A buggy is a single-seated four-wheel vehicle with or without a top, with the two pairs of wheels being scarcely the same size. (Stoddart's Encyclopaedia Americana, 1883). It is a peculiarly North American carriage. (The universal cyclopaedia, 1900)

Note: In England it was once used to designate light two-wheeled open carriages as well. The name originated in India, where it was used to designate "a kind of gig with a hood to screen the traveler from the rays of the sun".
