- Born in the German West Prussia town of Dirschau (Tczew), in the present day Polish Pomeranian Voivodeship.
- Because of oppression in Nazi Germany as a Jewish artist, he emigrated to the United States in 1935.
- A United States National Medal of Arts recipient.
