The Eleutherian Mills were the first gunpowder mills erected on the Brandywine Creek by the DuPont family. The mills and the owner's mansion are now part of the Hagley Museum and Library. The Eleutherian Mills historic district was placed on the National Register of Historic Places and made a National Historic Landmark in 1966. It overlaps significantly with the later Brandywine Powder Mills District, which encompasses all of the Hagley Museum north of the Tyler-McConnell Bridge, and also includes Walker's Mill, part of the NRHP-listed Walker's Mill and Walker's Bank, and parts of the Henry Clay Village Historic District.
