTRS|id=2012071110005537}}). I asked User:Taysin about File:TSK-emblem.svg. The permission covers the emblem. Thank you. ^Takabeg (talk)

Finding EPS

You may have noticed that I've been uploading alot of road signs lately. I actually just finished uploading all the ones for New Zealand provided by their transport agency which has a full list of EPS files. I was wondering if there's any tool that could help me find other countries which make their signs available for download in EPS. So far, using a basic google search, all I've found is a crummy selection from the United States. Do you think you could help me find some others (if they're out there)? Fry1989 eh? 19:27, 17 July 2012 (UTC)

I remember finding a bunch of Aussie files in PDF that will work; so if EPS does not work, always shoot for PDF. I use Corel so you can also find CDR and I can make them into SVGs for you. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 05:00, 18 July 2012 (UTC)
Well, I can download EPS and convert them, but converting PDFs to SVG is something I can't seem to figure out. I was just hoping there was something similar to TinEye that gives more targeted searches. I can make files, but they'll never be as good as official files, so when I came across the NZ ones, it was like striking a gold mine. Fry1989 eh? 05:33, 18 July 2012 (UTC)
And looks like I just struck another one for the UK, though I'm kinda hoping there's more out there. Fry1989 eh? 05:47, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.
Thanks for uploading File:Flag of Somalia.svg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the OTRS system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. Thank you.

East German symbols

Can you help on this? There are sources each way so there's hardly any consensus. However, I have been trying to change the wheat to a dark brown border like in the gazetted version, but because of the way the ribbons are created on the SVG file, it's complicated. your COM:UR decision

Hi Zscout370,

about your decision here: Where are the copyright issues? There are two persons who are recording readings of a pd-book. They upload these recordings to the commons, but are also offering these recordings on their websites, but they state clearly on their websites that they are licence their work under cc-by-sa 3.0 (e.g. [1] or [2] for [3]). So where are the big issues that made you close the UR? I don't understand. --Isderion (talk) 01:49, 25 July 2012 (UTC)

Derivative works of copyrighted content; while the readings might be CC, the original/underlying work is not under a free license. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 01:51, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
You are wrong. I wrote above that they are pd and I meant it. The original work is from Franz Kafka, who died 1924. That makes it more than 70 pma. --Isderion (talk) 01:57, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
I see. Well, as pointed out in the UR request, while I found the website at http://www.hans-joerggrosse.de/ which has a CC-BY-SA 1.0 license, there are underlying issues with the recordings itself (such as the music might not be free while the voice over and original work is under a free license). It doesn't make a lot of sense, and looking at the discussions, there is a lot more that needs to be figured out. Until then, I don't feel comfortable having these files restored at this time (especially if it is just a blanket request like that instead of specific files). User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 02:09, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
There are only a few files that have music in it. So the other files can be restored. If not, please name the specific reasons why. You are very vague in your argumentation ("there is a lot more that needs to be figured out" what more?), which makes discussing difficult. --Isderion (talk) 02:42, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
If you can point to me the files that have no music, then I would look at them and possibly restore. But, there are discussions elsewhere on this site (as you saw the links at during the UDEL request) and going to let that finish first before we even consider restoring. /* Files uploaded by Archivist1174 */

I see that you are an OTRS volunteer, and I'm aware of the backlog, but if you can expedite our request I'd appreciate it. For your own edification Steve is sitting next to me as I write this ans Bob is on the phone, if you happen to be online. This has never been a problem in the past, several other members have galleries here of photos they released the rights too, and both Steve ans Bob want their photos restored quickly and expeditiously, with the correct license information. This is where we refer the press for stock photos. Thanks. Archivist1174 (talk) 14:53, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

I got the email and I will look at it. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 16:12, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. We just responded. Archivist1174 (talk) 16:39, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
I see that you restored all of the files deleted by Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Archivist1174. I recognize that we are dealing with two NY State Assemblymen here, so Assume Good Faith should apply even more strongly than usual, but the questions raised in the DR are serious.
One of these images was taken forty years ago and while it may be PD-USArmy, that is not claimed. File:Trooper Robert Castelli.jpg is also forty years old and looks like a professional portrait.
The OTRS e-mail explains that although Bruce McDonough's name appears in the EXIF of File:Gov Paterson signs Chapter 294 of the Laws of 2010 on 7.30.10 as Assemblyman Castelli looks on in Red Room in Albany.JPG, it was in fact taken by another photographer -- not Archivist1174.
Among the images in the DR that have EXIF information, we have Canon, Sony, and two different Nikon DSLR cameras, which is an odd collection of cameras for one person. We also have a variety of recent images with no EXIF, which raises the question of why the person who says he took the images does not include the EXIF. Of course there are explanations for that -- my own images do not have EXIF because I use an old version of PhotoPaint for my editing.
Therefore, it seems to me very unlikely that these are all the work of Archivist1174 as claimed. It is certainly possible, but perhaps unlikely, that Archivist1174 owns the copyright or has the right to license all of them, but if so, the "own work" claims are simply wrong.
Unless you understand why this makes better sense than I have described, I think we should reopen the DR. In any event, Archivist1174 should clean up the apparently incorrect "own work" on several of the images and we should get better explanations of the provenance of the two old images. Thanks, .     Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 20:03, 2 August 2012 (UTC)
I have been busy with a lot of things in my personal life, so I have not gone around and cleaned up all of the image tags and descriptions due to it. As for the Bruce McDonough photo, he is a staff member of Castelli (of which Castelli stated in the email) so that image is a work for hire. The NYGOP is also a work for hire image, as stated in the email. If you could email me or contact me off Wiki, I can explain this more details. But in short, the copyright releases are good (and I have documentation to prove it) but due to the upload wizard and maybe the actions of Archivist1174, a lot of things have to be fixed (and I just didn't have the time to do it). User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 20:09, 2 August 2012 (UTC)
No rush -- it's summer time and none of us have as much time here as we do in the midst of winter. I'll touch base in a week or so. .     Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 23:25, 2 August 2012 (UTC)
All of the photos from/of Castelli can be credited as "Office of Assemblyman Castelli"; Katz can be credited as "Office of Assemblyman Katz." For the Army photo, I am not sure who took it, but for the New York Trooper photo, I think it might be a work of the state (since troopers have this kind of photo taken for department photos, IDs and, sometimes, used as photos for funeral ceremonies if a trooper has fallen in the line of duty. I oppose changing the Russian coat of arms, I worked very hard on setting it the way it is now based on a lot of observation. The other versions are inferior I feel. Zscout370, what do you mean by "come up with the designs"? Do you mean for my french signs or the Russian presidential flag? Unfortunately my french signs were not rotated, one was reverted to a previous version by another user who ignored the rotatebot template and thought I was just screwing around, and the other to I reverted to a previous version until they can be properly done. Your closure of a file-undeletion request

This is regarding your closure of the "File:Reverse-cowgirl-animation.gif" request in Commons:Undeletion requests. (Why have you been in such a hurry to close discussion under that request?) It was asked in that discussion: "Which specific official policy requires getting in touch with COM:OTRS?" No one has answered that, so it appears that getting in touch with COM:OTRS isn't required by policy, and it appears that the file-deletion is due to improper motives on the part of administrators. I hope I'm wrong about that, but that is how it looks.

Also in that discussion, you wrote: "There are a lot of issues [with the deleted images]". Can you specify what those issues are? (Most of the issues discussed have been irrelevant to the question of copyright-violation.)

--150.135.161.105 18:28, 1 September 2012 (UTC)

The sourcing is an anonymous tumblr page, myself and no other administrators have no reason to trust the page. Plus it is a sexual image that was shot in a private setting and we need consent from both actors, not just the filmer. This is why I want OTRS; so we can make sure we got all of the proper documentation and not just an one-off uploader using false information. The undeletion requests can be closed for any reason (and since it was closed and restarted, we can close it again). As for policy, if an image is going to have doubt or anything questionable, especially those deleted before, I ask for OTRS as a condition for undeletion. It is not written in policy, but it is accepted by the community as proper procedure. With OTRS, there is no doubt and we can use it as a reference point. As for the deletion itself, I have no comment on the matter since I haven't looked at the deletion request or any of the actions after (including the blocking); I generally handle only undeletion requests. I AM A NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKER.

Zscout370 Hello You are exaggerating my spelling mistakes. Nothing got lost in translation that is rude. Look again I speak English I replied with out my glasses and too fast sorry for that come one, anyone can make mistakes and it is not that bad don't exaggerate. I don't think someone who is not a native English speaker will ever write as well as I do even with the mistakes. And look this is not about the files it is about this user attitude just ask her/him to stop communicating with me and checking my files. Let someone else handle it. That's all. And also why you let those files for so long without saying anything and all of a sudden they are inappropriate? Anyway if wiki won't grant me permission I'll erase them myself. Thanks for your help. I am relieved there are some others here. And by the way I didn't get any e-mail.--FR9 06:12, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

The Commons is a global project, so the likely hood that some users/issues that we are dealing with would require a translator. Since this is not the case, I am going to move on from that point and focus on the images at hand. Also, keep in mind we have millions of images, we cannot catch everything as soon as they are uploaded. Sometimes a user will upload an image and it would be months or years for me or others to deal with them. I am going to address your image issues at the other page, so give me a moment to respond there. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 06:13, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

Thank you, as I mentioned the images are the least of my concerns, probably the current license tags are wrong after I changed them, and honestly I got really confused with the tagging after yesterday's crazy changing and changing on the mentioned user side. And I am not an expert you see I am not presuming to be. But anyway if you consider it can be fixed and you or someone could tell me which one to use so this can be fixed I'll appreciate it, if not it is ok too. And thanks again. If I can be of any further help to you I'll be glad to collaborate. Take care, bye.--FR9 06:25, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

The license tags are wrong, mostly that we need permission from Trevor Moore for the images File:Trevor Moore on The Trevor Moore Show.png and File:Trevor Moore 2012.png. The signature image is fine. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 06:28, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

The four moves that you're referring to are infavourable namings, that have been performed by someone after I published the relevant name-requests and while the mover saw the specified names they opted to disregard them and the result is four of my uploads that now bear names that are extremely alien to what is desired. Would you then attend the above list and fix it, given that it is within your authority ? Orrlingtalk 21:21, 4 September 2012 (UTC)
While in my authority I can move these files, I am going to exercise restraint. First, you and other users need to settle on a name for these files. I am not going to move if there is going to be a disagreement. Second, with some of the names they have been moved to, I actually like those names better than what you are suggesting, since it is mentioning specifics. Once you have a solution, I will look at it again and decide from there. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 04:56, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

PDFs

I believe you once said you know how to convert PDF images to SVG. Could you maybe show me how, it's be really useful. I of course understand it's not practical for alot of PDFs that have low quality images, but this one for example has really good quality. Fry1989 eh? 22:52, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

Sure: right click on the PDF file and open in Inkscape. Then extract what you need and you will get SVG files. If you are having issues, I can do that for you (and zip you the files in an email). User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 04:56, 11 September 2012 (UTC)
Wow, can't believe how simple it is. Thanks!! Fry1989 eh? 21:49, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

Invalid SVG

The file Flag of France.svg is not valid due to four errors (just follow the link to check). I cannot upload a valid version because it is protected. How about a weaker protection allowing registered users edit & upload? Otherwise, when you would correct it, you may use the code shown at SVG simplified flags, which is 600 × 400. sarang사랑 16:11, 15 September 2012 (UTC)

The errors was that the code was written for SVG 1.0, yet the remaining was listed as 1.1. I went ahead and fixed the issue myself and the validation is now passed. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 04:16, 16 September 2012 (UTC)

Sorry that I must write this, but Sam tried to drag me into this flag/emblem-war

I'm really a bit distracted, that YOU didn't comment exactly what and why you changed (and others) of the flag (and its emblem) but in contrast prefer fighting on File:Flag of Iran.svg as I strongly recommanded to do on it's talk-page to prevent exactly what now is happening. :-( Achim1999 (talk) 20:11, 19 September 2012 (UTC)

Because two users were going at it for design differences based on the specification we both used. Also the arms image was a bit different (mostly at the bottom base) and the specifications confirmed it. So I went with your pattern for the flag and his for the emblem to stop the upload war. Two local copies that need to be deleted

Can you please delete these two local copy files and talk some sense into your fellow sysop? DrKiernan uploaded them locally because he has absolutely no faith in the proper process. The issue is about whether the arms is bordered in black or gold, our current Commons files has it in black. The version with gold was uploaded separately on Commons twice by Drkiernan, and both times deleted. I explained to him in both DRs that the proper process is to go to the files' talk pages and gain a simple consensus for the change, or if there's no objections just go ahead and change them. He seems to think I wield such power here that no matter how big a consensus, the change won't be done unless I agree to it. Now he's uploaded them locally to Wikipedia to bypass our Commons files. I again have tried talking some sense into him on the proper way to get the change to take place if it's correct, and he instead tries to deflect it and call me a liar and hypocrite, and telling me to do his job for him. He's lazy, and behaving like a child. Fry1989 eh? 17:48, 23 September 2012 (UTC)

The local copies were deleted before I had a chance to do anything with them. I will try and see if I can have a chat with him. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 01:11, 25 September 2012 (UTC)

CC-BY-SA license on Flag_of_Lesotho.svg

Unless you are the person who designed the flag of Lesotho, could you relicense that as Cc-zero, to harmonize with the rest of the flags? Alternatively you would need to figure out if it's in the public domain according to the laws of Lesotho, but I couldn't find a reference. Thanks in advance. http://www.wipo.int/wipolex/en/text.jsp?file_id=209919 has it where administrative decisions are not subject to copyright, so we can foresee this new flag as one of those. I have no issues with the relicensing, so you have my permission to do it for me (since I am having a lot of times where I cannot wiki due to work issues). Hi! As the original author of the picture, would you care to look at the comments and sources I added on the talk page? Thank you already in advance. Oraivio (talk) 14:01, 12 December 2012 (UTC)

I looked at the sources and it is detailed and I see what you are saying about the image. When I did this image years ago, I just went by what I had at the time. With this information, I think we can improve our image a lot better. I know we have a picture of the arms, but do you have a picture of what the flag looked like from these sources? User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 14:14, 12 December 2012 (UTC)
I haven't been able to find any online sources showing the flag itself. My only source showing the flag is the book Suomen lippu kautta aikojen ("Flag of Finland Throughout the Ages"). If you'll send me an email, I can reply with a scan of the particular pages. Would this be the way to go? I can't place those scans publicly available: even though the pictures themselves do not carry copyright, the book does. (My own drawing based on this printed source is currently uploaded in the Finnish Wikipedia: [4]. This most probably needs heavy SVG cleanup, but the bulk of the work is already done...) I need help

Can you please use your sysop powers to fix this for me. The file was originally called "Ontario QEW", I moved it to "Pntario M101" because that's the Government's official name for the sign because it's one of a kind. Then my move was undone by another user without any explanation, and then the redirect of Ontario M101 to Ontario QEW was deleted by some admin, and it caused all sorts of problems. Then I moved it back to Ontario M101 because of the fact there was no reasoning for undoing my work, and I was never contacted regarding it, and now this whole mess is happening. The file still exists as File:Ontario M101.svg, but people want it back as "Ontario QEW" and I can't fix it myself because of this problem, the server won't let me move it back. All the redirects need to be deleted and the file moved back to "Ontario QEW". Fry1989 eh? 18:49, 23 December 2012 (UTC)

It honestly was an easy fix. Also, I want to apologize for cluttering up your talk page about that Brazilian state flag. I wish I had an answer to the colors (I agree about your findings of dark colored flags) but everything I found online is light. The government isn't helping either. Author of File:自民党ロゴ.svg

Could you check if the 'author' field of File:自民党ロゴ.svg is alright? I notice that the same file was published as ja:ファイル:自民党ロゴ.svg by ja:User:鉄之介. If it is your own work (implying that you are ja:User:鉄之介) then there is no problem, but if not, I think you will have to credit the original author. --whym (talk) 00:39, 24 December 2012 (UTC)

I used a script to transfer the file, so I claim zero authorship for the file whatsoever. Plus, the source and author should be the 自民党 party itself and not a single user. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 09:22, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
Agreed on crediting 自民党. My concerns were that it was credited to "アップロード者と同じ" - which was, taken literally, you. I hope this change sorts it out. --whym (talk) 11:11, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
Because that was what was used on the ja.wikipedia page when I transferred the file over. But yeah, the change is perfect. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 18:01, 24 December 2012 (UTC)

Can you please help me move these files up to English Wikipedia? Bidgee in his usually unhelpfulness won't do anything and I'm not very good at it. I tried doing this badge but IDK if I did it right cause it's still asking for fair-use information. Fry1989 eh? 23:30, 26 December 2012 (UTC)

The badge is right on en.wikipedia since the work is still copyrighted in the source country (so fair use has to be applied). I will get the others moved shortly. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 06:30, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

too fast deletion of Category:Military rank insignia of the Air Force of Azerbaijan

Hello! I've noticed that you have speedily deleted a lot of images of this category and I am not sure that it was correct - these files were uploaded long ago (October 2010) and you even haven't even tagged them to notify uploaders (for example, me). I don't think that this case is so obvious (for me, these files are PD-AZ-exempt) and it is such an urgent case for deletion - you'd better open a deletion request. What would you like now - undeletion request or you will restore them and discuss before deletion (I personally think that the latter way is better)? rubin16 (talk) 06:41, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

With direct copyright violations, as you have confirmed for me (the files were uploaded in Oct 2010, the ones at http://www.uniforminsignia.org/?option=com_insigniasearch&Itemid=53&result=1075 were from August of 2010), no deletion request was needed and they could be speedy deleted. As for the PD-AZ claim; even if the object itself (insignia) is public domain, each representation of the insignia enjoys copyright. So someone can make their own images and there would be no problems. Also, a lot of the insignia was uploaded by a user who had a lot of copyright issues in the past and now. Honestly, I will not restore the files due to the direct copying from the above website. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 06:52, 28 December 2012 (UTC)
However, a lot of the insignia is online from the Azeri Government. You can take these images and use them for PD-AZ since it is from published and scanned legislation. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 08:23, 28 December 2012 (UTC)
Ok, thanks rubin16 (talk) 09:35, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

File deletion

Hi ! You deleted File:Generic-Navy-O3.svg, and this impacted fr:Laurent de Belgique. The article also uses File:Generic-Navy-O1.svg, File:Generic-Navy-O6.svg and File:Generic-Navy-O7.svg so I was wondering wether there is a reason to treat them differently or if they should be treated the same. Could you check again whether the deleted image is indeed a copy of this website, as the remaining images seem to differ slightly, so maybe a false positive? Asavaa (talk) 00:46, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

I just missed a file when I was restoring today, that was just it. What happened was that I was checking a category of insignia from the Brazilian Navy and I found a lot of the insignia (not the SVG ones you listed) were copyrighted from that website. So I did a batch delete; the SVG files deletions were a mistake and I apologize about that. Once I saw my error, I restored as much as I could and just missed one. It is restored now. OK, thanks. I have restored the image in the article. Checking what CommonsDelinker had done, I notice File:Generic-Navy-O2.svg and File:Generic-Navy-O4.svg who are still deleted. Same story I guess. Could you restore them as well? I guess there is no CommonsRelinker and that each project will have to take care of recreating the good version of the articles? Or is there a way that the actions of CommonsDelinker on all projects are reverted? Asavaa (talk) 09:35, 28 December 2012 (UTC)
Yes. As for the delinking, you can revert delinker on each project. Myself I an am admin on en.wikipedia, so I can do that for you. For other projects, just a normal revert would work. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 09:44, 28 December 2012 (UTC)
I think I got all of the French articles, but if I missed some, I will take care of it. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 09:49, 28 December 2012 (UTC)
I took care of the rest I think. I would have thought that a bot like CommonsDelinker would have a rewind button. Strange that it doesn't: lots of articles on various projects must have been impacted. Somebody referred le to this page and I tried to revert the various projects. Asavaa (talk) 23:44, 28 December 2012 (UTC)
I tried to get as many pages too. And yes that page is a good idea to look for revert opportunities. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 03:03, 29 December 2012 (UTC)
FYI. Asavaa (talk) 09:46, 29 December 2012 (UTC)
I saw. I know delinker waits for 10 minutes before anything is removed or put in the system for removing. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 21:03, 29 December 2012 (UTC)

PRC rank insignia deletion

  • Sir, could you explain, why did you delete almost all the pictures of the PRC's Army rank insignia even without notifying the uploader (i.e. me)? You stated that they violated copyright of "uniforminsignia" site, but I did not copy and paste the images from it, but tried to draw my own images based on this site and other sources. Also, some of the pictures were originally created by users of Chinese Wikipedia. Could you please restore the images and nominate them to a non-speedy deletion so we can at least discuss this? Elmor (talk) 06:13, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
Let's take for example File:Senior Lieutenant rank insignia (PRC, 1988-2007).jpg You uploaded the image in October of 2012 and it was taken from the Chinese Wikipedia with some adjustments. If you compare with http://www.uniforminsignia.org/index.php/en/?option=com_insigniasearch&Itemid=53&result=236 (last updated in August 2010, images there longer than that) it is the exact same image that was done. Ours is scaled down and in a jpeg form and rotated; it was a direct copy and paste. As for why you were not informed, I used a batch deletion because I found a lot of insignia copied from that site (Brazil, PR China, Azerbaijan to just name a few). Also, I have checked the Chinese Wikipedia before for image issues and a lot of images were also taken from websites such as these and were not self created. They might have, but in reality not. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 06:26, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
As for restoration, no. In my view, these were clear candidates for speedy deletion as they were identified bit-for-bit copyright violations. You are able to make the insignia on your own using SVG (since a lot of it was based on Soviet Insignia). User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 06:28, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
    • Well, AFAIR, I've made some of the pictures basing on Baidupedia images, so they are not related to uniforminsignia at all. I have a request: could you send me deleted pictures via e-mail? I don't have copies on my computer, and since the deltion was quite sudden, I did not have time to save them. 12:02, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
I can send via email. Just drop a note at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:EmailUser/Zscout370 and I will start the process. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 19:01, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
Also I did see some of the warrant officer images. I can see where you did the modifications, but still the base image came from that website (same button design, overall design of the shoulder insignia) and that is considered a derivative work. That is why those were also deleted. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 19:12, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for the letter with pictures. Are all the others just the same as ones on uniforminsignia? Elmor (talk) 06:19, 2 January 2013 (UTC)
Yes. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 18:34, 2 January 2013 (UTC)

Dardania flag

Hello Zscout370 i was wondering if you can help me how to delete previous versions of this file: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dardania_Flag.svg in the file history the ones with the thumbnail in it, cause i've made a lot of changes in the past, and can you reduce the nodes from the eagle without affecting it or just to reduce the size of the file a bit. I found a crispy version of the eagle from here http://logo.al/logos/vula-e-presidentit-te-kosoves/ so i took it and I've made a smooth version of it similar to the original one. The last thing i want from you is to rename the file from "Dardania Flag" to "Flag of Dardania". Regards, AceDouble (talk) 03:09, 2 January 2013 (UTC).

Hi

Not sure if you're aware, but it looks like Fiji's flag will soon be changing. Since you were the main admin involved in the Malawi flag situation, and I think Libya as well I thought I'd give you a heads up, as we'll probably face the same problems as before like mass uploads of the new flag, and link problems with the old one. Fry1989 eh? 00:55, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

I am aware of the flag change. Until I can get a design confirmed, I will make sure nothing happens. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 01:21, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

File:Albania state emblem.svg

Because this file is protected, if I upload a separate version, would you be willing to upload it over? My changes are just to the gold, I changed it to the same gold in the PDF linked in the source section of the infobox, and also a few nodes were mathematically off. I also edited the margins to an equal .50 in every direction, as opposed to the current 0 on three sides and 3.81 on the 4rth. Fry1989 eh? 06:16, 5 January 2013 (UTC)

Sure. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 06:17, 5 January 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, File:Albania emblem temp file.svg Fry1989 eh? 07:03, 5 January 2013 (UTC)

Template problem

I just discovered that File:Naval ensign of Libya 1977-2011.svg is still being shown on List of Navies. It's in some template but I can't find it so I can't replace it with the current File:Naval ensign of Libya.svg. Naturally this is not satisfactory, think you can fix it? Fry1989 eh? 00:51, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

The problem was in the file name, please see this edit that fixed it. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 02:15, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, usually I would have been able to myself but I couldn't find the relevant template that needed to be changed. Fry1989 eh? 02:18, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
It was also under admin lock because of the civil war from the last 2 years. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 02:56, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
Ahhh, why didn't I think of that? BTW could you maybe look at this? I'm not entirely convinced with the response. Fry1989 eh? 23:11, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

Aussie ensigns

If you're gonna use the government site as a source, it should also be applied to File:Flag of Australia.svg, rather then the current hideous colours it's set to. Fry1989 eh? 05:01, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

Problem is that the main SVG file is also from a government source when it came to the RGB colors (think of the same situation as the Swiss flag). User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 05:24, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

Dutch symbols need new lion

Hi, I made this DR, and it was accepted, but I can't edit them in Inkscape to add the new lion from File:Arms of the Netherlands (with crown).svg. When I open them, nothing in inkscape is clickable, it's like it's one big chunk. Can you give it a try? If you can't do it, I'll try a graphic lab request. Fry1989 eh? 21:26, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

Ahh I think I see the problem, the infobox says they were made in Adobe Illustrator. Is there anything you can do or should I just head to the graphic lab? Fry1989 eh? 21:34, 12 January 2013 (UTC)
I will be heading to work soon, so if I cannot tackle this tonight, I will work on it over time. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 21:36, 12 January 2013 (UTC)
I took a quick look at the image; you will have to take everything out of that symbol attribute manually and fix the orientation of the images. Then you will be able to work on the files. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 21:42, 12 January 2013 (UTC)
That went over my head, I'll go to the graphic lab. Thanks. Fry1989 eh? 21:58, 12 January 2013 (UTC)
I seem to be having that problem lately. The way the image was made was a single "symbol" tag and you cannot ungroup or do anything like that in Inkscape. You have to edit the symbol, and "promote" the code to a higher level in order to get the elements out. It is a pain in the ass, so the Lab would be better. Ireland Provincial Flags

Hi actually completely finished now thank god so wont be uploading again, i am making the flags for a local historical centre, i made most of the flags you are reverting to however the sources for these are less reliable and which were never questioned. The munster flag and connacht flag comes from information from the national museum and library. the ulster flag change is simply an attempted upgrade of the old (my design) which i made entirely to fall in line with others and finally the four provinces flag was altered to include the new images although the leinster flag. Some iv noticed will simply revert changes for the sake but If you wish to keep using my old flags for no other reason than i uploaded them first then i have no problem, i am actually simply attempting to improve the articles on my countries provinces. User:Caomahn27

The main issue I had with some of the images was just, even if the sources are not online, I just need something man so at least we can point users and reusers something. Plus, not to mention, for a lot of the changes you have done, I am having a hard time trying to figure out what you were doing. I suggest to make a test image or something, then once everything is set in stone, then we can upload. But, for the Connacht flag, I think you traced it from another website we cannot accept that as a derivative work issue. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 06:20, 14 January 2013 (UTC)

Ya apologies for the amount uploaded the software system was new to me and i definitely ran before i could walk ergo what appears to be countless careless uploads wish i could delete most of them now. The national museum and library resources are open to everyone however I should have stated them as a reference sources despite the fact i was altering the flags previously created by myself. No i actually made the connacht flag myself it was constructed from the eagle half of my last flag and then combined with a new sword arm half of an older public crest of connacht arms which more closely resembles the med- evil arms presented, my old flag contained the much more modern slightly cartoon like sword arm on one half. Like i said apologies for any disruption but i do believe that if my newer flags are used it will add to the authenticity of the articles on the provinces. other good sources http://www.internationalheraldry.com/national.htm#ireland "The journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland" http://www.archive.org/stream/journalofroyalso33royauoft/journalofroyalso33royauoft_djvu.txt, http://www.nli.ie/ http://lit-download.blogspot.ie/2008/12/medieval-ireland-encyclopedia.html, national library of ireland, http://www.heraldica.org/topics/national/ireland.htm,Heraldary in ireland online pdf (hope these few online sources suffice I believe you can see the outline of the type of red hand used two of the articles aslo the colour and type of crown used the munster arms and also the difference between the current connacht sword hand being used and the older version (User:Caomhan27 14 January 2013 (UTC)

If it is the vector art you had issues with uploading, I would be able to help on that as much as possible. It is not wrong to try out different ways with the images, but do it on a file that isn't used by anyone. I will take a look at the sources and see if I can help redo some of the flags. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 04:11, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

Yep good advice should have uploaded tryouts to unused file first and thanks for the offer of help. Would appreciate your input on the old and new updated designs and if we can get a consensus on a possible update i'll leave my older flags in place if thats whats wanted. Regards (User:Caomhan27 15 January 2013 (UTC)

I only left the older flags in place because that is the standard procedure when it comes to disputed files. I will see what can be done about the files. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 20:49, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
He's doing it again. Fry1989 eh? 03:59, 19 January 2013 (UTC)
I'm aware. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 04:11, 19 January 2013 (UTC)
I get emails when a user creates/uploads a new version of a file, so I was able to see when he was able to make the new upload. I am trying to see what the fixes could be done, and see what sources I can provide on my own, but a lot of them are not online. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 05:13, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi I changed the flag because I found an image source from 1651 from the Harriman library which is available online for all, in actuality the only flag that corresponds fully correctly is the munster flag which was surprising considering other text read. The oldest red hand of ulster or o' Neill crest is shown on the national heraldry of Ireland online PDF. Already said i shouldn't have uploaded the tryouts. I sourced the changes with the connacht flag simply being a more detailed version of the flag currently used created by myself along with the page I might add. I think the larger size of the ulster crest is appropriate on the four provinces flag to keep it in proportion with other flags the colour is too dark and not quite correct for the Burke arms. Anyway everyone especially fry bug up his ass 1889 seems to love what I've done already. Appreciate the trying your hand fix zscout370 but sources man sources ;-). (Caomhan27)

What I did with the file is I changed the hand to match that on the Northern Ireland flag and also try and fix minor issues that were in other programs. If you can link me to that PDF file, I will be able to look at it. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 17:07, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

Ya thanks its more correct than my orignal version as it should be an open hand however the newer version i created matches more closely the oldest version found of the o neill red hand and the correct colour of the de burgh arms, i would appreciate if you had a look and gave it a seal of approval. I have updated the other provinces flag pages with the information and images form for the national library of ireland Heraldry and various other Library sources referenced i have also included my proposed flag updates and reasoning behind via sources on the the talks pages, I have asked for anyone who can make a svg of uploaded 1651 images to do so as that would be the most accurate version. I think i have done all i can to insure that any proposed change is based on sound historic and sourced information.Caomhan27 (talk) 18:59, 19 January 2013 (UTC) Also I have pretty much reverted to the sizes of my old four provinces flag with the incorporation the new connacht and ulster flags and uploaded the example to the discussion pages, hopefully it will meet with everyones approval.Caomhan27 (talk) 22:06, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

You're fine for right now; it is just I need to find time and read all of these sources and see what is going on. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 02:24, 20 January 2013 (UTC)

Ok Thanks iv uploaded the new files i think they are more accurate repilcas now, Iv also uploaded the detailed (but faded) 1651 images of the provincial arms on each of their respective pages to correspond with along with further information on the historical origins aswell, hopefully everyone will be happy with them.Caomhan27 (talk) 10:57, 20 January 2013 (UTC)

File:Islam by country.svg

Dear Zscout370,

Can this svg map here be updated with the borders of the new (2011) state of South Sudan? The new country of South Sudan can then be coloured light grey like Kenya in this map which has a Muslim population of c.10-15%. (not pure white--which would be a Muslim population of 0%) Can you update this map? Just curious. Right now it shows a united Arab North Sudan and African South Sudan--but the two Sudans separated in July 2011 and South Sudan is today a member of the UN.

Its a pity that some maps on Commons are out of date...but this map is used on wikipedia (for the History of Islam on english wiki) and it looks important. I hope you can help...but its your decision and I respect this. Best Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 10:33, 22 January 2013 (UTC)

Give me about 24 hours and I can have this map updated. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 17:16, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
  • Pictogram voting comment.svg Comment: OK. Thank you very much. Kind Regards here, --Leoboudv (talk) 19:13, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
No problem. Not going to lie, this map is going to be tough. If I knew what the source map was, I would be able to fix it. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 02:31, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
  • File:Islam by country.png appears to have been a version of the source map but its in png. (although it shows South Sudan) It was made in 2005 whereas the svg map above was created in 2006. Unfortunately, someone said its better to use the svg version of the map than the more dated png version of the map (which ignores South Sudan). Otherwise they look almost similiar. Best Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 03:13, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
    • Correct, but with the way the map was coded, it is almost impossible to add a new country to it without some intensive editing and also trying to find the South Sudan map that matches that SVG file is the tricky part. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 03:15, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
  • I will just say try your best. Someone told me that SVG maps are very hard to update. If you can't update it, the best option is to create a new SVG map showing South Sudan based on File:Islam by country.png Then all wiki uses of the outdated SVG map can be changed to the new map. Just an idea. Best Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 03:20, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
    • I added South Sudan, split Sudan into the right areas. That was probably one of the hardest things to edit since a lot of it made no sense. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 05:07, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
      • The PNG file shows the states separated, but the SVG is being completely stupid right now. Can you also see if East Timor needs to be added to that map? User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 05:14, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
  • The map doesn't show East Timor. East Timor could be coloured white to show that it is a Roman Catholic majority country...if you wish but it would be a small spot on the map. Its your call. As a Catholic myself, I suppose it would help for accuracy's sake--but its your decision here. (I have no strong feelings here) If you can't update this map, the other solution is to upload a new SVG map say here: File:Islam by country 2013.svg That's assuming the new map will upload correctly as you intended with the two Sudans. Just an idea. Than I can replace the use of the old SVG map here on wikipedia if they are used on actual wiki articles. Best Regards from Metro Vancouver, Trusted user --Leoboudv (talk) 05:24, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
    • The SVG is just taking forever. I was able to make the changes I needed, but the servers are just being a pain right now. There was a request to add East Timor, but if it is not on the map in the current view, I will not add it. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 05:57, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
  • That's fine. I assume everything is slow right now because more people are likely online at night in North America. If East Timor isn't on the map, pls don't worry. South Sudan is a necessity since its a very large country whereas East Timor is nice to have--but a rather small state. I was born in West Malaysia in the early 1970s..as I said here So, I know Southeast Asia. Best Wishes from Vancouver, Canada, --Leoboudv (talk) 06:24, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
  • If you can't upload an SVG map because the servers are down, then perhaps you can try another day. But if the servers refuse to let you update a map perhaps the best solution is just to upload a brand new map here: File:Islam by country 2013.svg Unfortunately, I have to work tonight so I will be away but this is just a suggestion I thought about. I don't know if the solution is this simple sadly. Kind Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 03:29, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

Replacement question

Can you take a look at User talk:INeverCry#Undelete and Commons:Deletion requests/File:Flag of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (TEMP).svg? Thanks. INeverCry 00:59, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

Sure. I have not issued a replacement yet because I checked the website and had other Spanish speakers check the website for me. The website linked by Kovaf isn't an official website by the government, so I just reverted and said "Look, this is not official. We need something more official if we are going to change the colors." I honestly think a discussion needs to take place before the files are replaced since I had a lot of reverting going on about colors and other things with that flag. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 02:50, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

The Islam map

I was just wondering if it would be easier to upload a new map instead here:

If you can't do it, please let me know and I'll understand.

Regards, Leoboudv (talk) 03:30, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

A lot of it is just server issues; but I would like to see if I could upload this file at a new name so I can figure out what is going on. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 07:22, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
  • Oh I see. I suppose that is the problem. In the recent Mali conflict, people seem to almost upload the general map there: File:Northern Mali conflict.svg at will but I suppose its because there is an original source for the map. With the Islam map, you have to work from scratch. Its a pity this problem occured. I hope the server problem will be resolved in the next few days for the map of the Muslim world. Kind Regards from Metro Vancouver, --Leoboudv (talk) 07:36, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

Thank you note

Dear Admin Zscout370,

I apologise for not noticing earlier that this map below was now updated:

I had assumed that there was still a problem with the server and when I checked about 3 days ago the map showing Sudan was still not updated. Thank you most kindly for your help here on South Sudan. Yes, the map doesn't show East Timor but this is a really minor omission anyway...and I believe someone will update it with this other country one day. Anyway, thanks again for your kind help. It is greatly appreciated. Best Regards from Canada, --Leoboudv (talk) 01:43, 30 January 2013 (UTC)

It is no problem at all. I admit the map was very challenging, and the SVG issues are not helping either, but I am glad we tried and for the most part the map does work. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 08:35, 30 January 2013 (UTC)

Arms of Mazambique

Since you know about Vector-Images.com copyright issues with Commons, could you please just review this closed DR. I'm not satisfied that it isn't from VI. Fry1989 eh? 21:04, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

I notice the sun is different in size and pattern, but I would have to say it is almost a 95% copy from the VI site. I know he cites Zazzle as a focal point, but honestly Zazzle takes a lot of stuff from us or VI. Yet, it feels like even if I point out the derivative nature of the arms, because of a lack of an official image, people will not remove it. I would suggest to improve the image and reduce the elements that copy over, then go on from there. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 08:05, 4 February 2013 (UTC)
Also, a vector version of the arms is at http://www.portaldogoverno.gov.mz/Legisla/boletinRep/br_ano2006/br48/BR48%20-%20III%20serie%202006.pdf and it is similar to what we got and VI has, so honestly, I cannot say who had what first. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 08:13, 4 February 2013 (UTC)
Alrighty then. Thanks. Fry1989 eh? 21:48, 4 February 2013 (UTC)

BIOT arms

Can we do a merge of the two files? This is the original file with supporters, and this is the original shield-only version, but because of the file names, it looks like Rkt2312 is trying to flip them around, which is problematic because the flip would not acknowledge Demidow as the creator of the version with supporters. Fry1989 eh? 02:28, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

The problem is that Demidow didn't create that version; it was done a year or two ago by another person, but I think it was just transferred over from another project (me thinks). But I am going to replace. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 21:38, 7 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. Fry1989 eh? 01:46, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

File:Islam World.svg

Dear Zscout370,

I was just curious. Could this SVG map be updated with South Sudan as someone explicitly requested on the image file. (not me) Its unfortunately also used on another Muslim world english wiki article. There seems less use of colours in the map. South Sudan is mostly animist (African tribal religion) and Christian. If you are not able--or lack the time--please don't worry about it at all. Best Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 03:58, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

  • Thanks for your help in updated this image file. This map appeared less complicated overall, I thought but one can never be sure with an SVG map. With Kind Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 06:13, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

File:Naval Ensign of Morocco.svg

I've been able to find several photos of the ensign. The crowns differ somewhat in different ones, but I'm hoping we could use them to improve the file we have on Commons? The images are [6], [7], [8], [9]. Only the last one shows them large, but all the photos show the crowns more towards the extremities of the corners. Also the pentagram is different. When you have time, let me know how you feel. Fry1989 eh? 06:48, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

The pentagram should match that of the main flag image; I have not done that yet since I was waiting to see if there was going to be a revert war over the bloody thing. Anyways, I know the second image has a flag that is frayed a lot, so have to keep that in mind. I will see if I can find any documents to help me, but I do believe an overhaul is needed. DRs

Can you please expedite these four DRs? The files were renamed and a CommonsDelinker request put in, re-uploading them under the old name was not needed at all. [10], [11], [12], [13]. Fry1989 eh? 20:28, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

Thanks. Can you also please give voice to this AN/U. All Bidgee cares about is transferring the blame on to me, instead of looking at the facts that I was maintaining a file in the state it has been for 3 years and is government sourced. Fry1989 eh? 23:28, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
I have reconstructed the shield correctly and symmetrically, which the original was not, as File:Coat of arms of Abkhazia (temp file).svg, and put in a graphic lab request. Making you aware so if you are going to work on the arms, this is at your disposal. Fry1989 eh? 00:41, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

Help needed - plz

Hello. I just checked my Global user manager account. To my surprise I've been blocked on Indonesian Wikipedia saying "Nama pengguna tak layak" or "Username unworthy" as per Google translation. I don't edit Indonesian Wikipedia now nor may be in future because I don't know the language. But this type of erratic blocks don't give good taste and are better removed with an advice for admins so that they grow up and become broadminded for our projects. I request you to plz revoke it. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 10:55, 13 February 2013 (UTC).

Unfortunately Global Sysop was turned off at the Indonesian Wikipedia, so I cannot undo the block. But I will talk to the administrators there as soon as I can. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 20:52, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
Glad you got it resolved! User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 03:39, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

Commons:Deletion requests/File:Air Force Ensign of Singapore 1973-1990.svg, Commons:Deletion requests/File:RSAF Roundel 1973-1990.svg

As for consolidating deletion nominations, there are some cases where consolidating is optional and debatable, but if the fates of a group of files are tied together, so that if any one of the files is deleted all the other files should also be deleted, then consolidating is strongly preferred... AnonMoos (talk) 19:01, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

I do see your point, since it is from the same country, so same issues would have been decided. I have no doubt it would be public domain in the US because of how simple it is (since similar yin-yang logos were denied registration) but I do not even know what the TOO is for Singapore. Jacklee would be best able to answer that question, but I would not be surprised if it is similiar to the laws of the UK and other Commonwealth states. Fry1989 eh? 21:25, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

File:Flag of Australia (converted).svg

Can you please explain how you made the stars "more precise"? I used this construction sheet and a digital ruler to bisect each of the stars, so they were already precise. Comparing our two versions side-by-side at the same resolution, you moved 3 stars up a bit, but the other two were left alone. And there is a problem with your code reduction which I keep having to change, you removed the blue section under the Union Jack. I made it very clear in my edit summary that I added a blue section behind the Union Jack. Removing it makes it impossible to mirror the flag on the red and white ensign files. There needs to be a blue section for the Union Jack separate from the over-all blue so that any changes made to the flag can be mirrored on to the red and white ensign. Fry1989 eh? 20:05, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

The whole point of having a blue section under the Union Jack is so that with just one click, any user can take a blue ensign and make it a red one. Without the blue section under the Union Jack as an independent element, and relying on the overall blue of the ensign to cover it, this is what happens when anybody tries to do that. I just fixed this problem on all the British Overseas Territories and the Australian flag, and you messed it up again. It's especially important for Australia and New Zealand which each have 3 different ensigns, so that any change made to the national flag can instantly be applied to the red and white ensigns in one or two short clicks. If the code has to be a little bigger, then it's a sacrifice that should be made. Fry1989 eh? 20:40, 24 February 2013 (UTC)
The problem I had was the stars measured for size and from what I found on your version and the main Aussie flag file, the star was too big. So I made a circle of 3/5s of the Union Jack's width (for the Commonwealth Star), fit the star in that circle, then copied that star across the similar spots as a cloned file. I used the measurements provided by the Australian Government and used the basic size that was from the main AU flag image (since all values will provide whole numbers after division). As for the code; my goal was to reduce the filesize since a lot of these files will have very high usage. For the Aussie flag image, I saw it as redundant for having a blue union path, if the entire flag is a blue. I did add the blue section for the Civil and Naval Ensigns. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 04:21, 25 February 2013 (UTC)
Well it's great that we have an official construction sheet, the thing about the stars was more of a query. However, the blue thing I still think is important, especially for countries like Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, where a change to the national flag needs to be instantly mirrored onto any ensigns. It just makes the process as easy as possible. Fry1989 eh? 20:31, 25 February 2013 (UTC)
I usually edit all of the flags at once, so that isn't a issue 90% of the time. But for the past 2 days, it has been nuts at work and the Commons was mucking up on my end. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 08:40, 26 February 2013 (UTC)

Can you further update the map File:Islam by country.svg and its alternative map File:Islam by country 01.svg (which does not show Kosovo)?

Hi

Can you update the maps File:Islam by country.svg by coloring the various countries according to the percentages of the local Muslim populations? Serbia, Azerbaijan and Sudan need to be corrected/updated. Can you also include East Timor (which is still shown as part of Indonesia)?

  • Serbia: Muslim 3.2% (because Kosovo is excluded in the survey, and already shown separately in the map) CIA World Factbook - Serbia Use the lightest green (Sunni) color bar range indicating the percentages between 0% and 5% (almost all Muslims in Serbia are Sunni).
  • Sudan: Muslim 97.2% (excluding South Sudan, which is already shown separately in the map) Use the darkest green (Sunni) color bar range indicating the percentages between 95% and100% (almost all Muslims in Sudan are Sunni).
  • East Timor: Muslim 1% East Timor Use the lightest green (Sunni) color bar range indicating the percentages between 0% and 5% (almost all Muslims in East Timor are Sunni).

Thank you

Can you also update the alternative map File:Islam by country 01.svg that is based on the aforementioned map Islam by country.svg, by doing the same changes but without touching Serbia (which includes Kosovo as part of Serbia), when taking United Nations recognition as a basis?

When you have spare time, would you be able to do the text for the presidential flag, and the shapes for the seal? I don't have a clue what I'm doing when it comes to text, and the shape for the seal I'd be no good at either, but I think they're relatively simple for people who know what they're doing. Hi Zscout370

I had been looking at Namkhanh02's contributions and noticed that they are blocked as vandalism only, but I can't see the vandalism, may I ask where it is, or what problems the user is causing ? Penyulap 05:59, 11 April 2013 (UTC)

He was uploading a lot of badly coded SVG files to override versions, he was told not too before, but he still kept on going. I also found several copyright violations from that account. Most of his contributions were deleted. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 08:08, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the response and that makes sense. I do always wonder about indef blocks though, as they can simply sock and that makes it harder to track. A month, or six at the most, means you have an easy time to identify the user and to know what to look for. With a sock you get none of that.
Of course there are people who think that CU works, and they are outnumbered by those who use other IP's. Sometimes I think that dealing with the problems at an early stage makes all that moot, just explaining to the user the basics and bringing them back into productive contribution seems so easy. But I'll not bother you with that, I think I am in a minority. Penyulap 08:22, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
Honestly, the only sock hunting I go do is right behind my bed and find about 4 pairs in 6 minutes. With this user, people came to me and said this was a sock, something needs to be done. I just kicked it over to checkuser and them use their pixie dust to figure it out. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 08:32, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
As for this user, I believe it is a language issue too. I believe he speaks Vietnamese and most of his edits are from vn.wikipedia. We tried to get a user to speak his language but that failed. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 08:34, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
That is all so sad that I wish I hadn't asked or even noticed. I need to build an alternate website, I really do. Myself, I am superb at sock-hunting, that's with no doubt my downfall on en.wiki, the self-elected arbs are paranoid that I care about their hi-jinx. Unfortunately, many editors, like ThatPeskyCommoner left after my block, when they could see what is going on over there. I don't even care at all, playing cops and robbers is great for 5 year olds, but I grew out of it when I was a child, but some people never do. Eventually the people who play those games with intellectuals get the project itself blocked with D.D.O.S. tools, which harms everyone. Anyhow, I leave it, I don't even want to think about it, needless to say I feel blocking people because we can't or don't want to speak their language is bad in too many ways to count. Thanks for your reply. Penyulap 08:49, 11 April 2013 (UTC)

Belarusian toponyms

Hi Zscout,

There is currently a discussion going on at VP. It seems clear that we should follow en.wiki in using BGN/PCGN to transliterate Belarusian place names, but there is some difficulty thrashing out the details. See Commons:Village pump#Guideline for transliteration?.

Because of your involvement with Wikiproject Belarus on en, I was wondering if you have any insight on this. Maybe your involvement is in a purely vexillological capacity :)

Thanks, –moogsi (blah) 16:18, 17 April 2013 (UTC)

I have no connection with the state and/or language in any way, so my comments would be useless. I am mostly focused on Belarus in, your words, a purely vexillological capacity. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 16:30, 17 April 2013 (UTC)

I also notice the proportions are quite...odd. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 00:19, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
More photos: [16], this one's strange since the big one has it but the little ones in the stands don't appear to, here's an older one. Yes the proportions for the canton are peculiar but they don't look random to me, however as we can see when the national flag is elongated the ensign is along with it, so it's safe to say the overall proportion is the same as the national flag. Fry1989 eh? 00:26, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
I think the key date to watch out for is March 21st of this year. That is when it seems the new flag made its first official appearance, and more photos came out around March 23rd. It was updated around the same time Evo Morales tried to push Chile to give Bolivia back access to the sea. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 00:31, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
Well Bolivia's been trying for a hundred years and more. They really have bigger issues to worry about than access to the sea if you ask me. In any case, the way the canton seems to be designed is that the stars divide the flag in half horizontally, like the UJ does in a British canton, if that makes sense. Fry1989 eh? 00:53, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
It does make a lot of sense. I kicked this over to NAVA to see if our Spanish speakers have any clue on any adoption dates or technical specifications. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 02:21, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, I hope they can come up with some insight. Fry1989 eh? 18:18, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

New Jersey state flag

Hi, I reverted your change to the New Jersey state flag. While the federal government may consider that Pantone color to be "buff", that is not actually the shade used for the NEw Jersey state flag, as it is far too dark. As seen in the photograph here, from the state's official website, the color was correct s it was. Oknazevad (talk) 16:51, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

What I did was I followed the Cable Color code (Cable No. 65015, U.S. Army Buff. The Color Association of the United States, Inc.). It is going to be the same color as http://www.tioh.hqda.pentagon.mil/images/branch/QM_Br_Plaque.jpg since that buff color, as defined by NJ Code, is only the symbols of the US Army Quartermaster. Linguistic flags

Hello Zach. I need your help regarding one problem with the user:Shikku27316. He is reverting my edits on the page which are according to the common acceptable scientific classification of the Indo-European languages. His claims are based on his personal opinion, not accepted in the academic sources. In other words, he is placing Greek and Albanian in the group of en:Paleo-Balkan languages, but everywhere Greek and Albanian form branches on their own. This is his version, this is my version. If you take a look on every page on Wikipedia (and all books as a matter of fact) these two languages form their own branches in the IE tree family. Having no facts and sources to support his thesis, he personally attacked me on ethnic bases, calling me 'VardarianBoy' (highly offensive for the Macedonians used by the Greeks). I assume he's Greek and that's his way of discussing. Should I report to the Administrators' notice board? Best--Никола Стоіаноски 18:44, 21 May 2013 (UTC)

I apologize for getting to this late, but yes, I would take it to the administrator board not only for the comments he made, but also to resolve the situation. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 19:18, 23 May 2013 (UTC)

Can you delete the redirect? When I uploaded it I forgot "old". That way if anyone uploads the current design then won't have a problem. Fry1989 eh? 17:29, 27 May 2013 (UTC)

I also need the redirect on File:Ireland road sign RUS 026 (Gaeilge).svg to be deleted too please, I screwed up the name on it as well. Fry1989 eh? 21:21, 30 May 2013 (UTC)

Some minor problems

Hello Zscout. I have been trying to keep the NPOV of three files from ruining it. Two different accounts (User:Ο Μέγας Αλέξανδρος and User:MacedonianMk, which may be the single man) revert me. FYROM is an offensive name and it is not used even on Wikipedia and the common name of the country in English is Republic of Macedonia. The user(s) revert me to FYROM versions. Check these: 1, 2 and 3. I would write to the user if he used one account, but there are two accounts and three images and I am not sure where to post my explanation (to both of them?). Can you take a look at this minor issue?--Никола Стоіаноски 11:23, 29 August 2013 (UTC)

Because of the constant color changes in the past, and how I am not very active like I used to be, I would prefer if this could be posted on the talk page of the SVG file. Once a consensus is reached, I can make the changes needed. But if it is the Pantone colors listed on that page, I use http://www.pantone.com/pages/pantone/colorfinder.aspx for all Pantone flags on the Commons. So you're just gonna revert to an unsourced colour and leave it like that, even though we know it was darker and the green I chose has been the status quo for 2 years without disagreement from anyone? That's how you solve disagreements now? Just how long do you think a edit should stand to be considered "established"? 5 years? 10? Fry1989 eh? 20:57, 16 November 2013 (UTC)
Just look at the talk page and I am trying to find a balance. But when flags are indeed split from files, all versions must have been included and that was not done. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 21:03, 16 November 2013 (UTC)
And plus, even though I have been away from the Commons more than I like to, I still see your name brought up to AN over these disputes and it needs to be solved and solved quickly. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 21:14, 16 November 2013 (UTC)
Oh, you mean when I was punished after the fact with a block even though that violates the blocking policy? Cause I have that one well documented. Or the one I started because I was being repeatedly personally attacked and your colleagues completely turned a blind eye and did nothing, not even a warning on the attacker's talk page to cease the attacks. Instead of looking at the frequency, look at the substance and then you can tell me I show up there too often. I've trusted several admins including yourself for a long time to be cool-headed and able to deal with things appropriately, but my two most recent experiences of prejudice simply because my name "shows up often" or because I "cause a lot of drama" is causing my trust to wane. Fry1989 eh? 00:24, 17 November 2013 (UTC)
I am not on the Commons often as I would like to be, but when I came by today and saw that you were just dragged to ANI for just one revert, I stepped in to make sure what happened at, lets say, some of the Brazilian images does not happen again. And, from just knowing how some other users have treated you or just ignored by other admins, it would have just been ongoing until I was emailed or something happened that resulted in a long term block. With this specific issue, while 2 years is supposed to be hopefully the consensus, but as we both know, anything that involves you and colors will be dragged to ANI and no matter if we are both right, it still will be a major issue. Invitation to Discussion about File:Republic of China National Emblem.svg

This file is protected because of the argument about color of the blue shade. According to an admin's reply, we have to discuss and reach an agreement for the color. I believe that the colors of a national emblem should be identical to a national flag, and I know you participated in discussion and decision about the colors of the flag of the Republic of China. Therefore, wish you can provide your suggestion here. Thanks. --Akira123 (talk) 16:52, 31 January 2014 (UTC)

What the hell are you doing?! The file was protected for a reason, that blue was sourced and there is no consensus to change it! Fry1989 eh? 19:56, 21 March 2014 (UTC)
There was an issue of the two different blues and used the same flag blue color from 2009. If the consensus changes, then the colors can change. Until then, we need to have some sort of matching. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 20:14, 21 March 2014 (UTC)
It was changed because of a source, and that shade of blue was accepted for a very long time. It would make more sense to change the flag to match the sourced blue of the emblem, rather than change the emblem to match the unsourced blue of the flag. Fry1989 eh? 20:17, 21 March 2014 (UTC)
So I guess you don't care about sources then. Fry1989 eh? 17:46, 29 March 2014 (UTC)

File:Hammer and Sickle of the Workers' Party of Korea.png looks terrible, could you fix it and make it look like the File:Danghui.svg (that is, fixing the background). If so, thanks. --Trust Is All You Need (talk) 16:19, 14 March 2014 (UTC)

ArchiveBot

Hi, I noticed you have set up User:MiszaBot to archive your talk page. Unfortunately, the bot has stopped working, and given how its operator is inactive, it is unclear when/if this will fixed. For the time being, I have volunteered to operate a MiszaBot clone (running the exact same code). With that said, your input would be appreciated at Commons:Bots/Requests/ArchiveBot 1. Regarding Flag_of_Lesotho.svg

Hello. I noticed that you created an SVG for Flag of Lesotho. I am involved in a project to put together a repository of flags for all standard registered geographical regions (according to IETF language tag and IANA Subtag Registry). Our main criteria for this repository is that all the flags are available as Public Domain. So far we managed to collect information for 240 out of 246 needed flag which are all available as Public Domain on Wikipedias or Commons. Few examples:

Your file, Flag of Lesotho, is among those 6 which are not release under Public Domain and I'm contacting you to see if it would be possible to re-license this image under PD. Obviously, if you agree to do this, we will make sure that a link-back to Commons page for the image as well as authors' attribution are embedded in the file's metadata fields. We will also provide all the authors of those images collected with a link to the public repository where last version of images are stored. I'd appreciate it if you let me know about the possibility of this. Thank you very much in advance. --Shervinafshar (talk) 00:21, 10 July 2014 (UTC)

Zscout370 has been away for some time, so they may not be able to answer this in a quick fashion. However, all flags on Commons must be in the Public Domain to be hosted here, so the flag in question is considered PD. Fry1989 eh? 00:30, 10 July 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the tip. The problem is that currently this image is marked as CC-BY-SA-2.5 on Commons and I believe the changing of the license declaration is something that one of the authors can do. --Shervinafshar (talk) 14:45, 10 July 2014 (UTC)
