English: Ruins of St. Paul's, a church erected between 1594 and 1602 by priests of the Company of Jesus. It was consecrated to ‘Nossa Senhora da Madre de Deos’, like its predecessor, built ca. 1565. It was destroyed by a violent fire during the night of 26 to 27 January 1835. In 1838 the side walls were deemed unsafe and were removed, but the symbol-saturated façade with its liturgical and iconographical elements was left standing.
