The Greco-Roman concept of Ethiopia, Aethiopia, Aithiopia, etc. as Black Africa below Egypt and Nubia, including most or all of sub-Saharan Africa and revived in the early modern period to cover areas as far west as Nigeria and as far south as South Africa. In some eras and to some cartographers, the region of Ethiopia specifically excluded Ethiopia proper when it was known separately as Abyssinia.
