When Fidel Castro took power in Cuba there were several thousand Cubans who commuted to the US base to perform non-military tasks. The USA stopped hiring new workers, but existing workers were allowed to keep their jobs.
- The last two elderly commuters retired in 2012.
- Several hundred sought asylum on the base, known as "special category residents", and a few dozen elderly men and women continue to live there today.
- Cubans continue to seek asylum on the base -- largely without success.
