Dagon was a god worshiped in Syrian cities such as Tuttul, Terqa and Mari, also known from Mesopotamia and Ugarit. According to the Bible he was the head god of the Philistines, and an erroneous tradition rooted in biblical exegesis lead to the misconception that he was a fish god.
