· English: Acropolis (Gr. akros, top, polis, city), literally the upper part of a town. The most famous example of the kind is the Acropolis of Athens, which, by reason of its historical associations and the famous buildings erected upon it, is generally known without qualification as simply “The Acropolis”.
Français : Le terme acropole signifie « ville haute » et désigne la citadelle d'une cité grecque, où étaient généralement situés les bâtiments emblématiques de la cité, comme les temples ou les lieux de réunion importantes. Il désigne plus particulièrement l'acropole d'Athènes, en raison de l'importance historique de cette dernière.
