English: El Panecillo was built in 1975 by Spanish sculptor Agustín de la Herrán Matorras, stands as Ecuador’s tallest monument. This 41-meter aluminum figure, inspired by Bernardo de Legarda’s 1734 Virgin, invites visitors inside with a narrow staircase winds through its hollow core to a platform at her feet. Some of the best panoramic views of the Historic Center of Quito. El Panecillo, Quito is a hill located in the middle west of the city at an altitude of about 3,016 metres (9,895 ft) above mean sea level is a monument to the Virgin Mary is located on top of El Panecillo and is visible from most of the Historic Center of Quito, the best-preserved, least altered historic center in Latin America. The renowned Spanish sculptor, celebrated for monumental works like the 1976 Virgin of Quito, passed away on November 18, 2015, in Bilbao, Spain, at the age of 83. The Historic Center of Quito (Centro Histórico de Quito) was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1978 as the first city (along with Kraków, Poland) to receive this designation. El Centro Histórico de Quito, Ecuador was constructed on what was once a 16th century Inca city at 2,850 meters above sea level in the Andes Mountains near the Equator and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that stretches over 790 acres and contains 130 monumental buildings, 8,000 smaller properties. The Colonial Center of Quito has numerous 425 year old Churches and Convents.
