Hello, ZxxZxxZ!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Added category[edit]

Hello. I see you added "Category:Politicians" to File:Saddam rumsfeld.jpg. I wonder why. I see the image already has categories for "Donald Rumsfeld" and for "Saddam Hussein". Is the category for one of the other men seen in the background? If so, do you know their name? If not, why do you think this category should be added here? Thank you for your time. -- Infrogmation (talk) 11:59, 10 October 2011 (UTC)

Hello. Yes, the person on the right is Tariq Aziz. In this video, he appeares in the first milliseconds (the one who raises his hand) as well as seconds 40–45, and, since Saddam shaked hands with that American person next to Rumsfeld (see the video), I thought he may be a politician. — Z 15:20, 10 October 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. I see we didn't have a category for Tariq Aziz, so I've started one. Cheers, Infrogmation (talk) 16:02, 10 October 2011 (UTC)

Quranic Manuscript Writtern by Ali (as)[edit]

Hi, do you know whether there is any picture of the Qur'anic manuscripts that are thought to be written by Imam Ali (as) in com.wiki? Regards, Taha (talk) 04:30, 12 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi Taha, as far as I know there are two manuscripts believed to be the Mushaf, one is in the Library of Imam Ali Shrine in Najaf and another one is in Astan Qods Razavi museum,[1] we can't upload the latter because of its permission (unless we take a picture ourselves), but I found two image of that of Imam Ali Shrine's Library and uploaded them here and here (Btw we can crop the image and remove those writings later) --Z 13:14, 12 July 2012 (UTC)
Perfect. Thanks. I'll crop and use them. One more question: After croping, should I upload in Commons or Fa.Wiki? Taha (talk) 15:19, 12 July 2012 (UTC)
No problem, in Commons (click on "Upload a new version of this file" at the end of file's page) --Z 15:31, 12 July 2012 (UTC)
Done. Sorry, one last question: Regarding the captions for the pictures: do you have a reliable source saying the manuscripts date back to 1st century AH? Because Mahmoud Ramyar says many of the manuscripts known as Mushaf Ali can't be authentic. Taha (talk) 15:39, 12 July 2012 (UTC)
Unfortunately not (I just wrote that based on the information here) --Z 16:32, 12 July 2012 (UTC)
No Problem. Thanks.
BTW, there are a couple of other manuscripts (incorrectly) thought to be written by Imam Ali, like the one in Egypt. You can find a list of them in Ramyar's book. Taha (talk) 22:16, 12 July 2012 (UTC)

File:Iran ethnoreligious distribution 2004.jpg[edit]

Hi! Would it be alright if you added a Persian language description to this file? Also would it be alright if you provided the Persian equivalents of the English, so I can make a request for somebody to make a Persian version of File:Iran ethnoreligious distribution 2004.jpg? Thanks WhisperToMe (talk) 10:47, 18 October 2012 (UTC)

Thank you so much! WhisperToMe (talk) 16:06, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Category:Arabic architecture in Indonesia[edit]

Hello, I wonder why you have redirected this category. There has been a trend in Indonesia since the 1980s to impose Arabic architecture on new mosques. You can see that there is a vernacular Islamic architecture with indigenous features. Today only mosques built by the government retain the traditional three-roofed Indonesian style. Not all Muslim in Indonesia, especially the educated ones, are happy about this "arabisation" of Islam in Indonesia. This sensitivity has to be taken into account. This is why I created the category. By removing it, you are only vindicating those Muslim in Indonesia who want to "arabise" Islam in the country, Humboldt (talk) 20:41, 21 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi, you're right, forgive me for the mistake. --Z 20:48, 21 November 2012 (UTC)

Well, I suppose that being Iranian, you understand the issue... :-) Humboldt (talk) 20:51, 21 November 2012 (UTC)

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
