Deutsch: Als Hängeboden oder Zwischendecke wird eine zweite Decke die unterhalb der eigentlichen Decke[1] eingezogen ist. Hängeböden wurden mit der Intention erfunden, die Akustik im Raum zu verbessern. Durch den Zwischenraum werden die Geräusche von und zum Nachbarraum gedämmt.

English: A dropped ceiling is a secondary ceiling, hung below the main (structural) ceiling. They may also be referred to as a drop ceiling, false ceiling, or suspended ceiling, and are a staple of modern construction and architecture. The area above the dropped ceiling is called the plenum space, as it is sometimes used for HVAC air return. The plenum space is also very commonly used to conceal piping, wiring, and/or ductwork.

Nederlands: Een systeemplafond is een plafondvorm waarbij men door middel van plafondplaten en plafondprofielen een vrij toegangelijk plenum (de ruimte tussen dak of bovenliggende vloer en verlaagd systeemplafond en waarvan vaak handig gebruikt wordt gemaakt voor de aanleg van de verschillende systeemleidingen zoals b.v. electriciteit en verwarming/ventilatie) creëert. Vooral in de utiliteitsbouw wordt dit veel toegepast.
