Bimetallic coins are coins which have two planchlets bonded together. The term "bimetallic" is somewhat misleading because most coins are made from alloys of two or more metals, but bimetallic coins have two distinct parts the outer part, know as the "ring" and the inner part, known as the "plug". The two metals/alloys are chosen two provide high color contrast. One common combination being a ring made from Cupro-nickel with a silvery appearance and a plug made from aluminum bronze with a distinct golden color. Other common configurations for both rings and plugs include stainless steel, bronze, brass and stainless steel coated with bronze or brass
