New York is one of those states that possesses a unique design to its state route trailblazers/shields.

  • Not only is the design used in its MUTCD-standard black-on-white state route signs, but a number of its parkways also employs the uniquely-shaped shield, although in their case they use a white-on-green motif to distinguish themselves.
  • Parkways on Long Island use a different sign design—a black-on-white one featuring a silhouette of the Montauk Lighthouse.
  • Still other road signs—due to their history or purpose—employ completely unique designs.
