English: The belfry (Thai: Ho Rakhang) is situated to the south of the ubosot and was built by King Rama I at the same time as the ubosot in order to house a large bell. A belfry is used to sound the time for ceremonies, prayers, etc. … Although the Emerald Buddha Temple is not residential and therefore the belfry has probably not been much used, its presence is neccessary in order to fulfil the requirements of Buddhist architecture.
The current belfry was rebuilt by King Rama IV on the original site and only completed in the Fifth Reign.
