English: David Engels is a Belgian ancient historian, professor of the Free University Brussels (ULB). From 1997 to 2002, he studied History, Philosophy and Economics at the University of Aachen (RWTH) and completed his PhD. in 2005 thanks to the German Academic Scholarship Foundation. From 2009 to 2017 he also worked, first as editor, finally as director, for the academic publishing house Latomus. Engels is mostly known for his 2013 monograph “The Decline – The crisis of the European Union and the fall of the Roman Republic”, where he outlined parallels between the Late Roman Republic of the 1st century BC and the current crisis of the Western societies. The book has stirred a major public debate on the future of Europe. Aside from his scholarly work, Engels regularly contributes to debates on contemporary political and social issues and regularly writes for journals such as "Le Point", "Le Vif-L’Express", "Cicero" and "Cato".
Magyar: David Engels belga ókorkutató történész, a Brüsszeli Szabadegyetem professzora. 1997 és 2002 között az Aacheni Egyetemen tanult történelem, filozófia és közgazdaságtan szakon, majd 2005-ben a Német Egyetemi Ösztöndíj Alapítványnak köszönhetően doktori fokozatot szerzett. 2009-től 2017-ig eleinte szerkesztőként, majd igazgatóként is a Latomus tudományos kiadónál dolgozott. Magyarul 2017-ben jelent meg A birodalommá válás útján – Az Európai Unió válsága és a Római Köztársaság hanyatlása című könyve, amelyben összeveti az ókori Róma hanyatló korszakát napjaink Európájával. A könyv Európa jövője kapcsán heves vitát gerjesztett a közvéleményben. Tudományos munkássága mellett Engels rendszeres résztvevője a jelenkori politikai és társadalmi problémákról rendezett vitáknak és gyakran publikál olyan folyóiratokban, mint például a „Le Point”, a „Le Vif-L’Express”, a „Cicero” és a „Cato”.
