English: Acoustic jars are ceramic vessels found set into the walls, and sometimes into the sides of cavities beneath the floors, of medieval churches. They are believed to have been intended to improve the sound of singing.
Deutsch: Schallgefäße nennt die in einem antiken Theater mit gestuften Sitzreihen unter den Sitzen aufgestellten Gefäße aus Bronze oder Ton verschiedener Größe und Form. Auch in vielen mittelalterlichen Kirchen in ganz Europa findet man in die Wände des Chores oder des Langhauses eingemauerte Schallgefäße mit der Öffnung zum Kirchenraum. Dort ist die Wirkung der Gefäße eine andere, da die Kirchen Räume mit relativ großer Nachhallzeit sind. Die Gefäße wirken in diesen Räumen nachhallzeitverkürzend.
