Hook Norton brewery, a traditional steam-powered tower brewery

Steam engines used to power breweries. Owing to the availability of steam, also used in the brewing process, steam power was conveniently available. These engines led to the development of the 'steam brewery' or 'tower brewery', arranged vertically so that water was first lifted by steam power, then could flow downwards through the brewing process by gravity.
